Valentine’s Day is often an occasion for happy changes in life: first confessions of love, confirmations of continued affection, and even proposals of marriage. For Willow Street residents Baron and Rene Geib, who have been married for 27 years, Valentine’s Day 2017 brought them into the section of their vows that no one wants to experience: the commitment to love in sickness as well as in health. The ordeal began with what looked like a blood blister on Baron’s arm. Heeding Rene’s urging, Baron had the spot biopsied, and on Valentine’s Day 2017, he received the diagnosis of cancer. A week later, he received

Baron has been a nurse for many years but has been unable to work since his disease progressed. Rene became a registered nurse this year, and she will begin working in October. That will enable her to support herself and the three grandchildren for whom they are the primary caregivers. To relieve some of the stress caused by medical bills and living expenses, as well as to help the Geibs to move into a house with a first-floor master suite, friends have organized a Family Fun Fest that will be held on Saturday, Oct. 12, from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. at the Hempfield Fire Department Pavilion in Salunga Park, located next to the fire station, 19 W. Main St., Landisville. Admission to the Family Fun Fest will be free of charge, but there will food to buy and activity tickets to purchase. Along with activities geared toward children’s interests, the fest will feature carnival games, face painting, pumpkin painting, scarecrow making, balloon sculpting from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., and a silent auction. After surgery to remove the tumor and some of his lymph nodes, Baron was told he had stage 3 cancer. Unfortunately, the surgery did not stop the progression of the disease. All of Baron’s lymph nodes had to be removed, and, in four days, a tumor grew from a pea size to a 4-inch diameter around his brachial artery and brachial nerve, causing complications in his arm. By the time Valentine’s Day rolled around again in 2018, the cancer had entered stage 4. Baron has undergone radiation and immunotherapy treatment, but the onset of pneumonitis caused the treatment to halt. He is now receiving only pain management as the primary course of care, Rene reported. If the pneumonitis decreases, immunotherapy may be restarted. “We are in limbo but have accepted whatever God has in store for our lives,” Rene said. “We take one day at a time, trusting God for each moment. We have decided to take what we have, enjoy it, learn from it, share it with others, and just live the best we

Tickets are available for a set fee. Interested individuals may call 717426-3528 to reserve tickets. According to Thomas, in 1819, a group of people of color and of African descent gathered regularly for religious services in a pasture area of Marietta called Heisey Woods, which became known as Cassel’s Park in later years. 1833, land was acquired from Christian and Margaret Hershey in the 100 block of Green Lane - now Fairview Avenue. The property was described as including a stable, orchard and a carriage house. The congregation remodeled the carriage house and worshiped there until it was destroyed by a fire in 1861, according to documentation in the Pioneer Fire Company minutes book. After many hardships and prayers, a new church building was erected on the same site. In 1969, that building was torn down to make way for a more modern structure, which was made possible through the generosity of Mrs. Anthony L. Resch. The new church building was dedicated on April 26, 1970. The cemetery beside the church is the resting place of several black Civil War veterans, including Wesley Armstrong, who fought with the 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry Regiment, which was featured in the film “Glory.” Weekly Sunday activities at Marietta Bethel AME include Sunday school at 10 a.m., followed by a worship service at 11 a.m. All are welcome. For more information on Marietta Bethel AME, readers may call the church at 717-426-3528.

Donegal’s Julia Mylin drives a kick past Solanco’s Meg Bailey during the Indians’ 1-0, Section Three loss at home last Tuesday.

Heading into last week’s slate of games the Donegal girls’ soccer team was 3-1 in league play but in two games the Indians came away with a 1-0 loss to Solanco and tied Lancaster Mennonite 1-1, placing them squarely in fourth place of Section Three (3-2-1, 5-5-2). In a tough, physical game versus Solanco at home on senior night last Tuesday, Donegal was able to fire off some good shots on goal, but the Mare’s Gabi Dolan had an answer for each one. She and the Indian’s Rena Rankin faced off through a scoreless first half in which neither one blinked and featured Rankin charging out of the net to successfully win a challenge on one of her eight saves of the game. In the end, however, it was Solanco’s Sammi Jackson that found pay dirt when she took a Nikki Trout pass early in the second half and snuck it by Rankin in the 42nd minute of play. Despite a spirited effort by the Indians, in which they got off 14 shots against Dolan, it was Jackson’s goal that stood as the game winner. Midway through the second half on Friday against the Blazers, and trailing by one, Donegal’s Kyla Collins found a way past keeper Keaidi Zhang to tie things up at 2-2, a score which held up through regulation as well as both overtime periods. Lancaster Mennonite used two first half goals from Kendra Coryell to take a 2-0 lead but were not able to keep the Indians off the board for long. After watching Coryell score in the 18th and 37th minutes, the Blazer’s Zhang finally cracked when Sophia Floyd fired a shot past her and into the net in the 38th minute to pull Donegal within one. With Rankin settled in after the two Blazer goals, she and the Indian’s defense were able to shut down Lancaster Mennonite’s offense for the rest of the game while Donegal peppered Zhang with 26 shots. Collins’ score came in the 56th minute and proved to be the final goal of the game. FOOTBALL In a game that featured a lot of ground pounding football, it was Donegal’s stable of horses that proved to be more up to the task as the Indians maintained their hold on first place in Section Three with a 28-13 win over Octorara on Friday night. With neither team eclipsing the century mark in passing, it was the tandem of Joe Fox and Garrett Blake which led Donegal (5-0, 5-1) to 317 yards on the ground while Octorara (2-3, 2-4) used a true team approach with seven runners, none of whom gained over 60 yards, to amass 172. Scoreless through the 9:30 minutes of play, Donegal marched down the field on an eight play drive that started on its own 12-yard line and ended, ironically, with Jake Shoemaker (5-53, TD) hauling in a 20-yard scoring strike from quarterback Trent Weaver to put the Indians up 7-0 with 11:12 to go in the second quarter. Following a quick score by the Braves on a 65-yard pitch-and-catch

from Jansen Schempp to James Taylor, the Indians put together a 16 play, 76-yard drive with a heavy dose of Blake (18-108, 2TD) and Fox (23-146, TD) which chewed up almost eight minutes of clock. The result was a three-yard score from Fox which put Donegal ahead 14-7 at halftime. The Indians got off to a bad start in the second half with a muffed kickoff return which placed them on their own five-yard line followed by a three-and-out. A short punt and long return by the Braves eventually resulted in another Octorara touchdown on Logan Forte’s one-yard plunge. The resulting PAT attempt was blocked, preserving the Donegal lead at 14-13 with 8:06 to go in the third. Featuring another long drive, the Indian’s second possession of the half started at their own 35 after the Braves’ kickoff sailed out of bounds and ended with the first of Blake’s two scores of the game. Marching 65-yards and running over seven minutes of time off the clock, Donegal only passed the ball one time, a 15-yard completion to Blake, which set up his six-yard rumble to make it 21-13 with 1:58 to go in the third. Donegal’s defense did a good job of bending but not breaking while recovering one fumble and twice holding the Braves offense to turnover-on-downs, both in the second half, with the first one resulting in Blake’s final score of the night. After stopping Octorara’s fourth down attempt on the Donegal 46, the Indians again used only one passing play while driving 54-yards in 10 plays with Blake taking it in from the 10 to make it 28-13 with under six minutes to play in the game. Mason Ober (6-18) and Weaver (3-10) added small gains on the ground as well for the Indians in a rushing attack that averaged almost six yards a carry. Owen Fisher also caught one pass from Weaver for 16 yards. TENNIS Only playing one match last week, the Indians suffered a 6-1 loss at the hands of Section Two leader LampeterStrasburg (7-0). The loss put Donegal (52) in third place behind Manheim Central (6-1) while the Barons took the final spot in this week’s L-L League team championships after barely edging out the Indians in their matchup the prior week. Emily Ashley’s 6-2, 6-4 victory over Isabelle Brown in number one singles play represented Donegal’s lone win against the undefeated Pioneers. Next up for the Indians is the L-L League flight championship which begins Thursday. BOYS’ SOCCER It was a successful week for the Indians as they came away with two wins and one loss over three games. Donegal (3-3, 7-6-1) was in fourth place of Section Three after winning 2-0 at Solanco, 1-0 at Octorara and losing 2-1 against Lancaster-Mennonite. The Indians used two first half goals versus the Mules to secure the shutout victory last Monday. Donegal’s defense and goal keeper Owen Ollar blanketed the Solanco offense, not allowing the Mules to

gather any momentum throughout the contest. Philip Herzog scored in the 19th minute in Thursday’s game with Octorara for the 1-0 lead which held throughout regulation while the Braves were only able to muster one shot on goal which Ollar was able to turn away. The Indians fired nine shots against Octorara keeper Keith Lambert while earning two corner

kicks to six for the Braves. In a heart breaker versus the Blazers on Friday, the Indians watched a late lead disappear as they dropped a close one in overtime on the road. Herzog broke a scoreless tie in the 73rd minute of play, but Lancaster Mennonite’s Ethan Groff tied the game three minutes later, forcing the extra play. Ollar turned away four of the Blazer’s

MERCHANDISER - Donegal Edition six shots on the night but was not able to stop the final one when Noah Swartzentruber ended the game with his game winner in the 96th minute. Donegal was outshot 6-4 but enjoyed a 5-3 corner advantage. FIELD HOCKEY Donegal (6-2, 7-4) took its fourth loss of the season last week but was also able to redeem an earlier loss to a section rival as well. They went 2-1 over three games played with a 2-0 loss to Oley Valley followed by a 1-0 victories over both Elizabethtown and Manheim Central. Two first half goals stood for the Lynx last Monday as Oley Valley came into Mount Joy and defeated the Indians in a Photo by Vaughn Brown game that featured only 10 shots on Donegal’s Aysha Gibbs fends off Solanco’s Alyssa Harpe as she goal combined between the two teams. takes possession of the ball in the Indians’ 1-0 loss at home last The Indians only managed two while earning four corners and keeper Tuesday. C.C. Emswiler recorded six saves in the cage while Cassidy Drobek turned away two for Oley Valley. In a quick turnaround, the Indians traveled to take on the Bears from neighboring Elizabethtown on Tuesday and got back to their winning ways in the process. Kiera Baughman scored on an assist from Morgan Saunders with 9:31 remaining in the first half for the only goal of the game and the only one

Donegal needed as Emswiler stayed perfect in the cage. With a stifling defense that only allowed two shots on goal, Donegal was able to secure the one-goal victory while keeping the Lynx keeper tandem of Alaina Telenko and Hailey Mertz busy with 10 shots of its own. The Indians also out cornered the Bears 11-5. After suffering a 4-1 loss in the first game of the season for both teams back on September 5th, Donegal gained its revenge against Manheim Central on Thursday at home. Scoreless through most of the first half, Baughman put away the game winner with only 11 seconds before the break. Donegal’s defense blanketed the Barons, holding them to only six shots on goal, five of which Emswiler turned away with Saunders stepping in as well to defend one. In turn, Donegal peppered Mikayla Regan with 14 shots while earning 11 corners. Baughman’s goal, while timely, did not come easy as she worked in from the near side and had the initial shot knocked away by Regan. On the rebound, however, a scrum ensued in front of the cage before Baughman got another stick on it and put it away for good.

Ceremony To Celebrate Veteran, Rescuers A police officer from Mount Joy Borough arrived on the scene and took over chest compressions, and a firefighter from Mount Joy Borough assisted with the veteran’s breathing. Susquehanna Valley EMS started Advanced Life Support care, which included injecting IV heart rhythm medication and attaching him to a heart monitor, which transmitted the data to the hospital so the hospital could be pre-

pared for his arrival. After 10 minutes and four different shocks to the veteran’s heart, the man awoke and was rapidly transported to the hospital. Mike Fitzgibbons, Chief of Susquehanna Valley EMS, attributed the successful outcome to the teamwork involved, from bystanders’ immediate actions to the availability of the AED. To

celebrate the veteran’s life and to honor those who saved him, a Cardiac Arrest Save Ceremony will take place on Saturday, Oct. 5, at 11 a.m. at Giant Food Store, 789 E. Main St., Mount Joy. The community is invited. The survivor, bystanders, paramedics, police, and firefighters will be available to answer questions. During this ceremony, the survivor will donate an AED to the Mount Joy VFW.
