Historical society plans chicken and waffle dinner

The Maytown Historical Society will serve up comfort food at a fundraiser later this month.

A chicken and waffle dinner will be held at the society’s museum, 4 W. High St., Maytown, on Saturday, Sept. 30, from noon to 5 p.m. The meal will be available for takeout or to enjoy outside in the yard behind the museum.

In addition to homemade chicken and waffles, the dinner will include green beans, coleslaw, desserts, coffee and water.

This is the first time the historical society has held a chicken and waffle dinner, said Linda Good, vice president of the society, but the group members were inspired by a breakfast they organized earlier this year.

“That was very well received, and everything worked well with the breakfast, so we thought we’d try another meal,” Good explained. “We have some really great cooks who are part of the historical society, and Janie Garber is our head cook for this. She makes delicious chicken and waffles.”

Proceeds from the meal will help the society with ongoing projects,

including raising funds to expand. The group is looking to either build onto its existing site or move to a larger space in Maytown.

“We have so many wonderful things we’d like to display, but we just don’t have the room to display them,” Good explained. “We want to be able to show off what we have.”

historical society.

“We are a group of people who are concerned about preserving our history,” she said. “We want to promote and save all the history that’s happened in Maytown.”

The Maytown Historical Society’s biggest fundraiser of the year is Mayfest, a daylong celebration held in May. Good noted that organizers are already planning next year’s Mayfest, which she promises will be bigger and better than ever.

The chicken and waffle meal also serves another purpose, she noted. “It’s a way for us to share what we do with the community and maybe get some young people involved,” she said. “We want to become a more active group and reach out to more people in the community.”

Good shared that a group of volunteers works weekly on digitizing, recording and storing artifacts and documents that come into the museum. She encourages anyone with an interest in Maytown’s history to consider joining the

The historical society also holds public programs throughout the year. The next program will be held on Thursday, Oct. 19, at 6:30 p.m. at the East Donegal Township building, 190 Rock Point Road, Marietta. The organization will host a Christmas Gala at 6 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 14. The location of the gala is to be determined.

Tickets for the chicken and waffle dinner may be purchased by calling Janie Garber at 717-940-0037. Advance tickets will be sold for a discount until Saturday, Sept. 23. Tickets will also be available at the door. There is no charge for children under age 5.

When youths are riding bikes as part of Lifecycles, they are doing much more than getting some exercise.

As Lifecycles founder Lee DeRemer explained, neurological research has emerged in the past few years showing that when you challenge yourself to do hard things and you complete them, you can actually change the way your brain works.

“It’s about a creating a set of habits that says, ‘I can do this,’ instead of, ‘I think that’s too hard,’” Lee shared.

Forty-three teens experienced what it’s like to “do hard things,” the motto of Lifecycles, when they participated in Challenge Rides this summer. One team rode 320 miles from the Pittsburgh area to Washington, D.C., while another team rode 535 miles from Portland, Maine, to Valley Forge. Three other See Biking pg 5

broaden horizons

What a mundane existence it would be if everything were the same. Not only is variety the spice of life, but also diversity makes the world go round.

In association with Lancaster Bible College, the Trust Performing Arts Center’s ninth Arts & Culture Series is marked by diversity and variety and uniqueness.

The Trust Performing Arts Center recently unveiled its 2023-24 events for the spirited Arts & Culture

Series. The 14 performances are a collection of instrumental music, singing, stage shows and art spread out over a nine-month season that coincides with Lancaster Bible College’s school year.

Ariella Hoover, the interim director of the Trust Performing Arts Center’s Art and Culture Series, said she’s eager to attend the performances. “Besides the variety, I’m a sucker for the vocal arts,” she said. “That’s why I tend towards the a capella. There’s so much collaboration involved, a lot of technique involved. I think Lancaster See Arts & Culture pg 2

is in for a treat when it comes to the vocal arts this year.”

The Arts & Culture Series will launch on Friday, Sept. 15, from 6 to 9 p.m., with artwork and a free concert by the recently founded Lancaster Art Song Society at the Trust Performing Arts Center, 37 N. Market St., Lancaster. The series will conclude with a Lancaster International Piano Festival concert presented by the Elaris Duo with Xun Pan

on May 4 at the Trust Performing Arts Center.

“I’m excited about the diversity, just the diversity in the types of events we have this season,” said Hoover. “It’s just got a nice flow. Some of the shows are stops on world tours; some are stops on United States tours. It’s on par with a lot of what other performing art centers do. I think audiences should expect to be wowed, especially if they come to an event they don’t usually buy a ticket for.”

They should provide their name, address, and phone number, along with the location of the tree and a photo. A jury of city staff members and LEADS board members will

select the tree. The tree selected will be cut down by the city, then transported and mounted in Penn Square shortly before Thanksgiving. The donor will be recognized for his or her contribution in a press release and during the program at the mayor’s tree lighting. After the holidays are over, the tree will be transformed into mulch for city parks.

The tree will be the centerpiece of the mayor’s tree lighting on Friday, Nov. 24. For more information about the event, visit http://visit lancastercity.com/city -events/lancaster-city-for -the-holidays.

Aysha Gibbs of Mount Joy was one of nine softball players at Kutztown University of Pennsylvania to achieve All-America Scholar-Athlete status from the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) for the 2022-23 academic year. Additionally, the team as a whole earned an NFCA Team Academic Award.

Gibbs is an alumna of Donegal High School.

In order to be named an Easton/NFCA All-America Scholar-Athlete honoree, student-athletes must achieve a GPA of 3.5 or greater for the 2022-23 academic year. Across Division II, Kutztown was one of 99 programs honored by the NFCA with the Team Aca-

demic Award, showcasing a team GPA of 3.29. The nine individual Kutztown players recognized were among 1,790 Division II student-athletes honored.

Kutztown finished last season with its fourth straight 30-win season and earned its third consecutive trip to the NCAA Division II Atlantic Regional Tournament.

“They all did very well on the rides,” Lee said. “They dealt with fatigue, rain and heat, but they pushed through, and they all came back very proud of themselves.”

Lifecycles began in 2015, when Lee and his wife, Marcie, created the program to provide friendship, mentoring and bike riding, all with a faith focus. The organization is open to boys and girls ages 12 to 18, and all equipment and programming is provided free of charge.

“There are no tryouts,” Lee commented. “Anyone who wants to join can join.” Participants do not need to be

experienced bike riders, he noted, adding that youths are placed in a group based on their skill level.

Lifecycles has a mission of building young men and women of character. “We do it through long-distance cycling,” Lee remarked. “We invest in the kids, and we provide a faith-based curriculum, one for the girls and one for the boys. The program is all about outdoor adventure and building self-confidence.”

He noted that the lessons learned in Lifecycles can be applied to school, work and life outside of biking. “You build a habit pattern that has a bit of a courage and a confidence aspect to it, instead of setting your goals so low because you’re afraid of failure,” he explained. “This is a positive and encouraging

Event to celebrate recovery from addiction

Recovery Day Lancaster, an annual family-friendly festival that celebrates recovery from addiction, will mark its 10th year on Saturday, Sept. 23, at Buchanan Park, Race and Buchanan avenues, Lancaster. Recovery Day is Lancaster’s contribution to National Recovery Month and will include a variety of activities.

The event will begin with a 10 a.m. opening ceremony with city and county officials and the traditional unity circle, followed by the 5K Run for Recovery. The run will start at the Buchanan Park side of the Franklin & Marshall College campus. The Walk for Recovery, with a shorter route, will begin at the same time.

Entertainment will be provided by The Mystic Alpacas, a horn-based band playing popular blues, melodic jazz, originals and old-school rhythm and

blues, and the Quiet Tiger Band, an acoustic duo offering soulful renditions of classic songs, original music and contemporary modern artists.

Visitors may stroll the park until 2 p.m. to explore information and exhibit tables staffed by local addiction treatment professionals and recovery advocates to learn about local and regional resources for addiction recovery, including support groups, treatment options, family supports and holistic health and wellness modalities. The exhibit area will also feature crafting, selfie booths, magic and other interactive activities. Recovery Day will also include games and speakers.

Tickets may be purchased for an all-you-can-eat barbecue lunch prepared by Harvey’s Main Street BBQ of Mount Joy with all the fixings. To reserve

lunch tickets, visit www.lancast ercountyrecovery.com.

Participants are welcome to bring a picnic lunch if they wish, as well as blankets, chairs and lawn games. Well-behaved dogs are also welcome.

The Lancaster County Recovery Alliance (LCRA) organizes the event in collaboration with the 521 Club, a sober club in Lancaster, and local and regional health resources and treatment centers.

The festival originated in 2013, when the director of Lancaster County’s Drug and Alcohol Commission was approached by the Lancaster Barnstormers to find a way for the county to celebrate recovery and promote community education. A group of recovery advocates and addiction treatment professionals organized a recovery countdown during the seventh inning stretch at a

Lancaster Printers Fair slated

The annual Lancaster Printers Fair will be held at the Ken Kulakowsky Center for Letterpress and Book Arts, 117 Parkside Ave., Lancaster, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 16. The event, sponsored by the .918 Club, the group of letterpress printers that operates the Heritage

Press Museum at BUiLDiNG CHARACTER in downtown Lancaster, will be held in conjunction with an open house at make717, the Lancaster maker group whose space is located at 1151 Clark St., Lancaster. The printing portion will feature demonstrations and vendors of equipment,

supplies and letterpressprinted goods. Vendors are scheduled to come from Pennsylvania, New York, Massachusetts, Virginia and Maryland.

Admission is free, and free parking is available nearby. For more information, visit www.lancasterprintersfair.org.

Barnstormers’ baseball game in Lancaster. A few local people in recovery were honored on the field, and families and friends gathered in the food tent near the right field for a barbecue. In the following years, Recovery Day grew to include more activities and became a stand-alone event rather than occurring in connection with a baseball game.

Through awareness, advocacy and access, LCRA seeks to encourage recovery within the community for those affected by addiction. LCRA also aims to eliminate the stigma of addiction so that local neighborhoods will become more welcoming to individuals and families working to sustain recovery.

To sign up to run the 5K or to learn more about Recovery Day and its sponsors, visit the aforementioned website.

Group backpacks at Pennsylvania Grand Canyon

Glossbrenner United Methodist Church (UMC), 713 Church St., Mount Joy, recently offered an outdoor excursion opportunity to church members and others. From July 12 to 14, the six participants completed an approximately 17-mile backpacking journey in the Tiadaghton State Forest in Lycoming County. They trekked the Black Forest Trail in Pine Creek Gorge - also known as the Grand Canyon of Pennsylvania - located near the town of Slate Run. Their path included vistas and scenic waterfalls. The final night, July 14, the crew had dinner and stayed at the Black Forest Inn.

The trip was led by Glossbrenner member David F. Eichler. He recently retired

from a 35-year career as a Donegal High school physical and outdoor education teacher, and he has also been a North Carolina Outward Bound school instructor. Eichler holds a doctorate in adult education from Penn State University.

The other participants were Pat and Steve Spence from Glossbrenner, Eric Boyer, Alex Boyer, and Andrew Miller.

The trip became possible after the Donegal School District School Board decided to transfer unused outdoor adventure equipment and gear to Glossbrenner UMC. Additionally, a church parishioner made a donation that allowed for the purchase of additional equipment.

The trip began on July 12 with a 6 a.m. departure from

the church and a four-hour drive to the start of the course. The crew members were then supplied with backpacks, food, sleeping bags and rain and other camping gear, including sleeping pads, plastic ground sheets, water bottles, bowls, spoons, and orienteering compasses. Group camping items included camp stoves, fuel bottles, pots, tarps, a topographic map and equipment for carrying and filtering water.

The crew was instructed in the use and care of the equipment. The training came in handy during rain showers on the first evening and high wind with thunderstorms and heavy rain during the second night; because the tarps were erected soundly, no sleeping bags were dampened. The

Daily devotions utilized the “Upper Room” booklet, and the corresponding Bible verses were followed by a prayer. Topics of discussion included praising and trusting God during times of struggle, as well as how the most ordinary tasks or acts of service can bring glory to God. Various acts of services occurred during the trip. Examples include giving a hand to a crewmate struggling on the trail, redistributing gear in backpacks to balance weight and ability, purifying water for others’ water

bottles, assisting with the tying of knots and hitches for tarp construction, and preparing or cooking a meal for the group.

During their journey, participants learned about the specifics of backpacking, like how to pack a backpack, prepare a meal on a camp stove without overcooking or undercooking the food, purify water correctly, practice Leave No Trace principles, set up a shelter, stay hydrated and utilize rest breaks. They also honed skills such as compassion and humanity.

“Rhapsody in Blue” concert planned

The Lancaster Symphony Orchestra (LSO), led by music director Michael Butterman, will kick off its 77th season with a program featuring George Gershwin’s “Rhapsody in Blue” on Friday, Sept. 15, at 7:30 p.m. and Saturday, Sept. 16, at 2:30 and 7:30 p.m. A free pre-concert lecture will begin 45 minutes before each performance. The concerts will be held at the LSO’s new home, the Gardner Theatre within Lancaster Country Day School, 725 Hamilton Road, Lancaster.

The concert’s theme centers around rhythm in music and showcases how composers can combine different genres to expand the world of classical music. The LSO will welcome Cuban pianist and composer Aldo López-Gavilán, who will

also perform his original composition “Emporium,” which blends classical and jazz sounds. The program will also include music by Jessie Montgomery and Alberto Ginastera, both of whom find ways to inject new rhythms and culture into their music.

To further celebrate its inaugural season in a new home, the LSO invites all audience members to gather in the theater’s grand lobby after each performance for drinks, refreshments, silent auctions, and a chance to meet Butterman, López-Gavilán, and the musicians of the LSO.

Free parking is available onsite. Tickets range in price and can be purchased by calling the LSO box office at 717-2916440 or visiting www.lancaster symphony.org/rhapsody-in-blue.
