Putting mindfulness into practice BY CATHY MOLITORIS

here’s no doubt the world is full of conflict and stress, but Kim Wilder is working to bring inner peace, one person at a time. Wilder is hosting new programs at Donegal Substance Abuse Alliance (DSAA) that focus on mindfulness. Family Yoga and Mindfulness is a drop-in program for children ages 3 to 5 and their families. It is held on Thursdays from 9 to 10 a.m. at DSAA, 78 E. Main St., Mount Joy. The class includes breathing techniques, poses, games, mindfulness practice and songs. A program for teenage girls is offered on Mondays from 4 to 5 p.m. Participants must be referred by a therapist, school or organization for the program, which focuses on mindfulness and yoga. “In the world we live in, everything is moving so fast,” Wilder said. “We need to be able to pause and create some space to slow down. Mindfulness gives us the gift of presence, to really be able to experience life in this moment.” She noted that the motivation for starting the program for teen girls came from her vast experience as a yoga instructor and her training as a yoga therapist. “I wanted to create a space for teen girls to be comfortable being vulnerable,” she said. “We use mindfulness and yoga to build self-esteem and compassion and to navigate through the challenges of what it’s like to be a teenage girl in the world today. We use some of these skills to reduce anxiety, self-regulate and be more present.” At the family yoga class, Wilder focuses on helping both parents and children become more mindful. “I teach them how to integrate mindfulness into their home life,” she stated. Wilder, who also leads private classes focused on yoga and the

Homes for the holidays BY CATHY MOLITORIS

Get in the holiday spirit, pick up some decorating inspiration and take a peek inside Marietta homes during the Marietta Candlelight Tour. The event will take place on Sunday, Dec. 3, from 11 a.m to 7 p.m. Eight private homes and various historic buildings will be featured on the tour.

“The homes are all varied in style again this year,” said Jason Spickler, co-chair of the tour committee. “Many of the homes have been on our tour in the past, but with new owners, guests can expect to see new decorating styles and renovations to some of the houses that they may have seen in past years.” Homes on the tour include 574 W. Market St., a house built See Homes pg 2

The home at 276 W. Market St. is one of the sites featured on the Marietta Candlelight Tour.

Kim Wilder with Blaze, her canine yoga companion

12 Steps for men and women in recovery, has been teaching mindfulness in schools for more than a decade. She noted that her programs are welcoming to everyone, no matter a person’s experience or background. “A big part of what I bring to my yoga class is the idea of acceptance,” she said. “It’s welcoming to all body types and all people.” Both the program for teen girls and the family yoga class are funded by a grant from Touchstone Foundation in Lancaster. “They focus on mental health and wellness,” explained DSAA executive director Stacy Emminger. “They recently put out a call for applications for micro-grants for programs that benefit youth mental

wellness. I knew the work Kim does is a good fit, so I applied.” Wilder said she hopes her programs help people find a sense of calm in a stressful world. She likes to reference a philosophy by author and meditation expert Sharon Salzberg, who talks about how someone can positively influence everything within a 3-foot radius. “You can’t fix big scale, international problems, but by focusing on your 3-foot radius, you can make a difference in the world,” Wilder said. “You can share kindness and be more present with the people that are right in your space.” For more information on DSAA programs, visit www.dsasquared.org or search for “Donegal Substance Abuse Alliance” on Facebook.

’Tis the season to shop local BY CATHY MOLITORIS

Lancaster County’s economy is driven by small, local businesses. According to data from EDC Lancaster County, the county is home to more than 13,000 businesses, 97% of which have fewer than 100 employees. Truly, local businesses are at the heart of Lancaster County communities. What better way to celebrate the diversity, uniqueness and creativity of independent, local businesses than by supporting

The home will be decorated in natural materials. At 276 W. Market St., a home built in 1872 will be highlighted. It is typical of the brick and frame homes constructed in Marietta in the period of prosperity following the Civil War. Interior features on the tour will include collections of cut glass, Quimper ware and hat pins. “Many of the businesses and organizations in town are doing special events that coincide with the tour,” Spickler noted. “From restaurant specials and store displays to carriage rides, holiday shopping and special entertainment, this is another way that our town comes together to make this event special for those coming to visit Marietta for the tour.”

Consider a gift card to a local business, restaurant, or smaller food merchant so your loved ones can splurge on themselves and possibly discover a new favorite location. Additionally, subscriptions to small businesses such as health clubs and massage therapy services can be the gift that keeps on giving for recipients, providing ongoing benefits to the business, as well. Purchasing gifts and gift cards isn’t the only way to provide support to local businesses during this festive season. While you’re shopping retailers, consider dining out at local eateries, whether that means trying a new venue or patronizing an old favorite. Holiday meals and gatherings can also be catered by area restaurants, which provides the double benefit of simplifying the hosts’ to-do lists while supporting the local economy. Jenn Knepper knows a good idea when she sees one. Sixteen years ago, Knepper read about a unique gift fair being staged in Harrisburg by a women’s group. She reached out to the group, and after some thought, she came to the conclusion that the concept would be something that could benefit the Lancaster County community as well. Fast forward to 2023 and the annual Gifts That Give Hope (GTGH) alternative gift fair is alive, well and thriving. The event is known for its ability to bring nonprofits together, its unique approach to gift giving and its propensity for fostering hope. “We want people to think more about the things they buy and what goes into them,” said Knepper. “The gift fair is a connection point for people to find out about people who are working to make the world a better place. I describe it as a live version of a gift catalog, except you walk into the event. We want people to learn more about the issues at people’s hearts.” This season’s GTGH gift fair will be presented on Sunday, Dec. 10, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Participants in the upcoming Gifts That Give Hope alternative gift fair include (from left) Katie Buckwalter and Gustavo Valdez of Kairos Ministries Guatemala, organizer Jenn Knepper and Luisa Tapia of My Peruvian Treasures.

at the Farm and Home Center, 1383 Arcadia Road, Lancaster. Nearly 40 nonprofits and a dozen marketplace vendors are expected to be there. Food trucks will be stationed outside to enhance the atmosphere. “Have you ever seen someone who has no hope?” said Gustavo Valdez, president of Kairos Ministries Guatemala, one of the participating nonprofits. “That is a person who has no future, no way out. Hope is a way to tell people that there is a light at the end of the tunnel. With hope,

vendors, nonprofits and people coming and going, but the event has always stayed true to its mission by placing humans ahead of material goods. “I want people to have a sense of hope and realize there’s another way to do the holidays,” said Knepper, a nurse by profession. “For me, it’s refreshing when people do things a different way. I don’t have to go with the rat race that the normal status quo of the holidays bring.” “I don’t like the emphasis on materialism,” she added. “The fair redefines giving. My parents have always been minimalists. I started giving them charitable contributions as gifts even before the fair began. there’s a reason for tomorrow.” Perhaps the best ways to describe the gifts that will be available at GTGH’s fair are environmentally friendly, ethically sourced and meaningful. There are tuitions, mentorship programs, books, therapeutic camps and charitable donations that can be purchased in someone’s name. It takes the concept of being more blessed to give than to receive to a whole other level. “I’ve been blessed in so many ways. Giving helps me not forget where I’m coming from,” said Luisa Tapia, founder of My Peruvian Treasures, one of the gift fair’s marketplace vendors. “We almost have a duty to give. It’s really connected to love. When I give, I always receive more in return. It’s almost like planting seeds.” Over the years, GTGH’s alternative gift fair has changed and evolved, with

PennDOT announces “Innovations Challenge” open to all students in grades 9 through 12, regardless of their school’s learning model. For this year’s challenge, students are asked to develop a plan for the replacement of an aging multi-lane roadway that will reconnect previously separated neighborhoods and incorporates community needs, such as accommodating bicycle and pedestrian traffic, allowing for new business development and ensuring the smooth flow of traffic. The

proposed solution should also consider additional costs to restore the affected community. Regional Innovations Challenge winners will be selected and invited to present their solutions to the PennDOT secretary and a panel of judges, who will determine the statewide winner. For this year’s challenge, the Associated Pennsylvania Constructors (APC) has donated $2,500 and the

American Council of Engineering Companies of Pennsylvania (ACEC/PA) has donated $1,500 for a combined total award of $4,000 to the statewide winning team. For complete Innovations Challenge details, visit www.penndot.gov/innovation and click on the blue Innovations Challenge tile on the right side of the page. Once we meet a family, we want to be here for the whole family the rest of the way.” GiGi’s Playhouse, Down Syndrome Achievement Center of Lancaster, recently entered into a seven-year agreement to lease a 7,400square-foot space at 2501 Oregon Pike, Lancaster. That building will offer three times the space that GiGi’s Playhouse currently occupies at 2503 Oregon Pike. While the move has already begun, it can’t be completed until a few construction and technical loose ends are tied up at the new location. A grand reopening is tentatively scheduled for Jan. 11, 2024. “It will be a lot better,” said Fitzwater. “Our largest group of individuals with Down syndrome are adults, and now they’re meeting in a playroom full of toys. We’re going to give them their own ageappropriate space. We’ve been running a cooking space, but not in a realistic kitchen. Now, we’re going to have a full kitchen. There will be quiet, distraction-free rooms. It’s going to give more opportunities for our participants to be reached.” In addition to the teaching kitchen, the new space will feature therapeutic play areas, four learning labs for math and literacy tutoring and areas for adult vocational training. Through grants from local foundations and donations from families, friends and local businesses, about half of the $250,000 needed to renovate the new space has already been raised. “Right now, it’s just one big room,” said Fitzwater. “We pretty much do everything on the floor or on the kitchen table. Families are always invited, and siblings are always invited. We keep

We want to keep doing what we’re doing in a better space.” Lancaster is home to one of 57 GiGi’s Playhouses in the United States and Mexico and is the only one located in Pennsylvania. The Oregon Pike location serves families affected by Down syndrome living within an hour’s drive of Lancaster, free of charge. Since the location’s opening in January of 2020, the number of families that Gigi’s Playhouse of Lancaster serves has tripled to about 400. “Down syndrome is just something that happens at conception,” said Fitzwater. “It doesn’t discriminate. Any woman of any age can have a baby with Down syndrome. (The people with Down syndrome) need us to come along side of them and be there for

Orange St., Lancaster, featuring LSO chorusmaster William Wright as the conductor. Performances will be held on Friday, Dec. 1, at 7:30 p.m. and Saturday, Dec. 2, at 2:30 and 7:30 p.m. This year the LSO and chorus will be joined by soloists Amy Nicole Broadbent, soprano; Maren Montalbano, alto; Tyler Tajeda, tenor; and Damian Savaron, bass.
