Dishing out nostalgia in “It Happened on Route 66” BY CATHY MOLITORIS

Set in an Arizona diner in 1955, “It Happened on Route 66” offers audiences a serving of nostalgia with a side of humor. “This show will have you giggling from start to finish,” said Ginger Wayde, who is directing the play with

the Elizabethtown Homeschool Drama Program, part of the Life Enrichment Center (LEC) homeschool co-op in Mount Joy. “I particularly like staging comedies, because we all need to laugh more.” The play will be performed at Hope Community Church, 1806 Harrisburg Ave., Mount Joy, at 7 p.m. on Friday, See Nostalgia pg 4

The cast of “The Man Who Came to Dinner”

Donegal to present “The Man Who Came to Dinner” hey say you should never meet your heroes, and that might be the case in “The Man Who Came to Dinner.” Donegal Performing Arts will present the play at 7:30 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, Nov. 17 and 18, and at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 19, at the high school, 1025 Koser Road, Mount Joy. Set in the late 1930s, the play tells the story of Sheridan Whiteside, a beloved radio celebrity, who accepts an invitation from a family during his travel through their small town on his tour. What starts as one dinner turns into a weeks-long stay after Sheridan slips on ice at the home and must recover from his injury in the house.

T

“As he’s there, the family slowly starts to find out he’s not exactly the personality he seems to be on the radio,” said Landis Cramer, a senior who portrays Sheridan. “He’s relatively unpleasant, and he monopolizes the house.” Soon, the

“It’s going to make you laugh, but it’s also relatable.” family members are catering to Sheridan’s every whim and enduring his harsh sense of humor. “My character’s sort of signature thing is wildly creative insults he loves to sling to the people in the house,” Landis explained. “His sense

of humor mostly involves very creative ways of putting other people down.” A subplot to the story involves a budding romance between Sheridan’s secretary, Maggie Cutler, and Bert Jefferson, a local newspaper reporter. “Since Maggie works for Sheridan, he doesn’t like that she’s interested in Bert,” said Elijah Barlett, a freshman who plays Bert. “He spends a lot of time trying to mess up their relationship. The funny thing about my character is, I have absolutely no idea what’s going on the entire time.” Zoe Snyder, a senior who portrays Maggie, said the show is funny but also thought-provoking. “It really shows the emotional bonds of the characters,” she stated.

St. Mark’s will offer free Thanksgiving dinner BY CATHY MOLITORIS

Members of St. Mark’s United Methodist Church in Mount Joy believe that it is important to reach out and serve the people in their community, said parishioner Janet Lehman. “One way that St. Mark’s family meets the needs of people in their community is through their food ministry,” she explained. St. Mark’s will offer a free Thanksgiving Day dinner on

Thursday, Nov. 23, with curbside pickup between 11:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. at The Gathering Place, 6 Pine St., Mount Joy. Delivery will be available to people who are sick and who are homebound. “St. Mark’s began serving a free Thanksgiving Day dinner in 2005,” Lehman said, noting that about 70 people came for the meal the first year. “Each year more individuals and families are enjoying (the meal). In 2022, almost 700 people enjoyed St. Mark’s Thanksgiving

“Throughout the play, you can see the conflict they go through. It’s going to make you laugh, but it’s also relatable. You’ll be like, ‘Oh yeah, I understand what that person is going through.’” For Lily Grosh, a sophomore who plays the youngest member of the family, June Stanley, the play provides an opportunity for audiences to also see a sympathetic side to Sheridan. “June is excited that Mr. Whiteside is in her home because he’s a celebrity,” she remarked. “She confides in him and is able to build a

Nov. 17, and at 1 and 7 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 18. As Wayde explained, the plot revolves around Cookie’s Diner, a sleepy little place where not much happens, until a runaway bride shows up one day because her Ferrari broke down nearby. “The bride is none other than Lovey Lamour, the most glamorous actress in Hollywood,” Wayde shared. “Through her interactions with starstruck fan waitress Sally, Lovey learns a little more about life in a tiny town and what’s important, and Sally learns where it is that home truly exists.” Wayde noted that the play involves students in grades seven through 10 in both cast and crew. “The costumes are fun, the décor is classic and the characters are relatable and funny,” she shared. “It’s reminiscent of ‘Happy Days.’” She emphasized that the performers focused especially on making the diner seem like a realistic place, with cooking, cleaning, serving and more going on at all times. “And they need to eat in front of people who are watching

them, hopefully without making a mess, but that’s real life, too,” she said. LEC is a homeschool community that provides resources, education and support for students and parents. “Not only does it give kids a chance to gather with others in a group learning environment, but it also gives moms a muchneeded opportunity to connect with other moms to find support and encouragement on their homeschool journeys,” Wayde remarked. “It’s a great place to forge lifetime friendships for kids and moms.” Wayde, who has been directing shows at LEC for more than a decade, said the performances are offered free of charge to encourage families to attend without breaking the bank. “My desire is always to provide familyfriendly, affordable theater to the community,” she noted. “We do sell concessions and cast shout-outs where you can honor cast members with treats and messages.” For more information on LEC, visit www.homeschool -life.com/PA/lec.

Craft show will support mission outreach fund Gail Ruhl knows it can be intimidating for people to walk into a new church. That’s one of the reasons Ruhl’s Church hosts an annual Manheim Holiday Craft Show. “We try to get people in the door however they feel comfortable,” said Gail, who is organizing the show with Michelle Eakman. “Coming into a church for a craft show might be where they feel comfortable, and then you get to have a conversation with them, and it could turn into something. That’s our hope.” The Manheim Holiday Craft Show will be held at Ruhl’s Church, 4810 Elizabethtown Road, Manheim, on Saturday, Nov. 18, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. It will feature vendors and food. “We have over 30 vendors,” said Eakman, who is coordinating the craft side of the event and who will be selling her handmade infinity T-shirt scarves. “It will be a wide variety - baked goods to clothing and embroidered items. We’ll

have some direct sales like Pampered Chef and Norwex.” Gail, who is in charge of the food, noted that the menu will feature tried-and-true items that people come back for every year. “I’m making my chicken corn noodle soup, and we always have barbecue sandwiches and hot dogs,” she said. “We also offer some baked goods and a variety of beverages.” The soup will be available to eat in or to go. “People can bring their own containers to take soup, but it’s not necessary,” Gail shared. “We’ll dish it up in quart containers.” Gail and her husband, Chuck, have been making the soup for many years. “It’s a combination of a couple of recipes, and it’s been tweaked over the years,” Gail commented. Proceeds from the Manheim Holiday Craft Show are used to support the mission outreach fund of the church. “We do local, national and global missions,” Gail said, adding that a group from the church takes a stateside mis-

This coming year’s trip is still being determined, but Gail thinks it’s possible the volunteers will return to Montpelier, Vt., where they served five individuals and helped a local church last year. Just weeks after they returned home, heavy rains and flooding hit the area, destroying one of the homes they worked on and causing major damage at the church. Cast members include middle-schoolers and highschool students who first learned of the play when it was performed at LampeterStrasburg (L-S) High School. “Our kids wanted to tackle something with substance,” said Tammy Bartlett, one of the founding members of Epiphany Homeschool Theatre Academy, when explaining how the play was chosen. “One of the girls had a friend who was in ‘Radium’ at L-S, and she thought the show was great. I spoke to the kids, and they were very excited. They wanted something that would be challenging and have a powerful message. Many of these kids are ‘actor’s actors,’ and they wanted to delve into character and emotion.” Bartlett noted that the

venue is not a traditional stage but a black box theater, which is a more intimate performing space. “That is a very unique experience for students because normally they perform on a stage in an auditorium,” Bartlett noted. “Most kids do not have the experience of performing in a black box theater, and it’s a very intimate show. (The audience is) up close.” The homeschool theater group formed in August and is currently rehearsing at The Middletown Home and at Lancaster Bible College (LBC). LBC theater students have partnered with the theater group, and LBC student Allyson Hunsicker has taken on the role of codirector. According to its mission

statement, the group was created for homeschooled students and their families “who desire a high-quality theater experience without having to compromise their Christian beliefs and values.” “We want to put on shows that are wholesome not only for the kids but the community and to provide quality opportunities for these homeschooled kids,” Bartlett noted. For tickets and for more information, visit https:// epiphanyonstage.com. A link to order tickets as well as cast biographies are available by searching for “Epiphany Homeschool Theatre Academy” on Facebook. Tickets will also be sold at the door. The play is best suited for people age 10 and up.

“This is a really fun, family-friendly event to come together and have a fun morning before your Thanksgiving festivities,” said Grace Wells, describing the sixth annual Great Turkey Chase. The run/walk 5K and kids’ run will be held on Thanksgiving Day, Thursday, Nov. 23, at Elizabethtown Brethren in Christ Church, 996 E. High St. Registration will begin at 6:45 a.m., and the 5K will step off at 8:15 a.m. The kids’ run will begin at 9:15 a.m. “ We are going to have stuffed turkeys along the route, and participants can look for them,” Wells stated. “If they find one, they’ll bring it back to the finish line, and we will give them a frozen turkey to take home with them.” Prizes will be awarded in various age groups, including age 14 and under and ages 15 to 19, and then in 10-year groups up to age 80-plus. “We’ve had one or two over80 participants in the past,

and we have one who comes every year,” Wells noted. She started the kids’ run at last year’s event and has made some tweaks to this year’s logistics. “There’s going to be a small route in the parking lot for the youngest who want to participate,” she said, noting that it will include a loop that is approximately one-tenth of a mile. “Other kids can participate in the quarter-mile loop on the grass and pavement, and they can complete the loop up to four times.” The kids’ run will be sponsored by The Tatted Toy Guys in Elizabethtown, which will distribute prizes to participants. The Great Turkey Chase has grown each year, Wells said, adding that close to 300 people participated last year. She is partnering with the Elizabethtown Community Housing & Outreach Services (ECHOS) for the event, with proceeds from sponsorship money and registration fees as well as 100% of donations benefiting the

“Christmas at the Star Barn is a magical way to begin the Christmas season - truly like walking into a winter wonderland with the amazingly decorated Star Barn and all the activities,” said Dana Myers, director of charitable giving for Brittany’s Hope. “Seeing the children’s eyes light up with wonder and awe is something you don’t want to miss.” Christmas at the Star Barn will be held on Saturday, Dec. 2, at Stone Gables Estate, 1 Hollinger Lane, Elizabethtown. The event will feature Breakfast with Santa, with six seating times between 7:30 and 10:15 a.m. Tickets will include a buffet meal sponsored by Food for Thought Catering, a special gift delivered by Santa’s helpers, a photo with Santa and access to all activities on the site. Festivities throughout the

grounds will include pony rides, face painting, Christmas cookie and cupcake decorating, children’s crafts, backyard games, family photo sessions and a campfire with s’mores. People are also invited to take a self-guided tour of the Star Barn Village, enjoy outdoor holiday decorations and explore the fully decorated Star Barn, Star Barn Museum, chicken coop and carriage house. Activities will run from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Not only does the event provide a fun and festive way to kick off the holidays, but it also supports the mission of Brittany’s Hope, Myers said. “The Star Barn and Food for Thought Catering offer Christmas at the Star Barn as a fundraiser for Brittany’s Hope to aid orphaned and at-risk children,” she explained. “One hundred percent of all donations and proceeds go directly to support
