Connecting The Community Through Art Heart Of Lancaster Show Planned By Chelsea Peifer

“Our show is geared for the community, and we always make sure that it’s free,” explained Marilyn Hobday, founder of Heart of Lancaster Arts and Craft Show. As an artist and retired educator, Hobday is passionate, to say the least, about making sure that the arts continue to thrive in Lancaster and that everyone has a part in them. “We try very hard to focus on local artists, although we do have artists that come from all along the East Coast,” said Hobday. The 32nd annual Heart of Lancaster Arts and Craft Show is set to take place from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 31 and Sept. 1, at Root’s Country Market, 705 Graystone Road,

The 32nd annual Heart of Lancaster Arts and Craft Show on Aug. 31 and Sept. 1 at Root’s Country Market in Manheim will feature 200 juried artists, demonstrations, and live music. Admission and parking are free. Manheim. Admission and parking are both free, and the outdoor show will take place rain or shine. Live music will be performed by jazz band Over Easy on both days, and food and beverages will be

available to purchase. The show will feature the work of 200 juried artists, including 50 newcomers. “Customers are excited about coming every year because they like both: seeing

some of the same people and seeing some new artists, too,” said Hobday. “All of the people that are coming are working very hard at their art. I like to see small businesses like that thrive.” See Heart Of Lancaster pg 5

Equipping Parents For Success Labor Day Auction To Feature Children’s Playroom Tools And Much More Gears Up For Autumn By Chelsea Peifer

Vicki Dolan, executive director of Children’s Playroom of Lancaster County, often tells moms and dads that parenting is the most important job they will ever have, and it is also the hardest. Dolan is

passionate about setting parents up for success as they navigate that journey, which is why she founded Children’s Playroom, a parenting support group that exists to let people know that there are others who are going through the same parenting difficulties and that they are not alone. See Children s Playroom pg 4

As Hospice & Community Care (HCC) donor relations manager Coco Minardi reviewed the items pulled for a photo to advertise the 35th annual Labor Day Auction set for Saturday, Aug. 31, and Monday, Sept. 2, she laughed. “An autographed football, a life-size NASCAR poster, a quilt, and a mailbox: That’s the randomness of the auction right there.” Indeed, at first glance it might seem like the epic two-day sale is full of a jumble of items every year, but it is all very deliberate. The things that have See Auction pg 6

John Halvorsen, a pastor from Duluth, Minn., recent completed Prayer Walk America, which took him from Santa Monica Pier in Los Angeles, Calif., to Manhattan, N.Y., in 38 weeks. “We started Oct. 31, 2018,” said John, who averaged 16 miles a day. He arrived in Times Square on July 31. Along the way, he and his wife, Sandy, who followed along on John’s walk in a motorhome, stopped in Lancaster for dinner at St. Thomas Episcopal Church in Manheim Township. This walk, the most recent of several John has completed, was titled “Prayer Walk America - An Appeal to Heaven.” “This is … an appeal to people to start praying,” said John between bites as he enjoyed his potluck dinner at the church. “The response has been so positive.” John said that Sandy, who generally travels 2 to 3 miles ahead of him while he is walking, has asked people along the route how the couple can pray for them. “People start crying, pouring out their hearts, asking for prayer,” said John, who recalled several talks with farmers in Ohio, Indiana, and Illinois. “We walked through fields that were muddy, and they couldn’t get the tractors in to plant or the

seed was rotting,” he said, adding that one of the farmers told him, “I think God is trying to get our attention.” John received his first call to embark on a prayer walk while he and Sandy were serving as missionaries in Ireland working with Harvest Network International. “I suddenly received a burden for the United States,” said John, who was in Ireland with Sandy from 1991 to 1998. “After a year of trying to discern what the Lord was saying, we turned the reins over to another couple and moved back to the United States.” Back in Minnesota, John began doing pastoral work. “I would go to the Mall of America to pray daily, and I would walk around the mall, so people called me the pastor of the Mall of America.” John said that in 1998, God gave him a vision of walking across America, along with a verse. “Genesis 13:17 came to me,” said John. “‘Get up and walk the length and the breadth of the land.’” John began to ask God what the cause would be for the action. “I felt the Lord was saying, ‘There are tumultuous times coming to America, and I am going to grant you unusual favor with the press.’” On Sept. 21, 1998, John began walking from the Canadian border in Minnesota, and he ended the walk when he arrived in Gulfport, Miss., on Jan. 4, 1999. His journey was chronicled by a country music radio station that asked him to call in weekly with updates. Billy Graham’s organization interviewed John four times, and he was also interviewed by Bill Bright. John said God’s message for listeners was that tumultuous times were coming, and it was important to pray. “This was before 9/11,” noted John. In April of 1999, John and Sandy traveled to the West Coast to begin his first cross-country walk. “We started in a fishing village in Oregon,” recalled John, who See Across America pg 3

said that the walk ended in Rehoboth Beach, Del., in November of 1999. “Again, we had favor with the press,” said John. In 2008, John felt the Lord calling him to walk from Portugal to China. He began in Cabo da Roca, Portugal, the westernmost point of continental Europe, and walked 6,020 miles to an area near China, while praying blessings on the countries he passed through. During the recent trip, John carried a special flag bearing the image of a pine tree and the words “An Appeal to Heaven.” The flag is a replica of one that George Washington used during the Revolutionary War. “They knew at the time that unless an appeal to heaven was made, the Revolutionary War would not be won,” said Sandy. “John felt he should carry this flag, as we are making an appeal to heaven for awakening for this nation. We need the outpouring of the Holy Spirit. We need the Lord,” she said. Readers who wish to learn more about the Halvorsens’ mission may visit www.prayerwalkamerica.com.

This summer, more than 20 congregants from Lebanon Valley Bible Church and Community Bible Church in Marietta hosted Bible training sessions for more than 100 Rama adults and children. FIA’s strategy is to teach the entire Bible chronologically to the people while also progressing on a cohesive community development plan. Additionally, seven mother-daughter or grandmother-daughter pairs hosted a vacation Bible school for more than 60 of the Rama children. The visiting teams led older Rama children through Bible stories about John the Baptist and the start of Jesus’ ministry, while younger children learned about the seven days of Creation. Volunteers

Rama Cay women and American volunteers gathered for a discussion during the volunteers’ visit to Nicaragua. reported that the children asked questions, completed crafts, played competitive games, sang Bible songs, and gave plenty of hugs. They also received candy treats, which they called sugar plums regardless of the variety. Linda Esbenshade shared that she and her granddaughter Anya were impacted by the friendliness of the people. FIA also recently drilled a well and constructed a laundry/shower house for the Rama Cay people. Readers can learn more about local travelers’ efforts on 10 projects in six

It also helps with easing children (and parents) into transitions, as parents are only a room away and the staff members provide updates as needed. Plus, the children have fun socializing with peers. “When I asked my son what he misses about Children’s Playroom, he said, ‘My friends,’” relayed Moore. “The moms develop friendships too. You can share what your deepest failures are, and there’s no judgment,” said Martin. “The support is huge,” agreed Moore. “I didn’t realize how much I would need that support as a stay-at-home parent.” In addition to morning sessions, Children’s Playroom offers a single moms’ parenting program every other Wednesday from 5 to 7:30 p.m. Dinner is provided, and the group follows the same format of playtime together followed by a time where moms split off for discussion while the children have supervised activities in another room. Readers who would like more information or to register for Children’s Playroom may call 717-945-9348 or visit www.childrensplayroom.org.

that has been a game-changer for Cathi Martin, an Elizabethtown mother of four children ranging from ages 10 to 1, who will be attending Children’s Playroom for her eighth year this fall. “(Children’s Playroom) really has made me feel more confident in my purpose as a parent of my kids. It’s given me direction,” said Martin. “(Positive discipline) makes me feel better as a parent because it’s just a more positive way of handling things.” At first, her husband was apprehensive about the term “positive discipline,” but once she explained and modeled tools she learned at Children’s Playroom such as asking versus telling - and he saw that they worked, he was on board. Manheim resident and mother of three Lisa Moore said that since attending Children’s Playroom, she has noticed that she yells a lot less - a result that also thrills

“We have a lot more 2-D art this year, which is nice. It’s not quite 50-50, but we’re getting there,” Hobday noted. “The most important thing is the diversity of merchandise that is coming.” She is also proud to have a show that offers customers artwork at a variety of price points. “I think the customers love this show because it’s affordable,” remarked Hobday. Another one of the show’s trademarks is live demonstrations, and Hobday said that 50 artists will be demonstrating their crafts for visitors this year. Balloon sculptures, metalwork, and henna tattoos are just a few of the processes that visitors will be able to get a glimpse of. This year’s featured artists are Laura Mark Finberg of Pequea, a nationally known wildlife painter; Andrew Loercher of Lancaster, who creates handmade redware pottery; and Tim Mateer of Mount Joy, an international wildlife photographer. Each of the artists will be highlighted in the free magazine available to patrons at the information booth, where people may also enter to win drawings for gift cards to use at the show. Winners will be announced every hour. Each show applicant must submit a detailed report on how his or her products are made in order to make sure that the show’s selection is an honest representation of handmade arts and crafts. “We’re really good to our exhibitors. We cater to them because everyone who serves on the (show’s) committee has to be a working artist,” said Hobday, who serves as chairperson of the show’s planning committee, which also includes Loercher, Bunny Switzenburg, Susan Quinn, Melissa Ward Carroll, and Jessica Keener. “We always try to shine light on a local charity, and this year it will be The Common Wheel,” stated Hobday. Based in downtown Lancaster, The Common Wheel offers an after-school Earn-a-Bike program that provides students ages 12 to 17 with the opportunity to fix up and keep a bicycle that they can call their own and receive training in bicycle assembly, maintenance, and safety. According to https://thecommon wheel.com, the organization also gifted bicycles to 375 children through its Holiday Bike Drive. Its Bikes For All program, which supplies low income individuals with reliable transportation via a bicycle, has had 58 beneficiaries. A donation box will be set up at the Heart of Lancaster for those interested in donating to The Common Wheel. For more information about the Heart of Lancaster Arts and Craft Show, readers may visit www.hlcshow.com.

The annual Geological Walk at the Haldeman Mansion, 230 Locust Grove Road, Bainbridge, will take place on Saturday, Aug. 24, at 10 a.m. Attendees should plan to arrive between 9:30 and 9:55 a.m. to register. Jeri Jones, an expert in geology and the owner of Jones Geological Services, will explain the different kinds of stone used to build the Haldeman Mansion. Jones will take the group to the stone wall facing the river and the creek nearby, and he will point out where

been donated to the auction are grouped by type, such as plants, quilts, sports memorabilia, used cars, and artwork. This year, the event will feature a tool auction for the first time. “We work with the Amish community, and they do all of our food, which brought in $80,000 last year, but not many Amish people attend the auction,” Minardi explained. In an effort to appeal to more Amish folks, the auction committee asked for advice, and “add tools” was the resounding response. “We called local construction companies,

one quarry is located on the property. At each of the tour’s seven stops, Jones will provide scientific and historical information. His talk will also include humor and opportunities for attendees to ask questions. Attendees should wear comfortable shoes. In the case of rain, Jones will present a slideshow inside the mansion. Bottled water will be provided. There is a set fee to cover the costs of the event. For more information, readers may contact Elaine Jackson at 717-426-3794.

and hospice families have been cleaning out their sheds,” Minardi said. Decommissioned commercial-grade tools and equipment, as well as household tools, have been donated for the auction, and they will be sold to the highest bidders on Aug. 31 from 9 a.m. to noon in the second half of the plant building. “We’re hoping we strike a chord with people who are do-it-yourselfers or Amish,” Minardi remarked. The Labor Day Auction started in Lampeter, but four years ago, the event

moved to the Solanco Fairgrounds, 172 S. Lime St., Quarryville, where it has flourished. The site offers ample free parking, and there is team parking at the venue as well. Golf carts will be available to shuttle people to and from their cars as needed. Minardi reported that the first auction more than three decades ago raised $1,300, and the advertising material was not even the size of a half-sheet of letter paper. Last year’s event brought in $760,000. “We can’t fit all (of the details) on anything smaller than eight pages,” she marveled. The fairgrounds will open at 7:30 a.m. on Aug. 31 and Sept. 2 so visitors may register for bidder numbers, purchase their allyou-can-eat food passes, and preview the items. The food tents will open on Aug. 31 at 9 a.m. and will feature omelets and sticky buns for breakfast and pork barbecue for lunch. Breakfast logs - those culinary delights of bacon or sausage, scrambled eggs, and cheese baked in a buttery soft pretzel crust - will be available when the food tents open at 8:30 a.m. on Sept. 2. Minardi noted that an HCC volunteer is known to bring a cooler to the sale so she can buy two dozen breakfast logs to take home, freeze, and enjoy later. Sept. 2 will also feature barbecued chicken and ribs, as well as doughnuts made on-site. The food offerings on both days will include fried shrimp, a salad bar, fresh fruit, smoothies, chocolate milk, and more. Minardi and the auction committee are still accepting donations for the auction. They are especially looking for used cars and quilts. A number of unique items have already been donated. Of special

note are Ty Cobb baseball cards from 1909 and 1911. The collectors’ items will be sold on Sept. 2 at noon in the sports building. An Amish buggy will be up for bids, as well as sheds, a gazebo, and vacation stays for large groups of people. Recommendations of delivery services for the structures will be provided. For folks who would like to contribute to HCC without taking things home, the Day of Care Auction, which is sponsored by Engle Printing & Publishing Co., Inc., will be held at noon both days. Television personalities Corinne Lillis and Anne Shannon will host the auctions, during which attendees may virtually purchase days of care for hospice clients. The average daily cost of providing hospice care for one person is $187, Minardi said. The proceeds from the Labor Day Auction will go directly to HCC’s programs. The nonprofit organization has operations in Lancaster and York counties and provides palliative care, bereavement help, chaplain and auxiliary services, individual and group counseling, physical and online resource libraries, and more. In 2018, HCC served more than 15,000 families. Minardi noted that HCC serves more than 60 percent of the people who die in Lancaster County and a quarter of the deceased in York County. HCC also offers services for people who have experienced tragic loss, including the death of pets. To donate items for the auction, readers may contact special events coordinator Devon Fiore at 717-391-2434 or dfiore@hospicecommunity.org. Isaac Volpe of Mount Joy competed at the North American Irish Dance Championships in Vancouver, Canada, on July 2 and brought home top honors. Volpe placed 10th in North America in the Boys Under Sixteen Championship Competition, which qualifies him to compete in the 2020 Irish Dance World Championships to be held in April 2020 in Dublin, Ireland. The Boys Under Sixteen Championship Competition began with participants dancing two different rounds, each in front of a separate panel of three judges. The scores from the two rounds were combined for an overall score, and those dancers in the top 50% of the combined scores advanced to a third round, where they danced a hard shoe solo piece specifically choreographed for them. The scores of three additional judges from the third round were then added to their other scores to make up their final score.
