MJP Family Dental from pg 1 of Dentistry. Katz, who is a Philadelphia native, followed in his father’s footsteps and became the third generation of dentists in his family to graduate from Temple. “I was never actually interested in dentistry as a kid, but as I got older I wanted a profession that I could use to help others and work with my hands,” reflected Katz. Dentistry certainly fits those parameters, and today Katz is grateful to be in a position to help transform the lives of his patients through dentistry on a daily basis. Being able to care for people and take them out of excruciating pain is part of what makes being a dentist such a rewarding profession, Katz said. He believes dentistry can not only positively impact a person’s physical health but have a meaningful impact on his or her wellbeing and confidence as well. “Even just a simple aesthetics case can make a huge difference,” Katz remarked.

MJP Family Dental provides comprehensive care and services that include implants and restorations, endodontics (root canal treatments), orthodontics, crowns and veneers, extractions, white filling, nonsurgical periodontal therapy, nonmetallic flexible dentures, low-radiation digital X-rays, teeth whitening, oral cancer screening, and more. “We try to cover all the bases,” Katz stated. Same-day appointments and treatment for emergency situations and 24-hour oncall coverage are also offered. MJP Family Dental is open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Mondays and Tuesdays and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Wednesdays and Thursdays. Additional appointments may be available upon request on Fridays. The practice is accepting new patients. Most insurances are accepted. To schedule an appointment or learn more, readers may visit www.mjpfamilydental.com or call 717-653-2404.

Ice Cream Social from pg 1 The Mount Joy Chamber’s ice cream social will take place in front of the Chamber office, 62 E. Main St., Suite 1, Mount Joy, on Friday, Oct. 26, beginning at 5 p.m. In the event of inclement weather, everything will be set up in the office. Board members, along with friends of the Chamber Clair and Mary Ginder, will dish up ice cream and hand out snacks and water while supplies last. The ice cream social was originally scheduled to take place at the final Music in Memorial Park event in August. However, the event was rained out, and the band was too large to perform in the rain location. The ice cream social started when Mary Ginder was mayor of Mount Joy. The Mount Joy Chamber has continued the tradition, and Mary and Clair have continued

to help serve the ice cream. The Mount Joy Chamber of Commerce has approximately 210 members, consisting of businesses, nonprofits, churches, civic groups, and individuals. For more information on the Chamber, including how to join, readers may call the office at 717-6530773 or stop by on Tuesdays through Fridays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The Chamber, which was formed in 1939, is looking forward to celebrating its 80th anniversary in 2019. Pictured on front: The Mount Joy Chamber’s ice cream social, which was originally slated for August as part of the Music in Memorial Park program, has been rescheduled for Friday, Oct. 26, in front of the Chamber office.

Organizers hope to continue hosting a similarly styled service each quarter leading up to the anniversary. Pastor Matthew Randolph said that events are being planned for 2020 and 2021, including a Gaelic concert in April 2021, a formal birthday celebration in May 2021, and a Celtic festival in the fall of 2021. Donegal Presbyterian Church’s traditional weekly service takes place on Sundays at 9 a.m. followed by a fellowship time at 10 a.m. and Sunday school at 10:20 a.m. “The Back Door Church,” a contemporary service, is held from 11:15 a.m. to noon on Sundays. church sanctuary at 1891 Donegal Springs Road, Mount Joy. Anyone is welcome to attend. Michael Wills, who is part of the Project 300, the committee of folks who are planning events to honor the grand anniversary, said that the idea for the Celtic or vespers song service had been on the table for quite a while. “It seemed appropriate to use this as a kickoff for the anniversary celebrations,” Wills remarked. The theme for the Oct. 21 service will be “Resting in the Arms of God.” Wills explained that the service is designed to help attendees to put aside the cares of the world and rest in the arms of God. Traditional Celtic music that features a harpist, along with Scripture readings and responsive prayer, will be used to center on the theme.

Haunted Lantern Tour To Return With “Mortality Within” be decked out in period costumes that portray historical figures or ghastly spirits. “The people we get are really passionate about history,” emphasized Wright. Just as some of the actors travel from far and wide to make the event possible, so do those who regularly embark on Columbia’s Haunted Lantern Tour, which Mimnall said began in 2000. “Last year we had a bus trip from Maryland,” Wright recalled. This marks the second year that Mimnall and Wright are directing the tour together. The 2011 Columbia High School graduates have great memories of going on the tours in high school and later participating in the tour as actors for five years before stepping into their current leadership role. Putting the tour together is a yearlong process that entails writing a script, recruiting sponsors, cultivating actors, working with the Mount Bethel Cemetery board, and coordinating costumers, hair and makeup artists, and countless details and logistics - all of which Mimnall and Wright happily take on for the sake of telling the rich

story of their hometown. For more information on Columbia’s Haunted Lantern Tour, readers may visit www.face book.com/HLTMortalityWithin/ or https://columbiahlt.word press.com. Individuals who would

like to inquire about volunteering with the 2019 tour may call 717517-2442. In addition to actors, opportunities are available for folks to help next year with costumes, hair, makeup, technical work, and more.

Columbia’s Haunted Lantern Tour directors Sara Mimnall (left) and Rebecca Wright invite the community to take part in an hourlong guided tour that will explore the town’s history and haunted lore. Tours will be offered in the evening on Oct. 26 and 27.

Sewing Network Slates Meeting Lancaster Area Sewing Network will meet at 7 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 22, at the Lancaster Friends Meeting House, 117 Tulane Terrace, Lancaster. Rachel Siegel, a natural fiber enthusiast, will lead a program exploring the history of synthetics and semi-synthetics. Participants will learn how the focus of fabric development has shifted from cheaper alternatives to developing fabrics that have unique characteristics suitable for specific uses. Guests must pay a nominal fee at the door, but no registration is required. For further information, readers may contact Carrie Rhinier at 717-572-2093 or at careeare@comcast.net.

Sara Mimnall and Rebecca Wright chose the theme of “Mortality Within” for Columbia’s Haunted Lantern Tour this year because they wanted to introduce people to a not-often-talked-about aspect of the rivertown’s history. The theme will focus on the disease and poverty that struck Columbia and other communities in earlier days, discussing the presence of pesthouses and sanitariums and how much things have changed. “It shows how people suffered more than they had to because they didn’t have the advances in science and medicine like we do now,” noted Mimnall. “It will also touch on the Great Depression and how the lack of food (and resources) can change people,” Wright added. Popular characters from past years will also reappear, Wright said, such as William Campbell, a local trapper who died from rabies and is buried in Columbia’s historic Mount Bethel Cemetery. History abounds in the cemetery and the

town, and according to Mimnall and Wright, while spooky elements are intertwined on the tour, history is indeed the emphasis. The hourlong guided tours will take place on Friday and Saturday, Oct. 26 and 27, beginning at St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, 23 S. Sixth St., Columbia. Tours will step off every half hour beginning at 6:30 p.m., with the last tour starting at 9:30 p.m. Participants will follow guides to Locust Street and through a loop in the Mount Bethel Cemetery before returning to the church. Donegal Football Knocks Off Annville-Cleona by Vaughn Brown

Not too many people outside of the Donegal locker room picked the Indians to beat Annville-Cleona Friday night. Those people don’t suit up and play, either. On a chilly Homecoming night in front of a packed grandstand, the Indians used a steady diet of grind-itout football, along with a pair of Dylan Martin touchdown passes, to wear down the Dutchmen defense and score a 35-14 victory. With the win, Donegal (5-2, 5-3) pulled even with A-C as the two sat in third place of Section Three. “That was a huge win for our program,” said coach Chad Risberg. “The kids bounced back this week at practice after the overtime loss (at ELCO).” While Zion Gibbs (14-145, 2TD) led the rushing attack, it was an electrifying 65-yard touchdown pass from Martin (2-77, 2TD) to Jared Collazo (1-65, TD) on the opening play of the game that set the tone. Streaking down the A-C sideline, Collazo caught Martin’s dime in stride and out-raced all defenders for the early lead. From there, Donegal used five drives of 40 yards or more, with four resulting in touchdowns, and a bend but don’t break defense to stay in control the rest of the game. While they did give up 262 yards on the ground, the Donegal secondary held the Dutchmen to only six through the air with a timely interception in the end

zone at the end of the game, it’s second of the night. Annville-Cleona answered the Indians with a touchdown drive on their first possession of the game to make it 7-7, but after the resulting kickoff bounced out of bounds Donegal found itself on the 35-yard line. On the next play, Gibbs took a handoff and, finding a hole on the right side, sprinted 65 yards to the end zone only to have it called back due to a holding call on the Indians. It only delayed the inevitable, however, as Donegal’s three-headed attack of Gibbs, Jordan Minick (16-139, TD) and Dalton Mullhausen (10-37) spearheaded a 13-play, 65-yard drive that culminated in a one-yard plunge by Mullhausen to put the Indians back in the lead 14-7 with 1:16 to go in the first quarter. A-C’s success in the running game set up another touchdown which retied the game at 14-14 with 6:41 to go before the halftime, however on the ensuing Donegal possession the Indians marched 47-yards before Gibbs found pay-dirt from fouryards out. With that score, Donegal regained the lead at 21-14 and never looked back as Gibbs broke through the line on the third play of the next Donegal possession and scampered 72-yards for the score to make it 28-14 heading into the second half. Excluding three kneel-downs to end the game after the Indians

intercepted the Dutchmen in the end zone, Donegal possessed the ball just twice in the second half, but ran out the clock in the process. Leading 35-14 after Martin’s 11-yard scoring strike to Minick capped a nine-play 88-yard drive following a Gibbs interception on A-C’s first possession, the Indians forced a punt and then ground out 41 yards on 14 plays before turning the ball over on downs. “We finally put together a four-quarter game,” added Risberg. “That is something that we have been emphasizing to the kids. We gave up some yards on the ground, but ultimately it’s the score that matters.” CROSS COUNTRY In an 11 meet regular season it all came down to the final matchup with Manheim Central to determine who would win the Section Two girls’ cross country title. With both squads entering the meet last Tuesday at Donegal undefeated, it looked to be an exciting finish to the season. The two teams did not disappoint as the lady Indians claimed their second title in four years with a nail-biting 28-30 victory over the Barons as well as a 15-49 win over Garden Spot to maintain the perfect record. “The girls ran remarkable all season, finishing the year an undefeated 11-0 against all Section II teams in the Lancaster Lebanon League,” commented head coach Matthew Werner. “They have battled

through injuries and have yet to run together as a complete squad at an invitational. That hasn’t stopped them from placing third as a team at the Quad XC Invitational in Philly in earlySeptember and first at the Bulldog Invitational in mid-September.” Manheim’s Olivia and Mallory Sunderland placed first and second overall finishing in 21:26 and 21:47, respectively while Rachel Fernald (3rd, 21:54) and Hadley Shoaf (4th, 21:59) led the Indians, but it was the efforts of Donegal’s final pack of runners that sealed the victory. Amanda Fry (6th, 22:45), Myra Naqvi (7th, 22:53), and Ella DeBruin (8th, 23:09) were sandwiched by Manheim’s Marianne Fitzkee (5th, 22:31), and Bella Reber (10th, 23:54) which made it 17-28 in favor of the Barons with Donegal’s hopes hanging on displacement. Their achievement was realized when Meg Zell (12th, 24:14), McKenzie DuBuskey (13th, Photo by Vaughn Brown 24:26), and Keri Anderson (14th, Donegal’s Matt Jackson kicks one of his five extra points out of 24:35) crossed the line before Dylan Martin’s hold during the Indians’ 35-14 Homecoming win Manheim’s Erin Hoffman (16th, 25:16) over Annville-Cleona last Friday. to secure the title win. “The girls have lived by the saying “The strength of the wolf is the pack” this season and it was true, as we had eight of our 11 girls score points for us this season,” said Werner. “In addition, five of our girls finished as AllCounty All-Stars this year.” Those include sophomore Rachel Fernald and freshman Hadley Shoaf as first

The Donegal girls cross country team defeated Manheim Central, 28-30, last Tuesday to clinch its second Section Two title in the last four seasons. Members of the team are: (from left), Amanda Fry, Keri Anderson, Meg Zell, Sarah Hinkel, Rachel Fernald, Ella DeBruin, McKenzie Dubusky, Hadley Shoaf, Jordyn Smith, Myra Naqvi and Megan Myers.

team all stars and sophomores Amanda Fry, Myra Naqvi and Junior Ella DeBruin as second team all stars. Jordyn Smith (18th, 26:45), Sarah Hinkel (19th, 26:53), and Megan Myers (21st, 27:35) rounded out the

field for the Indians. Also having a good season are the boys who ended with a 22-33 loss to the Barons but defeated the Spartans 25-33. While they finished with a winning record, Donegal (7-4) ended in a

four-way tie for second place with Lancaster Catholic, Cocalico, and ELCO with Lampeter-Strasburg (10-1) and Manheim Central tied for first in Section Two. Logan Fry finished fourth overall with a time of 19:20 and Matthew Wallace placed sixth in 19:42, but it was the efforts of Brandon Hess (9th, 20:17) and Hunter Gehman (10th, 20:21) that provided the Indians with what they needed to pull out the victory over Garden Spot. Sam Rothstein (14th, 20:28) acted as the fifth and final scoring runner for the home team. Donovan Espenshade (11th, 20:25) and Finn Wenrich (12th, 20:26) were edged out by Gehman by respective margins of four and five seconds which added to the three points provided by Hess and accounted for a

four-point turnaround that could have potentially given the Spartans a 29-30 win had Espenshade and Wenrich finished before the Donegal duo. Also finishing were Ethan Steck (16th, 21:03), Aydan Miller (17th, 21:10), Andrew Allen (21st, 22:06), and Nathaniel Jenney (26th, 24:35). SOCCER Donegal’s soccer teams have both struggled over the course of the season with the boys finishing at 5-5, 8-10 after a 4-2 win over Solanco last Tuesday while the girls ended up at 3-4-1, 4-9-2 with a 1-0 loss to the Mares on Thursday. Neither team qualified for the League tournament. In a game where the score was tied 2-2 at halftime, the boys shut down the home team’s offense completely while scoring twice more for the win. Donegal outshot Solanco 15-12 and held a 5-3 advantage in corners. Philip Herzog scored twice and both Kyler Enck and Patrick Summers scored once for the margin of victory. Gavin Murren played strong in net for the Indians as well, stopping 10 shots on goal. It wasn’t until Kayden Bedwell found a way past Lauren Stwalley in the 58th minute to break a scoreless tie that the girl’s game, rescheduled due to rainouts, was decided on Thursday in Quarryville. With only five shots on goal to the Mare’s nine Donegal found it difficult to generate anything offensively but in turn also stifled Solanco with good defensive pressure throughout the game. Stwalley turned away eight shots on goal for the night. On Tuesday, the girls’ again faced Solanco and came away with a 2-1 victory with all goals being scored in the opening half. FIELD HOCKEY Mackenzie Allessie, Ruby Hartley, Cayla Homsher, Aliza Johns, Amber Lookenbill, Catherine Moran, and Lily Saunders were all honored before the start of last Monday’s contest with

McCaskey as the seven players prepared to take the field on Senior Night. Six of the seven recorded goals with Johns the only one who did not, but that can be overlooked as she spent the season as Donegal’s stalwart in the cage. With the 17-0 win the lady Indians (14-0, 18-0) also clinched the Section Two championship, their third straight, while Allessie’s six goals pulled her within 16 of the U.S. scoring record. Saunders added three, Moran and Hartley each scored two while Lookenbill and Homsher added one apiece to wrap up their regular season careers at home. Kiera Baughman also scored twice in the win. Two more games remained for the

week and the ladies recorded two more shutouts with an 8-0 win over Garden Spot last Wednesday and a 13-0 shellacking of Elizabethtown. Lauren Delgado turned away 12 for the Spartans but it was not enough as Allessie scored five and Saunders, Baughman, and Emma Miller each scored once. Lydia Miller, Homsher, Emma Miller, and Madison Kaley scored one goal each on Thursday against Elizabethtown along with Allessie’s nine. That brought her career total to 326, only two shy of the national record which as of this writing most assuredly belongs to the Indian sharp shooter.
