The Milanof-Schock Library and Mount Joy Rotary Club are planning several events in September aimed at raising awareness of suicide and some of the suicide prevention resources available to the community. “We know there’s a need for this,” said Mount Joy Rotary Club co-president Mark Rorabaugh. “Our theme is ‘Inspiring Hope,’ and that’s what we’re trying to do - to remind people that there is help and you don’t have to be hopeless.” Rorabaugh and Rotary co-president Greg Sallade, along with four other Rotarians, completed a suicide prevention training event in March that went over ways to help people who may be struggling with depression and anxiety. “A lot of people need this type of help, and we want to help as many as we can,” noted Sallade. See Suicide Awareness pg 3
The Milanof-Schock Library and Mount Joy Rotary Club, represented by (from left) library executive director and Rotarian Barbara Basile and Rotarians David Christian, Mark Rorabaugh, and Greg Sallade, have planned a panel discussion and candlelight vigil on Sept. 11 and a Suicide Awareness and Prevention Walk on Sept. 14 at Rotary Park in Mount Joy. Pairs of empty shoes will be on display to signify those whose lives were lost to suicide in Lancaster County in 2018.
Donegal Faculty To Perform “Into The Woods”
Power Packs Project Will Serve Students The Donegal Power Packs Project will be distributing food packs to students in all Donegal School District schools. Students received a project enrollment request form the first week of school, but they may enroll at any time during the current school year. New, completed forms must be submitted each school year in order to participate. Online enrollment is available at www.tinyurl.com/DPPP201920Reg. This nonprofit, community-run project distributes food packs every Thursday during the school year. Each pack contains a recipe, the main ingredients for the recipe and an educational tip sheet. MERCHANDISER - Donegal Edition -
On Wednesday, Sept. 11, a panel discussion on suicide and a candlelight vigil are set to take place at the Milanof-Schock Library, 1184 Anderson Ferry Road, Mount Joy. Informational displays will be set up in the library for visitors beginning at 6 p.m. that day and will remain on display for the duration of September. At 6:30 p.m., representatives from Mental Health America (MHA) of Lancaster, Pathways Center for Grief and Loss, and Compeer will discuss the impact of suicide and how people can help others dealing with depression and anxiety, as well as how to become more aware of the signs of suicide and resources available. A question-and-answer session will follow the moderated forum. The candlelight vigil will begin at approximately 7:30 p.m. at the library’s flagpole. Registration for the discussion is requested and may be completed by calling 717-653-1510 or visiting https://mslibrary.org. On Saturday, Sept. 14, the public is invited to participate in a Suicide Awareness and Prevention Walk, rain or shine, at Rotary Park, 201 Fairview St., Mount Joy. Participants are welcome to bring strollers and dogs on leashes. Registration and displays will open at 8:30 a.m. The walk will begin at 9 a.m., with participants completing a loop just under 2 miles. Library executive director and Rotarian Barbara Basile explained that at the park, pairs of shoes will be on display to honor the lives of the all the individuals whose lives were lost to suicide in Lancaster County in 2018. Four stations with educational components will be set up along the walk for participants to pause, learn, and reflect. Participants will receive a ribbon to tie to an Empowerment Tree that will be in a wheelbarrow at the walk before being
moved to and planted at the library. Part of each ribbon will be tied to the tree, and Basile said that individuals may keep the other part to serve as a reminder of their commitment to help others. “The idea is that everybody can (commit to) reach out to someone,” said Basile, noting that she hopes events like this will help to lessen the stigma surrounding mental illness and suicide. Although most Donegal productions are directed by Audra Brackbill, she decided to step into the spotlight this year to portray Cinderella in “Into the Woods” by Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine. Under the direction of Chris Ondeck, who portrayed Chad in the Donegal staff production of “High School Musical” two years ago, the show will feature teachers and staff members from throughout the district portraying some of fairy tales’ most beloved characters. Jack, of Beanstalk fame, will be portrayed by Andrew Whitlock as he barters for beans for his mother, played by Joanne Marrs. Lauren Pogue will don the Red Hood, and Lindsey Elias will let down Rapunzel’s hair. Sleeping Beauty will be portrayed by Jess Shellenberger, and Cinderella’s Prince will never be the same after the comedic wit of Seth Dougherty. The show will be presented on Thursday, Sept. 5, and Saturday, Sept. 7, at 7 p.m. and on Sunday, Sept. 8, at 2 p.m. in the auditorium at Donegal High School, 1025 Koser Road, Mount Joy. Tickets may be purchased in advance from the box office at the school on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6 to 8 p.m. or prior to each performance. Separate ticket prices have been set for students and senior citizens and for adults.

Service Will Honor First Responders The Service of Thanksgiving and Remembrance will be held on Sunday, Sept. 8, at 9 a.m. in the Locust Street Park in Columbia. The purpose of the annual service is to recognize the community’s first responders and military veterans and to remember the victims of the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001. The speaker for this year’s service will be the Rev. Dr. James L. Banach, a Civil War reenactor chaplain. His message, given in his authentic uniform and presented as if he is speaking to an 1863 audience in Gettysburg, will highlight how today’s first responders echo the Army and civilian volunteer responders during and after the Battle of Gettysburg. This year, members of First St. John’s See First Responders pg 9

When Dave Felty, head of the musical theater program at Lancaster Bible College (LBC), realized that this fall would mark the 10th year since the music, worship, and performing arts division of the college began to produce musicals, he knew he had to plan a fall show that would honor the accomplishment. “This felt like a great time to celebrate a little bit of every show we have done,” shared Felty. “We won’t hit every show, but we will hit most of them.” To mark the milestone, Felty has planned “Tradition!” The dinner and concert format production will feature 18 students from the worship, music, and performing arts track. Shows will be held on Friday, Sept. 27, with dinner at 6 p.m. and a concert at 7:30 p.m. and Saturday, Sept. 28, with a meal at noon and concert at 1:30 p.m. A concert will also be held on Sept. 28 at 7:30 p.m. Those wishing to attend may purchase dinner and concert tickets for Friday evening or Saturday at noon or just concert tickets for each performance. The 90-minute show, which will be directed by Heather Grayberg, will feature a band on the stage and a cast dressed in elegant evening wear. Felty said that the 2008-09 school year

that he plans to do several songs from the show, along with a few from “Fiddler on the Roof,” from which the concert takes its name. Felty said he plans to draw from “The Sound of Music,” “Mary Poppins,” and “The Music Man,” among other shows that have been featured at the school. “This will be music that people will recognize for the most part,” he noted. When Felty joined the faculty at LBC, the musical theater program was really just getting started. “My first year was 2013-14,” recalled Felty. “We had three musical theater majors.” The small number did not keep Felty from staging “Seussical” at the school that winter. “Godspell” is a show that Felty said brought a lot of positive feedback to the school when it was performed. “‘Godspell’ was a huge success,” Felty noted, adding

The Elizabethtown Lions Club and Rheems Volunteer Fire Department (VFD) will host the 18th annual Cruise-In and Chicken Barbecue, presented by Moats’ Auto Repair, on Saturday, Sept. 7, at the Rheems VFD, 350 Anchor Road, Elizabethtown. Cars, trucks, motorcycles, emergency vehicles, tractors, boats, and equipment will be on display from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Admission and parking are free for spectators. Rock ‘N’ Roll Time Machine, a Manheimarea band specializing in oldies and classic rock, will be back for the second year in a row to perform live music. Vehicles of any size, age, or condition, either stock or modified, and even works in progress are welcome to enter. An awards ceremony is set to begin at 1:30 p.m. Awards will be presented based upon the participants’ choice and the club’s choice, and the favorites of several sponsoring businesses will also receive awards. Individuals who would like to enter a vehicle in the Cruise-In may visit www.etownpalions.org or call 717-3675449 or 717-333-9695 to register in advance. Dash plaques will be given to the first 150 entrants. Registered participants will be entered to win door prizes as well. Event-day registration and check-in will open at 8 a.m.
Chicken barbecue meals by Nolt’s Chicken Barbecue will be served from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. People are welcome to eat at the show or take advantage of a drive-through option. Separate prices have been set for meals and for half-chickens. Organizers encourage individuals to purchase tickets in advance from any Lions Club member or at the following Elizabethtown locations: Cocker’s Towing, 355 Hershey Road; Donnie G. Boyer and Company, 112 S. Market St.; Gruber Upholstery, 505 N. Market St., Suite C; Custom Auto Repairs and Sales, 2327 S. Market St.; and Sloan’s Norlanco Pharmacy, 428 Cloverleaf Road. Only a limited number of barbecue tickets will be available on the day of the event. Food and beverages will also be available to purchase at the event from local food vendors like Boothy’s BBQ, Udder Bliss Creamery, and Meat the Browns. Lions John Lerch and Glen Leib emphasized that, as always, the purpose of the show is to raise funds for the various causes that the Lions support in the Elizabethtown community. This year, the club has a new partnership with the Elizabethtown Area High School (EAHS) Mini-THON to raise funds for Four Diamonds, which covers medical expenses not paid for by insurance for pediatric cancer patients at Penn State Children’s Hospital. Aside from Four Diamonds, Lerch said that the Elizabethtown Lions’ primary chari-

Last year, Dave Diller (photo on front) won Best of Show with his Mustang. table focuses for this year are the Elizabethtown and Rheems fire departments, Community Cupboard of Elizabethtown, United Churches of Elizabethtown, Elizabethtown Community Housing and Outreach Services (ECHOS), scholarships for EAHS graduating seniors, and Elizabethtown Area School District. Lions Club members also offer support for people in need of vision services and dia-
betes prevention and control services, as Lerch noted that diabetes is one of the leading causes of blindness in the nation. At the show, club members will present donations to the Rheems VFD, Community Cupboard of Elizabethtown, and United Churches of Elizabethtown.
