Milanof-Schock Library recorded more than 600 attendees to the programs offered during the week of June 18. During the week, a team member of the Shuts Environmental Center in Lancaster taught program participants how bats and whales produce sound waves, and children created musical instruments out of simple materials to create sound waves of their own. Marcy Klutchka brought in Chicken Patti and Ziggy Zebra for a Giggle Magic Puppet Show. For her art class, Miss Jan had students paint messages and pictures on river rocks to spread the word of kindness at home or in the community. Small rockets have been built in STEM Club and were launched behind the library. A local alpaca farm brought two of its alpacas to visit and shared information about the history of alpacas and what it takes to care for the animals. The week ended with an afternoon

celebrating community makers, who demonstrated their creativity in a variety of ways, from 3-D printing to needle felting. Mount Joy Mayor Tim Bradley was the mystery guest for Miss Jan’s first Lunch Bunch program of the summer. In addition to the programs, library staff members have handed out more than 1,200 reading forms to people in all age groups for this year’s national Summer Reading Program, “Libraries Rock! There is still time for interested participants to pick up a packet and read for prizes. For more information, readers may visit www.mslibrary.org. water and explore. Snacks and beverages will be provided. The creek stomp will be led by Matt Kofroth, a watershed specialist with the Lancaster County Conservation District who has been leading this event and others throughout the county for several years. CCWA president Steve Gergely explained that participants enter the creek and collect macroinvertebrates before sharing their findings and listening to Kofroth explain how the species that are found in the water directly relate to the health of the creek. “It’s a great hands-on event,” Gergely said. “I think most participants are surprised at how much life is within our local waterways. We’ve been hosting this event for a few years now and it’s always exciting and gratifying to see folks of all ages discovering what’s in our waterways and how the macroinvertebrates are a direct indicator of how healthy, or unhealthy, our local waterways are.” The time will also include discussion on the ways that everyone can help to keep pollution out of local streams and rivers. Participants are also welcome to tour the Logan Park streambank restoration project just across the street from Mummau Park, which Gergely said was implemented a few years ago to help control smaller flood events and to improve water quality. CCWA members will be available to answer questions and provide information about the organization’s other ongoing efforts to promote good stewardship of the land within the Chiques Watershed. CCWA meets on the first Wednesday of each month at 7 p.m. at the Rapho Township building, 971 N. Colebrook Road, Manheim. New members and interested individuals are always welcome to attend. Price noted that eco-friendly, biodegradable powder will be used for the color materials that will douse participants. Volunteers, including local student cheerleaders, will be on hand to provide plenty of crowd support for participants. To register in advance, interested individuals may visit www.has5k.com. Separate prices have been set for adults and for children age 13 and under. The deadline to be guaranteed a race T-shirt is Monday, July 30, but folks may continue to register after that date and on the day of the event. Event-day registration and check-in will be open from 9 to 9:45 a.m. Participants will also receive breakfast during that time. Several local food trucks will have items available to purchase during and after the race, including savory and sweet stuffed waffles, ribs, wings, ice cream, milkshakes, and more. A local disc jockey will be spinning tunes as well. Yard games will be set up to enjoy, and children may also play on the park’s playground. “It’s a family-type event,” said Bixler, noting that folks who may not be interested in running or walking in the 5K are still more than welcome to attend the event and support Hands Across the Street. “It’s definitely community-driven. We’re just trying to educate people in the local area and across all of Lancaster County about what Hands Across the Street does,” Price said. According to www.columbiahas.org, 87 percent of students residing in Columbia Borough qualify for free or reduced lunches at school. During the summer months, Hands Across the Street steps in to meet that need. Hands Across the Street’s Summer Food Service Program offers free meals to youths under age 18 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Mondays through Fridays through Aug. 17 at eight locations in Columbia and Wrightsville. A full list of those locations is available at www.columbiahas.org/projects. In 2017, the Summer Food Service Program served more than 8,000 meals to local children. For more details on the Color My Dreams 5K, readers may visit www.has5k.com or call Price at 813-215-7801 or Bixler at 717-6152934. Before joining Ruhl Insurance in 1988, Nevin and his wife, Doneen, operated a dairy farm in Manheim. Under Nevin’s leadership and production efforts, the agency further expanded its geographical footprint and client base outside of the Lancaster County area and diversified its product offerings to reach new markets and economic sectors. “A lot has changed,” Nevin said, “but one thing that will always remain the same is our commitment to Jake’s philosophy that our ethical responsibility to our clients, (our) employees, and our companies must always exceed our legal obligations. It was the right way to do business then, and it is the right way to conduct business now.” Nevin noted that Ruhl Insurance continues to grow and foster relationships with both regional insurance companies and national carriers in order to provide comprehensive insurance solutions for local communities and their residents. “The insurance marketplace is extremely competitive in this area,” Nevin remarked. “The way we have to differentiate ourselves is by living up to our slogan of being ‘A Hometown Agency With National Resources.’” Nevin stated that Ruhl Insurance strives to stay on the front lines of technology and new product offerings while

This year marks 75 years in business for Ruhl Insurance, a four-generation, locally owned and operated independent insurance agency. Started in 1943 by Jacob “Jake” H. Ruhl, Ruhl Insurance originally offered insurance, real estate, tax preparation, and notary services. Jake strongly believed that ethical responsibility exceeds legal obligation and conducted his business practices accordingly. Upon Jake’s involvement in the founding of the Manheim Auto Auction, the insurance agency was transitioned to Donald E. Ruhl in 1959. During this time, numerous relationships with both local and national insurance providers were created and solidified as Ruhl Insurance further established itself as one of the leading insurance agencies in Lancaster County. The subsequent two decades of agency growth required a move from the office located on South Main Street in Manheim to the current location on Market Square in Manheim. In 1983, the George H. Danner building, a turn-of-the-century mercantile store and local landmark, was renovated and furnished in such a way to preserve as much of the structure’s history as possible. Donald’s wife, Janice, was instrumental in spearheading these efforts, and she still owns the building today. The agency is currently owned by and

This year’s Sommer Singspiel, a day camp hosted by the Lancaster Liederkranz, will take students entering grades three through 12 on a virtual journey through Germany, Austria, and Switzerland. The camp will run from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 6, through Thursday, Aug. 9. “The students will learn vocabulary about the different modes of transportation available in Europe as well as packing items and famous destinations,” said Lisa Sempsey, who is one of four certified educators who will teach various aspects of German music and dances during the camp. “The music will be a wonderful mix of traditional pieces as well as students experiencing and creating music to accompany their ‘journey’ across the German-speaking parts of Europe. Additionally, the campers will get the opportunity to create and play instruments from some nontraditional materials,” she explained. “It’s going to be a blast!”

in its fourth year. The camp is an outgrowth of the Cultural Grant and Scholarship Fund of the Liederkranz, which aims to provide opportunities for students to experience German language and culture. In addition to music, the camp will focus on experiences with German language, authentic food, cultural traditions, and soccer and other outdoor games. A sharing showcase on the final afternoon will give students a venue in which to share their experiences with their friends and families. “It is going to be very much a learnby-doing camp, and while it will be very valuable and meaningful, it will be taught in a fun, kid-friendly way,” said founding director Drue Bullington. “(Sommer Singspiel) engages the younger family members and promotes in them a love of community music-making (and) a sense of cultural heritage and gives exposure to singing, playing, and moving - all things kids love to do naturally - in tandem with developmentally appropriate German language learning interspersed with experiences that stem

spective, quoting the individual as saying, “I love that German language, music, and culture is experienced rather than taught. For instance, rather than just telling the kids the word for ‘apple strudel’’ and that it is a popular German dish and maybe giving them a taste of strudel, they involve the children in making strudel.” The Lancaster Liederkranz, 722 S. Chiques Road, Manheim, was founded in 1880 as a singing society by German immigrants in Lancaster city. It continues today as a dynamic family organization dedicated to perpetuating and amplifying the founders’ original purpose through song, dance, language, art, education, and international cultural exchange. The Sommer Singspiel camp will be held at the Liederkranz. There is a cost per student to attend, with discounts for Liederkranz members and for multiple family members.
