Lace Up For Orphans Brittany’s Hope Walk Of Love Set For Sept. 15 By Chelsea Peifer

The team members of Brittany’s Hope are thrilled to have an honored guest who has traveled all the way from Texas to train for and attend the 14th annual Walk of Love Cross Country 5K and Fun Walk on Saturday, Sept. 15, at Stone Gables Estate, 1 Hollinger Lane, Elizabethtown. Dolly, one of the newest miniature ponies to reside in the Shepherd’s Staff Petting Zoo at the Star Barn Village at Stone Gables Estate, has already begun training with caretaker and international award-winning trainer Carl O’Callaghan. Dolly will run the 5K

race pulling a cart with her trainer on board to help raise funds for Brittany’s Hope. “Dolly trains five days a week, so she’s pretty fit. We’re very fortunate because we’re here, so we can do the course a few times before the event,” O’Callaghan said. Brittany’s Hope is an Elizabethtown-based nonprofit organization committed to aiding orphans in crisis and helping special needs children to be adopted into forever families. Brittany’s Hope provides grants to families that are in the process of adopting and has implemented programs in Vietnam, Ethiopia, and Kenya that provide holistic care directly to orphans. Mai-Lynn Sahd, executive director of Brittany’s Hope, said that the organization has set a fundraising goal of $65,000 for

this year’s event. That amount would enable Brittany’s Hope to provide adoption grants for seven children with special needs or help with the construction of a muchneeded living residence for up to 28 orphaned children with disabilities in a rural and remote area of northern Vietnam. Sahd said the new residence will provide safe, modern, clean living space and bedrooms and feature adaptive furniture and bathrooms to enable the children to gain independence. A physical therapy room and common area for the children are also planned, and the residence will be staffed by trained professionals who can provide 24/7 medical care and help the youths to develop basic living skills. The Walk of Love, a fun-filled, family-friendly event, will begin at See Walk Of Love pg 4

Marietta Town Talk To Focus On Simon Cameron By Chelsea Peifer

Main Street Mount Joy Welcomes New Executive Director By Chelsea Peifer

Having grown up in Harrisburg, pastor Robert M. Lescallette has been familiar with the name “Cameron” for as long as he can remember. “My grandparents lived on Cameron Street, and Simon Cameron is buried near their house,” Lescallette said. As pastor at St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Maytown, Lescallette has lived in the brick parsonage that was deeded to the church by none other than Cameron himself. On Sunday, Aug. 12, Lescallette will share his research on and knowledge of Cameron at a Marietta Town Talk titled “Simon Cameron: Much More See Town Talk pg 2

In July, Main Street Mount Joy (MSMJ) welcomed Dave Schell as its new executive director. While the position may be new to him, serving the Mount Joy community has been a staple of Schell’s life since moving to the area a few decades ago, and area residents will likely recognize his face. “I’ve been interested in the economic development and success of Mount Joy for about 20 years,” shared Schell, who served on the MSMJ board for several years - most recently as vice president. MSMJ is a charitable organization focused on downtown revitalization and funded by the Mount Joy Borough, See MSMJ pg 7

In July, Dave Schell transitioned from serving as vice president of the Main Street Mount Joy board to becoming the organization’s new executive director.

Than a ‘Red Hot Stove.’” The presentation will begin at 2:30 p.m. at the Marietta Community House, 264 W. Market St., Marietta. Light refreshments will be provided following the program. The board of the Marietta Community House offers the Sunday afternoon Town Talks free of charge as a community service in accordance with the purpose of the organization’s mission to promote “the spiritual, intellectual, educational, social, and physical welfare of men, women, and children.” Lescallette will offer an unbiased look into the life of Cameron, Pennsylvania’s consummate politician who was born in Maytown in 1799 and died at his Donegal Springs mansion in 1889. Oftentimes people know little more about Cameron than that he and Thaddeus Stevens were adversaries, and according to Lescallette, a quotation about Cameron and “a red hot stove” has been attributed to Stevens. “He had a reputation as something of a shyster. Like everybody that has ever lived, Simon Cameron was good, bad, and indifferent,” remarked Lescallette. Cameron had remarkable life accomplishments despite a difficult early start in life, including becoming a pre-eminent state and national political figure in the 19th century. “As many things as

Worship, Outreach from pg 1

Simon did in his life, being a printer was what he was most proud of, and he had that listed on his gravestone,” noted Lescallette. For his presentation, Lescallette will bring along a large portrait of Cameron that is hanging up inside the parsonage at St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Maytown. Part of Cameron’s orders in deeding the building to the church required the portraits of Cameron and his wife to be kept on display. Lescallette is a graduate of Dickinson College and the Lutheran Theological Seminary at Gettysburg. He recently celebrated 40 years as pastor at St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Maytown and will preach his final sermon as pastor at the church on Sunday, Aug. 26. Lescallette is well-known for his love and knowledge of history, both biblical and local, and he is one of the founding members of the Maytown Historical Society. The next Marietta Town Talk is planned for Sunday, Oct. 28. Jim Landis will present “History Reposed.” To learn more, readers may call 717-426-1694 or visit https://mariettacommunity house.org/. The Marietta Community House will celebrate the centennial of its dedication to the people of Marietta on Friday, Dec. 6, 2019.

On July 29, instead of conducting church services as usual, people from 12 Elizabethtownarea churches met for a corporate worship service at Elizabethtown Community Park before spreading out in the community to complete a variety of service projects. Don Lamb, who serves as a pastor of LifeGate, oversaw the bulk of the planning efforts along with the following pastors: Tom Barnett of Dove Fellowship, Mel Weaver of Grace Chapel, Kirk Belmont of Hope Community, E. Daniel Martin of LifeGate, Jim Moynihan of Elizabethtown Alliance, Fred Garber of Bosslers Mennonite, Robert Nolt of Good’s Mennonite, Conrad Kanagy of Elizabethtown Mennonite, Daryl Heistand of Rissers Mennonite, Al Frank of Conoy Brethren in Christ, Ken Witmer of Elizabethtown United Zion, and David Robinson of First Church of God. According to Belmont, many of those leaders meet together on Wednesday mornings for a regular time of prayer. Belmont said that the conversation about how to best serve the local community has been happening for many years among the leaders in the Elizabethtown Ministerium, but more recently the conversation changed angles by asking, “How do we do that together?” Last fall, Don had the idea for a corporate day of service among the area churches and began approaching local pastors about whether they would be interested in planning something along those lines. Belmont shared about a switch that Hope Community Church began four years ago of designating fifth Sundays which occur four times a year for church members to gather for breakfast and then go out and

serve the community. “We do things locally and regionally,” noted Belmont. Local projects have included visiting nursing homes, inviting neighborhood children to join in a community kickball game, raking leaves, and assisting single parents, widows, and elderly residents with various needs. Regionally, church members work with North Star Initiative. That concept was expanded upon for the corporate event on July 29, which included a worship service led by various churches and individuals. Doug Lamb, chairman of the Elizabethtown Ministerium, presented a brief devotional, and individuals from Hope Community Church led a time of worship. “Multiple people were involved, and at one point every pastor was on stage for a corporate time of prayer,” Belmont said. At 10 a.m., those gathered split into teams to complete the various service projects. Efforts included cleaning, weeding, and mulching at Hope Within Ministries; doing work at other various nonprofit organizations; completing yardwork for elderly residents; assisting families in need; picking up litter; mulching and making playground updates at Elizabethtown Community Park; washing police vehicles and painting for Elizabethtown Borough; and reorganizing a furniture bank. At 1 p.m., everyone returned to the park for lunch and to share testimonies from the morning. Event leaders have scheduled a meeting to evaluate the event and whether it will take place again in the future. Belmont is hopeful that it will. “Based on the conversations that I’ve had with people (who participated) as well as other pastors, I would guess that we’d do it again,” remarked Belmont.

SVGTO Plans Annual All Pontiac Show By Dayna M. Reidenouer

The 2017 All Pontiac Show hosted by the Susquehanna Valley GTO (SVGTO) drew 187 vehicles. “We typically get guests from eight to 10 states,” SVGTO president Vic Schreck said. “Many will trailer their cars. We’ll secure an area hotel with an event discount for those who wish to stay overnight.” Last year’s show was the 10th hosted by the SVGTO. In June this year, the club used its expertise to host the 39th annual GTO Association of America (GTOAA) International Convention in Valley Forge. More than 300 Ponti-

acs from the United States and Canada were entered in the event. A total of 414 people registered for the convention, which was the largest since 2004, when it was held in Pontiac, Mich. “The longest distance driven was a guy in his 1965 Le Mans who drove it 2,500 miles from Spokane, Wash., and then drove it back,” marveled Schreck, who was recently installed as the GTOAA national president. The GTOAA has about 4,000 members from the United States, Europe, Canada, and Australia. The SVGTO hopes to draw another big crowd for the 11th annual All Pontiac Show, which will be held on Saturday, Aug.

The 45th annual Elizabethtown Fair will open on Monday, Aug. 20, and continue through Saturday, Aug. 25, at the fairgrounds, 900 E. High St., Elizabethtown. Those who would like to bid on some of the award-winning items at the fair will have the opportunity to do so in three auctions during the week. The first auction will feature baked goods entered into the fair competitions by area residents and will take place at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 21, on Stage 2. Elizabethtown Fair president Kenneth Myer will serve as auctioneer, and he will be assisted by John Carl. All of the baked goods entered in the competitive exhibits area will be up for bids, including the Best of Show Decorated Cake; Blue Ribbon Apple Pie; Angel Food Cake; Chocolate Cake; PA Preferred Junior Brownie, Cookie, or Bar Cookie; and all Mars Wrigley Confectionery entries. The annual Sale of Champions auction will take place on Wednesday, Aug. 22, following the Supreme Champion events in the show ring. Rabbit meat pens, dairy feeder calves, beef, goats, market lambs, and swine will be auctioned off by Harry Bachman and Carl. Proceeds from the sales will benefit local youths. Thirdly, the annual arts and crafts auction will offer several items donated by local artists, craftspeople, merchants, and fair vendors. Myer and Carl will once again serve as the auctioneers, and the event will begin at 7 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 24, on Stage 2. Items up for bids will include the Elizabethtown Fair Premium Book cover painting that was created by local artist Nancy Landis. Landis resides in Elizabethtown with her husband and serves as director of the Winters Heritage House Museum. Landis has enjoyed painting numerous premium book covers as her way of assisting with the Elizabethtown Fair. “This year’s fair book

cover is a tribute to the youths who raise, care for, and bring their animals to the Elizabethtown Fair each August,” Landis stated. “A casual observer may at first assume the livestock show is all about the animals in the ring. However, it is the young handlers who are the stars, exhibiting a wealth of dedication, love, knowledge, and courage as they raise, show, and sell their livestock.” “In a circle, one ring larger yet just as important, is the Elizabethtown community - families, businesses, and organizations that encourage, support, and celebrate our agricultural heritage,” Landis continued. The original cover painting will be auctioned off at 9 p.m. Additional items will include floral arrangements in dated crocks designed by local florists. Proceeds from the baked goods and arts and crafts auctions will benefit the Elizabethtown Fair. Arts and crafts auction donations are still being sought. Individuals who are interested in donating an item may contact Darlene Halterman at 717-3670108 or drop off a donation at the Elizabethtown Fair office between 9 a.m. and noon on Saturday, Aug. 18. For more details on the Elizabethtown Fair, readers may visit http://etownfair.org. Contest and entry information is also listed in the Elizabethtown Fair Premium Book, copies of which are available at Brandt’s Farm Supply, the Elizabethtown Borough office, Darrenkamp’s Elizabethtown Market, Groff’s Meats, White Oak Mills, and the Winters Heritage House Museum. Pictured on front: The Sale of Champions livestock auction will take place on Aug. 22 during the Elizabethtown Fair, which will run from Aug. 20 to 25. local business sponsors, and various grants, as well as proceeds from community events it hosts. A former Mount Joy Chamber of Commerce president, Schell was also involved with REACH, a predecessor program to MSMJ, and watched that program flourish and change into MSMJ. He has assisted with MSMJ’s website and technical support since the organization’s inception in addition to running his own web design company and working with business owners on marketing, business strategy, promotion, and business consulting. “As a local business owner, the success of the town is very important to me. I know several business owners and their families,” said Schell. “It seemed like a natural fit for me to move into this position.” Working with many of the business owners along Main Street over the years and getting to know their families has made Schell all the more eager to see each one succeed. “The ones I don’t know personally, I want to know. Mount Joy is unique because of the business owners and their deep roots in this community,” explained Schell. “I’ve learned there is a very large family tree in Mount Joy, and they are quick to add you to their branches. We are also unique because we have large village-type neighborhood areas surrounding our downtown. I want the residents to come downtown to see what we offer.” Schell would like to enhance the successful events that MSMJ already plans, as well as add some new things into the mix. According to Schell, this summer’s Taste of Mount Joy Cruisin’ Cuisine event on July 28 was “the biggest car show

Specializing in protecting you & your family… we’ve ever had.” He added, “We had 257 vehicles, and we’re talking about how to expand it for next year.” Plans are already underway for perennially popular events - such as Blues, Brews, and Barbecue in September and Winterfest in December - to continue. Schell is brainstorming ideas for new events too, such as a Halloween party for adults perhaps with a cosplay angle, depending on interest. An outdoor yoga class is currently in the works, with details coming soon. Each MSMJ event is coordinated by a team of volunteers, and new volunteers are always welcome. “The more volunteers we have, the more we can do,” added Schell. In the case of Fourth Fridays, which Schell said were initially a hit, he envisions evolving the concept to highlight local artists, musicians, and bands. Schell has already begun spotlighting the Mount Joy art scene by inviting local artists to showcase their work in one of the large window displays in front of the MSMJ office at 55 E. Main St. “ We’re already booked out until July 2019,” said Schell with a smile. “It’s amazing how many people stop by and look and linger.” Each artist will have access to the space for one month, and interested individuals are welcome to contact Schell at msmj@msmj.comcastbiz.net or 717-653-4227 to sign up. Schell welcomes feedback and suggestions from the community. He often gauges interest from the public at w w w. f a c e b o o k . c o m / M a i n StreetMountJoy, where event updates and details are also posted. “It seems like there’s a new resurgence (of interest), and I want to keep that going,” remarked Schell.

Peggy McFarland estimates that for the last 20 years or so, there has been talk of the need for a building that could house all of Elizabethtown’s community service organizations in one place. “Everything is very scattered, and that makes it very difficult for clients to access everything,” explained McFarland, who serves as a clinical social worker and board chair for Elizabethtown Community Housing and Outreach Services (ECHOS). The goal was to find a space in town that would be walkable or easily accessible by public transportation for clients, but for years no real estate options seemed to fit that bill. Now, thanks to a collaborative effort between United Churches Elizabethtown Area (UCEA) and community members, organizations, businesses, and social service providers, that dream is taking root. Earlier this year, UCEA purchased the brick building at 61 E. Washington St., Elizabethtown, that formerly belonged to St. Peter Parochial School. Once permits have been approved and renovations completed, the property will be known as Community Place on Washington. Danielle Lindemuth of UCEA said that an official move-in date has yet to be determined. Space will be rented out to agencies including ECHOS, Community Cupboard of Elizabethtown, Elizabethtown Area HUB, Bear Bags, and Elizabethtown Area Communities That Care (EACTC). It will also house a clothing bank and offer services such as job skills training, counseling, GED and ESL classes, PA 211: Community Resources, the United Way’s Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA), and more. “It’s great because it’s a community effort and not just one agency,” McFarland emphasized. “It’s really going to help our clients. The social problems are still here - drug issues, homelessness, hunger, lack of child care - but we’re going to try to maximize our community resources so that we can better serve people.” Melissa Rhoads, director of the Community Cupboard of Elizabethtown, is thrilled about the way the new space will enable her to better serve and direct clients. “Now I’ll be able to say, ‘If you didn’t know about ECHOS, they’re right upstairs,’” Rhoads remarked. A portion of the money needed for the project has already been raised and donated by the UCEA. According to McFarland, approximately $1.5 million is still needed to complete renovations and phase two of the project, which includes adding another building to the property to serve as the ECHOS shelter. The public is invited to attend the launch event for the Community Place on Washington Capital Campaign from 4 to 7 p.m. on

EMERGENCY SERVICE

This year, the Columbia ReUzit Shop, 363 Locust St., is celebrating 40 years of serving the community. To honor the dozens of volunteers who run the notfor-profit thrift store, a catered banquet was held on July 27 at Manor Church. Attendees heard reflections from one of the store’s founding members, Ruth Charles, as well as updates from chairman of the board Nelson Hershey and current store manager Kathryn Ferree. In 1978, Ruth was volunteering at the Mount Joy Re-Uzit Shop (now the Mount Joy Gift and Thrift) when a manager approached her to see if she would consider forming a group of ladies to open a similar shop in Columbia. Ruth prayerfully gathered several women together who began looking for a small building in Columbia to use for the new not-for-profit shop. Like other Mennonite Central Committee (MCC) thrift shops throughout the country, the new Columbia store would be volunteer-run and support the local and global relief and development efforts of MCC. “It was birthed by prayer, and we sought the Lord’s direction before we moved forward, recalled Ruth. The ladies found a small space to rent a block north of the store’s current location that needed minimal renovations. With donations passed on from the excess at the Mount Joy store, the group of dedicated volunteers opened the doors of the Columbia Re-Uzit Shop on Dec. 15, 1978, with a warm reception from grateful neighbors and visitors. For many years, the volunteers would sort, price, and pack donations at the home of manager Grace Huber before transporting them back to the store to be displayed and sold. Eventually, the lack of space, combined with the shop’s growth and popularity, led to the search for a larger location in Columbia. Hershey was one of several individuals that Ruth’s husband, Abe Charles, asked to serve on the original board of directors and take part in the search for a building to purchase. Abe served as bishop of what was then the Manor District of Mennonite Churches, where many of the store’s founders and volunteers attended. Abe, Paul Charles, and Hershey walked the streets of

Columbia looking for a new storefront. “Nothing seemed right, but then I drove past (our current location) and it caught my eye,â€? recalled Hershey. The burned-out, boarded-up, blackas-coal hardware store that had sat vacant for several years left the board members somewhat uneasy, so they sought advice from the board members of the Mount Joy Re-Uzit and committed the decision to prayer until Hershey said they felt the Lord confirm that 363 Locust St. was to be the new location. After purchasing the building in 1987, volunteers spent countless hours cleaning and restoring it before opening at the new spot in January 1988. The Columbia Re-Uzit Shop gained additional space in 2003, when it expanded to encompass the building next door. Today the retail space offers shoppers a selection of women’s, men’s, and children’s clothing and shoes, as well as furniture, housewares, small appliances, linens, home dĂŠcor, plants, toys, games, books, greeting cards, and miscellaneous items. An ongoing silent auction is another popular part of the shop where guests enjoy bidding on antiques, collectibles, and unusual items. Volunteers are needed to serve in various capacities, and interested individuals may visit the store to apply. Time commitment is up to the individual. Proceeds support MCC, as well as the Hands Across the Street ministry, which serves individuals in need in the Columbia area. The Columbia Re-Uzit Shop is open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Mondays through Saturdays. Donations of quality, gently used items are accepted at the store during regular business hours. Readers with questions may call the store at 717-684-7621.
