Mount Joy tree is the star of Penn Square BY CATHY MOLITORIS

Photo by The Jenna Carroll Collective The lead characters of “Hello, Dolly!”

Joy runs through “Hello, Dolly!” his show is classic Broadway at its best,” said Becky Groff, who plays the title character in “Hello, Dolly!” “It’s just fun. The songs are singable. The show is heartwarming, but never sad. This is not a ‘walk away thinking in deep about your life’ show. This is a show you walk away from singing and smiling, and who doesn’t love that?” “Hello, Dolly!” will be performed at Susquehanna Stage, 133 W. Market St., Marietta, on select dates from Friday, Dec. 8, through Sunday, Dec. 17. The story follows Dolly, a widow socialite-turned-matchmaker who

“T

works to find matches for others while navigating her own love story. “The show is technically about the exploits of Dolly, but that’s not really what it’s about,” Groff stated. “It’s about finding love in unexpected places.”

“It’s really a great show and it’s going to be very enjoyable for audiences.” It’s also about finding where you belong, said Amanda Trusty, who plays Irene Molloy. “A main theme in this show is chosen family,” she said.

Groff noted that many of the characters in the show are stuck in jobs or roles that don’t make them happy. “I think a theme is ‘Don’t wait to live,’” she said. “Don’t wait until you retire to have a life, because life is too short.” When the cast began rehearsals for the show, director Keifer Kemmerly emphasized the overarching emotion he wanted audiences to take away from the show, Trusty said. “His whole thesis is ‘joy,’” she shared. “Everything in the show is infused with joy.” Josh Glacken, who plays Horace Vandergelder in the show, said he was familiar with “Hello, Dolly!” and he was initially hesitant to audition. A tree that served as a memorial for one family for decades will now bring holiday joy to thousands. The 40-foot Norway spruce tree selected as the Christmas tree in Lancaster’s Penn Square was planted in a Mount Joy yard almost 25 years ago. “In May of 1999, my dad died, and Sheetz Funeral Home had a living tree delivered to us in his memory after the funeral,” recalled Greg Schneider, the son of the late Arthur and Mary Jane Schneider. “It People admire the tree in Penn Square in was probably only 6 or Lancaster city. 8 inches tall. I planted it for Mom, significantly, reaching a final height but I wasn’t thinking ahead, and I of about 50 feet. Schneider trimmed planted it only about 12 feet from it back a few times as it encroached on the house, but he didn’t do any the house.” Over the years, the tree grew other maintenance on it.

Children from Glossbrenner United Methodist Church display some of the crafts that will be available to make at a Family Christmas Night.

Rockey said. “Please come and enjoy everything with us.” The event will feature crafts, food and more. “This will be a wonderful time of fellowship, food and crafts for all ages and skill levels. Homemade crafts make the best memorable decorations year after year or they make great gifts,” Rockey shared, adding that a gift-wrapping and card-making station will also be on-site. People are invited to pose in front of a Christmas backdrop for holiday photos as well. “A family photo with a Christmas backdrop and Christmas picture frame is always fun to look back over the years and see how the kids have grown every Christmas,” Rockey said. And if all that crafting and creativity have worked up your appetite, a variety of food options will be offered at the event. “We will have delicious beef barbecue sandwiches, popcorn, decorate your own cookie and a hot chocolate bar,” she noted. Rockey emphasized that the event may be called “family” night, but it’s for everyone. “Toddler to senior citizens can find enjoyment in this event,” she said. “Come hang the entire two hours or just drop in between 5 and 7. We would love to have you.” She also invites people to the church’s Candlelight Christmas Eve service at 7 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 24. “We have something for all ages, and our doors are open to everyone, regardless of where you are at on your faith journey,” she stated. Holding events like the Family Christmas Night helps the congregation fulfill its goal of connecting with the community, Rockey said. “We enjoy being a light to our community in these difficult times and dark times going on in the world,” she commented. “We enjoy giving back. God has blessed us so much in many ways; we want to be a blessing to others so they can feel and

know Christ’s love as well.” For more information on the Family Christmas Night, follow Glossbrenner United Methodist Church on Facebook. scan this code for more local news townlively.com

“There are a lot of holiday activities happening across York and Lancaster counties,” said Megan Salvatore, visitor service representative for Susquehanna National Heritage Area (SNHA). For the first time, SNHA has created a Holiday Bucket List, highlighting 25 events throughout the region. SNHA staff members had created bucket lists previously, but none focused solely on holiday events, Salvatore explained. “Susquehanna National Heritage Area has a mission to connect the people and communities of Lancaster and York County in order to celebrate our shared heritage, encourage preservation and promote sustainable economic growth,” she stated. “The Holiday Bucket List invites people to immerse themselves in the diverse holiday traditions of our national heritage area. By participating in the bucket list activities, you can support a local business and our many arts and culture

organizations.” The list provides activities to help people get into the holiday spirit, Salvatore commented. “We encourage residents and visitors to utilize the list as a tool to keep your family busy discovering something new or to show visiting family around during holiday visits,” she said. “Many of the activities stretch from now until the new year.” Activities on the list include catching a holiday performance at a local theater, driving through holiday lights at the Barnstormers’ stadium in Lancaster and watching winter wildlife at a local nature preserve. On Saturday, Dec. 9, Columbia Crossing River Trails Center, 41 Walnut St., will host a Natural Ornament Making program as part of the Bucket List. “Families are invited to join us between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. to make ornaments from acorns, pinecones, twigs, hemlock cones and wood slices,” Salvatore said, noting that a small donation is requested to help cover expenses. “It’s a great way to deck the halls.”

Seeing Santa around towns in Lancaster and York counties is one of the activities on the Holiday Bucket List.

Anyone who completes at least five tasks on the Holiday Bucket List can pick up an SNHA sticker prize, she said. People are encouraged to share photos of activities from the list on social media and then submit a digital form at https://susqnha.org /susquehanna-nha-holiday -bucket-list or stop by Columbia Crossing in person to claim the sticker. The Holiday Bucket List will be active through Jan. 31, 2024. Salvatore explained that the list was created as a collaborative effort among SNHA staff members. “We

tried to cover as many (activities) as possible,” she said. “It was important to showcase the long-standing traditions and highlight our riverfront communities. The Holiday Bucket List is engineered to explore partners and sites offering a diverse mix of heritage, culture, recreation and libations unique to the holiday season in the Susquehanna NHA.” A paper copy of the list can be picked up at Columbia Crossing, or a digital version may be downloaded by visiting the aforementioned website.

removed from the Mount Joy property, transported by flatbed truck to Penn Square and installed there. A tree lighting ceremony was held in late November, and the tree will remain in the square through the rest of the year before being mulched and spread throughout parks in the city. “We will definitely go down and see it,” Schneider said,

noting that 10 feet of the tree had to be removed before it was set up in the square because it was too big. “I knew that sooner or later, it was going to have to be removed at the house, and who knows what would have been done with it? I think it’s nice this is where it ended up, and other people have told me they think it’s pretty cool, too.”

contacted Miller to see what he thought about suggesting the tree, and Miller agreed it was a good idea. The Lancaster city arborist came out to see the tree, and although he told Schneider it was one of the nicest trees he’s seen in a long time, he also mentioned that it was one of three or four in the running to be this year’s city Christmas tree. Ultimately, Schneider’s tree made the cut (pun intended), and it was

Several times, Schneider thought about having the tree removed because it was so close to the house, but there was always a large expense involved, along with the effort of hauling it away, so he put it off. In 2021, he sold the house to Phillip Miller and moved into a retirement community in Lititz. Earlier this year, he read a newspaper article about how Lancaster city was looking for a tree for the square, and he thought of the spruce. He

market. “Some will be selling German candies and food items,” Fasnacht said. “Others will have traditional German Christmas decorations, nutcrackers and Advent calendars. We try to focus on local talent, so we’ll have artists, photographers and people who make handmade ornaments as well.” Entertainment will include performances by the Schuhplattlers dancing group, featuring adults; the Kindergruppe children’s dancing group; and the AllweilJung folk dancing group. “Our mixed chorus and men’s chorus members will be walking around singing Christmas carols,” Fasnacht added. Inside, a kids’ craft station will be set up for children to make pinecone ornaments rolled in birdseed, and for the second year, a Kinder

Shoppe will offer low-cost items for children to purchase as holiday gifts. “That was very well received last year, so we decided to do it again,” Fasnacht remarked. “Things are donated by our members, and kids can buy something for very little money, like 25 cents.” Admission to the Christkindlmarkt is free. Onsite parking will be available at the event for a fee, and off-site parking will also be offered, with a shuttle bus to the site. Fasnacht invites everyone out to enjoy the event, adding, “This is a great way to experience a little bit of German culture right in your backyard.” For more information about the Christkindlmarkt, visit www.lancaster liederkranz.com.

In the mood for some authentic Schweinshaxe? Have a hankering for some Kassler Rippchen? Or maybe you’d just like to know more about both of those food items. You can sample the German specialties (pork knuckle and smoked pork chops, respectively) when Lancaster Liederkranz holds its annual Christkindlmarkt. The event will be held on Sunday, Dec. 10, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on the grounds of the Liederkranz, 722 Chiques Road, Manheim. It will feature vendors, music, entertainment and lots of food. “Outside, we will have pierogies, wurst sandwiches, homemade soup, Gluhwein, German beer and hot chocolate,” said Elise Fasnacht, event chair. “Inside, we will have a sit-down meal with beef roulade, pork schnitzel, Schweinshaxe, Oktoberfest chicken, Kassler Rippchen and apple strudel for dessert.” Food will be available to eat in or for takeout. Four varieties of homemade pierogies will be for sale - mushroom and cheese, potato and cheese, pork and sauerkraut and apple cinnamon - and new this year, frozen potato and cheese pierogies will be sold to go. On Saturday, Dec. 9, you just might hear “Jingle Bells,” “Deck the Halls,” “Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree” and more throughout the streets of Elizabethtown. The GEARS Holiday Parade will step off at 4 p.m. with a theme of “Holiday Songs.” The parade will process down Market Street in Elizabethtown, from West Bainbridge Street to Winnemore and Mechanics alleys. Anywhere along Market is a good spot to catch all the action,

said GEARS program coordinator Lee Eckert, noting, “Most people like to be near the judges’ stand next to the E-town post office. That’s where the groups will perform.” He added that the parade’s theme is bringing out the creativity of participants. “Groups are really focusing on the theme, so it should be a very energetic parade,” he commented. Participants will include local churches, Boy and Girl Scout troops, sports teams from Elizabethtown Area

Local high school bands will be a highlight of the GEARS Holiday Parade.

High School and Middle School and high school bands. “ We also will have a few groups with horses and dogs,” Eckert stated. “We will have cool old cars and firetrucks.” The parade is sponsored by Mars Wrigley. “They will be donating all the candy you see and receive in the parade,” Eckert said. “They have definitely enhanced the event.” As the parade wraps up, viewers can expect some surprises, he revealed. “Santa will be the final event of the parade, and you’ll have to

come out and see how he will enter the parade this year,” Eckert shared. After the parade, people are invited to join Santa at his cottage on the square, where he will meet the community. The parade is an opportunity to join in community fun and support the individuals and organizations who participate, Eckert stated. “It’s a great way to kick off the holiday season in Elizabethtown,” he said. Making a good thing better BY ANN MEAD ASH

Saint Joseph’s University expands offerings to Lancaster County Joseph DiAngelo, dean of the Erivan K. Haub School of Business at Saint Joseph’s University in Philadelphia, is excited about what the school can bring to Lancaster County residents as the organization looks forward to merging with the Pennsylvania College of Health Sciences, 850 Greenfield Road, Lancaster, in January. “Several years ago … our strategic planning was looking to expand into health care,” recalled DiAngelo. “We were interested in affiliating with programs that are already accredited, and we were interested in nursing.” After a successful partnership with Lancaster General Hospital, providing business courses for doctors and senior administrators, strategists saw possibilities in the Pennsylvania College of Health Sciences, but DiAngelo sees the acquisition as bringing opportunities to Lancaster residents. “Nothing is going to change in Lancaster,” said DiAngelo. The goal, rather, is to embrace what exists

and offer more. “We are one of the largest business schools in Philadelphia,” DiAngelo pointed out, adding that the school offers the largest food marketing program in the country, along with health administration, insurance, and hospitality programs. “ We think there are some natural niches there for us,” said DiAngelo. The dean pointed out that the school’s redesigned stackable Master of Business Administration program allows students to earn the degree or certificate that meets their needs and the needs of their employer. “Our programs are synchronous, so students interact with faculty members and not just the computer,” said DiAngelo, who added that students can go back and watch a previous class, which works better for people who travel or work hours that do not allow them to be in class each week. “Courses can be taken at their leisure,” he explained. “Students can get credentials along the way for their companies.” DiAngelo pointed out that while Saint Joseph’s is the largest of the Jesuit-sponsored schools in the U.S.,

which are overseen by members of an apostolic Roman Catholic community, one need not be Catholic to attend. “The Jesuits pride themselves on excellence,” he noted. “The Jesuit principles of caring for the individual person and making the world a better place apply. Those are things we emphasize.” DiAngelo said that in the business school those principles are held high. “We have a focus on ethics - especially business ethics,” he said. According to DiAngelo, representatives of the school have been in contact with the Lancaster Chamber of Commerce. He pointed out that there are four hospital systems surrounding Lancaster County. “We are looking to offer health administration programs and programs in business for doctors so they can run their practices and hospitals

better.” For more information on programs offered by Saint Joseph’s Haub School of Business, readers may visit www.sju.edu/haub-school -business.

“Hello, Dolly!” from pg 1 “Honestly, I didn’t love the show, but I had only seen it performed at a highschool level,” he admitted. “This is very different, and I’m so happy I’m a part of this. It’s really a great show and it’s going to be very enjoyable for audiences.” Sean Reynolds, who plays Cornelius Hackl in the show, echoed Glacken’s thoughts, adding, “Sometimes people might think with golden age musicals that they’re dated. I don’t think any of the material in this show is dated. The songs, the energy, the plot - it’s all very translatable to a modern audience.” The cast of “Hello, Dolly!” features 21 actors, which is on the smaller side for a typical production of the musical, said Reynolds. “It’s nice, because every-
