Town Talk To Explore Marietta Cemetery By Chelsea Peifer
The Marietta Town Talk series will continue on Sunday, Oct. 28, with “History in Repose,” a cemetery tour led by historian James Landis. The community is invited to meet at the Fairview Avenue entrance to the Marietta Cemetery for a lively tour of the property. Admission is free. In the case of rain, the event will take place indoors at the Marietta Community House, 264 W. Market St., Marietta. “This is going to be about real, authentic history, focusing on some of the people that are buried in the cemetery and stories that are going to be entertaining,” explained Landis, emphasizing that it will not be a ghost tour. Landis published “The Cemeteries of Marietta, PA,” an inventory of all of Marietta’s cemeteries in 2012, in conjunction with the bicentennial of the founding of the borough. The book has more than 600 pages with detailed records of the cemeteries in Marietta. “The
bicentennial was what piqued my interest for Marietta,” Landis commented. “Marietta is a very interesting place, and the cemetery is just one aspect of that.” According to Landis, the eight-acre property of the Marietta Cemetery is home to approximately 4,800 marked graves. While at one time a register existed for the cemetery, Landis said the story goes that the records disappeared never to be seen again after a fight between individuals in the borough many years ago. Thanks to Landis’ research, folks seeking information on those buried in the grounds may now refer to the complete inventory in his book. Copies are available to view in the Marietta Borough Office, 11 E. Market St.; at Marietta Restoration Associates, 3 W. Walnut St.; and at several local historical societies. “One really special aspect of the cemetery is the number of veterans that are buried there,” stated Landis. “Marietta has a very long tradition of its residents serving in the military.” See Town Talk pg 12
Historian James Landis will lead a walking tour of the Marietta Cemetery for the next Marietta Town Talk on Oct. 28. Landis will discuss the people buried there and various aspects of the property , including a mausoleum with stained glass (pictured) that often catches the attention of passersby.

A local church called The Miracle Center recently purchased the building at 732 W. Main St., Mount Joy, on Sept. 28. The building was formerly Simp-Lee Seafood. In July 2017, the church, then located in Columbia, launched a one-year, $50,000 building campaign when it was notified it could not renew the lease on the location it had at the time. The Columbia Lions Club and Sunsnappers have announced that Vincent B. and Mary C. Wickenheiser will serve as grand marshals for the 72nd annual Mardi Gras/Halloween Parade on Thursday, Oct. 25. The parade will form at 10th and Manor streets and step off at 7 p.m. It will proceed along the traditional 1.5-mile route, which includes sections of Manor, Fourth, Union, Locust and Sixth streets. The Wickenheisers will ride in a horse-drawn carriage at the front of the parade. Vincent “Vinnie” and Mary are lifelong residents of Columbia and celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in 2017. They have been actively involved in the community for many years. Most notably, they have each served 15 years on the Columbia River Park Advisory Committee, which has been instrumental in the expansion and revitalization of Columbia’s river front. The committee’s accomplishments include development of the Columbia Crossing River Trails Center, a new boating access ramp, a canoe and kayak launch site, a picnic pavilion, an expanded parking area, floating docks and shoreline fishing access. They are actively involved in planning for the next phase of the River Park expansion, which will include 11 acres to the north of the Veterans Memorial Bridge. In addition, the Wickenheisers are members of the Columbia Park Rangers and the Safe Harbor Citizens Information Advisory Committee. They also volunteer at the Susquehanna Valley Chamber of Commerce
Visitors Center and Columbia Crossing River Trails Center. Vinnie served in the United States Navy during the Vietnam War era. He has been active in the Boy Scouts of America for more than 60 years. He is also a volunteer boating safety instructor for the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission and a member of the Train Collectors of America Museum Committee. Mary has served on numerous volunteer boards and committees, including Columbia Borough Council, Rivertownes PA USA, and the Northwest Lancaster County River Trail Steering Committee and Advisory Board. She is currently chairwoman of the Columbia Borough Planning Commission and chairwoman of the Lancaster County Solid Waste Management Citizen Advisory Committee. She is also a member of the Columbia Youth Aid Panel. The Wickenheisers are members of Holy Trinity Catholic Church, where they volunteer with the annual fastnacht bake. Mary serves as a lector. Vinnie is a member of the men’s club. He also volunteers as a pallbearer for the Knights of Columbus. They have a daughter, Susan, married to Steve Ness of Columbia, and a son Mark, married to Christine of Monroe County. They have seven grandchildren. The parade theme is “Story Time” in honor of the newly expanded Columbia Public Library. The parade will feature five divisions with at least one band in each division. The procession will also include high school

The Columbia Lions Club and Sunsnappers, represented by Paul Resch (left), John Meshey (second from right), and John Grunden (far right), have announced that Mary (second from left) and Vincent Wickenheiser (center) will serve as grand marshals for the annual Mardi Gras/Halloween Parade in Columbia on Oct. 25. marching bands, emergency response units, baton twirlers, scout troops, fire companies, floats, walking groups, and a steam calliope as the final entry. The Columbia Lions Club and Sunsnappers will award cash prizes to the top three winners in various categories, including baton groups, floats, walking groups, and individuals. John Grunden, Lions Club treasurer, explained that judges are anonymous and roam the parade route to rate contestants on their overall appearance and performance. This helps to ensure that
parade viewers get a fair representation of what each unit has to offer, including components that might have been missed along the route if the entrants were to save their best performance for a specific reviewing area. Nonprofit organizations will sell food along the parade route. In the case of rain, the parade will take place on Monday, Oct. 29. For details or to register to march in the parade, readers may call Cheryl or John Grunden at 717-684-2714.

entertainment, including children’s games, face painting, skits, snacks, and a hayride. For more information, readers may contact Diane at 717-665-2631 or Veronica at 717-664-2990.
The Rotary Club of Mount Joy invites the community to join in the fight against polio during Pints for Polio. According to Rotary representatives, polio is endemic in just three countries. There is no cure, and the disease is only prevented by vaccine. Donations made through the event will provide disease-preventing vaccines to children in at-risk countries. Community members can get involved by visiting the participating Mount Joy businesses, which will donate a portion of food and/or beverage sales to the cause. The schedule is as follows: Tuesday, Oct. 30, from 5 to 8 p.m. at Rosie’s Tavola, 114 E. Main St., with Rotarian Dave Christian selecting a beverage to serve and working for tips to be donated; Thursday, Nov. 1, from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. at Harvey’s
Used Gardening Items Needed The Penn State Master Gardeners of Lancaster County are seeking gently used gardening items. The items will be sold at their annual plant sale, which is scheduled for May 2019. Donors may bring items on Saturday, Oct. 27, from 9 a.m. to noon at Lancaster Farm and Home Center, 1383 Arcadia Road, Lancaster. Tools, birdfeeders, birdhouses,
containers, patio items, wind chimes, and any usable item with a garden connection will be considered. Proceeds will benefit Master Gardener programs held throughout the county. Arrangements for pickup at other times may be made by contacting 717575-1192 or lancastergardenshed @gmail.com.
Main Street BBQ, 304 E. Main St.; Nov. 1 from 4 to 8 p.m. at Twisted Bine, 93 E. Main St.; and Monday, Nov. 5, from 5 to 8 p.m. at Bube’s Brewery, 102 N. Market St. Those planning to attend at Bube’s must purchase a ticket for a beverage at Bube’s or from a Rotarian. With the exception of Bube’s, participants will need to show an event flyer to have a portion of their bill donated to the cause. Flyers will be available from Rotarians, at the restaurants, or on the Mount Joy Rotary Club’s Facebook page. For more details and pictures, readers may visit the Mount Joy Rotary Club’s Facebook page. Individuals who are interested in being a guest at a Rotary Club meeting may call Mark Rorabaugh at 717-653-4717.
Inviting the community to join the fight against polio by taking part in the Rotary Club of Mount Joy’s Pints for Polio fundraiser are (from left) Greg Sallade, Mark Rorabaugh, Jack Garner, Dave Christian, Chris Silvestri, Ron Carper, Randy Wolgemuth, and Joanne Pinkerton. The fundraiser will take place at various local eateries on select dates from Oct. 30 to Nov. 5.

The Lancaster County native has contributed funds for the past eight years through his Lancaster County Community Foundation donor-designated fund to benefit the public libraries in Lancaster County. The only stipulation by Rutter is that the funds he donates be used to support technology-based services that will benefit many library users throughout the county. National Philanthropy Day is observed by the Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP) to celebrate the contributions of those who are active in the philanthropic community. First held by AFP in 1986, National Philanthropy Day is now recognized by more than 250 AFP chapters across North American and internationally. Ann Myers from the Partnership for Better Health and Mary Beth Kerekes from the National Civil War Museum co-chaired the celebration on Sept. 26 to honor four people as AFP Central Pennsylvania Chapter’s National Philanthropy Day 2018 awardees. Each winner received a framed print of the Rockville Bridge painting by David Lenker. Marion Mort, age 102, was named Philanthropist of the Year. The honor recognizes an individual with a proven record of exceptional generosity who, through direct financial support, demonstrates outstanding civic and charitable responsibility and whose generosity encourages others to take philanthropic roles in the community. The Silent Samaritan Luncheon is a fundraiser for the Silent Samaritan Fund, which provides counseling and other services to women who do not have adequate funds to cover the cost, and the Silent Samaritan Endowment, a permanent fund started in 2015 in the names of Silent Samaritan Fund founders Linda Peacock and Alta Landis. The 2018 luncheon will be held at a new location, Calvary Church, 1051 Landis Valley Road, Lancaster. The luncheon has also been scheduled earlier in the month of November than in the past. This year’s event will be held on Monday, Nov. 12, beginning at 11 a.m., and will feature two local women, Manheim Township High School graduate Abby Stewart and her mother, Carol Reichler. The luncheon is open only to women. Stewart and Reichler’s message is titled “The Power of Individuality and Unconditional Love.” The program will focus on the struggles Stewart encountered as a teenager and how she and her mother persevered together. The Silent Samaritan Fund has given more than $1 million to aid area women.

Indians Denied in L-L League Championship
by Vaughn Brown
When two powerhouse programs clash, it is usually a sight to behold and Saturday’s L-L League championship field hockey match between Donegal and Penn Manor did not disappoint. With no time on the clock, Penn Manor’s Anna May Barbusca collected the rebound of Bri Harsh’s shot on the final penalty corner of overtime and sent it home for the 1-0 victory. Donegal came inches away from winning in the moments leading up to Barbusca’s game ending shot when Mackenzie
Allessie took a corner insertion and fired a ricochet off the left post. Penn Manor picked up the loose ball and quickly transitioned to Donegal’s end, eventually ending the game. Both teams traded fast breaks and scoring opportunities throughout the day, but it was just not meant to be for the Indians. While Aliza Johns played a great game in the cage for Donegal in turning away five Penn Manor shots, it was the Comet’s Cecily Charles and her 10 saves that put them in a position to win. Johns and Donegal’s defense did a good job of stifling

the Comets who earned 20 penalty corners to the Indian’s nine, however the Comet’s back half rose to the occasion and shut down the potent Donegal offense. “We played great, just needed to finish,” observed head coach Jessica Shellenberger. “(Saturday’s) game was unfortunate, we are looking forward to districts.” In reaching Saturday’s finals, Donegal first had to handle Annville-Cleona in the quarterfinals, which was accomplished via a 9-0 shutout. With that win the lady Indians
faced off against Manheim Township in the semi finals where they handed the Streaks a 5-1 defeat. Last Tuesday’s win over the Dutchmen was not only Donegal’s ticket to the semifinals, but marked a major milestone for Allessie as well. With her five goals, the senior brought her career total to 331 which set a new national high school record for goals scored. The previous record was held by Austin Cuneo of New Jersey who ended with 328 in her high school career.

Donegal’s Hadley Shoaf, left, was the Indians’ second girl to cross the finish line, placing 25th overall, while Logan Fry paced the Indian boys with a 76th-place finish at last Tuesday’s LancasterLebanon League Cross Country Championships at Ephrata Middle School.

Allessie broke the record on her third goal of the night, but you would not have known had the game not been paused to honor her achievement as the senior casually trotted back to mid-field. Donegal went up 6-0 in the first half on Allessie’s hat-trick as well as two by Lily Saunders and one by Lydia Miller. Emma Miller found the back of the cage 12:57 into the second half, increasing the lead to 7-0 before Allessie finished with two more. Jumping out to an early 3-0 lead Thursday night against Manheim Township on a goal by Cayla Homsher 2:42 into the match and two by Catherine Moran (5:37, 8:10), Donegal easily handled the Blue Streaks who only earned one corner and one shot on goal. With the victory, coach Shellenberger also notched a career milestone as she earned win number 300. Sophia Rockwell made the most of Manheim Township’s lone corner when she took the insertion from Kate Labezious and fired a rocket into the right corner of the cage to make it 3-1 at halftime. Lily Saunders scored twice in the second half for the final two goals of the match. FOOTBALL Section Three heavyweight Lancaster Catholic came to town Friday night and Donegal stood toe-to-toe trading blows through the first half in which the Indians headed into the locker room with a 14-13 Photo by Deb Grove lead. That turned out to be all that Donegal scored as the Crusaders completely dominated the clock in the second half and added nine unanswered points in a 22-14 loss for the home team. Donegal’s normally potent rushing attack was held in check as the Indians were held to 98 yards on the ground and 174 total for the night. Zion Gibbs led the team with 63 yards on 16 carries and accounted for both touchdowns as well. “They are a tough team,” commented head coach Chad Risberg. “They are big up front and in the second half they just wore us down.” Gibbs’ first came on the tail end of an opening drive by the Indians that went 77 yards on 11 plays which included a crucial pass interference call against Lancaster Catholic on third-and-eight that gave the Indians firstand-goal on the nine-yard line. Two plays later he punched it in from 5yards out to give Donegal a 7-0 lead following Matthew Jackson’s PAT. Lancaster Catholic responded with a 65-yard scoring drive that tied the game at 7-7 when Jeff Harley (12-67, 2TD) broke free up the left sideline for a 24-yard touchdown. After holding the Indians to four-and-out, the Crusaders struck again on their next possession when Gavin Sullivan connected with Luke Miller on a 33-yard touchdown pass that made it 13-7 with 1:36 remaining in the first quarter following the missed kick. Donegal responded with a 45-yard kick return by Gibbs that set the Indians up at the Crusader 45 and proceeded to burn 5:41 off the clock on a 13play drive that saw them convert four times on third down including a nine-yard pass from Dylan Martin (7-11, 76 yards) to Jordan Minick (1-9) on third-and-eight. Minick added 18 yards rushing on 10 carries for the night along with Dalton Mullhausen (2-7) and Martin (5-10). It was the second half, however, that proved to be the difference maker as the Crusaders completely controlled the line-of-scrimmage and took up almost 18 minutes of playing time. “We couldn’t get off the field on third and fourth down in the second half,” said Risberg. “They had two long drives in the second half that chewed up a lot of clock.” Despite only gaining 26 yards of offense in the second half, Donegal still had a chance in the final minutes to tie the game. Harley put the Crusaders back in front when he scored from two-yards out to cap a 54-yard drive. A failed two-point conversion made the score 19-14 with nine minutes left in the third quarter. Facing fourth-and-21 on their next possession, Donegal was forced to punt the ball away and though Lancaster Catholic started at its own eight-yard line the Crusaders were able to march down to the Indian 25-yard line where a Photo by Deb Grove Donegal’s Jordan Minick catches a pass in front of Lancaster Daniel Mueller field goal made it 22-14. On its final possession, Donegal worked down to the Crusader 34-yard line and a Catholic defender Luke Miller during last Friday’s Section Three fourth-and-four situation. Martin dropped back to pass and tried to find a receiver showdown in Mount Joy. on the sideline but the pass went out of bounds to end the game. “I am proud of the way our kids played. They played their hearts out,” added Risberg. CROSS COUNTRY Fresh off a Section Two championship, the Donegal girls ran for an eighth place finish with 206 points in the Lancaster-Lebanon League meet last Tuesday at Ephrata Middle School while the boys placed 21st with 527. Rachel Fernald led with an overall finish of 22nd in 20:41.1 while Logan Fry finished 76th overall with an 18:33.8. Hadley Shoaf (25th, 20:50), Myra Naqvi (47th, 21:48.7), Amanda Fry (52nd, 21:58.7), and Ella DeBruin (60th, 22:17.4) accounted for the remaining 184 team points for the girls followed by McKenzie DuBusky (67th, 22:25.6), Keri Anderson (74th, 22:40.7), and Meg Zell (88th, 23:19.2). Meanwhile, Matt Wallace (102nd, 18:59.8), Hunter Gehman (112th, 19:14.3), Brandon Hess (130th, 19:49.3), and Sam Rothstein Photo by Deb Grove (140th, 20:06.8) all scored for the Indians AJ McCarty (53), Connor Ruhl (64) and Dalton Mullhausen (24) team up to make the tackle boys with Ethan Steck (141st, 20:08.8) and Andrew Allen (151st, on Lancaster Catholic’s Malkam Lawrence during a Section Three clash at Donegal last Friday. 20:30.5) rounding out the field.

The board of Mennonite Economic Development Associates (MEDA) announced the appointment of Dr. Dorothy Nyambi as the organization’s next chief executive officer and president. She will succeed Allan Sauder, who is retiring from a role which he has held for the past 16 years. Nyambi is a dual citizen of Canada and Cameroon and is bilingual, speaking both English and French. Nyambi has work experience in Africa,
Town Talk from pg 1 “There are just all sorts of stories, Landis continued. “The history of the cemetery is a bit more complicated than you might think, and it actually incorporates two properties. A portion of land adjacent to the northwest corner of the Marietta Cemetery that Landis said is often mistaken as being part of the cemetery is actually under different ownership. At one time, that portion of the grounds belonged to the Wesley African Methodist Episcopal (AME) Zion Church and had a church and school building along with several gravesites. Landis will also talk about the large mausoleum in the cemetery that often catches people’s attention. Though the date it was built remains unknown, Landis said that it belonged to Dr. and Mrs. Grove, who were great benefactors of Marietta. Dr. Grove was a local physician in Marietta before moving to Philadelphia. Landis speculates he gained the inspiration for
Asia, Middle East, Eastern Europe, Latin America, Caribbean, and North America. She began her career as a medical doctor before moving into the field of international development. Nyambi and her husband currently live in Ancaster, Ontario, Canada. Her official start date is Monday, Nov. 26. She will be introduced publicly at the convention in Indianapolis from Thursday, Nov. 8, through Sunday, Nov. 11. Nyambi will work closely with Sauder through a period of transition to Friday, Dec. 14. For more information, readers may visit www.meda.org or contact Linda Whitmore at 226-499-8993 or lwhitmore@meda.org.

The Second Mountain Hawk Watch observation area will officially be open from Aug. 15 to Saturday, Dec. 15, coinciding with the official migratory bird watching season. As in the past, the site will be open dawn until dusk and is only to be used to count migratory raptors. The site will be closed to foot and vehicle traffic during the offseason. The observation area for Second Mountain
Hawk Watch is located adjacent to and on Fort Indiantown Gap ranges where troops train and bivouac. Second Mountain Hawk Watch was established in 1984 in collaboration with partners to assist birders with environmental stewardship. The partnership between Second Mountain Hawk Watch and Fort Indiantown Gap has been in place for more than 34 years. Individuals who would like to assist Second Mountain Hawk Watch with counting migratory birds may contact president David Schwenk at 717-533-2814. The organization’s website is https://2ndmtn.shutter fly.com.
The Second Mountain Hawk Watch observation area offers a clear view for birders to count migratory birds. The area, which opened for the season on Aug. 15, will officially remain open through Dec. 15 and is to be used to count migratory raptors.

Blood Pressure Kiosk Installed The American Heart Association recently dedicated a second blood pressure kiosk in Lancaster thanks to support from the Gunterberg Charitable Foundation and matching funds from CVS Health. Carol Culliton of the Gunterberg Charitable Foundation and representatives from the American Heart Association were on hand at Bright Side Opportunities Center on Sept. 12 for a ceremonial ribbon cutting for the new blood pressure monitoring kiosk, which is available for public use. The first kiosk was installed at the Barnstormers’ home stadium in July with the support of the Gunterberg Charitable Foundation. The kiosks are also the first American Heart Association blood pressure
kiosks to be installed in Pennsylvania. The kiosks provide instructions to ensure the user receives an accurate blood pressure reading and information to interpret their blood pressure reading and make healthy lifestyle choices that can help control their blood pressure. Users will also have the opportunity to register for the American Heart Association’s evidence-based blood pressure control tracker called Check. Change. Control. The program provides users with ongoing information and tips via email and helps them track their progress toward lowering their blood pressure over time using an online tracker. Anyone in the Lancaster community may take enroll in the Check. Change. Control. program by visiting www.ccctracker.com/aha/Gunterberg and entering campaign code GCFBP. According to new blood pressure guidelines released in November that define high blood pressure beginning at 130/80, 46 percent of U.S. adults may have high blood pressure. Uncontrolled high blood pressure raises the risk of stroke, heart attack or heart failure. For more information about controlling high blood pressure and other healthy living tips, readers may visit www.heart.org.
Representatives of the American Heart Association, Lancaster Division, the Gunterberg Charitable Foundation, and the Bright Side Opportunities Center gather for the dedication of the new American Heart Association blood pressure kiosk.
