Volunteers Sought For Donegal Mentor Program By Chelsea Peifer
Since 2000, Donegal School District (DSD) has offered a mentoring program that connects students with adults as a way to help improve the self-esteem, motivation, and overall success of an individual. Initially implemented by Donegal Intermediate School principal Clare Reich, the program has continued to thrive by creating space and time for numerous relationships to flourish. DSD social worker Christina Helfrick explained that the program connects students, who are identified by a counselor or teachers, with a mentor
who serves as a caring adult and positive role model. The students may be shy and having a tough time making friends or may be experiencing a hardship at home, such as a divorce or death. Others may be struggling to focus and learn. “ We have a very compassionate community, and I often get questions (from people wondering how they) can help,” shared Helfrick. “Being a mentor is a wonderful way to help our community, because it’s an investment in our children. A caring adult in a child’s life builds resiliency, more than any other factor.” See Donegal Mentors pg 4
The Donegal School District mentoring program connected seventh-grade student David Zahm (left) with his mentor, David Christian, when Zahm was in third grade. The two have been meeting for weekly lunches during the school year ever since. A reception for individuals interested in becoming volunteer mentors with the program is planned for Oct. 2 at Donegal Primary School.

National Day Of Prayer For Mental Health Service Planned By Ann Mead Ash
This is only Gwen Didden’s second year helping to organize the Lancaster County National Day of Prayer for Mental Illness Recovery and Understanding, but as director of Faith Friendship Ministries in Mountville, Didden fully understands the significance of the event to those dealing with mental health issues. “The (prayer service) is important because it brings hope,” said Didden. “This (event) couples hope and prayer (to offer) spiritual guidance (that) is so important for people who are managing mental illness or living with people who are dealing with mental illness.” See Prayer Service pg 16
Gwen Didden (left) and Cathi Myers (right) are two of the organizers of the National Day of Prayer for Mental Illness Recovery and Understanding service that will be held at Calvary Church on Oct. 11. No Longer Alone Ministries and Faith Friendship Ministries are sponsoring the event with assistance from Handi-Vangelism Ministries.
The Battle of Mogadishu took place 25 years ago, but the details remain fresh in the mind of retired United States Army Maj. Timothy Ryan. “Not a day goes by that I don’t think about being over there with my guys or something that happened over there,” said Ryan. “I remember it so vividly.” The Battle of Mogadishu was fought on Oct. 3 and 4 in 1993 as various United States military elite special operations units were in Mogadishu, Somalia, to destabilize the government and bring humanitarian aid, along with the support of UNOSOM II (United Nations Operation in Somalia). Ultimately the goal of the mission was accomplished, but things became deadly See Mogadishu pg 2

Sporadic fighting continued through the night, but at daybreak Ryan’s unit headed for cover, as most operations are carried out under nightfall to help ensure safety and success. “We were fighting against an entire city, but there was just no question about it: We weren’t going to leave anyone behind,” said Ryan. “(The Battle of Mogadishu) is a real testament to the American soldier and their resolve to not leave anyone behind.” Ryan emphasized that American soldiers are trained not only to fight battles, but to value and
recognize humanity even in war. He noted that in Somalia, enemy combatants would use women and children as shields, sending them into the front battle lines. “They used the fact that we were decent people to their advantage,” remarked Ryan. “But it is a deep-seeded American value that we fight with honor.” According to Ryan, the battle ended with 18 Americans dead and 78 wounded. “It was a really defining period of my life,” Ryan said. Ryan, who grew up in Lebanon, currently resides in Manheim with his wife, Gayle, and their three children. He will travel to Fort Drum, N.Y., in early October to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the Battle of Mogadishu.

ECS Comfort Celebrates 30th Anniversary ECS Comfort, 31 N. Spruce St., Elizabethtown, is celebrating its 30th anniversary. ECS Comfort specializes in the installation and service of heating and cooling equipment for both residential and commercial customers. Dave and Tracey Sattazahn started ECS Comfort (then known as Environmental Controls & Service Inc.) out of their home in Hershey in 1988. At the time, Dave had been working as a field service technician for another heating and cooling company in the area for more than 10 years. After securing a few commercial accounts, he launched his own business, with the goal of providing superior service to area customers.
Dave soon hired a helper and moved the business to a building on Gates Road in Hershey. In the late 1990s, the business started serving residential customers, and that piece of the business grew quickly. By 2010, the majority of the company’s customers were residential. Around that time, ECS Comfort purchased the old Simon Candy building in Elizabethtown and moved to the 31 N. Spruce St. location in the summer of 2010. From this location, ECS Comfort has been able to expand its services to include customers throughout the Lancaster, Lebanon, and Harrisburg areas. The business employs technicians who live as far away as Lancaster and Dillsburg, and the

with Troop 307 since 1990, has planned and completed backcountry treks for Scouts at Philmont Scout Ranch in Glacier National Park, Sequoia National Park, Yellowstone National Park, and Smokey Mountains National Park, among other destinations throughout the country. “All I want is for the Scouts to have a good trip that challenges them, and these treks will do that. You do not have a safety net for immediate help; you must rely on your group’s abilities, King explained. On the Yosemite trip, the Scouts also had the opportunity to explore the Kings Canyon, Sequoia, and Pinnacles national parks. Additionally, members visited Disneyland, went whale watching, and watched a Major League Baseball game. Scouts met requirements for badges and advancement during the trip, such as the 50-miler patch and badges for cooking, hiking, backpacking, camping, and orienteering, to name a few. Planning is currently underway for a trip to Rocky Mountain National Park, Grand Tetons National Park, or Utah national parks in the summer of 2019. In July, the Scouts in Boy Scout Troop 307, sponsored by Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church in Manheim, along with Boy Scouts from Troop 53 in Maytown and Troop 84 in Lancaster, ventured to Yosemite National Park in California for a backcountry hike. The crew split into two groups - one trekking into the northwestern area of the park near the Hetch Hetchy reservoir and the other going into the southern area of the park near Wawona. According to Boy Scout Troop 307 leader William King, each group completed a five-day, 50-plus-mile backpacking trek through the wilderness where they encountered challenging trails filled with granite rock formations, 9,000- to 10,000-foot high mountains, and wildlife. Many of the attendees had previous backcountry experience, which helped them through the trek. King emphasized to each participant that each group needed to work as a team to complete the trek and to start and finish as a team. The Scouts were successful, only suffering minor blistering, cuts, and scrapes. In preparation, the youths had logged many backpacking hikes, day hikes, and training - including a 20-mile day hike completed in under eight hours. King, who has been working

The division of nursing at Pennsylvania College of Health Sciences held its second annual Dedication of Hands ceremony on Aug. 22. All nursing students were invited to take part in the event, which stresses the significance of a nurse’s hands as symbols of the holistic care nurses provide to a patient’s mind, body and spirit. The Dedication of Hands is a new ceremony for Pennsylvania College of Health Sciences nursing students, replacing the historical tradition of capping ceremonies, during which novice students would receive their cap prior to attending their first clinical experience and returning students would receive a stripe indicating their program year. During the ceremony, faculty members performed the washing and drying of hands, symbolically uniting faculty and students in the profession of nursing. Faculty member Kay Buchanan and Sage Olnick, Class of 2005, were set to offer keynote remarks during three sessions offered throughout the day. The legacy of nursing care was celebrated through the inclusion of two special guests. Cassie Kohr, a student in the three-year Bachelor of Science in Nursing program, attended with Mary Coldren Kurian, a 1936 graduate of the school, then the Lancaster General Hospital
School of Nursing. Now 103 years old, Mary is believed by the college to be its oldest living alumna. Kurian enjoyed a long career at Lancaster General Hospital as a nurse anesthetist, retiring in 1980. Kohr and Kurian met at Homestead Village in Lancaster, where Kohr works part time and Kurian has lived since 1996. While nursing education and practice have
changed dramatically since Kurian entered the field, the two women have bonded over their shared devotion to the profession. After learning that Kurian’s 1936 class photo had been misplaced during a move, Kohr worked with the Pennsylvania College of Health Sciences’ office of alumni relations to find a replacement, which she gave to Mary as a Christmas gift last year.

The Central Pennsylvania Handbell Festival (CPAHF) presented a $500 check to the Forever Friends Bell Choir on Aug. 20 to provide financial assistance for its bell ministry. The funds were raised at the March 10 CPAHF held at Lebanon Area Evangelical Free Church in Jonestown. Forever Friends is a monthly outreach program held at Palmyra Grace Brethren Church that offers additional support to all individuals in the community, including those with intellectual disabilities, autism, or both who have difficulty attending a typical worship service and prefer a more relaxed atmosphere. Forever Friends is expanding the program to include an inclusive, mixed-ability handbell choir that will meet three times per month for music and fellowship. A local handbell

MERCHANDISER - Donegal Edition -
The Pennsylvania Veterans of Foreign Wars invites veterans of all ages and from all service eras to utilize its Service Officer Network to receive free information and assistance for government benefits including VA healthcare, compensation, pension, education and dependent benefits. Surviving spouses can also use these VFW Service Officers to learn about their eligibility for VA benefits. A VFW state service officer is now available for scheduled appointments at Lititz VFW Post 1463 on Mondays from noon to 5 p.m. To make an appointment, readers may call 717-234-7927 and specify Lititz as their preferred appointment location. The service is made possible by Pennsylvania Act 66. The addition of Lititz as a VFW service officer outreach location was chosen to reduce travel time
and expense for veterans living in rural areas, who might otherwise drive farther to receive assistance with a VA claim. Veterans do not have to be a VFW member to receive benefit filing assistance, but they must provide a DD-214 discharge form and possibly other information about their military service in order to enter a VA claim. Veterans requesting that the VFW becomes involved in their claim will need to sign a form declaring the VFW as their power of attorney. Veterans who have already signed a power of attorney with another organization should either follow up with that organization or sign over their power of attorney to the VFW. Vietnam veterans should know that the VA has defined some health conditions as being “presumptive” for being caused by exposure to the defo-
liant Agent Orange. Veterans with these health conditions may be eligible for benefits (there are qualifying issues with each condition): AL amyloidosis, chronic B-cell leukemias, chloracne, diabetes mellitus Type 2, Hodgkin’s disease, ischemic heart disease, multiple myeloma, nonHodgkin’s lymphoma, Parkinson’s disease, peripheral neuropathy/ early-onset, porphyria cutanea tarda, prostate cancer, respiratory cancers, and soft tissue sarcomas. For more details, readers may visit www.va.gov and search for Agent Orange information. For general information about the VFW’s State Service Officer network, visit www.vfwpahq.org and select the “VA Claims Help” section. Sections for “Veterans Links” and “Veterans Resources” also provide helpful information.

Labuko is the founder of the nonprofit Omo Child Foundation. His mission is to end the ritual practice of infanticide called mingi, meaning cursed, among the tribes his region. Lady Harriers Win Bulldog Invitational by Vaughn Brown
The girls’ cross country team won the 23rd annual Bulldog Invitational at Big Spring High School on Saturday, Sept. 15, for the first time since 2015 placing four girls in the top 20. The Bulldog Invitational features the top teams in District 3 Senior Rachel Fernald led the way finishing 5th, freshman Hadley Shoaf followed in 12th, junior Myra Naqvi finished 23rd, junior Ella DeBruin was 28th, and sophomore Keri Anderson finished 40th with the top four girls on the team earning medals. FOOTBALL Donegal’s running game remained productive Friday night as the Indians racked up 292-yards on the ground against visiting Ephrata but it was the Mounts’ offense that eventually wore the Indian defense down in the second half on the way to a 27-20 win. With the loss, Donegal (3-1, 3-2) fell into a third-place tie with ELCO (3-1, 4-1) in Section Three. Dalton Mullhausen was held to 12 yards on three attempts on the night, but it was his third try that put Donegal up 14-0 with 9:14 to go in the first half capping a six play 59-yard drive with a plunge from the one-yard line. Prior to that, in the first quarter, Zion Gibbs (14-166, TD) spear-headed a 65-yard scoring drive that netted the Indians their first score of the game when quarterback Dylan Martin (2-7, 25 yards, TD) connected with Mullhausen on an 18-yard touchdown toss on fourth-and- eight. Ephrata responded with two scores to tie the game in the final nine minutes of the first half, both of which came from quarterback Caden Keefer who rushed 33 times for 114 yards and two touchdowns and was 9-18 on pass attempts with 131 yards through the air. “We had some injuries to key kids last night,” said head coach Chad Risberg. “However, we always have the “ next man up” mentality. Our defense couldn’t get off the field on 3rd down in the second half. We have to fix that this week at practice.” Behind some more hard running from the team’s leading rushers Jordan Minnick (14-105) and Gibbs, who

That drive began on Donegal’s own four-yard line after a downed ELCO punt and was fueled by Minnick’s 27 yards on two carries. Donegal’s defensive issues showed on the following drive by the Mounts who drove 60 yards on 17 plays and went ahead 21-20 on a three-yard plunge by Richard Geer (11-40, TD). A Donegal fumble on the ensuing possession was recovered by the Ephrata defense and resulted in another touchdown when Keefer connected with Samuel Knowles (2-53, TD) for the final score of the game. Photo by Bob Diller “Our kids will rebound from this Donegal’s Owen Kling (77) and AJ McCarty pressure Ephrata quarterback Caden Keefer during last learning experience,” added Risberg. “I’m sure of that.” BOYS’ SOCCER With four games last week the Donegal boys had plenty to keep them busy including a matchup with Section Three leader Cocalico (4-0, 91) last Monday in which they gave the Eagles all they could handle and almost pulled off a huge upset before falling 4-3 in overtime. In their other three games Donegal lost to Spring Grove 2-1, beat Octorara 3-2 and lost to Ephrata 3-1. Donegal (2-2, 4-7) came out blazing against the Eagles and quickly jumped ahead 1-0 when Jose De La Cruz beat Cocalico keeper Peyton Stetter in just the second minute of play. In all, Stetter was able stop six of the Indians nine shots while Cocalico managed eight shots, with Gavin Murren turning away one for the Indians. That lead was short lived, however, when Joe Zimmerman notched the first of two first half goals tying the game in the sixth minute and then once again in the 38th after Philip Herzog regained the lead for the Indians with a score in the 22nd minute. Both sides scored again in the second half to make it 3-3, a score which held through the end of regulation. It was Cocalico that struck first in overtime to preserve its undefeated section record when Aaron Weitzel found a way to crack the Indian defense and seal the victory with a blast past Murren. Spring Grove visited Mount Joy last Tuesday and scored with 31:51 remaining in the game to go ahead 20 off the foot of Mitch Aughenbaugh. Zac Runkle cut the deficit in half when he found a crack in the Rockets defense, beating Bryce Bell in the near corner of the net on a Donegal corner kick with 11:08 on the clock, but that was all the offense could muster against a stiff Spring Grove defense. Ryan McKowen put the Rockets on the board with 21:47 on the clock in the first half for the 1-0 lead. Bell ended the game with three saves while Donovan Henriques turned away two for Donegal. It was a tale of two halves when Octorara came to visit on Thursday. All five goals where tallied in the opening

MERCHANDISER - Donegal Edition frame with neither team mounting any offense in the second. The Braves drew first blood when Nathaniel Sellers beat Henriques four minutes into the game, but it was Donegal that accounted for the next three before Octorara found the back of the net again on a Miguel ZavalaCruz goal eight minutes before halftime. Henriques turned away three of the Brave’s shots on goal while Keith Lambert stopped six for Octorara. Herzog got the ball rolling for Donegal when he scored his first of two off an assist by Runkle to tie the game at 1-1 with 24:05 on the clock. Three minutes later he blasted a solo shot past Lambert to give Donegal the lead before Runkle got in on the action when he fired a penalty kick into the back of the net to make it 3-1 with 12:17 to go before the break. Joseph Turbedsky directed a pass to Connor Flory in the 67th minute of the game against Ephrata on Saturday which Flory proceeded to deposit in the back of the net for the lone Donegal score on the afternoon. With goals by Ben Patrushev (7:00), Caleb Gaston (30:00), and Angel Gonzalez-Garcia (57:00), Ephrata built a comfortable 3-0 lead and was able to hold off the Donegal to secure the victory. Henriques saved two for Donegal while Cole Hummel stopped four in goal for the Mounts as each team fired off five shots. GIRLS’ SOCCER Playing four games last week as well, the Donegal girls (2-1-1, 3-5-2) also began their week of play against Cocalico but came away with a 1-1 tie last Monday at home. They followed with a 2-0 loss to Spring Grove, a 4-0 win over Octorara and a 3-1 defeat to Ephrata. Donegal came out strong against the Eagles to open the first half of play but Cocalico dominated the rest of the game outshooting the Indians 13-4, but only finding one answer to Lauren Stwalley’s stellar play in the net. The senior keeper turned away 11 Cocalico attempts allowing the Donegal offense opportunities, but a stiff Eagle defense kept the Indians from mounting any kind of an attack for much of

the night. Despite the shot disadvantage, Donegal’s Nat Fellenbaum made hers count when she collected the rebound of a Kyla Collins shot that keeper Adrienne McGallicher could not contain and sent it home from seven yards out for the 1-0 lead with 26:40 remaining in the half. Sage Musser tied things up, however, when she sent a free kick past Stwalley and into the upper left corner with only 3:28 on the clock before the break for what turned out to be the final score of the game through regulation and two overtime periods. Spring Grove scored twice in the first half off the foot of Carley Kibler to come away with the victory over the
lady Indians last Tuesday at home. Kibler scored solo shots in the 23rd and 38th minutes of the game, beating Stwalley who had six saves on the day. Despite outshooting the Rockets 16-9 and holding a 2-1 advantage in corners, the Indians could not find a way past keeper Carlene Marquette who denied Donegal 12 times.
Four different players scored for Donegal in Thursday’s win over Octorara as the Indian’s defense pitched a shutout behind Stwalley’s five stops. Janell Brinser’s goal in the 17th minute was the lone score of the first half while India Foreman (44:00), Hayley Brower (52:00), and Alex Daly (58:00) all tallied solo goals in the second for insurance. Hannah Dunn and Brinser connected in the first half of Saturday’s game with Ephrata to tie things up at 1-1 on Brinser’s shot, but Olivia Myer (25:00) and Abigail Wiest (47:00) closed the door on the Indians in the second to finish 3-1. The Mounts outshot Donegal 10-4 with Stwalley stopping seven. TENNIS With makeup games due to weather, the Donegal girls played four matches in a busy schedule last week and notched four losses along the way. They lost to Cocalico 6-1, Elizabethtown 4-3, Manheim Central 7-0, and Solanco 5-2. Last Monday at home against the Eagles it was Emily Ashley who provided the lone win for Donegal. She defeated Cara DiCiano 6-1, 6-3 in straight sets in the first of two wins overall for the week. Lancaster Country Day School (LCDS) awarded four $12,000 John A. Jarvis Merit Scholarships to area students. All Middle and Upper School applicants were eligible, and scholarships are renewable each year through graduation. The scholarship honors former head of school John Jarvis, who sought to make LCDS accessible to a wide range of deserving students. This year’s scholarship recipients are Sarah Biltz, Annabelle Copeland, McKenna Kraft, and Jeremy Ouilikon. Ninth-grader Sarah is the daughter of Joanne and Todd Biltz of Lancaster.
years of experience, will speak about practical tips for finding hope, including an explanation of the LEAP method developed by Dr. Xavier Amador. LEAP stands for Listen-EmpathizeAgree-Partner, and the method is designed to help a caregiver gain the trust of a patient. LEAP involves empathizing without judgment. Loice Byler, founder of a ministry that helps those who struggle with anxiety and depression, especially women, will share her personal story of being a mental health consumer, including her acceptance and denial of treatment in the past. “She has seen a difference in her life when she has accepted treatment,” said Myers. “We thought that would be a good viewpoint to share.” Myers added that Byler will also offer practical tips and words of hope. Each year, organizers choose theme verses for the observance. This year’s verses include Psalm 33:22, which reads, “May your unfailing love be with us, Lord, even as we put our hope in you.” Another theme verse is Hebrews 10:23, which reads, “Let us hold unswervingly to the hope we profess, for he who promised is faithful.” Myers reported that the service will include congregational prayer, reading of the Scripture, and time for small group prayer as requested. There is no cost to attend the service, and registration is not necessary. Readers who have questions may call 717-390-4891 or 717-285-5596.
