Chamber will hold chicken barbecue
BY CATHY MOLITORIS“We have the best chicken barbecue around,” said Mount Joy Chamber of Commerce executive director Ashley Zell, describing the Chamber’s fundraiser. “How can you go wrong when it includes a whoopie pie?”
The Chamber will hold its chicken barbecue on Saturday, Aug. 19, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the back parking lot of Milanof-Schock Library, 1184 Anderson Ferry Road, Mount Joy. Prepurchased meals must be picked up by 1 p.m.
The meal will include a halfchicken, a baked potato, applesauce, a roll, butter, a whoopie pie and a drink. There will also be an option to purchase a half-chicken and drink only.
“The delicious chicken is from locally famous Chamber member Peters’ Barbecue,” Zell noted.
BY CATHY MOLITORIS“Partof REYS’ purpose is to provide students with activities that equip them with practical life skills,” said Hannah Wheeler, program and communication coordinator for Rainbow’s End Youth Services (REYS). With that in mind, the organization held its first Financial Reality Fair earlier this summer. The idea for the event came about after REYS executive director Cristina Paden connected with Steve Turpin at Lanco Federal Credit Union in Lancaster. “He mentioned that he has done financial literacy activities
at schools, and I asked for more information about the fair,” Paden recalled. “When I saw how awesome it was, I asked him if he’d do it for REYS. He said yes.”
For the fair, students in grades six through 12 had the opportunity to imagine what life would be like if they were adults living on their own. Each student was given a packet detailing his or her career, annual salary and current financial status. Students traveled to different
stations where they had to make decisions based on their financial means.
“They had to choose their lifestyle and where from their budget this money would be coming from at each station - housing, transportation, entertainment, phone plans, Wi-Fi technology, clothing and food,” Wheeler explained. After they visited all of the stations, students met with a financial adviser to discuss how much money they had
left to save or spend each month after their expenses.
“Some students did well in using their means wisely, while others made the wise decision to get a ‘part-time job’ or go back to the different stations to decrease their spending due to their lack of ability to save monthly,” Wheeler noted.
Wheeler remarked that the not only did the students have fun at the financial fair, but they also were proud of being able to make smart spending decisions within their given budgets. “It was encouraging to see the students gain confidence in their abilities to think critically

Money raised through the barbecue will be used to support Chamber programs and initiatives. “This is the Mount Joy Chamber’s major fundraiser,” Zell remarked, noting that proceeds support the operating costs of the Chamber and Visitor’s Center as well as funding seven annual scholarships for local students. The Chamber also hosts a variety of community events throughout the year, including the Music in Memorial Park concert series and visits with Santa.
Zell noted that the chicken barbecue requires the support of the community, including major sponsor and Diamond member Giant Food Stores Mount Joy. Gold Level sponsors are Engle Printing & Publishing Co., Inc; See Barbecue pg 2
“We are always looking to give students experiences and tools that will help them be successful in life.”

“We would also like to say a big thank you to the Milanof-Schock Library for allowing us to have our barbecue in their parking lot every year,” Zell remarked.
Chicken barbecue tickets are available at JB Hostetter & Sons, 1225 W. Main St., Mount Joy; the Milanof-
Schock Library; and the Chamber office, 62 E. Main St., Mount Joy. There is no deadline to purchase tickets, but Zell recommended purchasing early in case the event sells out.

Landis Valley Village and Farm Museum reinvents history
BY JEFF FALKThere’s ancient history. There’s modern history. And then there’s living history. At Landis Valley Village and Farm Museum, history is alive and thriving.
A Pennsylvania German heritage site situated at 2451 Kissel Hill Road, Lancaster, Landis Valley Village and Farm Museum is an exploratory learning tool and a portal to the locale’s past. Among its highlights are its interactive nature, craft demonstrations and volunteers dressed in period garb.
“George and Henry Landis envisioned Landis Valley being a Williamsburg in central Pennsylvania,” said Timothy Essig, a museum educator at Landis Valley Village and Farm Museum. “They envisioned this living history museum of Pennsylvania Dutch in southcentral Pennsylvania. Living history is a re-enactment of a previous
time period. When you come to Landis Valley and you see these different living history demonstrations, you see a living portrait of life from 200 years ago.”
Located in Manheim Township, Landis Valley Village and Farm Museum consists of 40 acres of general Pennsylvania Dutch living history surrounded by 60 acres of fields and farmland. Nearly 60 buildings have been erected on the property, some of which are historically interpreted constructions that provide the village with its 18th- and 19th-century atmosphere and others of which serve supportive purposes.
Landis Valley Village and Farm Museum is a stateoperated facility that is also supported by the Landis Valley Associates.
“Our goal continues to be to share the story of this unique culture in American history,” said Essig. “When you come to Landis Valley, you’re going to learn about agriculture, different trades and the architecture of the overall German contribution
to the American culture. We do tell a big story.”
The peoples who would later come to be known as Pennsylvania Dutch immigrated to the United States and the area in three distinct waves, from the 1680s to the 1840s. Brothers and Landis Valley founders Henry and George Landis collected more than 200,000 objects related to these immingrants’ culture and stored them in buildings that, in 1925, became the foundation upon which Landis Valley Village and Farm Museum was built.
When the state became involved with its operation in the mid-1950s, Landis Valley was transformed into the
living history village it is today.
“Henry and George Landis were two men focused on their culture,” said Essig. “They weren’t millionaires, but they spent their entire lives collecting artifacts of that culture.”
Today, Landis Valley Village and Farm Museum hosts nearly 70,000 visitors each year for school field trips, family vacation visits, bus trips from destinations mainly east of the Mississippi River, special events and facility rentals. The visitors come mostly from southeast and southcentral Pennsylvania, Maryland, Delaware and New Jersey and from as far away as the rest of the 50 states and even other countries.

The mission of Landis Valley Village and Farm Museum is supported by hundreds of volunteers.
“History is not ‘was’; history ‘is,’” said Essig. “You experience history when you visit Landis Valley Village and Farm Museum. History comes to life.”

Growing the garden
BY ADRIAN ESCHENWALDThe Edible Classroom, a nonprofit based in Washington Boro, has been selected as one of United Way’s Level Up and Launch Fellows. Through the annual program, United Way offered a $25,000 grant and has committed further fundraising support to the Edible Classroom, as well as nine other local nonprofits.
In addition to the initial grant, United Way will match the funds that the Edible Classroom raises until Friday, Nov. 10. Beth Horst and Grace Julian, cofounders of the Edible Classroom, plan to use the increased support to strengthen the organization’s existing programs and to expand its impact in the area. “As we were considering how to deepen our investment in our school districts, we saw this grant as an opportunity to expand in the community while remaining in the classroom,” Horst said.

of paid internships, where the students will participate in the operation and maintenance of new programs. The gardens will also serve as a platform for many local school districts to offer science classes, gardening courses and career training.
At Hamilton Elementary School in School District of Lancaster, the Edible Class-
room will expand the existing garden into an adjacent unused plot. The current garden is already being utilized for summer camps, community gatherings and garden education courses, but the expansion will allow for a larger space for events and easier public access to fresh produce. The Edible Classroom also plans to hold a series of workshops on site once the project is completed.

Wednesday-Sunday 11-5
As the Edible Classroom progresses its project at Hamilton Elementary School, it is simultaneously working on a similar venture at Columbia High School and Middle School Hill Campus. Although the twin projects share the same goals, the undertaking in Columbia will focus in part on addressing food insecurity in the district. The food grown in the garden will be distributed to students’ families through a partnership with Columbia Borough.
The Edible Classroom is currently in the early stages of planning the project, and Julian and Horst hope to begin installing the infrastructure for each garden in the fall. The nonprofit has also connected with local high schools to enlist the help of volunteer groups and those interested in becoming interns. “Right now, we’re just networking with community members to listen and learn from them,” Horst said. “We’re going to go through one portion at a time as we acquire the funds.”
