Family fun at a Fall Festival BY CATHY MOLITORIS

When GEARS hosts the 13th annual Fall Festival, it will be an opportunity for people to enjoy family fun from a community collaboration. The event will be held on Saturday, Oct. 21, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Elizabethtown Fairgrounds, 900 E. High St.

“We are again partnering with E-town College and the E-town Middle School Student Council,” said Lee Eckert, program coordinator for GEARS. Elizabethtown College will participate with its 30th annual “Falling Into the Streets” initiative, which encourages community involvement for students. Their activities will See Fall Festival pg 3

Halloween entertainment at Dog Park Mount Joy BY CATHY MOLITORIS

n Sunday, Oct. 22, Rapho Township Community Park will go to the dogs - in the cutest way possible. Dog Park Mount Joy will host a Halloween Parade from 1 to 3 p.m. at the park, 960 Strickler Road, Mount Joy, and all pups are invited. “We had done this before, but it lapsed during COVID,” said Debbie Ronning, who is helping to organize the event. “People were asking if we were going to do it again, because it was popular, so we decided we would.” Although the event is organized by the members-only Dog Park Mount Joy, it is open to anyone in the community. Dogs (and their owners) are encouraged to come in costume, and prizes will be awarded for first, second and third places. The festivities will include a photo booth, handmade dog treats and more. Dog Park Mount Joy apparel, including T-shirts, sweatshirts and bandanas, will be

“It’s fun for the dogs, and it’s fun for the dog parents.” about 450 to 500 members a year, said member Russ Woodling, and members come from a wide distance. “ We have people come from Dauphin, Lebanon and York counties,” he said. “We actually have members in Virginia, North Carolina and Florida, who split time between two homes. We also have members who live out of town, but they have relatives that live in this area, and they enjoy the dog park so much that when they come to visit family, they bring their dogs here.”

The park is divided into two areas - a 1-acre space for small dogs, and a 1.5-acre space for big dogs. Events like the Halloween Parade help spread the word about the dog park and promote community fun, Ronning said. “We have had great turnouts for the parade in the past, and we had some fabulous costumes,” she recalled. “ We had a dog named Wrigley, and his mom made a Wrigley chewing gum costume for the dog. People get very creative. It’s just a fun day. It’s fun for the dogs, and it’s fun for the dog parents.” Dog Park Mount Joy will also offer holiday photos for people and their dogs on Saturday, Dec. 9, from noon to 3 p.m. at the dog park. The photo shoot will feature a truck decorated for Christmas, and photos will be taken by donation. Registration is not necessary for the Halloween Parade, and the event will be held rain or shine. For more information on Dog Park Mount Joy, search for the organization on Facebook.

Pumpkin painting will be among the activities at the GEARS Fall Festival.

Providing support for pregnancy loss BY CATHY MOLITORIS

The loss of a baby affects a family for a lifetime, and care and support are needed well beyond the immediate time of loss. People who provide that care, whether in a professional or personal capacity, can benefit from attending “A Journey of a Lifetime,” an in-person perinatal conference sponsored by Share of Lancaster. The conference will be held on Saturday, Oct. 28, from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. at the Holiday Inn, 26 E. Chestnut St.,

Lancaster. It will present information for people in the medical field as well as therapists and others who have touched the lives of families that have lost a baby. “It’s been a while since Share had an in-person conference like this one,” said Dr. Serena Wu, who is a maternal fetal medicine physician at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) and the executive director of Share. “To have a conference that is pulling in nationally recognized speakers on this subject matter is unique.” See Support pg 2

explained. A variety of panels will be featured, led by experts in the field. The conference is open to anyone who provides care or is affected by pregnancy loss, she noted, adding that it also provides continuing education credit for healthcare workers. “Part of Share of Lancaster’s mission is education and to bring awareness,” Wu said. “October is Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness Month, so it’s timed with that. The theme is ‘Past, Present and Future’: Where have we been? Where are we now, and where are we going?” Founded more than 40 years ago by a bereaved mother in Lancaster and two nurses, Share of Lancaster helps parents and families deal with the death of an infant from miscarriage, pregnancy complications, stillbirth, SIDS or other causes. “We want people to know they aren’t alone,” said Wu. “A lot of times, people will say, ‘Until I started talking about it, I didn’t realize other people had experienced this as well.’” Share will host the Share of Lancaster Walk 2023 the day after the conference, Sunday, Oct. 29, at the Lancaster Barnstormers’ stadium, 650 N. Prince St., Lancaster. It will run from 5 to 7 p.m. “This is our annual remembrance event,” Wu said. “It’s a memorial service, but it’s not sad. It’s a way to remember our babies and spend time together. We have readings of writings submitted by Share members. We show a video presentation, and we call out every baby’s name. We also light candles near dusk, and that will light up the stadium.” Registration is free for the walk. The registration deadline is Friday, Oct. 20. This year’s parade has a theme of “Wide World of Sports” and will feature more than 50 units in five divisions. “We have a lot of local groups participating, like the Scouts and lots of school groups,” John said. “We’ll have bands and floats.” Judges will circulate throughout the parade, reviewing entries to award cash prizes. “We have them walk through the parade so that way the spectators can see the groups performing anywhere along the parade route, not just at a judges’ stand at the end,” he explained. The parade is a true community event, he noted, drawing not only a large number of participants but a large crowd of spectactors as well. “It’s a fun time. There’s candy being thrown, and it’s just a fun opportunity to get out and enjoy yourself,” John said. “We expect a big crowd for this. Trunk or Treat in Leola planned BY ANN MEAD ASH

“Last year’s Trunk or Treat was well attended,” said Adriana Witman, school-age program administrator with Steps to Success, a Christian preschool and day care service with locations in Leola and Mount Joy. Witman noted that the 2022 program attracted more people than the initial Trunk or Treat held in 2021. As in the past, the event will be held in partnership with Zion Lutheran Church, located at 18 Quarry Road, Leola, on Saturday, Oct. 21, from 4 to 7 p.m. Witman and Jenna Dixon, Fritz Elementary School Steps to Success site director, will organize the Trunk or Treat. The Trunk or Treat will feature a number of decorated trunks offering candy in the church parking lot. “We will have anything from Barbie to Disney (trunk themes),” said Witman, who noted that in 2022, 20 trunks were featured, but that the park-

ing lot can accommodate up to 40 vehicles. This year, in addition to free hot dogs and s’mores, made by members of local Boy Scout Troops 82 and 83, who will tend the fire pits, the Fish, Bread & Chicken food truck will be on site. In addition to decorated trunks, candy, and food, Witman said organizers hope to have yard games such as cornhole and a cotton candy machine. Witman also hopes to be holding the Steps to Success Scholastic book fair during the event so attendees can shop Trunks decorated with a variety of themes were part of the 2022 for books at the Steps to Success Trunk or Treat.
