Thrive and Grit is just one of many area organizations supporting the fight against breast cancer. Here’s a sampling of some of the other local groups that are fighting back against the disease and supporting breast cancer patients and survivors:

Very loving, sweet, and always having fun - that’s how Jacquelyn Sauder Iannello describes her older sister Megan Sauder Ralston. With two and a half years between them in age, the sisters - who are the youngest daughters of John and Bonita Sauder of Lititz - grew up doing nearly everything together and had a friendship that strengthened into adulthood. Megan graduated from Lancaster Mennonite High School and went on to play Division I field hockey at Virginia Commonwealth University and earn a Master of Teaching in 2011. She taught first-grade in the Washington, D.C., area and married the love of her life, John Ralston, in 2013. In 2016, after finding a small lump in her breast about six months after giving birth to her son, Bryce, Megan - who was living in Charlottesville, Va., at the time and had no family history of breast cancer - made an OB-GYN appointment and was told by two doctors that the lump was a blocked milk duct. “She was nursing at the time, and the doctors said it was going to go away,” said Jacquelyn. “She was misdiagnosed.” Megan’s pain continued to increase to the point of being unable to lift her son. She returned to the doctor weeks later and was directed to a breast care clinic where she had a See Thrive And Grit pg 8

Megan was diagnosed with breast cancer at age 30, just nine months after giving birth to her son, Bryce (left), and passed away in 2018 at age 31.

The congregation of Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church, 85 E. Brandt Blvd., Landisville, is excited to host its first-ever Fall Harvest Bash on Saturday, Oct. 26, at 4:15 p.m. at the Lancaster Liederkranz pavilion, 722 S. Chiques Road, Manheim. “This was Pastor’s idea,” fellowship committee chair Millie Gundel said. “She wanted a bash, and not just a bash, a big bash.” Interim pastor Barbara Caruana has helped to organize similar events at the previous churches she has served, and she finds them a valuable aspect of congregational life. “Church is about being outside of here,” Caruana said, gesturing to Zion’s facility. “(It’s about) being neighborly and part of the community.” Jim and Kim Paternoster, who are part of the bash
planning committee, said that they see the event as serving two purposes: fellowship and letting the community know of Zion’s existence. The church is a quiet force in the community, serving meals every Thursday at 5:30 p.m. and hosting the Hempfield Area Food Pantry, which distributes groceries to those in need on Mondays and Wednesdays from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Zion also sponsors Cub Scout Pack 37, which meets at the church. Additionally, Zion hosts a monthly Kids’ Club, which runs from 5:30 to 7 p.m. on the first Wednesday of every month for elementary schoolage children. The gatherings begin with a free meal served to children and their families. Due to space limitations, however, the Fall Harvest Bash is unable to take place at Zion, so a church member who belongs to the Liederkranz suggested the nearby venue for
the event. “It’ll be a good time for all of us to get together and celebrate fall,” Gundel said. The Fall Harvest Bash will be held rain or shine. Dinner will be served at 4:45 p.m. The menu will include roast pork and grilled chicken, along with multiple sides, desserts, hot pretzels with horseradish mustard, and hot and cold beverages. In honor of the German heritage of the Lutheran denomination, live musical entertainment will be provided by the Heidelberg Brass Band and the Liederkranz’s Hobbychor. Dancing - including the polka, of course - and singing will commence at 5:45 p.m. Additionally, activities for children will be offered throughout the afternoon and evening. These will include pumpkin painting, hayrides, jar guessing games, and the challenge to eat apples and doughnuts suspended with strings without using any hands. Opportunities to make crafts will also be available, and a silent auction will be held during the bash.

soup, potato chips, mulled cider, and other beverages. Plenty of apple-based desserts will be available to purchase, too, such as dumplings, crisp, cakes, and pies. Apple cider making demonstrations led by Bainbridge resident Darl Williams will take place throughout the day, and visitors may sample the fresh, hot cider. A silent auction and apple giveaways will also be part of the festival. Children’s activities will include bobbing for apples, a coloring contest, flying disc throwing, and jumping rope, as well as a story time focused on Johnny Appleseed at 2 p.m. Guest speaker Dr. Iren Snavely of York County will offer a presentation titled “Young Sam Haldeman: The Making of an American Scientist.” Snavely retired as the rare books librarian at the State Library of Pennsylvania in 2018. He is a 1975 graduate of Geneva College and received his Master of Library Science from Drexel University in 1996. He also holds a Master of Arts in European history from Temple University and a doctorate in early modern European history from the University of Chicago. Snavely is a previous editor of The Journal of Religious & Theological Information and the author of numerous articles and reviews on the 16thcentury Reformation and early modern Europe. He has published articles on Pennsylvania religion, science, and historiography, profiling such important figures as Pennsylvania naturalists Alexander Wilson and Thomas Say and Pennsylvania
Gov. Samuel W. Pennypacker. “Sam Haldeman was very much self-taught, and it wasn’t because he didn’t get a good education,” said Snavely. He relayed the story of Haldeman - who was born at the mansion in 1812 attending Dickinson College for two years before dropping out. “He said, ‘I had to learn it for myself,’” Snavely said. “He was quite a good thinker and was a specialist in a lot of areas.” Snavely said that his talk will emphasize how Haldeman became the accomplished individual that he was. Haldeman’s accolades range from being a professor to corresponding with individuals like Charles Darwin and Noah Webster and publishing articles in what Snavely said were some of the most prominent journals of the time period. “I’d say he’s the most important central Pennsylvania scientist you’ve never heard of,” Snavely said with a laugh. Proceeds from Apple Festival will be put toward preserving and maintaining the mansion. For more details in HMPS, people may visit www.haldeman -mansion.org. 2017 and started Megan’s Fund at the Ann B. Barshinger Cancer Institute in Lancaster to financially support women under the age of 40 by helping to pay for mammograms, ultrasounds, genetic screening, early detection tools, and more. Jacquelyn noted that oftentimes insurance companies require women to be 40 years or older to qualify for assistance, and Thrive and Grit aims to fill that gap. On Nov. 13, 2018, Megan passed away at age 31. “Through everything she never lost faith. She had such strong faith, and that was her rock through everything,” said Jacquelyn, who is continuing the work of Thrive and Grit. Megan embodied kindness and had wanted to host a catered meal for the doctors and nurses at the Ann B. Barshinger Cancer Institute to thank them for the wonderful care she received. Her family and Thrive and Grit were able to make her idea a reality last December, and Jacquelyn hopes to repeat that event in the future.

mammogram, ultrasound, and biopsy completed within the week. She was diagnosed with a pregnancy-related breast cancer five days after her 30th birthday. Inspired by the sense of support she received from her community and other women battling cancer as she began undergoing treatment, Megan wanted to start an organization with the goal of creating awareness, donating toward research, and supporting others battling breast cancer. Megan and Jacquelyn established Thrive and Grit in 2017 with a mission of pushing people to thrive under extraordinary circumstances with grit and perseverance. “She really wanted other people to hear her story,” said Jacquelyn. “Just because you’re young doesn’t mean it can’t happen, and there definitely needs to be that awareness. Be your own advocate and push for testing if something isn’t right.” Thrive and Grit kicked off its efforts with a Pups in Pink event at Lancaster’s Buchanan Park in

Pink Packages are another signature effort of Thrive and Grit. Jacquelyn and other volunteers create and deliver uplifting boxes filled with gift cards for cleaning services and meal deliveries and other helpful items and goodies to assist women of all ages going through breast cancer treatment. “Sometimes you’re in there for hours and you just need something to eat or something encouraging,” noted Jacquelyn. Thrive and Grit also donates to metastatic (stage four) breast cancer research at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, a cutting-edge research hospital Megan traveled to. “She really wanted us to continue (Thrive and Grit), and it is healing to keep it going,” reflected Jacquelyn. “She wanted to help people and tell her story. If we can help just one person (by sharing Megan’s story), it’s worth it.” To learn more about supporting the mission of Thrive and Grit, readers may visit www.thriveandgrit.org.

Fullerton Inc.; Jeremy Spangler of Conestoga, plumbing, Haller Enterprises Inc.; and Brandon Thomas of Ronks, carpentry, Warfel Construction Company. The timed competition followed a similar format as the upcoming national competition, and apprentices were challenged to follow plans to craft projects that tested their skills, knowledge, and attention to safety. The competition has two components: the written test, which counts for 25% of the total score, and the practical hands-on competition, which counts for 75% of the total score. In addition to showcasing their top-quality work, the competitors must also adhere to strict safety standards. The Keystone Chapter’s Pennsylvania-registered apprenticeship program offers education in seven trades and focuses on hands-on training under the guidance of experienced instructors. Food Bank Receives Donation The Central Pennsylvania Food Bank recently announced that it is receiving a donation of $122,000 from Sheetz For the Kidz, a charitable organization driven by the employees of Sheetz Inc. to help provide hunger relief to children in central Pennsylvania. The funds will be used to support the transformation of the food bank’s youth programs. The Central Pennsylvania Food Bank helps to provide
127,000 meals annually to children in need through its network of local agency partners, including food pantries, soup kitchens and meal programs. The Central Pennsylvania Food Bank, a member of the Feeding America network, is one of 27 food banks to receive this funding from Sheetz For the Kidz. It is projected that this grant will enable the food bank to restructure its traditional backpack programs, which only serve the
child, into school pantry and mobile distribution programs, which will feed the whole family. As a regional convenience store, Sheetz is committed to helping to fight childhood hunger in the communities it serves. Through its Made-toShare program, Sheetz is rescuing food from its 588 stores and donating it to Feeding America member food banks located in its six-state footprint. To learn more about the

ensuing drive Donegal went 67 yards on six plays with Blake rumbling in from 13 yards out giving the Indians a 20-10 lead. Another long touchdown run courtesy of Williams pulled the Raiders to within three at 20-17, but Donegal, beginning from its own 44-yard line, put together a nine-play drive which took the Indians to the ELCO eight before Weaver’s pass was intercepted by Evan Huey in the end zone. ELCO capitalized on the big defensive play burning four minutes off the clock during an 89-yard drive that ended in a 28-yard scoring strike from Bohannon to Huey to put the Raiders up 24-20. A perfectly executed onside kick that bounced off a Donegal defender and was recovered by ELCO resulted in another sustained scoring drive that chewed up seven minutes and 52 yards and increased the lead to 31-20 with only 1:53 left to play. On their final possession of the game the Indians two-minute offense was put to a halt when Weaver was picked off for his second interception of the night allowing the Raiders to run out the clock and take the victory. With the loss, Donegal (5-1, 5-2) dropped out of sole possession of first place in Section Three and into a three-way tie with Lancaster Catholic (5-1, 6-1) and Lebanon (5-1, 5-2) both of which won on Friday night. “The kids have to have a short memory and move on to this week,” said Risberg when asked about the log jam at the top of the standings. “We need to fix the mistakes and get ready for Annville. Program Focuses On TCKs At Juniper Village of Mount Joy, residents gathered together to learn about the life of a third culture kid (TCK). By definition, TCKs are “people raised in a culture other than their parents’ or the country named on their passport for a significant part of their developmental years.” This term was first coined by researchers John and Ruth Useem in the 1950s, who used it to describe the children of American citizens who were living or working abroad. Grace Barton, one of Juniper Village’s Connections Associates, who is a TCK, led the discussion and shared her own ex periences of having grown up as a child of missionaries in Honduras, Central
America, until the age of 14, and then in Peru, South America, at the age of 17 and 19. On display for this discussion group were various souvenirs and items depicting some of the cultural arts and crafts from Central America. During this event, residents also shared their individual definitions of culture, particularly American and local culture as well as some of their own individual customs, traditions, arts, and music from their own life experiences. Juniper Village at Mount Joy is located at 607 Hearthstone Lane, Mount Joy. For more information, readers may call 717-272-8782 or visit www.junipercommunities.com.
