Formore than 20 years, Ginger Goudie taught students at The Janus School in Mount Joy, making an impact every day.

“She taught math, and she also taught our junior and senior success classes, where she helped students with internships and opportunities to be more involved in the community,” said James Dempsey, dean of students. “She was also a big fan of fall and a big fan of the outdoors. She was an incredible person who gave it her all in the classroom and outside the classroom for our students.”

Goudie passed away from cancer last November, and the staff members at The Janus School wanted to honor her memory. They are organizing the Ginger Goudie Memorial 5K and The Janus School Fall Fest on Saturday, Oct. 28. The events will be

held at the school, 205 Lefever Road, Mount Joy.

“ We think it’s absolutely important to remember her and her legacy,” noted Dempsey, who added that all profits from the 5K will support the Ginger Goudie Financial Aid Fund.

“You can walk or run and then walk around and check out the Fall Fest activities.”

The 5K will begin at 10 a.m., f ollowed by a kids’ half-mile fun run at 11:30 a.m. The Fall Fest will also begin at 11:30 a.m. Medals will be awarded for various age groups in the 5K, and trophies will be presented to the top male and top female finisher.

The Fall Fest will feature a variety of family-friendly activities, including bounce houses, crafts and food. Food trucks on-site will be Gourmet Julie’s Way, Noel’s Café, Stoney’s Burgers and Fries, What’s For Supper and TJ’s Ice Cream.

The festivities are open to anyone in the community, and head of school Heather Strunk hopes the day will raise awareness of everything The Janus School does.

“ We are the only K to 12 independent school for students with learning differences in southcentral Pennsylvania,” Strunk explained. “We serve students in six countiesBerks, Cumberland, Dauphin, Lancaster, Lebanon and York.”

The Janus School currently has 74 students enrolled, but new students are accepted throughout the school year, she noted.

“ We’re working to empower our

You’re invited to go treasure hunting at Maytown Reformed United Church of Christ. The church, located at 11 E. Elizabeth St., will hold its annual Fall Bazaar on Saturday, Oct. 21, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.

“You never know what you’re going to find,” said event chair Chrisie Emswiler. “Somebody’s junk is another person’s treasure. There’s treasure to be found here.” The bazaar will feature tables set up both inside and outside the church, depending on the weather.

“This world can be a dark, gloomy place, from things going on in the world to personal trials in our lives,” said Jessica Rockey, children and youth director of Glossbrenner United Methodist Church. “We want to offer you a break from that to have some good old-fashioned fun.”

The church will host a Family Fall Festival from 5 to 7 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 7, at 713 Church St., Mount Joy.

Rockey said people can expect a free, fun evening out of the house, with opportunities for children to

win prizes, jump in a bounce house, paint pumpkins, make crafts and enjoy free food, including hot dogs, popcorn and build-your-own s’mores.

“My personal favorite is the family photo we provide, where the kids can make a frame, and they can look back every year to see how they grew from one Fall Fest to the next,” Rockey shared. “The best part is everything is free. I know how it can be, being a mother myself and your children constantly begging for money at an event. We are blessed to have some generous folks in our See Festival pg 2

church and local businesses that help make this event possible.”

Last year was the first time the church held a Fall Fest, and it was very well-received, Rockey said, noting that she enjoys attending other fests in the area with her family. “I wanted our church to get in on this kind of fun in the community,” she remarked. “It’s not only fun for the guests, but the volunteers at church really connect with each other and the children. There is just something so special about coming together for the greater good to show Christ’s love that is really so rewarding.”

She noted that events like the Fall Fest help the church members with their mission of community outreach. “Of course, we want to get

the name of our church out there, but most importantly, we want to get the name of Jesus out there to people,” she said, noting that although the event is held at a church, it won’t be overly religious. “We want to show the love of Jesus and offer a free event to people for them to make memories with their family and so we as a church family can get to know the people in our community better.”

Registration is not required for the event, but Rockey encourages people to follow the event page on Facebook by searching for “Family Fall Festival” on the Glossbrenner United Methodist Church page and noting their interest so the organizers have an idea of how many people might attend.

“Even if you do not have children, come out and get some food,” Rockey encouraged. “We have music playing, and it is just a laid-back atmosphere. We would love to have you.”

Glossbrenner Church holds worship services on Sundays at 10 a.m., alternating weekly from traditional to contemporary services, followed by Sunday school for people of all ages at 11 a.m.

People who plan to attend the Family Fall Festival should park in the lower lot on Angle Street and walk over to the church’s upper lot on Water Street.

“We’ll have toys, glassware, books, stuffed animals, household items, baby items,” Emswiler noted. “We don’t have clothing, but we’ll have hats and linens. We’ll have some Christmas stuff.”

Free coffee and doughnuts will also be available during the event.

“We will also have at least three (giveaway) baskets,” she said. “The church is putting together a Christmas basket with things like wrapping paper, bows, baking items for Christmas cookies. Someone else donated a light-up birdhouse, so we’ll give that away. And you do not need to be present to win.”

Proceeds from the Fall Bazaar are used by the church to support various missions and activities.

“We have a prayer blanket ministry,” Emswiler shared. “We have a church member who makes blankets, and she prays over every knot that she puts in that blanket, and then the whole church will pray over the blanket. Then the blanket goes to someone who needs it who is in the hospital or sick or recently experienced a loss.”

She encourages everyone to come to the bazaar to hunt for a bargain. “Everything is priced to sell, and if you don’t like a price, make an offer,” she stated. “Starting at 1 p.m., most things will be marked down to half price.”

Fall Mums are Here!

Maytown Reformed Church holds worship services on Sundays at 10 a.m., both in person and on Zoom. Events like the bazaar help the church continue to operate even though the congregation is small.

“We are a small church, but we are mighty,” Emswiler said. “We have a wonderful pastor, and everyone is very inviting. They include everybody, and it’s just a comfortable church.”

will take place on Oct. 6 at 7 p.m., and the homecoming queen will be crowned during the event. The homecoming dance, with a theme of “Midnight in Paris,” will be held on Saturday, Oct. 7, beginning at 6 p.m.

Donations are still being accepted for the bazaar and will be taken through Monday, Oct. 16. To make a donation, call or text Emswiler at 717-468-6601.

What certain noises may indicate about your car

Automobiles have come a long way since their introduction more than 100 years ago. The cars of today

are technological marvels, which has made both driving and maintaining a vehicle simpler in certain ways. For

example, built-in diagnostic systems can now alert drivers when something is wrong with their car.

Although that feature is undeniably useful, drivers can still benefit from learning to recognize issues by ear. Many problems that can affect a car or truck produce unusual sounds, and learning what certain noises may indicate can help drivers detect problems as soon as possible.

- Rattling sound in a wheel well: Many people have mistakenly placed clothing in a dryer without realizing the clothing had spare change in the pockets. That mistake is immediately apparent once the dryer starts thanks to the unpleasant noise of coins bouncing off the interior of the machine. Drivers may hear a similar sound when behind one of their car’s wheels and wonder what’s behind it. Such a sound often indicates that there’s a loose lug nut inside the hubcap. This issue can arise when drivers don’t secure the wheel tightly after changing their own tire or if mechanics make the same mistake when

rotating or replacing tires during a routine maintenance session.

- Squeaking sound: The auto insurance experts at Geico note that rearwheel or four-wheel drive vehicles may produce a rhythmic squeaking sound when an issue arises with the universal joint. JD Power notes that the universal joint, often referred to as a U-joint, is part of the system that enables the rotating crankshaft in the engine of a vehicle to transfer that rotating motion to the rear wheels. Ujoints get a workout whenever vehicles are driven, so they require maintenance, and a squeaking sound is one indicator that the U-joint needs to be addressed immediately.

- Squealing sound: A high-pitched squealing sound typically means the vehicle’s brake pads are worn out. However, Cars.com notes that if such a sound is only present when a car is first driven in the morning, it could just be surface rust being scraped off

the rotors. After a few initial applications of the brakes, the sound might disappear. If it doesn’t, the vehicle will likely need new brake pads.

- Scraping on the windshield during rain: The scraping sound on a windshield when the wipers are in use should not be taken lightly or be interpreted as a sign that the rain is only falling lightly. In fact, that sound indicates the wipers are worn out, which means they’re not effectively clearing the windshield. In addition, the wipers could be scratching the windshield each time they produce this sound, ultimately necessitating a costly windshield replacement. Wiper blades can be replaced in a matter of minutes, so address this issue promptly.

Learning to recognize the sources of various vehicle noises can help drivers nip problems in the bud before they compromise the automobile and the safety of the people inside it.

Warning signs that brakes are faltering

Drivers play a vital role in vehicle maintenance. Although diagnosing and fixing car problems is often best left to professionals, drivers who learn to recognize warning signs of

various problems can prevent breakdowns and potentially costly repairs. Problems with the brake system are among the issues that drivers may learn to recognize.

Television shows and movies have lent credence to the notion that brake problems are marked by the sudden loss of a vehicle’s ability to stop. Although that can happen, warning signs of fading brake systems tend to be more subtle.

Certain noises are one of the signs that brakes may be failing. The most noticeable of these signs is a high-pitched squeal that occurs when drivers apply the brakes. Grinding sounds and noises like scratching and scraping also warrant a visit to a brake specialist.

Drivers may also notice an increase in the distance a vehicle travels before it stops after the brakes are applied. This issue may or may not require a brake replacement. In fact, it sometimes indicates that brake fluid levels are low, which can be remedied quickly and easily. However, an increase in stopping distance is significant enough that it should be brought to the attention of a brake specialist immediately.

Another warning sign of brake problems is that the vehicle noticeably pulls to one side as it comes to a stop. This behavior indicates that one side of the brakes is malfunctioning while the other is working properly. Like other issues with brakes, this one requires immediate attention from a professional.

Issues with brakes can be costly and dangerous, so it is important that drivers learn to recognize the warning signs of brake problems.

“Many of our students were not thriving in other placements,” she said. “They weren’t getting a lot of positive feedback, and the parents never heard things their child can do. We focus on strengths here. Children at The Janus School can feel seen, safe and valued.”

Dempsey noted that Goudie would appreciate the purpose of the 5K and Fall Fest. “This would be important to

her, because she valued community,” he said. “She’d be excited to see everyone come out for this. You can walk or run and then walk around and check out the Fall Fest activities. Come get to know a part of your town you maybe didn’t know existed before.”
