Upcycled items will make up just one portion of the selection of handmade products at this year’s Christmas Market at Donegal Presbyterian Church, 1891 Donegal Springs Road, Mount Joy. Organizer Kristi Elkner said that the definition of upcycle is to reuse discarded objects or materials to create a Donegal Presbyterian Church, represented by product of a higher quality or (from left) Nancy Ehrhart, Kristi Elkner, Pat value than the original. “I love Garrigan, and Dianna Wills, will host its that. Taking something that biennial Christmas Market from 9 a.m. to someone might not use any- 1 p.m. on Dec. 1. more and making it into lots of upcycling to the beloved children’s new things people can use,” Elkner book “Mr. Willowby’s Christmas Tree.” remarked. calling 717-426-1277. “The 1940s Radio Hour” depicts the final holiday broadcast of the Mutual Manhattan Variety Cavalcade on the New York radio station WOV in December 1942. Johnson noted that the characters in the radio show work day jobs in addition to broadcasting the show at night and are normal people through and through, as opposed to big stars. “It really is an ensemble show,” added Johnson. The performances will also mark the end of an era for SSC, as “The 1940s Radio Hour” is slated to be the final production that takes place at the theater company’s current location. Shows for the 2019 season are slated to be performed in the group’s new space at 133 W. Market St., a former church building that is in the process of being transformed into the Marietta Center for the Arts.

to fit in Mr. Willowby’s parlor, so he cuts off and discards the top only for that tree to travel and get shortened again and again to be placed into the homes of families of bears, rabbits, and mice. In a similar fashion, Elkner gave the example of how people from Donegal Presbyterian ranging in age from 9 to 87 upcycled gently worn shirts and clothing into aprons, napkins, tote bags, and sachets that will be available to purchase at the Christmas Market. Even the buttons from the shirts were utilized for other projects. Old sheet music was transformed into holiday ornaments and decorative items. “It’s just one thing that keeps on going,” said Elkner. This year’s event is set to take place from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 1, at the church. All of the items for sale will be original, handmade wares including fiber arts, jewelry, soaps, face scrubs, lip balm, bath bombs, kitchen products, linens, glass and wooden décor, bows, children’s toys, teacher gifts, catnip mats and

toys, dog biscuits and bandannas, oven mitts, hats, mittens, accessories, hand-knit shawls, greeting cards, and an assortment of baked goods, preserves, and candy. Everything will be arranged in an easy-to-browse boutique style in the fellowship hall, which overlooks the Donegal springs. Elkner noted that in planning for the event, which takes place every other year, organizers aim to ensure that the bulk of the selection will be new items while still including a few favorites from past years. Christmas crackers, for instance, were a previous hit that will be back. The crackers consist of a short cardboard tube wrapped in colorful paper and twisted at both ends to use as stocking stuffers or gift toppers. Cash, checks, and credit cards will be accepted as forms of payment. All proceeds from the Christmas Market will go toward the church’s local missions fund, which is used to support efforts such as short-term housing for individuals in need, Mount Joy Food Bank, East Donegal/Conoy Area Christian Food Bank, and Hands Across the Street at Columbia Presbyterian Church. Off the Streets Susquehanna is a new nonprofit charitable organization in the Columbia area whose mission is to provide assistance for people experiencing homelessness in the Columbia, Wrightsville, Marietta, and Mount Joy areas as they transition to a home of their own. The ministry provides a security deposit, as well as basic furniture and bare essentials, such as beds, dressers, chairs, tables, bedding, household items, and personal care items, for clients to furnish an apartment or home. Clients must be screened through an agency such as Tabor Community Services or Lancaster General Health. Off the Streets works with Tabor and other agencies and churches in Lancaster County to identify homeless individuals and families that have the financial means to pay a monthly rent but may need assistance with upfront money for a security deposit. Off the Streets provides the security deposit directly to the landlord. Generally, the furniture and other essentials are donated. The group accepts donations of new or gently used furniture and household items, such as linens, dishes, pots, pans, bedding, and lamps, on Wednesdays between noon and 3 p.m. All donations are tax-deductible. For more information, readers may contact otssusq@gmail.com or visit www.offthestreetsnow.com. Individuals who need assistance or who know someone who needs assistance may call the United Way Helpline at 211 or any Homeless Service Agency. Off the Streets, a nondenominational organization, has chapters in Pennsylvania, California, and Connecticut, with the hope of launching new chapters across the U.S. It has assisted more than 1,500 people in its four locations since 2016.

Haunted Lantern Tour To Return With “Mortality Within” in” By Chelsea Peifer
Sara Mimnall and Rebecca Wright chose the theme of “Mortality Within” for Columbia’s Haunted Lantern Tour this year because they wanted to introduce people to a not-often-talked-about aspect of the rivertown’s history. The theme will focus on the disease and poverty that struck Columbia and other communities in earlier days, discussing the presence of pesthouses and sanitariums and how much things have changed. “It shows how people suffered more than they had to because they didn’t have the
like we do now,” noted Mimnall. “It will also touch on the Great Depression and how the lack of food (and resources) can change people,” Wright added. Popular characters from past years will also reappear, Wright said, such as William Campbell, a local trapper who died from rabies and is buried in Columbia’s historic Mount Bethel Cemetery. History abounds in the cemetery and the town, and according to Mimnall and Wright, while spooky elements are intertwined on the tour, history is indeed the emphasis. The hourlong guided tours will take place on Friday and Saturday
John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, 23 S. Sixth St., Columbia. Tours will step off every half hour beginning at 6:30 p.m., with the last tour starting at 9:30 p.m. Participants will follow guides to Locust Street and through a loop in the Mount Bethel Cemetery before returning to the church. To purchase tickets, interested individuals may call 717-517-2442. A specific tour time will be designated when tickets are reserved. Organizers strongly encourage people to order tickets in advance. A limited number of tickets may be available on the night of the tours but are not

This year, the Elizabethtown Area Chamber of Commerce (EACC) is spearheading a collaboration between numerous local businesses and organizations to focus holiday efforts under one brand: Christmas TreE-town. EACC executive director Heather Hohenwarter said that the initiative will highlight the many events that take place in the Elizabethtown area during the holiday season. “The idea behind Christmas TreE-town was to curate the many existing events under one banner,” Hohenwarter explained. “It made sense to create a central source of information for families racing to check things off their hectic holiday to-do list, like ‘visit Santa,’ ‘see Christmas lights,’ and ‘buy teachers gifts.’ So why not do it all in charming Elizabethtown?” A website for Christmas TreE-town, www.christmastree -town.com, recently launched and includes a comprehensive events calendar, suggested itineraries, and featured events such as the first-ever Star Barn Village Christmas DriveThrough Light Show opening for the season on Friday, Nov. 23, and longtime traditions like the annual Elizabethtown Holiday Parade, which will begin at 4 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 8. The theme of this year’s parade, “An Old-Fashioned Christmas,” will also be carried out in the inaugural holiday window decorating contest being coordinated by the Chamber. Elizabethtown-area businesses may enter the window decorating contest by registering at www.christmastree-town.com in order for judges to have a complete list of participants to include in judging. The deadline for completed entries will be

Food and beverages will be available to purchase throughout the day for an additional cost, along with tickets to enter to win various giveaways. Mai-Lynn Sahd, executive director of Brittany’s Hope, explained that funds raised through Christmas at the Star Barn Village will go toward building an adaptive living
facility for children with disabilities in Vietnam. According to Sahd, Brittany’s Hope has been working with Ha Tinh Village, an orphanage located in a remote rural region of northern Vietnam, to help provide basic living needs for more than 50 abandoned children. Currently, the orphanage has a separate area for children with profound mental and/or physical disabilities. Sahd noted that in Vietnam, children with disabilities can be left with nowhere to go and nowhere to find dignity. The portion of Ha Tinh Village devoted to housing children with disabilities is in need of upgrades, and Brittany’s Hope has pledged $100,000 to build a facility specifically designed for those with special needs at Ha Tinh Village. Plans for the new facility include a safe living space and bedrooms for up to 28 children, specialized adaptive furniture and bathrooms, a fully equipped physical therapy room, and a common area for the children to move and play. The funds will also allow for trained professionals to help the youths to develop living skills and a nursing station to provide medical care around the clock. Sahd noted that 100 percent of donations toward the project will go directly toward the Ha Tinh Village building project, because all non-program expenses such as fundraising and overhead are covered by a corporate benefactor. LOHF Approves Grant Funding
Adoption Movie Night Slated
Lancaster Osteopathic Health Foundation (LOHF) approved funding to five Lancaster County children’s behavioral health programs on Sept. 25. These five programs are reaching families and their children who have specific mental health needs and for whom access to mental health care may be particularly challenging. The grants totaled $74,375. Community Action Partnership of Lancaster County was awarded $25,000 to expand a partnership between Domestic Violence Services and COBYS that seeks to improve the mental health of children fleeing domestic violence through the use of an evidence-based model. The Seeking Safety program utilizes cognitive behavioral therapy to explore issues such as trauma, addiction, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). The program expansion’s aim is to increase family competency about children’s mental health by aligning the curriculum between parent and child programs and focusing on processing the trauma of experiencing and witnessing domestic violence. Aaron’s Acres received $11,575 to support Aaron’s Acres Plus, a new program to meet the needs of young adults ages 21 to 26 who have developmental disabilities. The new therapeutic program will focus on socialization and communi-

County Prison. Each child receives a needs assessment, case management, and relationship support, along with evaluations before and after receiving services. The program seeks to improve resiliency, connect children and caregivers to community resources, and help mitigate the impact of childhood trauma. LOHF’s grants aim to elevate children’s mental health by supporting local programs that target one or more of the following: improving the delivery of children’s behavioral health care services; enhancing the capacity of parents, families, and caregivers through trainings and support; and improving the capacity of providers to support and treat children. Applicants are encouraged to replicate existing models that have been successful and to work collaboratively with others to improve mental health services for children and youths from birth to age 26. An additional $100,000 in grant funds will be available in 2019. Online applications are now available and must be submitted online by Friday, March 1, 2019. Tax-exempt community benefit organizations serving Lancaster County are eligible to apply. To learn more, readers may visit www.lohf.org/ grants. This program will provide opportunities for individuals to interact with one another and engage in meaningful activities in a community setting. Lancaster Health Center received $15,000 for the Lancaster County Reach Out and Read initiative, which seeks to improve early literacy skills and make early literacy an integral part of pediatric checkups in early childhood. The initiative aims to promote language development in the first five years of life, as well as parentchild shared reading. Lancaster Public Library was awarded $12,800 to connect children and their families to the library and to offer valuable information from community professionals through the Play, Learn, and Grow Series. Early literacy, nutrition, and child development are a few of the important topics covered during the two five-week sessions. With a focus on non-traditional library users, as well as new and young parents, the workshops foster relationships between community resource providers and those who need them most. Indians Top Palmyra F by Vaughn Brown
It began faintly, a far-off disturbance on an otherwise still Saturday evening. Slowly, however, a wall of noise began building and distinguished itself as an onslaught of sirens breaking the nighttime silence. For any Mount Joy resident outdoors after 9:00 Saturday, it wasn’t a catastrophic accident that brought out a seemingly endless stream of emergency vehicles but rather a celebratory parade down Main Street honoring Donegal’s field hockey team and their recently earned PIAA title. Waving from a coach charter and escorted in front by numerous police vehicles and behind by a large contingent of fire trucks and tankers, the 2018 Class 2A champions rode a wave of blaring sirens and flashing lights through town, eventually ending at the high school on Koser Road. This show of community support came in the wake of Donegal’s thrilling 1-0 overtime victory versus Palmyra Saturday night at Whitehall’s Zephyr Sports Complex in Allentown. Two weeks after winning a record fifth straight District Three championship, the lady Indians brought home their second State championship in three years after bowing out in the semifinals in 2017. The win not only marked the end of the line for seven seniors, but also of head coach Jessica Shellenberger who is stepping down from the helm of a program she built essentially from the ground up. Key among those graduating is Mackenzie Allessie who finishes her high school career as the all-time National High School scoring record holder with 351 goals, but equally as important to the team’s efforts were co-captain Lily Saunders, Ruby Hartley, Cayla Homsher, Aliza Johns,
Amber Lookenbill, and Catherine Moran, all of whom contributed greatly on the season, as well as team manager Lizzie Barrick. Despite all the noise on the streets of Mount Joy Saturday night, what resonated the loudest was the satisfying thud of Allessie’s overtime winner hitting the board 8:59 into the period. Seemingly deciding that enough was enough, Allessie picked up the rebound of Palmyra’s fourth corner in the extra frame and dribbled coast-to-coast where a trio of defenders awaited. Working her way through two and around the third, she drew keeper Ashton Byrd, who made nine saves on the night, out from the cage to challenge but the senior got by her right side, sending a reverse into the cage and the Donegal players and fans into celebration mode. The Indians opened the match applying offensive pressure and earned five quick corners, all of which were defended well by the Cougars who only managed three shots of their own. Johns, who stepped into the cage this year to replace all-star Katie Jean, was phenomenal on the season and turned away all three including a diving save to preserve the shutout not only on the night, but for the entire tournament. “Aliza has been nothing short of amazing, she deserves a ton of credit,” raved Shellenberger. “She has always been a great keeper, she just got caught behind KJ for three years. I’d be surprised if four shutouts through states is not a record!” Working in tandem with Johns were Hartley and Homsher who helped anchor the stingy Donegal defense which constantly swarmed the Cougars and kept them from gaining any kind of traction offensively. Unfortunately, the Palmyra defense proved just as tough
seemingly showing only one crack near the end of the first half. In that moment, Allessie worked her way into the top of the circle and despite a Palmyra triple team fired off a shot that got by Byrd with under 10 minutes on the clock. However, the officials huddled and determined that she had stepped out of the circle and overturned the score. Both Allessie and Saunders managed to get off solo shots before the end of the half but were denied by Byrd on both attempts. “Mack is certainly a special player but there’s no one…that can watch our team play and think it’s all her,” noted Shellenberger. “The way our team moved the ball and defended together was exceptional. They all deserve a ton of credit. I’m proud of our team!” Prior to their championship victory, Donegal faced off with another familiar foe in Twin Valley last Tuesday in a semifinal matchup at Warwick High School. In that contest it was Catherine Moran who came up big for the lady Indians, scoring once in each half for the 2-0 win. While Allessie had her share of looks and shots, sometimes it just doesn’t go your way as the senior had two caroms off the post and one sail over the cage. Enter Moran, who made her way in front of the cage on a Donegal corner and collected a rebound of the pads of keeper Talayna Viscuso which she eased across the line for the 1-0 lead. In the second half, it was another corner that proved helpful to Moran when Saunders, after taking the insert, noticed that Allessie was marked by a Twin Valley defender and took a shot instead of passing to her. Moran’s knack for getting in front of the cage paid off again as she put her stick on the shot and deflected it in for the insurance.

This year’s Gift Fair will feature 30 local, national, and international nonprofits, including Lancaster Lebanon Habitat for Humanity, Lancaster County Reach Out and Read Coalition, HOPE International, North Star Initiative, Heifer International, Feed My Starving Children, Music for Everyone, Assets, The Edible Classroom, and more. Beards for Brothers will benefit from a fundraiser during the month of November. Local police departments and first responders in Lancaster County will join to raise funds. The campaign was started by Officer Bill Watt, who heads up the East Hempfield Police Department K-9 program. Each year, officers select a first responder or organization from the community who is currently battling cancer or provides care to those battling cancer. This year, the campaign will raise money for Officer Wendell Metzler of the New Holland Borough Police Department, a 25year veteran of law enforcement, a longtime volunteer and an emergency medical technician. In June, it was discovered he had stage IV melanoma. Metzler has undergone numerous radiation treatments and is currently receiving aggressive immunotherapy treatments to battle the disease. Metzler has been unable to serve his community, and the cost of treatment is significant. Throughout November, Faulkner Chevrolet staff members will also grow out their facial hair and collect funds through the program’s GoFundMe page. The goal is to make a sizeable donation and join members of Akron Borough, Columbia Borough, East Cocalico Township, East Hempfield Township, Elizabethtown Borough, Lititz Borough, Lancaster City, Manheim Borough, Manor Township, Millersville University, New Holland Borough, Southern Regional, Strasburg Borough, West Hempfield Township, West Lampeter Township, and Quarryville Borough police departments, along with Lancaster County Park Rangers andvolunteer firefighters, EMS, and dispatchers from throughout Lancaster

“We are excited to welcome Alice Hoffman for this year’s Junior League of Lancaster author’s luncheon because she is a very well-known author whose books are familiar to a wide range of people,” said event chair Laura McGarry. “In addition, her newest novel, ‘The Rules of Magic,’ has received a lot of praise. It is exciting to welcome an author who has recently released such a great book, especially one that is tied to as familiar a story as ‘Practical Magic.’” Fans of Hoffman’s novels are invited to meet the author at the luncheon, which will be held on Friday, Nov. 30, at the Lancaster Marriott at Penn Square, 25 S. Queen St., Lancaster. Doors will open at 11 a.m., and the program will begin at noon. Attendees may purchase beverages and place bids in a silent auction prior to the sit-down meal. Hoffman will be available to sign her books and take photos before lunch, and she will answer questions after her presentation. A local bookseller will be on-site with many of Hoffman’s titles for sale. Beginning in 1977 with the publication of her first novel, “Property Of,” Hoffman has published nearly 40 books for readers in a range of ages. “Practical Magic” was published in 1995 and was made into a feature film starring Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman in 1998. The story’s prequel, “The Rules of Magic,” was released in 2017. “We hope to hear Ms. Hoffman speak about her experience as an author, the differences between writing adult and Young Adult books, and the role that libraries have had in her life,” McGarry remarked. McGarry noted that this is the 16th annual author’s luncheon and one of the Junior League’s fundraisers. The proceeds from the event will support the mission and vision of the Junior League of Lancaster by helping to promote volunteerism, develop

Current and past projects include Girls + STEM, the Rain Garden Initiative, Wheatland and Rock Ford Plantation restorations, the Children’s Room at Lancaster County Library, and the Handson House Children’s Museum of Lancaster outdoor classroom. In addition, this year the Junior League has partnered with Reach Out and Read, which is a program that provides new books to children from birth to age 5 during well-child pediatrician visits at various local doctor’s offices. Luncheon guests are invited to bring new, age-appropriate books to donate to Reach Out and Read. Each book may be traded for a free entry in a prize drawing, up to three entries per person. The Library System of Lancaster County is discontinuing the Telephone Renewal Service that allows library users to renew their books and other library items by a designated telephone number. The service will be discontinued on Monday, Dec. 31. The decision to terminate the service was made due to outdated software and a decline in usage. Despite the discontinuation of this service, library borrowers still have three ways to renew their items: through their online library account, at any of the libraries’ circulation desks, or by calling any local public library in Lancaster County. More information may be received at w w w . l a n c a s t e r libraries.org.

The Lancaster County Career and Technology Center (LCCTC) FFA Chapter held officer elections for the 2018-19 school year on Sept. 12. The 2017-18 treasurer, Caitlyn Schiewe, presided over the elections as the representative from her retiring officer team. The newly elected officer team is as follows: Erica Castetter as president, Destiney Lundy as vice president, Maya Pieters as secretary, Mya Swift as treasurer, and Chloe Masters as reporter. LCCTC FFA members interested in running for an office completed an application and were interviewed by a nominating committee, which was a panel of three individuals involved with agriculture. These industry partners were all members of FFA during their time in high school, and they recommended the slate of officers after the interview process. Their recommendation was then voted on and passed by LCCTC FFA members. The chapter was scheduled to hold its first meeting of the school year on Sept. 17 to develop a program of activities and assign all of the members to committees. This year, the LCCTC FFA plans to attend several local fairs and leadership conferences. The chapter intends to hold fundraising events, participate in community service work, and plan the annual community Fun Fair at school in May. The first community service project will be a blanket drive in memory of Schiewe’s younger brother, Zane Witmer, who passed away while the family was vacationing in Florida. New blankets may be dropped off at the Willow Street campus of the Lancaster County Career and Technology Center. For more information about the blanket drive, readers may visit www.Blankets4Zane.org. All of the members of the LCCTC FFA Chapter are enrolled in the Animal Production Science and Technology Program at the Willow Street campus of the LCCTC. For more information, readers may contact the adviser, Lori Hess, at lhess@lancasterctc.edu or 717-464-7050, ext. 7067.
