Celebrating Marietta with history, cars and dogs

played a major role in the pig iron industry, and that history will be spotlighted at the 18th annual Pig Iron Fest. This year’s festival, to be held on Saturday, Sept. 30, will offer three events in one, combining the Pig Iron Fest with a car show and Dog Fest. The main location of the festivities will be Community Bible Church, 331 Anderson Ferry Road, Marietta, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
“For the Pig Iron Fest, we wanted to get as many local restoration people involved as we could,” said Gary Schatz, a member of the Donegal Rotary Club, which is organizing the event. “We have people who have a lot of experience with the history of this area.” Lenny Droege will conduct walking tours of the Marietta Iron Furnace Park. “We’ll be running a shuttle from the church to the furnace area,” Schatz noted. Droege will lead visitors
through the Musselman-Vesta Iron Furnace Center, which tells the history of the timber, iron and railroad industries in the area through displays, artifacts and an HO-scale diorama of the iron furnace. Participants will also be able to visit the Donegal and Marietta No. 1 furnaces, weather permitting. The shuttle will take visitors by the historical homes of Henry Watts and Henry Musselman, both iron masters of the mid-1800s, before returning to the church grounds.
The car show portion of the event is open to all makes and models of cars and motorcycles. Registration will begin at 8 a.m. on the day of the event, and trophies will be awarded at approximately 2 p.m.
Two food trucks - Spud Muffin and Kurtz Concessions - will be on-site for the festival, Tim Rinard will provide musical entertainment throughout the day and Steve Bailey will set up a photo display. A Kids Zone will feature pumpkin painting,
Local Girl Scouts complete Silver Award project
BY FRANCINE FULTONMembers of a local Girl Scout troop recently completed their Silver Award project at Seven Sorrows of the Blessed Virgin Mary (SSBVM) Catholic School in Middletown. Students will be able to enjoy the Scouts’ work for years to come.
The Scouts, led by troop leader Kay Livelsberger and mentor Angela Waner, SSBVM principal, installed five drums for the younger students to play with and painted multiplication tables in the outdoor recess lot.
Scouts who completed the project were Gwen Hoover and Kaylee Meisinger, students at Elizabethtown Area Middle School, and Trinity Garcia, Ava Livelsberger and Meadow May, students at Donegal Junior High School. The girls are members of Troop 71686, which meets at Conoy Brethren in Christ Church, Elizabethtown.
“The Girl Scouts did a great job. The drums are in our preschool Play Lab,” noted Mindy Kennedy, SSBVM director of development, explaining that the Play Lab is an outdoor classroom used in early See Girl Scouts pg 7
hayrides and other activities.
“We’ll have Miss Jan from the Milanof-Schock Library there, and she’ll be doing story readings,” Schatz said. “The kids’ activities are
always very popular.”
The Dog Fest portion of the festivities will highlight furry friends, with ribbons awarded to every registered dog. “Dog Fest is
a fundraiser for local rescues,” Schatz shared, explaining that the second annual event was rained out in May, so organizers decided to add it to the Pig Iron festivities. See Marietta pg 4
Racing across America
BY CATHY MOLITORISIn a little over a week this summer, Jim Roberts covered more than 5,000 miles across the country in his 2008 C6 Corvette, made new friends, ate his fair share of gas-station food and raised money for the PA Breast Cancer Coalition.
It’s the 14th year Roberts has participated in One Lap of America, an event that brings together car enthusiasts from around the country to compete on racetracks nationwide. Over the years, Roberts has raised just under $50,000 for the charity through participation in the event.
The competition began at the Tire Rack facility in South Bend, Ind., Roberts explained, noting that Tire Rack is the national sponsor of One Lap of America. There, Roberts competed in the wet skid pad event, which turned out to be his best contest this year.
“I had a tremendous start to the week, finishing seventh overall out of 84 competitors, and second in class, in that event,” he recalled. “The really neat thing is that I was the fastest American brand car since the top six were all German cars with the first place being a Porsche GT3.”
From South Bend, the group See Racing pg 2

drove to Grissom Air Force Base in Indiana; northeast to the Youngstown, Ohio, area; south to Atlanta; northwest to Nashville; southwest to Texas; north to Oklahoma; into Kentucky to the National Corvette Museum Motorsports Park; and then back to South Bend, visiting tracks at each of these destinations.
“The most challenging part of this is that every other day we had a 700-mile-plus transit between tracks,” Roberts said. “We usually didn’t leave one place until about 3 p.m., and then we’d drive 700 miles and get into our motel about 1 or 2 a.m.”
Roberts credits his ability to complete the event to his transit driver, Gary “Duck” Drake, a friend from Cincinnati who has accompanied
Roberts on the trip for the past four years.
One Lap of America was created by Brock Yates, an automotive journalist and editor of “Car and Driver” magazine. He first created the Cannonball Run race that inspired the 1981 movie of the same name before changing the event to One Lap of America. Since 1992, the race has used the same format, having competitors drive almost 24 hours a day with competitions at racetracks throughout the country.
Although the goal is to win the races, Roberts participates for other reasons. He raises money for the PA Breast Cancer Coalition through sponsors, who are recognized by stickers Roberts puts on the roof of his car during the event. He also likes the challenge of the endurance event, the opportunity to reconnect with his racing friends and the chance to race.
The owner of Jim Roberts West Main Auto in Mount Joy, Roberts has always enjoyed cars. He started driving Corvettes in 1992 and became interested in track performance. He has been teaching since 2005, both to civilians on the motorsports side and to government personnel whose jobs may require precision driving. His home track for teaching is in Summit Point, W.Va.
Roberts is already looking forward to next year’s One Lap of America, and he’s excited to continue to compete.
“I love racing on the tracks and seeing my friends who I don’t see all year long,” he said.

FIA receives recognition, plans banquets
Friends In Action International (FIA), a faith-based nonprofit organization in Middletown, recently received multiple recognitions. The organization exists to assist missionaries serving in areas of limited infrastructure by using construction projects to help them share the Gospel with unreached people groups.
The organization recently received a four-star rating from Charity Navigator, an independent evaluator of nonprofits. Only one-quarter of the 1.5 million charities rated have achieved this status. The four-star rating is the highest rating offered by Charity Navigator and verifies that FIA demonstrates strong financial health and a commitment to accountability and transparency. A detailed review of financial documents, such as the organization’s Form 990, audited financials, and key policies, indicated that FIA adheres to sector best practices and financially executes its mission efficiently.
In addition, FIA was listed as a 2023 top-rated organization by GreatNonProfits.org after accumulating over 60 five-star reviews from supporters. As part of the process to select the winner, volunteers, donors, and people served by nonprofits are asked to share stories of inspiration, express appreciation, and rate charity service.
FIA also received the platinum rating - the highest rating available - from GuideStar,
an online watchdog site that presents mission, legitimacy, impact, financial, programming, transparency, and governance information about every IRS-registered nonprofit organization.
“Friends In Action is humbled to receive these recognitions, but any success must be shared with our faithful supporters and volunteers,” said Andy Bachert, the organization’s chief operating officer. Bachert was referring to the more than 50 travelers who volunteer on one of 10 projects in six remote locationsAfrica, Bolivia, Papua New Guinea, Nicaragua, Vanuatu, and Mexico - each year, as well as the more than 2,000 individuals on their mailing list who consistently pray or give to empower their support of frontline Gospel mission work.
Readers who would like to learn more about Friends In Action International can attend the organization’s annual awareness banquet. The event will be offered at two locations. On Friday, Oct. 27, a banquet will take place at Community Bible Church, 331 Anderson Ferry Road, Marietta, at 6 p.m. The second event will be held on Saturday, Oct. 28, at the Sheraton Harrisburg Hershey Hotel, 4650 Lindle Road, Harrisburg, at 5 p.m.
Attendees at both locations will enjoy a dinner buffet complete with a dessert bar. The keynote speaker each evening will be FIA’s executive director, Matt Durkee, who will share stories from his eight-
week visit serving the NiVan people of Vanuatu earlier this year. Guests will learn more about an upcoming Water And Sanitation Health (WASH) initiative planned by FIA to bring clean water to more than 3,500 villagers through a gravity-fed water system. In addition, missionaries James and Morgan Tumwesiigye will share how FIA has helped their work among Ugandan women through their ministry at the Milandila Family Center. The banquet will also include a show of appreciation for supporters, along with games, prizes and giveaways, and performance art by local high school students.
To purchase tickets or sponsor a table of eight people by Friday, Oct. 6, contact 717546-0208 or FIAUSA@FIAintl.org. Online registration is available at https://fiaintl.org/banquet/.
FIA has announced that $50,000 in funds are available to match any donated to the organization on the night of
LancasterHistory to screen films
LancasterHistory, 230 N. President Ave., Lancaster, will host a film screening event, “I Am Somebody: The Trailblazing Career of Madeline Anderson,” on Saturday, Sept. 23, at 2 p.m. Featuring two documentaries directed by acclaimed film director and Lancaster native Madeline Anderson, the event will aim to shine a spotlight on a groundbreaking filmmaker and two pivotal moments in the struggle for racial equality in America.
Attendees will watch Anderson’s 1960 film “Integration Report 1” and “I Am Somebody,” released in 1970. “Integration Report 1” captures the fight for black equality in multiple American places, including Montgomery, Ala.; Brooklyn, N.Y.; and Washington, D.C. “I Am Somebody” focuses on the
struggles of black hospital workers in Charleston, S.C. The film documents their efforts to seek equitable labor conditions through striking.
Shianne Hargrove, an information specialist at LancasterHistory, will introduce the films and will also be available to answer questions after the screening about Anderson and the additional research Hargrove has conducted on black artists in Lancaster. Sept. 23 will also be the opening of Hargrove’s new photograph exhibit in LancasterHistory’s Stoudt Gallery, titled “Black Lancastrians in the Arts: A Lasting Legacy.”
Born in 1924 in Lancaster, Anderson had an early passion for directing. She graduated from J.P. McCaskey High School in 1945, and her cinematic journey began at New

childhood education. “The multiplication table is on our recess lot. Kindergarten through eighth-grade students can access them during daily outdoor recess. Our teachers may also take their math lessons outside for games on the table.”
Meadow explained that the Silver Award is the secondhighest award in Girl Scouts. “Each girl must put in 50 hours,” she said, noting that the Scouts completed a total of 251 hours working on the project.
The idea for the project originated with Ava, whose family members are parishioners at SSBVM Catholic Church. “Our troop leader told us to ask around in order to figure out what was (a need) in the community,” said Meadow. “Ava asked the pastor and people at the church,
and they said that that they needed the five musical drums to be put in. We came up with the multiplication tables.”
The troop, along with help from family members, completed the project on weekends from April through August. “The school had the drums, and we had to put them in concrete,” Meadow explained. “We had to raise the money, but we got a donation from Home Depot in Lancaster.” JB Hostetter & Sons of Mount Joy donated the use of a cement mixer.
“The multiplication tables took the longest amount of time because we had to make sure the paint did not bleed and was not pigmented, so we had to go over it twice,” Meadow said. “We could not use the stencils twice, so we
