On Oct. 21, the Mount Joy Train Station, 25 S. Market St., was officially dedicated at a ribbon-cutting ceremony attended by numerous federal, state, and local officials and community members. Jennie Granger, PennDOT multimodal transportation deputy secretary, greeted the crowd and thanked everyone involved in seeing the multi-year, multi-phase project through to completion. Two posters next to Granger displayed photos of what the station looked like prior to its renovation: a set of stairs leading down to the tracks, with no accommodation for passengers with disabilities. “The station has always been well-used, but (before this project) See Train Station pg 7

On both days, beef vegetable soup will be available to purchase by the quart while supplies last. Apple dumplings and sugar-free apple dumplings, along with a variety of other homemade baked goods, will be available to purchase on both days, too. On Nov. 2, hamburger barbecue sandwiches and hot dogs will be on the lunch menu, along with homemade chicken corn soup, beef vegetable soup, snacks, and beverages. Hot dogs will be free for children age 12 and under. A crafting group meets throughout
the year to create items that will be available to purchase at the Country Fair and Market, including book angels, gnomes, snowmen, ornaments, holiday items, purses, dog and cat toys, and more. Items donated by the congregation create an extensive indoor yard sale that organizers say offers something for everyone. The yard sale items are available to purchase by donation. Proceeds from the Country Fair and Market are used by Caring Hands and Hearts for mission and outreach efforts.
Over the past year the group donated toward Rainbow’s End Youth Services (REYS), the Mount Joy Food Bank, the Mount Joy Furniture Bank, New Life for Girls, UMC camps, a prison ministry, and other nonprofit organizations. Funds were also used to provide assistance to local families in need. Glossbrenner UMC has Sunday worship services at 9:30 a.m., with Sunday school at 10:45 a.m. Nursery care is available during the worship services. For more information, readers may visit http://gumcmj.net or call 717-653-5683.

“Romeo And Juliet” from pg 1 By Chelsea Peifer
Elizabethtown College Theatre will stage William Shakespeare’s classic tale of “Romeo and Juliet,” but the students will be presenting the show with more than one major twist. Director Michael Swanson explained that the setting will not be Italy, but Lancaster; the time period will not be the 1300s, but in the future around 2049; and, perhaps most notably, Romeo - and several other traditionally male roles - will be portrayed by female students. “Last spring we announced that we would have open casting,” said Swanson. All roles would be cast with regard purely to the quality of acting, not gender or race. Swanson said the concept reflects current trends in theater programming but also accommodates the fact that the student body at Elizabethtown College is approximately two-thirds female. Romeo will be portrayed by Grace Gibson, a senior English literature major from Medford, N.J., with Juliet being played by Delphi Aubry, a sophomore math education major from Mount Joy. “We actually had a fun conversation after auditions and after we found out that we were both being considered for these roles, and we had decided that this (scenario) would be our first choice,” relayed Aubry, who has acted in several Shakespeare productions with The People’s Shakespeare Project and at her alma mater, Lancaster Country Day School. “Probably the hardest thing about playing Juliet is that she’s 14, and throwing myself back into the mindset of a 14year-old girl isn’t something I ever thought I’d need to do,” Aubry said. Aubry and Gibson believe audiences will be entertained by the fresh spin that the student cast is putting on the tragic tale. “When I tell people, first of all, that I’m playing Romeo, and then that it’s post-apocalyptic, they are definitely intrigued,” said Gibson. The show marks her first time in a lead role, with her past theatrical experience primarily being in musicals. The production will include an elaborate dance scene, with choreography by Kristin Pontz. The cast has also been working with professional stage combat coach Dan Burke in order to perfect the combat scenes in “Romeo and Juliet.” Performances are scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. on Thursday to Saturday, Oct. 31 to Nov. 2, and Thursday and Friday,
Nov. 7 and 8, in the Tempest Theatre at Elizabethtown College, 1 Alpha Drive, Elizabethtown. An additional 2 p.m. performance is set for Sunday, Nov. 10. To purchase tickets in advance, interested individuals may call 717-361-1160 or email boxoffice@etown.edu. Tickets will also be available to purchase at the box office prior to each performance, while supplies last. The 2019-20 school year marks the last season of an academic Elizabethtown College Theatre, as it was announced in June 2019 that the theater and philosophy majors offered at the school would be phased out. Swanson said the future of the theater program, as far as student productions as extracurricular, is unclear. The final academic theater season will also include the Etown Shorts Fest VIII, with performances set to begin at 8 p.m.
on Friday and Saturday, Nov. 22 and 23, in Tempest Theatre. Those performances will be focused on experiment and education in a group of short plays directed by theater students. “Silent Sky,” a play by Lauren Gunderson, will round out the season with performances on select dates from April 16 to 26, 2020. For more information, readers may visit www.etown.edu/ depts/theatre. Pictured on front: Elizabethtown College students Delphi Aubry (left) and Grace Gibson will star as Juliet and Romeo, respectively, in the school’s production of “Romeo and Juliet.” Performances are scheduled for select dates from Oct. 31 to Nov. 10 in Tempest Theatre.

Lucy, the youngest sibling, opens a wardrobe to discover the fantasyland of Narnia, where it is always winter, but never Christmas. “(Lucy) is very adventurous, and she loves all her siblings,” said Claire. “She’s not afraid to do anything and will go anywhere to help anybody.” Lucy’s siblings join her on subsequent visits to Narnia and encounter mythical creatures including a White Witch - portrayed by Brynne Smith - who rules the land instead of the rightful king, Aslan the Lion, portrayed by Austin Shaeffer. A battle ensues as the children adventure with Aslan and other creatures to restore Narnia to its proper ruler. “I like how Aslan has authority and the other creatures look up to him,” Austin said. “One thing I like about Peter is that he is always trying to keep track of his siblings. He’s very caring and tries to protect them,” said Samuel. “My favorite part about playing him is that I get to tease Edmund, and he is played by a good friend of mine, so that’s a lot of fun.” Kelli Robinson, who is directing the MCCS production of “The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe,” said that the cast features students in grades six through 12 - a diversity of ages that she appreciates as the students have a chance to learn from and interact with one another. “This show really identifies well with the faith of this school, and because it is an allegory, it is fun to see (the students) make those connections,” stated Robinson. “C.S. Lewis wrote this so that younger kids, when confronted with darker aspects of their faith and life, wouldn’t be as scared,” added Robinson. “It’s definitely going to be a family-friendly show.” Additional members of the cast include Benjamin Gerlach as Mr. Beaver, Katelyn Niedwick as Mrs. Beaver, Vince Clay as Tumnus, Jordan DeGroft as Fenris Ulf, Kylie Masters as Unicorn, Enya Smith as Centaur, Jackson Mohr as Dwarf, Joshua Humbert as Father Christmas, Alivia Rutt as Elf, and Isabel Robles as White Stag. Avalyn Hostetter, Summer Sturgis, and Kasai Hines will portray Aslan’s followers, and Emma Nicklas, Timothy

Donegal High School (DHS), 1025 Koser Road, Mount Joy, will host its annual Veterans Day program on Monday, Nov. 11. A breakfast reception at 9 a.m. will precede the ceremony, which will begin promptly at 10 a.m. As has traditionally been past practice, students and guests will learn about the history of Veterans Day, listen to “In Flanders Fields” performed by the DHS chorus, pay tribute to DHS graduates killed in Vietnam, hear from the 2019 VFW Voice of Democracy essay competition first-place award winner, and witness a rollcall of veterans present. The program will conclude with the somber playing of taps. This year’s program will feature a panel of veterans spanning from World War II to the Iraq War who will discuss the question, “What does Veterans Day mean to me?” It will be led by a student moderator. Interested area residents who are veterans, along with their spouses, are welcome to preregister to attend the day’s events by contacting the DHS principal’s secretary, Tina Maag, at 717-4921202 or tina.maag@donegalsd.org by Thursday, Nov. 7.

St. Mark’s United Methodist Church (UMC), 27 E. Main St., Mount Joy, invites the community to be part of a special day on Sunday, Nov. 3. The day will begin at 9 a.m. with a service that combines both traditional and contemporary elements. The church’s new worship leader, Meghan Brenneman, and its new organist, Michael Kohler, will be featured during the service. The service that morning will include the rededication of the bell tower, the remembrance of the saints, and Communion that is open to all. Work was done on the bell tower between Labor Day and the middle of December in 2018 to restore the tower to its condition when it was built in 1924. The community will be called to service with the tolling of the bell, which was last rung in 2001. A Ministry Fair will take place in the fellowship hall from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. The event will offer an opportunity to see all the ministries that St. Mark’s offers, such as Care Ministries, opportunities for children and youths, dinners, and more,

Dutch Apple To Stage “Holiday Inn” Irving Berlin’s classic “Holiday Inn” will be presented at the Dutch Apple Dinner Theatre from Thursday, Nov. 14, through Saturday, Jan. 4, 2020. Based on the 1942 film starring Bing Crosby and Fred Astaire, “Holiday Inn” tells the tale of Jim as he leaves the bright lights of show business to settle down on a farmhouse in Connecticut and discovers that life just is not the same without a bit of song and dance. When Jim meets a spirited schoolteacher with hidden talent to spare, they turn the farmhouse into a fabulous inn that is only open on the holidays.
The show includes classic songs by Berlin, including “Shaking the Blues Away,” “Heat Wave,” “Blue Skies,” “Cheek to Cheek,” “It’s a Lovely Day Today,” “Easter Parade,” and “White Christmas.” From Thanksgiving to the Fourth of July, “Holiday Inn” features dance numbers, comedy, and a heartwarming story. Ironville UMC members will host a holiday bazaar on Nov. 2. Attendees are invited to bring pet food for the Pet Pantry of Lancaster County, which will take part in the event. By Dayna M. Reidenouer
The annual holiday bazaar hosted by the members of Ironville United Methodist Church (UMC), 4020 Holly Drive, Columbia, will run from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 2. Crafts made by parishioners will be available for sale along with items from 11 independent vendors. Food, a silent auction, and a white elephant room will also be part of the event. Vendor coordinator Ellie Shirk noted that some of the vendors will be familiar faces to attendees of previous bazaars, while others are newcomers to the event. Their offerings will include knitted clothing, holiday ornaments and décor, crafts, jewelry, dish towels, washcloths, artwork, aprons, foot and hand warmers, antiques, primitive décor, Christmas linens, cellphone bags, hats, and notecards. The Pet Pantry of Lancaster County will sell pet products. The silent auction will feature quilted wall hangings, a knotted fleece blanket, a quilted bag, and seasonal wreaths. The kitchen will sell an assortment of hot and cold items, including hot dogs, beef barbecue and pulled pork sandwiches, chicken corn soup, soft pretzels, and homemade baked goods and other sweet treats, such as apple dumplings, candied apples, and
sandtarts. The soft pretzels will be Epex brand. “They’re supposed to be the best,” Shirk commented. Admission to the bazaar will be free of charge, but attendees are invited to bring a bag of dog or cat food to the event. The food will be given to the Pet Pantry of Lancaster County, a nonprofit organization that operates a pet food bank program and offers lowcost spay and neuter services and vaccinations. The Pet Pantry also helps to support animal rescue through an adoption program. Bazaar co-coordinator Brenda Macbeth said that the organizers approached the Pet Pantry and asked for its participation in the event. “Our congregation supports pets, and (the Pet Pantry) is a big thing in helping people keep their pets,” Macbeth explained. She noted that the church has supported a food bank for people in the past, but this year, the committee wanted to take a different approach. “Rather than sending money (to the beneficiary) after the bazaar, we wanted to do it at the bazaar so more people could participate,” Macbeth said. “Essentially, we’re helping people and pets because we’re helping people keep their pets.” For more information about the bazaar, readers may call the church at 717-684-8072 or Shirk at 717-341-2921.
