Some people may think of Community Bible Church (CBC), 331 Anderson Ferry Road, Marietta, as “that big church up on the hill,” but senior pastor Jeff Burkholder would like that to change. The mission of CBC is to love God, love others, and reach out. One way that CBC actively reaches out is through its Community Care Center, located at 54 W. Market St., Marietta, which houses a clothing bank for local residents. “The clothing bank has been in existence for many, many years, but we want to see (the Community Care Center) develop into more than just that,” explained Burkholder.

CBC outreach coordinator Dave Poteat suggested hosting a block party outside the center this fall as a fun way to interact with those living in the vicinity of the center. “The purpose of the block party is twofold: One, we want to legitimately throw a fun party for the people of Marietta,” Burkholder shared. “But at the same time, we want to show people around (the Community Care Center) and have discussions on how we can use the center to meet their needs.” Everyone is invited to attend the block party, set to take place from 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 6, in the first block of West Market Street, from the S-bend to the square. The two-day festival began as a way to celebrate the heritage of the area, and it remains a community event to its core. Churches and civic organizations such as the Bainbridge Fire Company, Bainbridge Lions Club, and Elizabethtown Jaycees prepare and serve a variety of food and beverages for attendees to purchase. Local Boy Scouts assist with parking, trash, and crowd management. For more details, readers may find “Susquehanna Old-Fashioned Field Days” on Facebook or call 717-572-6144.

The Susquehanna Waldorf School (SWS), an independent school in Marietta serving students in kindergarten through eighth grade, will celebrate Waldorf education’s 100th anniversary on Thursday, Sept. 19. Waldorf education founder Rudolf Steiner formed the first Waldorf School in Stuttgart, Germany, in 1919. Today there are more than 1,100 Waldorf schools and almost 2,000 Waldorf kindergartens in 80 countries around the globe. In celebration of Waldorf education’s centennial, Susquehanna Waldorf School joins other schools worldwide engaging in social and environmental impact projects. The higher aim is to regionally and internationally create an interconnectedness that SWS sees as essential in today’s world. Two of the projects that SWS has participated in over the past year are the Worldwide Postcard Exchange and the Greenbee Wildlife Web. SWS students joined Waldorf students from around the world in a global postcard exchange initiative to both broaden the perspective of students and to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Waldorf education. Students in every Waldorf school around the world are sending a postcard to every other Waldorf school. Each postcard is individually designed by a young person,

telling or showing something of his or her country, school, or self. All the postcards received at SWS are rotated through a world map display, showing where each card originated. As part of the Waldorf’s ongoing mission to create a more sustainable future, schools across the globe are taking action to support pollinators such as honey bees, butterflies, and moths as part of the Greenbee Wildlife Web. At SWS, students, parents, and faculty members came together to plant several pollinator plants and shrubs around the campus over the summer. According to SWS representative Michelle Wann, SWS third- and fifth-graders will tend the plants as part of their curricula. The school says this project supports Waldorf’s mission to protect and preserve the honeybee and all pollinators, create a more sustainable future for the planet’s ecology, and teach children to be good stewards of the Earth. All the campaigns aim to stimulate dialogue around human values in education and support initiatives that revitalize society and people’s relationships with each other and the Earth. To view a video about Waldorf education and the centennial celebration, readers may visit www.susque hannawaldorf.org/what-is -waldorf-education/ and scroll to the bottom of the page.

home to the famous Susanna Wright. Educated in England, Susanna helped to pioneer the once-thriving silk industry in Columbia and corresponded with intellectuals like Benjamin Franklin throughout her lifetime. The guided exterior walking tours will be led by architectural designers and are set to begin at 10 a.m. and depart every halfhour through 3 p.m. on Sept. 28. Participants must check in for the tour at the Columbia Market House, 15 S. Third St., Columbia, to receive wristbands and a tour booklet. Check-in will begin at 9:30 a.m. Although 25 properties are included in the tour, not all of those will be part of the guided portion of the tour. Tourgoers will each receive a 75-page booklet including historical background and anecdotes for each of the sites, and they may explore the other properties on their own during tour hours. A trolley will be running on a loop throughout town as another mode of transportation for participants to reach all of the sites. To purchase tickets for the Columbia Architectural Tour in advance, people may visit https://hptrust.org. Tickets may also be available on the day of the tour while supplies last. Admission to the Turkey Hill Experience, Wright’s Ferry Mansion, and the National Watch and Clock Museum is included with each tour ticket. Separate ticket prices have been set for HPT members and for nonmembers, as well as for children. The tour is family-friendly, and a treasure hunt for children will be offered. Individuals with questions may email manager@hptrust.org or call 717-291-5861. A complete list of properties on the tour is available at https://hptrust.org.

If You Want It Done Right The First Time By Someone You Can Trust Call (717) 426-0019 General and Custom Contractor

The HPT was established in the 1960s in response to the urban renewal happening in Lancaster, and Barley said that since then a walking tour of a borough or town in Lancaster County has been offered to the public approximately every two years. The mission of HPT, then and now, is to encourage and facilitate historic preservation throughout the county. “At the Trust, we educate, we collaborate, and we celebrate, and the tour hits all three of those,” explained Barley. “You’ve got to continually be educating because it’s so easily forgotten.” “The tour is about Lancaster County as a whole,” said Barley, noting that past tours have highlighted preservation in areas such as Marietta, Ephrata, Strasburg, and Bowmansville. “Having Columbia for this year’s tour seems to parallel the exciting things that are happening there.” Columbia is known to some as the jewel of the Susquehanna and still others as the Brooklyn of Lancaster, but organizers have promoted the Columbia Architectural Tour as a chance for people to see why some are calling Columbia “the Paris of Pennsylvania.” Barley, who resides in Columbia, admits that the phrase began somewhat in jest, but the more he considered it, the more it stuck. “The way that Columbia is laid out makes it very walkable, and it has a lot of green spaces and parks,” said Barley. Barley said that the ColumbiaWrightsville bridge, which is one of the stops on the tour, is perhaps the most architecturally interesting structure in the county. Construction on the bridge began in 1929 and was completed in 1930. The oldest building on the tour is Wright’s Ferry Mansion, built in 1738 and

The seventh Lancaster Printers Fair will take place on Friday and Saturday, Sept. 20 and 21, in downtown Lancaster. The event started in 2013 as a nod to Lancaster’s place in printing history and features vendors and suppliers of letterpress equipment, foundry type, cards, posters, broadsides, ephemera, and more. To kick off the two-day event, members of the the .918 Club, which is organizing the fair, will show “Pressing On,” a film about the craft of letterpress printing, on Sept. 20 from 6 to 8:30 p.m. at The Candy Factory, located near the club’s Heritage Press Museum, 346 N. Queen St., Lancaster. There is no cost. The museum also will be open that evening with demonstrations and hands-on activities. For the second year, three exhibits will be on display that night. Prints by Rebecca Blossler will be exhibited at the Pennsylvania Guild of Craftsmen, 335 N. Queen St., through October, and the guild will remain open until 9 p.m. on Sept. 20. Paper pulp sculptures by Angela Heaps will be in the windows at Madcap & Co., 310 N. Queen St., through Monday, Sept. 23. Prints by Martin Mazorra at Realm and Reason, 213 W. King St., will be on display until Monday, Sept. 30; the venue will be open until 10 p.m. on Sept. 20 and will host an after-party reception. On Sept. 21, the street fair will be held from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on the closed-to-traffic 300 block of North Queen Street, where all nearby merchants will remain open for business. The street will be filled with vendors from across the region selling printing supplies and handmade products, and there will be printing demonstrations and food vendors. Activities for children will also be available. As a part of the street fair, the public can learn about H.N. Werkman, a printer from the Dutch province of Groningen during World War II, from noon to 3 p.m. Attendees can also try their hand at creating and printing a keepsake postcard. A salonstyle group show of Lancaster printers will take place during the street fair, as well, and the exhibition will include work by Stephanie Hinish, Arthur Padelsky, Ben Williamson, Victoria Duggan, Brianna Maule, Gabby Shelly, Paula Mann, and Henry Gepfer. Returning this year will be a beer and burger garden presented by Voodoo Brewery and Cabalar Meat Co. A percentage of the sales will go to the .918 Club’s mission at the Heritage Press Education Center on the campus of Thaddeus Stevens College of Technology. Two Wins Move Donegal Tennis into Second Place by Vaughn Brown

Picking up two important league wins, the Donegal girls’ tennis team landed in second place in Section Two with a 6-1 victory over Cocalico and a 7-0 win over Lebanon. Against the Eagles, the only game lost came in number two doubles when Hailey Fry and Emma Shelly were barely edged out by Sybi Gerhart and Kira Lapi by a score of 8-6. Emily Ashley and Ellen Zern opened with an 8-0 victory over Megan Rodriguiz and Allie Dickson while Nupoor Patel and Kailey Frownfelter put away Abby Horning and Bethany Elmore 8-6. The Indians then swept singles play with Ashley defeating Rodriguiz 6-0, 6-0, Fry putting away Dickson 6-3, 6-0, Shelly picking up a 6-1, 6-4 win over Leah Mathews and Zern

winning 6-4, 6-3 against Elmore. Versus the Cedars on Wednesday, Donegal conceded only six games total on the way to the shutout win at home with Ashley and Zern winning 8-2 over Ashley Garcia and Jonessa Gonzalez at number one followed by Fry and Shelly defeating Neveah Garcia and Ashlyn Bare and Patel and Frownfelter putting away Cat Cruz and Isabella Tice with identical 8-0 scores. Ashley, playing at number one, and Zern at four, scored 6-0, 6-0 victories over Garcia and Bare, respectively, while Shelly won 6-1, 6-3 over Nevaeh Garcia and Fry took a 3-0 win over Gonzalez after she retired from play. SOCCER Looking to maintain position in Section Three boys’ soccer, Donegal

(1-1, 1-3-1) picked up a crucial 2-0 win over ELCO (0-2, 1-7) to remain in third place but also suffered two losses in last week’s action. The Indians, who trailed both Cocalico (2-0, 4-1-1) and Octorara (2-0, 4-2-0) after Saturday’s action, dropped a 4-0 game to Lancaster Mennonite (1-1-0), 1-3-1) and then lost to Red Land 5-2 in non-league play. The Blazers visited Mount Joy last Tuesday and used a balanced scoring attack, netting two goals in each half. Owen Ollar, who made one save in goal, and Keaghan Cote split goal keeping duties for Donegal with Cote stopping two. While Donegal had six corner opportunities to Lancaster Mennonite’s none, the Blazers outshot the home team 7-3 with Dominic France pitching the shutout

for the visitors. Friday’s matchup with the Raiders proved more fruitful for the Indians as they evened out their offensive efforts with a goal in both halves to earn the win. Scoring twice on nine tries, Donegal out cornered ELCO 9-1 with Ollar denying both shots he faced. Levi Sites, working off an assist by Philip Herzog, found the back of the net in the fifth minute of play for the 1-0 lead that stood until halftime. Herzog then added the insurance goal in the 54th minute on a solo shot that beat Chandler Erhart and gave the Indians the win. Donegal traveled to Red Land on Saturday morning for a non-league matchup in which the Indians erased an early, two-goal deficit but then saw the Patriots score three times in 15 minutes in the second half.

Ollar and Cote again shared time in goal with each recording one save, but Red Land was able to put up two first half goals courtesy of Dom Apa in the 10th minute and then again in the 15th for the 2-0 lead at the break. Donegal answered in the second half, scoring a pair of goals within three minutes of each other. Kieran Kramer cut the deficit in half with a perfectly placed shot in the 41st minute and then Jose De La Cruz evened the score in the 43rd minute. Red Land then shut the Donegal offense down and finished things out with goals by Paul Graces (55:00), Jack Clubber (60:00), and Jake Nagy (67:00). The Patriots outshot the Indians 7-6 and enjoyed a 6-2 corner kick advantage.

GIRLS’ SOCCER In a tight Section Three race in girls’ soccer, Donegal (1-1, 2-3-1) was in a log jam behind section leader ELCO (2-0, 6-1) with Solanco (1-1, 4-3), Lancaster Mennonite (1-1, 3-3), and Cocalico (1-1, 2-4-1) after a week of three games with mixed results. The ladies opened with Lancaster Mennonite last Tuesday and picked up a 2-1 win but then lost 4-2 to Elco and ended the week with a 1-1 tie versus Red Land on Saturday. The Blazers erased a one goal Donegal lead in the second half but a late goal by Laken Merchant proved the game winner for the visiting Indians. Merchant’s go-ahead score came off an assist by India Foreman, her second, when she was able to

MERCHANDISER - Donegal Edition sneak a shot by Lancaster Mennonite keeper Keaidi Zhang at the 73:07 mark. Zhang turned away seven shots on goal while her counterpart, Rena Rankin, stopped four of the Blazer’s five attempts on the day. Hayley Bauer struck first 18:20 into the game on Foreman’s first assist for the 1-0 lead that carried over into the break. Lauren Will then scored the equalizer at the 43:36 mark in the second half before Merchant’s late heroics sealed the victory. In Friday’s matchup with ELCO there were ample offensive opportunities on both sides as the Raiders fired off 15 shots while the Indians managed 10 but it was Maddy Bailey who got the better of it all even though her five saves were half that of Rankin’s 10. Bauer again drew first blood when she scored the first of two goals in the eighth minute of play, but ELCO’s Emma Fox (14:00) and Natalie Swingholm (15:00) notched two quick scores for the 2-1 lead before

Tanisha Grewal’s goal in the 22nd minute put the Raiders up by two. Bauer came through again in the 24th minute to pull Donegal within one at 3-2 before halftime, but it was the second score of the game for Grewal in the 62nd minute that ended any hopes of a comeback for the Indians. Saturday’s contest with Red Land began with a scoreless tie heading into the second half before Bauer and the Patriot’s Nace made it 1-1, a score which held up through regulation. With both defenses clamping down, neither Red Land nor Donegal could come up with the game winner over two periods of overtime. Rankin turned away 11 of the Patriot’s 17 shots on goal while nine of the Indian’s 12 were denied as well. CROSS COUNTRY Both the girls’ and boy’s teams entered last week’s tri-meet versus Lancaster Mennonite, LampeterStrasburg, and Octorara at Lancaster Mennonite with unblemished records, but only the girls came away still

undefeated at 5-0 while the boys lost one to finish 4-1. The boys’ only setback came in a 24-33 loss to the Pioneers while they defeated an undermanned Blazer squad 15-55 and won 20-41 over the Braves. Hunter Gehman finished third overall with a time of 18:20.55 to lead a pack of three Indians runners which finished in the top ten. Logan Fry’s time of 18:33.51 placed him fifth and Sam Rothstein came in seventh at 18:38.20. Brock Overlander (11th, 19:01.32) and Ethan Steck (12th, 19:14.04) finished out the scoring for Donegal. The Pioneers and Indians traded positions with Donegal scoring two, four, and six and L-S landing one, three, and five before closing out with seven through nine to notch the close victory. Also finishing for the Indians were Brandon Marcelo (18th, 20:28.94), Andrew Allen (24th, 20:46.84), Aydan Miller (36th, 22:32.86), Henry Warburton (41st, 23:21.84), Nathanael Jenny (53rd, 24:42.81), and Kyle Huncher (63rd, 29:58.86).

With the top two overall finishers in the girls’ race, Lampeter-Strasburg looked to put things away but Donegal, led by Hadley Shoaf’s third place finish at 21:07.21 and Myra Naqvi’s fifth place time of 21:11.02 helped lead the ladies to a hard fought 28-32 win. They also defeated Octorara, which only had one runner, and Lancaster Mennonite by identical 15-55 scores. With the Pioneers scoring at one, two and five, and Shoaf and Naqvi coming in at three and four the Indians ran off five straight finishes to edge out the win. That group of five which finished within a two-minute grouping included Amanda Fry who was seventh overall at 21:41.79, Rachel Fernald (8th, 21:42.41), Keri Anderson (9th, 22:53.87), Marleigh Ballard (10th, 23:14.06), and Emma Myers (11th, 23:28.14). Following up were Ella DeBruin (13th, 24:16.23), Meg Zell (14th, 24:17.76), Megan Myers (21st, 26:26.13), and Sarah Hinkel (28th, 28:17.81). FOOTBALL Tied for first place with Lancaster Catholic (3-0, 4-0), Donegal (3-0, 3-1) went toe-to-toe with Lebanon on Friday night with both teams combining for almost 800 yards of offense. The Indians held off a late rally by the Cedars to secure a 35-24 victory. Mason Ober ran for 102 yards and a touchdown on 23 carries while Jacob Shoemaker photo by Deb Grove caught six passes for

129 yards and another score to lead the Indians. They found themselves down 8-7 after Lebanon answered Ober’s fouryard score on the opening drive with a touchdown and successful two-point conversion on the ensuing possession. However, Donegal scored three unanswered touchdowns to close out the half with a 28-16 lead. A Joe Fox scramble from nine-yards out, sandwiched between two scoring passes from Trent Weaver (8-9, 158yds 2TD) to Shoemaker and Garrett Blake, respectively, accounted for the score at the break. Ober’s three-yard scramble for a touchdown in the third quarter made it 35-16 before the Cedars added their third touchdown and two-point conversion of the game. FIELD HOCKEY Donegal (2-1, 3-2) returned to its winning ways last week with victories over Lampeter-Strasburg and Solanco to maintain a three-way tie in second place of Section Two. After starting

September 18, 2019 - 11

the season 1-2, the Indians got back into the win column with a 4-3 win over the Pioneers and a 3-1 defeat of the Mares. The Pioneers scored last but it wasn’t enough as the Indians got two goals from Emma Miller and seven saves from C.C. Emswiler to hold off a late L-S rally. Reagan Clark put the Indians in the lead 2-1 after L-S tied the game at 1-1 following Miller’s first goal at the 11:10 mark of the first half. Miler made it 3-1 early in the second and Kiera Baughman added the eventual game winner at the 27:18 mark. Donegal only managed two penalty corners but had 10 shots on goal. Baughman scored twice against Solanco, including one in the first half, to give Donegal the 1-0 lead at the break. Solanco’s Maggie Hirst tied it at the 13:50 mark in the second, but another Baughman score followed by Miller’s solo shot gave the Indians all the insurance they needed.

Museum Becomes AIRA Test Site The Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania in Strasburg is currently one of several test sites within the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission (PHMC) for AIRA, the new smartphone app that visitors with limited vision can download and use at the museum. AIRA is a phone app that allows people who have low vision or are blind to connect to a trained professional agent who will describe what they are seeing. AIRA uses artificial intelligence and augmented reality to connect people in real time to remotely located professional agents, who deliver instant access to information and help completing such tasks as navigating health care facilities, using public transportation, and reading prescription labels. People who are blind or have low vision can use AIRA for free through AIRA Access at https://aira.io. PHMC has been working

with the Bureau of Blindness and Visual Services of the Pennsylvania Department of Labor and Industry as part of its 21st Century Museums initiative. AIRA is one of the ways in which the agency is incorporating technology into daily museum operations in an effort to better serve underserved guests. The Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania has already been geo-fenced for this program, which technically went online June 1, so the museum is already set up to allow the AIRA app to work for guests who have it. The other participating PHMC test sites are the Erie Maritime Museum, Old Economy Village, Pennsylvania Military Museum, Landis Valley Museum, and the State Museum of Pennsylvania. 16 - MERCHANDISER - Donegal Edition - September 18, 2019

Dutch Apple To Stage “Will Rogers Follies” The Dutch Apple Dinner Theatre will present “Will Rogers Follies” from Thursday, Sept. 26, through Wednesday, Nov. 6. Featuring showgirls and cowboys, the show is a breezy and stylish biography of the Oklahoma-born humorist, journalist, and friend of presidents. “Will Rogers Follies” depicts the ragsto-riches story of Will Rogers, who became a multimedia sensation who touched hearts and minds through a weekly radio talk show, newspapers, and movies. During the 1920s and ’30s, Rogers was a regular headliner in Florenz Ziegfeld’s dazzling show “The Follies,” which featured beautiful women in spectacular costumes.
