In lieu of a sweet 16th birthday celebration a few years ago, Sayali Yoder opted to invite friends and family to join her in participating in the Brittany’s Hope Walk of Love Cross Country 5K and Fun Walk. Sayali’s parents received one of the very first adoption grants awarded by Brittany’s Hope, an Elizabethtown-based nonprofit committed to aiding orphans in crisis around the world. Born without hands and feet, Sayali went through more than 26 surgeries and lived in an orphanage until being adopted at age 3. Today, she is determined to give back to the organization that she says helped her to become who she is.
Sayali faithfully trained for the 5K by taking daily walks with her boxer, Athena, and set a fundraising goal of $1,000 - only to surpass that goal by raising more than $5,000. The race itself proved to be a challenge, as her prostheses are not designed for far distances or bumpy terrain, but she crossed the finish line. Now a college sophomore majoring in video production, Sayali plans to once again participate in the Brittany’s Hope Walk of Love Cross Country 5K and raise funds to help children in need. This year’s Walk of Love Cross Country 5K and Fun Walk is set to take place on Saturday, Sept. 14, at Stone Gables Estate, 1 Hollinger Lane, Elizabethtown. The family-friendly event will include a 5K, a fun walk, pony rides, an inflatable obstacle course for children, games and activities, giveaways, and food. See Walk Of Love pg 4
Friends Of Mount Bethel Plan Fête En Noir Fundraiser The Friends of Mount Bethel Cemetery have announced a fundraiser to benefit Columbia’s historic Mount Bethel Cemetery, which serves as the final resting place of many persons who played key roles in Columbia’s history. On Friday, Sept. 13, the Friends of Mount Bethel Cemetery will host the group’s second Fête en Noir in the cemetery at 700 Locust St., Columbia. Entrance to the grounds will begin at 5:30 p.m. This bring-your-own-picnic event will run from 6 to 9 p.m., with music for listening or dancing provided throughout the evening. Seating will be provided for See Fête En Noir pg 2
Sayali Yoder, pictured crossing the finish line at the Brittany’s Hope Walk of Love Cross Country 5K in 2015 (top photo) and as a toddler (right photo), is training to participate in this year’s 5K on Sept. 14 at Ironstone Ranch in Elizabethtown. Sayali was born with missing limbs, and her parents received one of the first adoption grants awarded by Brittany’s Hope.
Take A Ride On The Susquehanna SNHA Launches Pilot Season Of Free Riverboat Tours By Chelsea Peifer
The Friends of the Mount Bethel Cemetery, including (standing, from left) Albert Storm, Claire Storm, Kathleen Hohenadel, (seated) Kathleen Lutz, and Jane Moore, invite the community to a Fête en Noir in the cemetery on Sept. 13. Attendees should dress in all black for the bringyour-own-picnic fundraising event.
Cruising along the Susquehanna River in a pontoon boat while hearing about the history of the area was an activity the team at Susquehanna National Heritage Area (SNHA) wanted to offer to locals - and visitors - to make sure more people had a chance to enjoy all that the river has to offer. On July 13, SNHA launched its pilot season of River Discovery Boat Tours with resounding success. Paul Nevin, manager of Zimmerman Center for Heritage, which is operated by SNHA, said that the tours were so popular that within hours of the first See Boat Tours pg 3
The Logue family, (from left) Ethan, Kelly, Katie, and Jason, enjoyed one of the free River Discovery Boat Tours offered by the Susquehanna National Heritage Area over the summer. The pilot season of tours will continue on Fridays through Sundays through Oct. 13.

Boat Tours from pg 1 portions of the approximately 17-mile tour give participants a glimpse of portions of the river that cannot be seen from the roadways. “When you’re driving across the river, you don’t get the sense of scale that you do being out on a boat,” noted Nevin. Tourgoers saw plenty of wildlife on the summer tours, including numerous sightings of the often-elusive bald eagles. Visitors will get a glimpse of life along the Susquehanna River as it as today and hear about what it was like in years gone by. Stories about the rich history of the Lake Clarke portion of the river date back to when the area was the heartland of the Native American Susquehannock people. Nevin, who also serves on the board of the Society for Pennsylvania Archaeology, shares about the ancient Susquehanna River rock art that is primarily located in and along the river from Washington Boro to the Maryland state line. “The Native Americans saw this as a special place. They created rock art here not to make it sacred but rather because they saw it as sacred already,” remarked Nevin. “Something is special about this part of the river.” More recent history includes the construction of the railways along the river, thriving shad fisheries, and communities that grew as the Holtwood and Safe Harbor Dams were built. According to SNHA president Mark Platts, the River Discovery Boat Tours are

round of free tickets being made available online, every spot filled up for the free pontoon boat tours offered at three times on Saturdays and Sundays in July and August. “The response has been overwhelming,” said Nevin, who is one of the three guides who alternate taking the lead for the boat tours. The tours begin and end at the dock across the street from the Zimmerman Center for Heritage, 1706 Long Level Road, Wrightsville. Nevin said that due to the enormous popularity of the boat tours, SNHA decided to expand its pilot season to include Fridays and to extend through Sunday, Oct. 13, rather than ending in August. Reservations may be made at www.susquehannaheritage.org/ programs/boat-tours. The free tours are available at 10:30 a.m., 12:30 p.m., and 2:30 p.m. on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays through Oct. 13. Tickets will be released incrementally, with another block of dates opening up in mid-September. Tours will be offered again in 2020. Tours last approximately 1 hour and 15 minutes, as participants aboard the 10-passenger pontoon boat ride south on the Lake Clarke portion of the river to the Safe Harbor Dam before circling up to Columbia and continuing back to Wrightsville. Nevin said that the tours fit well with the mission of SNHA to connect people with the Susquehanna River. Southern

MERCHANDISER - Donegal Edition -
His presentation at the expo will include thought-provoking lyrics, spiritual truths, humor, music, and visual illustrations. A successful singer, songwriter, recording artist, and author, he travels extensively with his wife, Anne, throughout America. While he will be appearing solo at the expo, he and his wife have performed at various Lancaster County locations in the past. As an avid outdoorsman, he notes that his primary interest is in being a hunter. His passion for engaging in what he calls “the fair chase” led to his writing many books for sportsmen and women. Along with his best-selling books involving hunting insights, he also penned a book for fathers called “10 Things I Want My Son to Know.” “Years ago, I discovered that not only can hunting yield nourishment for the body, (but) there is also food for the soul and spirit that can be gleaned in the field and woods,” he explained. “The lifechanging and character-building insights I’ve encountered while outdoors are the greater trophies that hang on the wall of my heart.” He shares these discoveries in his books and his live presentations. “Because of my obvious love of the
outdoors, I’ve been given many opportunities to speak and sing at events that are uniquely designed for those who also love the great outdoors,” Chapman said. “While at these gatherings, the most important message I offer to the folks is that not only can they enjoy going out into creation, (but) there is greater joy in allowing the Creator to come into us through His Son.” The expo is sponsored and coordinated by the EBIC men’s ministry team. Various local businesses and individuals also donate to this event, and their contributions are acknowledged at the expo. For more information or to sign up by Tuesday, Sept. 10, readers may visit www.etownbic.org/mensministry or call the church office on weekdays at 717-367-2651. EBIC is located next to the Elizabethtown Fairgrounds. Pictured on front: Steve
