Marietta Community House Invites The Public To Enjoy “An Evening In The Studio” By Chelsea Peifer
On Saturday, Sept. 21, the Marietta Community House will host “An Evening in the Studio,” which will showcase both of its historic buildings at 264 W. Market St., Marietta. This is an extra special year for the annual dinner and benefit auction, as the Marietta Community House is celebrating its 100th anniversary. “The auction is always a really fun night, and we’d love to have anyone and everyone show up,” said Katherine Leaman, Marietta Community House president. “We have regained the building that saw the birth of the Susquehanna Stage Company and are excited to showcase
both the studio and the house during the auction,” stated Leaman. Susquehanna Stage Company relocated to its new space at 133 W. Market St., Marietta, earlier in 2019. Leaman said that future possibilities for the space formerly occupied by the community theater group, which is now being called the studio, are currently being explored and discussed by board members. Historically, the space functioned as a gymnasium. “We are looking for something that will benefit the community as a whole and are open to all possibilities,” remarked Leaman. Cocktails and hors d’oeuvres will be served in the studio beginning at 5:30 p.m. Silent auction items will be See Marietta Community House pg 8

community-building event as the nonprofits that participate are able to share their stories and missions with shoppers, building both relationships and awareness. GTGH from pg 1 will direct them to the eight booths at the fair participating in the tour. A volunteer or business owner at each stand will provide food education or information about the business, as well as samples of small dishes such as samosas and Liberian rice bread. Children can participate in a scavenger hunt centered on the Declaration of Human Rights in honor of Human Rights Day, celebrated on Dec. 10. Participants who complete the hunt will be eligible to receive a book about human rights. Since it began in 2008, the fair has become a staple for many Lancaster-area residents as they shop for the holidays. Individuals will have the option of purchasing charitable gift donations to honor loved ones, and each of those gifts will include a greeting card and an explanatory insert about how the donation will sustain and provide for others. To help bring additional awareness to the issue of hunger, the CPFB has asked community leaders to be “celebrity volunteers” and help pack boxes, visit food distribution sites, and raise awareness throughout the month of September. These celebrity volunteers include public officials, corporate executives, nonprofit leaders, media personalities, and others. During Hunger Action Month, PSECU will match donations made through the CPFB’s virtual food drive up to a total of $15,000. This online initiative allows businesses and groups to raise funds to support the food bank’s work. On the platform, supporters can challenge friends and family with a virtual food drive on an interactive website that simulates how monetary donations efficiently purchase food for families, veterans, and seniors. Readers may learn more or make a donation at www.cen tralpafoodbank.org/psecu. In addition to virtual food
drive donation matching in September, PSECU will provide the CPFB with a $5,000 sponsorship, bringing its combined contribution to a potential $20,000. According to CPFB, each dollar donated to the food bank equates to six meals, so PSECU’s donation could provide up to 120,000 meals for those in need. Additionally, the credit union will continue promoting ways families can use effective budgeting to make healthy food choices, highlighting hunger issues on college campuses, and volunteering at the food bank. CPFB is one of 200 food bank members of Feeding America, which serves every county in the United States and provides more than three billion meals each year to Americans in need. To learn more about hunger and Hunger Action Month events, activities, and ways to get involved, readers may visit www.centralpafood bank.org/ham. September is Hunger Action Month, a nationwide initiative to raise awareness and encourage action to help end hunger. During the month, the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank (CPFB) is partnering with its Hunger Action Month presenting sponsor, PSECU, to host events, awards, and a virtual food drive initiative to highlight the issue of hunger in the area and to spur community action. Through the collaboration, now in its third consecutive year, PSECU will contribute up to $20,000 to the cause and encourage its members living in CPFB’s 27-county region to donate. In conjunction with Hunger Action Month, the CPFB will host its annual Hunger Heroes Awards at the annual Hunger Action Day breakfasts in the food bank’s healthy food hubs in Harrisburg on Thursday, Sept. 12, and Williamsport on Tuesday, Sept. 17. Members of the community are invited to register to attend the free events at www.centralpafoodbank.org/ham.

play in motion. Dropping back into coverage in the Donegal end zone as McCleary sailed a pass to Darnell Tucker, Fox made a break on the ball, tipping it away with zeros on the clock and ending Columbia’s comeback bid. “Joe Fox is one of our team leaders,” said head coach Chad Risberg. “He is a team captain and made some huge plays for us defensively. He had two interceptions that stopped their drives and obviously made the biggest play at the end of the game by knocking the pass down in the end zone.” Despite giving up 442 yards to the Tide, 339 of which came through the air, Donegal was able to hold them in check enough to allow Ober, who rushed for 126 yards on 14 carries
who had 124 yards and two scores on 20 carries, to inflict their damage. Fox added another 55 yards and a touchdown and quarterback Trent Weaver scampered for 25 as the Indian ground game pummeled the Tide for 330 yards. “We wanted to control the clock with our running game. Anytime we can run the ball and get first downs, we have control and our kids did a great job with that on Friday night,” added Risberg. Falling behind early when Demetrius Diaz scored on Columbia’s first possession of the game, Donegal scored with 3:09 left in the opening quarter on a Blake touchdown from 11-yards out after Fox claimed his first pick of the game at the Tide 35-yard

however, and Columbia still led 7-6. Donegal’s defense then held McCLeary and company to a turnover on downs and the offense went on a seven play, 77-yard drive which culminated in Blake scoring his second touchdown of the night as well as a successful two-point conversion, putting Donegal in the lead 14-7. The Tide rolled on in its next possession with Diaz slashing the Indians for a 45-yard scoring hookup from McCleary with 5:27 remaining in the second quarter, but Joel Grillo’s leaping block of the PAT preserved their lead at 14-13 which held up through the end of the half. In the third quarter, which was consumed by only two drives,
methodically drove 63 yards to the Donegal 16 before stalling and turning the ball over on downs. The Indians then pounded the Tide for 84 yards on 15 plays, all on the ground, before Fox scored from five yards out to put them up 21-13 with 14 seconds left in the quarter. “That was a huge momentum swing in the game. Our kids did a great job responding to adversity and finishing the game,” said Risberg when asked about how that affected the flow of the game. Ryan Redding’s 33-yard touchdown reception in the fourth followed by a successful two-point play tied the game with 7:16 remaining, but Ober followed up a 45-yard scamper with a

Donegal (2-0, 2-1) hosted backyard rival Columbia (0-2, 1-2) on Friday night in a contest that showcased the Tide’s passing attack while the Indians employed a grinding run game in a back-and-forth affair which resulted in a tense, 28-21 victory for the Indians. With both teams combining for over 800 yards of offense, it was a single defensive play by Donegal’s Joe Fox that sealed the victory. Columbia quarterback Joe McCleary led the Tide on a 46-yard drive following Mason Ober’s scoring plunge from the Columbia one-yard line which broke a 21-21 tie with 1:24 left in the game. five-play drive on the next possession to give the Indians the lead for good. FIELD HOCKEY In a defensive first half on the road versus Manheim Central last Thursday, Donegal fell behind 1-0 but could not hold the host Barons in check during the second as they fell 4-1, losing to their neighboring rivals for the first time in three years. Morgan Saunders represented Donegal’s lone goal in the contest when she made good on a penalty stroke 7:53 into the second half to pull the Indians within one at 2-1, but it was not meant to be as Manheim scored two unanswered goals to finish out. Donegal had its chances early, but Manheim goalie Mikayla Regan weathered an early onslaught giving her offense the opportunity to score midway through the first half. Christine Emswiler limited the damage for the Indians, stopping five shots in the cage, but the offense was stifled as they only managed five shots of their own including nine penalty corner attempts. In a non-league matchup with visiting Lake Lehman on Saturday the Indians fell to 0-2 as they were unable to puzzle out the Knight’s defense in a 3-0 defeat. Unable to capitalize on a nine to six advantage in corners, Donegal trailed 2-0 at halftime and surrendered one more goal in the second while Emswiler turned away 15 shots on goal. CROSS COUNTRY Both the boys’ and girls’ teams got off to a good start to the 2019 season going 2-0 in the opening tri-meet held at Lancaster Catholic last Tuesday. The ladies posted a 15-55 win over Cocalico and a 17-47 victory over the Crusaders while the boys downed the Eagles 16-46 and
MERCHANDISER - Donegal Edition Catholic 25-30. Donegal’s girls placed eight runners in the top ten overall with Myra Naqvi (21:41), Hadley Shoaf (21:53), Rachel Fernald (22:03), and Amanda Fry (22:34) taking the first four spots. Emma Myers (23:42), Marleigh Ballard (23:49), Meg Zell (24:12), and Ella DeBruin (24:27) rounded out the bottom half of the group. Finishing out the rest of the field were Keri Anderson (12th, 25:11), Megan Myers (17th, 26:17), Naomi Myers (22nd, 28:23), Sarah Hinkel (23rd, 29:16), and Morgan Ferree (27th, 31:36). On the boy’s side Hunter Gehman placed second overall with an 18:53 just ahead of teammate Sam Rothstein who was third in 18:55 while Brock Overlander (5th, 19:01) and Logan Fry (6th, 19:07) along with Ethan Steck (10th, 20:00) helped pull off the close victory over
the Crusaders. Brandon Marcello (15th, 20:38), Andrew Allen (20th, 21:46), Aydan Miller (23rd, 22:32), and Henry Warburton (27th, 23:42) rounded out the field for the Indians. TENNIS The girls’ tennis team took a split last week as they lost on the road last Tuesday to Manheim Central 4-3 and then blanked Garden Spot 7-0 at home on Thursday. Manheim’s Maddie Moyer pulled off a tense victory over Emma Shelly in number three singles in what was a deciding factor in the Baron’s win. Shelley battled back from a 6-4 loss in the first set with a 7-5 win in the second but then fell just short in the 10-8 tie break. Emily Ashley’s 6-3, 6-3, win over Eliana Shenk at number one and Ellen Zern’s 6-3, 6-2 victory at number four over Cassie Ginder along with Kailey Frownfelter and Emma Pisco

defeating Kami Groff and Abbi Martin 8-5 in number four doubles accounted for Donegal’s score on the day. The ladies met little resistance versus Garden Spot as the Spartans won only 12 games overall. Ashley teamed with Zern for an 8-0 win over Jenna Muttik and Kendall Halsey, Hailey Fry and Shelly defeated Patti Unruh and Erika Chernovsky 8-2, while Pisco and Frownfelter dispatched Arwyn Robbins and Cassidy Yaranella 8-4 in doubles. In singles Ashley won 6-1, 6-0 over Muttik, Fry defeated Halsey 6-3, 6-1, Shelly won 6-0, 6-0 over Unruh, and Zern beat Chernovsky 6-0, 6-1. SOCCER In boys’ play last week the Indians ran the gamut as they racked up a 2-0 loss to Dallastown last Tuesday, tied 1-1 with Garden Spot on Thursday and downed South Western 1-0 on Saturday. That placed Donegal (2-2-1) atop the standings in Section Three at week’s end. Dallastown scored once in the first half and again in the second while denying all five of Donegal’s shots on the day. The Indians enjoyed a 5-1 advantage in corners but could not
make any count while Owen Ollar had three saves and Keeghan Cote stopped two while splitting duties in the net. On Thursday both Donegal and Garden Spot tallied first half goals but knuckled down on defense for the rest of the contest. The Indians held a distinct edge in shots on goal at 12 to the Spartan’s five as well as a 9-1 advantage in corners. Levi Sites first put the Indians on the board at 20:00 on an assist by Austin Heim before Christopher When tied things up in the 23rd minute off an assist by Jethro Hahn. Cote made four saves for Donegal and Mark Dariychuk turned away 11 for the Spartans. On Saturday Michael Linebarger, with an assist by Philip Herzog, put the Indians up 1-0 in the fifth minute of play for the only goal of the day and the only one they would need to put away South Western. Cote pitched the shut out, stopping all four of the Mustang’s shots. For the girls it was a split as they first lost to Dallastown 2-0 last Tuesday and then won 3-0 over Garden Spot on Wednesday. and again in the 36th for the only scores of the day while Rena Rankin turned away 11 of 16 shots on goal in the net for Donegal in the losing effort. On Thursday it was the Indians jumping out to an early lead when Hannah Dunn found the back of the net in the 13th minute followed about
a minute later by Sophia Floyd for the 2-0 advantage. Hayley Bauer joined the club in the 21st minute for the final score of the day for the Indians. Dunn assisted on two while Floyd had one and Rankin made five saves with only one blemish late in the second half when Allison Usner scored for the Spartans in the 74th minute.

has gone uninsured.” Residents of Lancaster, Lebanon, and Dauphin counties who are medically uninsured and fall under 250% of the federal poverty level are eligible for treatment at Hope Within. According to McAlester, Hope Within has approximately 350 active patients and has seen 64 new patients so far in 2019. Eight medical providers volunteer their services at Hope Within, and McAlester added that more volunteers are always welcome. Hope Within also partners with the central Pennsylvania ministry “She’s Somebody’s Daughter” to treat individuals who have been ensnared in trafficking or by other brands of the sex trade. “These girls are fragile, and they are treated with respect and with dignity, quite possibly for the first time ever,” McAlester said. An approximately 1,900-square-foot addition to Hope Within’s primary care center was completed this summer to house its new lost-cost counseling wing. Counseling services were previously offered out of only one room, but McAlester explained that the expansion includes three counseling rooms. Counseling services are available to anyone on an income-based sliding scale fee. The room formerly used for counseling services will soon be converted into a dental suite, so that Hope Within can begin implementing a donation-based dental clinic in 2020. McAlester said that plans are also underway for a greater dental expansion later that year, with Hope Within aiming to begin providing dental services in space at Community Place on Washington, 61 E. Washington St., Elizabethtown, by the end of 2020. “That’s still a long way off for patients to wait. We’ve had lots of calls (requesting dental care) already, so we want to provide something in the interim,” McAlester remarked. Dentists who will volunteer their services are needed. Proceeds from the annual Golf for Hope tournament will go toward furnishing the new dental clinic. The community is invited to take part in the Golf for Hope tournament on Friday, Sept. 27, at Sunset Golf Course, 2601 Sunset Drive, Middletown. The tournament will feature a fourperson scramble format. Registration will open at 11:30 a.m., and play will commence at 12:30 p.m. with a shotgun start. Participation is limited to the first 120 golfers. To register in advance as a single player or as a group of four, interested individuals may visit https://tinyurl .com/hwgolf2019. Prizes will be awarded to the first- and second-place teams, plus individual prizes will be given for hole-in-one, longest putt, longest drive for male and female,
