St. Mark’s Extends Invitation To Free Thanksgiving Dinner Thanksgiving is a day for families to relax and enjoy a delicious meal with their loved ones. It is not a time to be alone; however, not everyone is blessed to have a family, or relatives nearby, to share this day with. That is why the St. Mark’s United Methodist Church (UMC) family and community members will be cooking and serving the church’s 15th annual free community Thanksgiving Day dinner. In 2018, more than 90 volunteers helped cook and serve Thanksgiving meals to approximately 400 people. After guests enjoyed a delicious home-cooked turkey dinner, many volunteers sat together and enjoyed Thanksgiving dinner, too. This year’s free Thanksgiving Day dinner will be served on Thursday, Nov. 28, in the fellowship hall of St. Mark’s UMC, 27 E. Main St., Mount Joy. Besides turkey and gravy, the meal will include stuffing, mashed potatoes, sweet potatoes, vegetables, rolls and butter, cranberry sauce, dessert, and beverages. People who want to enjoy dinner at the church with family, friends, and community members will be greeted, seated, and served the family-style dinner at noon and should plan to arrive between 11:45 a.m. and noon. Takeout options are also available. Those who pick up a dinner to take home should arrive at the church between 11 and 11:20 a.m. only. Arrangements can also be made in advance to have meals delivered to individuals who are sick or unable to leave their homes. To make reservations for eat-in, takeout, or delivery, individuals are See Thanksgiving Dinner pg 3

The congregation of St. Mark’s United Methodist Church in Mount Joy welcomes anyone to enjoy a free Thanksgiving dinner at noon on Nov. 28 at the church. Takeout options are available. Reservations are strongly encouraged, and volunteers are needed.

Lois Stites retired as the organist at St. Mark’s United Methodist Church in Mount Joy on Sept. 29. Stites served at St. Mark’s with her musical talents and leadership for 38 years after joining the church staff in 1981. In addition to playing the organ and piano at St. Mark’s, Stites organized special music during the summer months when the choir took a break. Stites also volunteered as bell choir director for the past five years. Although Stites has retired from her position as organist, she plans to continue to be involved in St. Mark’s music program. A special evening to celebrate Stites’ ministry to the church will be held on Saturday, Nov. 16, at the Gathering Place, 6 Pine St., Mount Joy. Stites began playing music for church services at the age of 10. Born in Arcanum, Ohio, she grew up near Dayton, Ohio. Stites graduated from Manchester College, North Manchester, Ind., with a degree in elementary education. Over the years, Stites has collaborated with countless musicians and played for hundreds of weddings and funerals. A resident of Hershey, Stites previously lived in Elizabethtown for 27 years, where her husband, John Stites, was a professor of music at Elizabethtown College for 30 years until his death in 1998. Stites has three children and four grandchildren.

Members of St. Mark’s UMC believe that they are called to invite, connect, equip, and send followers of Jesus to meet needs, touch lives, and change the world. One way that the St. Mark’s family can meet needs and touch lives in the community is through its food ministry. The Lancaster County Community Foundation (LCCF) has announced that the eighth annual Extraordinary Give will take place on Friday, Nov. 22. On that day, from midnight to 11:59 p.m., individuals can visit www.ExtraGive.org, choose from more than 500 local nonprofit organizations, make a secure online donation, and have their gift stretched through a stretch pool of at least $500,000. Also, an additional $50,000 in prizes will be offered to participating nonprofit organizations throughout the day in the form of various incentive structures. The funds for the stretch pool and the prizes are available thanks to the LCCF and presenting sponsors Rodgers & Associates, High

Foundation, and additional corporate sponsors. The 2018 Extraordinary Give was a record-breaking day, generating $10.2 million from more than 23,500 donors to support 493 nonprofit organizations. Since the event started in 2012, the Extraordinary Give has engaged more than 30,000 people in giving, supported more than 500 nonprofits, and raised $42 million for the community. New for the 2019 Extraordinary Give, the minimum gift amount has been reduced from $25 to $10. The change was made with the goal of inspiring more individuals to participate and generating more engagement from across the region. The new minimum amount

open to the public, will promote the event by applying a temporary decal to their personal or business vehicle. Decals will be available through the LCCF. Give Fleet volunteers will apply their decals at any time during the month of November. Any licensed driver is eligible and can register to participate at www.extragive.org/info/extra -opportunities. On Nov. 22, ExtraGive Hot Spots will be located in Columbia and Elizabethtown, at The Shops at Rockvale, and at other venues in order to highlight locations across Lancaster County. Additional details are forthcoming. The ExtraGive Fest, the Extraordinary Finale, will take place from 6 p.m. to midnight on Nov. 22 at the Lancaster Marriott and Lancaster County Convention Center, 25 S. Queen

The Classical Conversations homeschool community in Elizabethtown recently launched handmade rockets. Participating were (front) Wyatt Skillen, (back, from left) Isaac Martin, Soren Telesha, Liam Hershey, rocket enthusiast Dave Basile, Leah MacKay, Carolina Tomko, and Eva Tomko. The Classical Conversations homeschool community in Elizabethtown recently successfully launched rockets handmade by students. Seven students ages 8 to 10 built rockets out of household materials and launched them under the supervision of Dave Basile, a local veteran and rocket enthusiast. Students observed how the differences in shape and size of fins and nose cones affected the rockets’ trajectories. Classical Conversations is a worldwide classical, Christian homeschool organization that seeks to equip parents and students to use the classical tools of learning to hone students’ academic skills of recitation, logical

thinking, and persuasive rhetoric. Classical Conversations Elizabethtown, which meets at St. Paul’s United Methodist Church, 398 N. Locust St., Elizabethtown, currently offers programs for children from 4-year-olds to sixthgraders, including an intensive writing and grammar seminar for students ages 9 to 12. Classical Conversations Elizabethtown will host an open house on Tuesday, Nov. 19. Registration for the open house can be found on the Upcoming Events page at www.classicalconversations.com. For more information, readers may contact director Jana MacKay at 717-875-5304 or CCEtown@gmail.com.

DAR Grant Supports Mansion Renovation

FREE DELIVERY - $100 OR MORE

With the support of the Donegal Chapter of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR), DAR approved a Special Project Grant to restore the main visitor door entrance of the Haldeman Mansion, 230 Locust Grove Road, Bainbridge. The Haldeman Mansion Preservation Society (HMPS) was awarded $2,469 on Oct. 8, 2018, for the project, which included the installation of a stone threshold. The mansion’s six-panel Cross and Bible door was renovated with its original strap hinges and forged iron door lock with an elbow lever latch. DAR was founded in 1890 to promote patriotism, preserve American history, and support better education for the nation’s children. Its members are descended from the patriots who won American independence during the Revolutionary War. DAR has more than 185,000 members in approximately 3,000 chapters worldwide. To learn more about the DAR, readers may visit www.dar.org. Information about applying for a Special Projects Grant is available at www.dar.org/grants. HMPS president Ken Beard noted that the renovation and DAR’s support have enhanced HMPS’ efforts to restore and maintain the Haldeman Mansion for future generations. HMPS’ mission is to
