entrepreneurs to the area, including Asa Packer, a Connecticut native and carpenter by trade. Packer realized the opportunity the coal region held and used his skills to build and repair canal boats to transport coal, eventually establishing the firm of A. & R. W. Packer, which built canal boats and locks for the Lehigh Coal & Navigation Company. Packer and his family settled in Mauch Chunk. Packer’s sights were set even higher on finding ways to use technology to transport the region’s rich coal resources. In the mid-1850s, Packer took control of a railway line from Mauch Chunk to Easton and connected railway lines to the coal mines in Luzerne and Schuylkill counties. Known as the Lehigh Valley Railroad Company, the line eventually extended into the Susquehanna Valley and New York state to connect with the Erie Railroad, effectively growing the region’s industrial reach even farther and establishing Mauch Chunk as a center of industrial commerce, tourism and entertainment.

and exciting recreation, Jim Thorpe is a favorite for weekend getaways for many types of travelers. But to truly understand Jim Thorpe’s appeal, one must first look at its roots. Originally named Mauch Chunk, the town was pivotal to America’s industrial development as a main transport area for coal mining. The coal mined throughout what’s now known as the Pocono Mountains was transported from Mauch Chunk to Eastern markets via the Lehigh River, which helped to build the local economy and establish the community as an independent leader in a growing industrial market. Many of the transportation systems of the era, including canals, locks, dams and early gravity railroads, are still a strong part of the community’s culture today. The focus on coal and modern transportation methods brought early 19th-century

This year, it’s more important than ever to protect yourself and the people you care about from the flu. It’s possible to get both COVID-19 and the flu at the same time — and to spread those viruses to the people around you. But you can greatly reduce your chance of catching the flu and spreading it to others by getting a flu shot. And if you do catch the flu, the vaccine can reduce the severity of your illness. We’re fighting two health threats this season, so every little bit helps. One little shot can make a big difference.

ExtraGive from pg 1 The hope is that the 2020 ExtraGive will do as well or better. Spangler noted that when the shutdown was announced in March, the ExtraGive organizers knew that this year’s event would be different. “We were a little unsure about how everything was going to go,” Spangler commented, “but we have more sponsors this year than ever before.” More than 500 nonprofits will participate in the upcoming ExtraGive. To qualify, potential participants must serve Lancaster County residents, be registered 501(c)(3) Photo frames and other props may be downloaded and printed to build excitement for the Extraordinary Give, which will be held on Nov. 20. “Every year we have a stretch goal. That allows people to ‘give extra,’” explained LCCF communications manager Aaron Spangler. With the assistance of the stretch goal, last year’s ExtraGive raised $10.9 million, for a total of $53.5 million since the event’s inception in 2012.

organizations in good standing, and have independent audits or reviews. In typical years, about 80 to 100 ExtraGive social events are held across Lancaster County during the 24 hours. However, this year, LCCF is requiring organizations to adhere to COVID-19 mitigation guidelines, so Spangler anticipates fewer socials. To encourage participants to adapt, LCCF will award a creativity prize after the event, and it has posted downloadable photo props and social media images that individuals may use at home at www.extragive.org/info/ downloads. “At its core, ExtraGive has been a digital event,” Spangler said. “From a pure mechanics standpoint, nothing has changed from past years, but it’s no secret that it won’t feel quite the same this year.” Rather than host an in-per-
son countdown to the close of the event, LCCF will present a live webcast from 5 p.m. to midnight. It will feature entertainment and spotlights of participating nonprofits so viewers may find new causes to support. A special broadcast with WGAL and Choice Live from Lititz will air from 9 to 10 p.m. Community members are invited to submit videos and post on social media with #IGiveExtra to say why they are participating in the ExtraGive for inclusion in the webcast. Submission information is available at www.extragive.org/info/ extragivecast. “Even though we can’t be together, we want to build the ExtraGive CAST together,” Spangler remarked. “We want folks to really feel like they’re prime players in the day. It’s their excitement and enthusiasm that has made the ExtraGive as successful as it has been over the years in Lancaster County.” For more information about the ExtraGive, readers may contact Spangler at aspangler@lancfound.org or 717-397-1629, ext. 113.

HILLTOP ACRES FARM MARKET
The Winters Heritage House Museum, 47 E. High St., is getting crafty. The museum will host the Elizabethtown Heritage Craft Show from 4 to 8 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 13, and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 14. Admission is by monetary donation to the museum or by donation of nonperishable food item for the Community Cupboard of Elizabethtown. “The craft show is an opportunity for the crafters to showcase and sell their work, for the public to come and enjoy what the vendors are offering and for the food bank to benefit as well,” said Nancy Landis, museum director. The Winters Heritage House Museum building dates to the 1760s, Landis noted, and money from the craft show will help with necessary repairs to the site. “We are just getting ready to launch a capital campaign,” she explained. “We are hoping to replace the roof in part of the building. We estimate we will need about $50,000 for that.” Visitors to the craft show, which is marking its 30th year, can expect a wide variety of items, said Maryann Swartz, museum manager. “It’s a nice selection of unique, handmade items,” she shared, listing hand-forged iron pieces, scarves and hats made from handspun dog fur, home décor, jewelry, handsewn items, hand-turned wood and more. “We hope to have about 25 vendors, and we may have some outside in the backyard on Saturday, weather permitting,” Landis stated. To keep the event as safe as possible, masks will be required for both shoppers and vendors. “We are limiting the number of vendors per room and limiting the number of people allowed in at one time,” Landis said. “Our route through the show will be one way, but you can re-enter if you want to revisit a booth.” In a typical year, the Winters Heritage House Museum offers a range of classes on traditional skills like hearth cooking, spinning and weaving. There is also a genealogy library on site. “We are currently offering self-guided tours of the museum with a QR code you download on your phone,” Swartz said. “It’s an interactive tour.” Landis noted that the craft show offers a way to bring people from the community into a building that has a historical significance in Elizabethtown. “We have people who come back every year, and then we have people who are here for the first time who say, ‘Why haven’t I been coming to this before? It’s great.’ We really have something for everyone,” she said.

Any tour of the village must include Historic Stone Row, a series of stone row houses Asa Packer built for his engineers and foremen of the Lehigh Valley Railroad. You’ll also find Victorian buildings along Broadway now housing cute shops offering everything from handmade soaps and pottery to wine tasting rooms, antiques and art galleries. Don’t miss Somersault Letterpress, a vintage letterpress and creative studio, or Rainbow’s End, a quaint corner candy shop sure to amaze kids (and kids at heart) Outdoors enthusiasts can enjoy an entirely different aspect of Jim Thorpe, no matter what the season. After all, the many railways and waterways of the area’s storied past make for excellent outdoor recreation today. Take a 9mile downhill bike trip on the Switchback Trail to the picturesque Broadway in downtown Jim Thorpe. Bike or hike through the Lehigh Gorge Rail Trail for some truly spectacular scenery, or visit any of the numerous local trailheads accessible from town. Take to the water for a challenging whitewater rafting ride or take a scenic kayak paddle through the gorge and surrounding waterways. Several outfitters are available to arrange tours to explore the region’s waters. Naturalists may want to spend a relaxing afternoon at the Bear Mountain Butterfly Sanctuary. Romantic small-town charm, entrepreneurship, a legendary past and scenic vistas all make their home in the Pocono Mountains’ Jim Thorpe. Discover this unique spot for a weekend getaway in the Switzerland of America. Visit whereandwhen.com/jimthorpe for more on Jim Thorpe, including the Jail House Museum, which is said to be haunted by the Ghosts of the Molly Maguires. Note: Some of the attractions mentioned in the article may be closed for the season or have altered hours due to COVID-19. Please check websites for days and hours of operation.

Today, visitors can get a glimpse of Packer’s success with a visit to the Asa Packer Mansion, a National Historic Landmark that overlooks the Lehigh River and Mauch Chunk National Historic District and that remains much like it did when first constructed in 1861 as a memorial to Packer and his accomplishments. Visitors can learn more about Packer’s successes as a businessman and his work as a philanthropist through guided tours held throughout the day at the 17-room Italianate villa. If you want to experience a little of what it was really like to live as a Packer you can stay at the Harry Packer Mansion Inn, just down the street from the Asa Packer Mansion. Harry Packer, the elder Packer’s son, lived in the Victorian mansion, complete with 15-foot ceilings, marble fireplaces and gilded mirrors reflecting the elegance of the Victorian age. Guests can enjoy period furnishings and artwork at the inn and even take part in special wine tastings or murder mystery weekends, a nod to the fact that the home was the inspiration for Walt Disney World’s “Haunted Mansion.” Take a self-guided walking or Segway tour to learn more about some of the historic downtown. Visit the Mauch Chunk Museum and Cultural Center to learn more about the town’s history, where there’s even a working model of the Switchback Railroad, one of the very earliest in the region.

Overlander Earns District Medal, Boys Place 5th
BY LEAH SINTIC
On October 31, Donegal’s Brock Overlander paced the Indians at the District Three Championships held at Big Spring High School, claiming a medal with his 15th place race time of 16:53.6. “He had a great race,” Donegal coach Philip Koser said of the senior. “He and all the boys gave it all they had.” Collectively, the Donegal harriers placed fifth in the 2A race held
in Newville which included 94 athletes representing 25 schools. Hunter Gehman was the next Donegal runner to cross, placing 23rd (17:21.9), followed by a 28th finish from Logan Fry (17:32.2). Sam Rothstein and John Spackman went back-to-back at 51 and 52 respectively, and freshman Noah Hinkel claimed 59th. “When they finished, they had nothing left. They used every bit of energy they had to run the course,” summarized Koser. “Fifth
is a solid finish on a season we were not sure we were going to get in this year. We are all very proud of the boys and their accomplishments this season.” FOOTBALL October 30ths home field loss to Ephrata, 33-7, put the Indians at a split 3-3 record as the abbreviated season hurtles towards its conclusion. The Mountaineers built a sizeable 26-point lead with four drives to the end zone before the half, but the Indians regained some ground with a strong third quarter. Mason Ober’s six-yard run put the Indians on the scoreboard, and Luke Bixler capitalized on the extra point. The Indians’ defense denied Ephrata any opportunity to score in the third, led by eight tackles and two assists from sophomore Noah Rohrer. Garrett Blake gained the most offensive ground for the Tribe,
rushing for 105 yards and picking up another 25 yards on three receptions. Blake is one of the team’s eight seniors, joined by Gavin Hawk, Nolan O’Connell, Mason Ober, Trent Weaver, Joel Grillo, Owen Kling, and Haydan Guerrero. “The seniors are the glue to this team,” credited head coach Chad Risberg on their season long contributions. “They held it together while showing the underclassmen how to do things the right way. I could not be more proud of them.” GIRLS’ SOCCER Four Donegal girls’ soccer players received Section Three all-star recognition this season. “The Importance of Being Earnestâ€? is a farcical comedy written by Oscar Wilde. “It’s a show about a bunch of rich people and the frivolity of their lives,â€? said Collin Arntz, who plays Algernon Moncrieff. “Algernon and Jack (Worthing, played by Andrew Allen) both have secret lives that they are keeping from their families, but their secrets start to come out.â€? This is the first time Collin, who is a senior, has performed on stage. He’s been a part of the sound crew in previous years. For Andrew, who is also a senior performing in his first show, the play has been challenging but also rewarding. He said audiences should not be deterred by the fact the show was first performed in 1895. “It’s really funny, and even though it’s set back in time, it’s still very relevant to today,â€? Andrew said. “The jokes hold up very well. It was a little hard to work through the dialogue, but once we got it down, everything clicked.â€? Ashtyn Hess, who plays Lady Bracknell in the production, said audiences can expect a performance that is both visually stunning as well
as layered with nuance. “It’s a very beautiful show in and of itself because the costumes are gorgeous, she said of the Victorian-era garb worn by the characters. “And then beyond that, it’s a show that makes you think. Ashtyn, who is also a senior, said having the opportunity to perform a show this year is especially important. “We have all these traditions and we’ve missed out on a lot of things, she stated. “That makes this experience that much more special maybe than other years, and we value it so much more. The cast and crew of the show includes 26 people, Brackbill said. The rest of the cast is Erin Kready as Cecily Cardew, Milli Straub as Gwendolen Fairfax, Danielle Brady as Miss Prism, Ricky Fitts as Dr. Chasuble and Ethan Steck as Lane and Merriman. “These students are really impressive, Brackbill noted. “This is a tough show with paragraphs of dialogue and that requires an immense amount of memorizing, but they are handling it like champions. If you want to be impressed by teenagers who are doing something wonderful, you need to see this show.

Even though the race is not happening in the traditional way, Wells noted that the virtual event has its benefits, including being able to draw from a larger pool of participants who are not limited by geographic location. “Our first participant to sign up lives in North Carolina. He used to live in Elizabethtown and helped with (local races), she said. “We also have someone signed up to participate from California. Wells said everyone is welcome to participate in what she hopes will be a successful fundraiser and fun event. “It’s a great way to get out, get some exercise, support a great cause and have some family fun, she stated. “It’s something we can all do together to support people in need and people who are going through a rough time.

When COVID-19 threatened to cancel her annual Great Turkey Hunt 5K this year, she didn’t give up. Instead, she decided this year’s event would still go on - virtually. “We are doing a virtual 5K, which means participants are running or walking on their own, she explained. “They complete any 5K route of their choice between the dates of Nov. 21 and 28.
