Beautiful weather with temperatures in the 50s graced last year’s New Year’s Day charity motorcycle ride along the Susquehanna River, and organizers are crossing their fingers for more of the same this time around. “Last year we raised over $35,000, and it was our biggest year for the amount of money raised. That brings our total for the 10 years we’ve had this ride to over $160,000 that we’ve raised for veterans,” stated organizer Tyler Stumpf. Billy Hecht, who started the

event with Stumpf and some other friends, emphasized that 100% of proceeds from the event go toward helping veterans who utilize services at the Lebanon VA Medical Center, with no overhead or administrative costs. The 11th annual New Year’s Day motorcycle ride will take off from the Walter S. Ebersole American Legion Post 185, located at 255 W. Main St., Mount Joy, at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 1, 2020. The registration fee, which is a set per-person donation, will include a meal at the conclusion of the ride. See New Year’s Day Ride pg 2

One tradition the ride has maintained through the years is the naming of one rider as “Baby New Year,” who must ride the first mile dressed in a baby costume. That rider has the honor of selecting next year’s Baby New Year. “This year we have our first female Baby New Year,” Stumpf noted. Elizabethtown resident Larry Witters, the 2019 Baby New Year, relegated the role to Teresa Ardini of Manheim for 2020. Ardini is creating her own costume and will announce next year’s lucky - or not so lucky,

Registration will open at 10 a.m. at Post 185. Breakfast food and coffee will be available for purchase. The Post 185 Ladies Auxiliary will serve homemade soup before the ride. Vendors will offer items for purchase including commemorative shirts, sweatshirts, and patches for vests. “Before the ride, we say the Pledge of Allegiance, and with that many people there Main Street just becomes completely quiet,” Stumpf shared. Approximately 475 bikes rode in last year’s event.

care expenses, housing problems, or other expenses that could squeeze an individual or a family to the breaking point. “This is for the family that is doing everything right,” explained Lapp. “They’re not living beyond their means … (but) they are one furnace breaking down or alternator failing from going under.” To ease the burdens of those in need, ETB founders plan to form partnerships with churches and nonprofit organizations that know the needs of the local community and have the personnel to screen requests and distribute funds appropriately. These organizations would submit grant requests to ETB. “(The organizations) find the need, (do an intake,) and submit the request to us,” said High. “Someone might not be able to pay their rent, and (they) come

Mindy Lapp, Jack Herr, and Sean High, founders of Ease the Burden (ETB), have created a brochure to help county residents understand the mission of the organization. “This is a flowchart we made to make it simple for people,” explained Lapp. “It’s a way to fund needs in the Lancaster community by filling in the gaps that might not necessarily be covered by most organizations,” added Herr. ETB was founded to help county residents who do not need help under normal circumstances, but who have come up against a hardship. “We are here for the working class who maybe by a few hundred dollars a year don’t qualify for help,” said Lapp. Hardships might include health

depending on the weather honoree after the ride. The approximately 25- to 30mile ride follows a scenic route along the Susquehanna River through Marietta and Bainbridge. The ride will finish at the Elizabethtown American Legion Post 329, 240 N. Hanover St., Elizabethtown, where a traditional pork and sauerkraut meal will be served in the banquet hall. A silent auction will feature plenty of motorcycle merchandise, gift cards, and other items, including a T-shirt quilt created by TLC-Quilting. Another fun tradition is the presentation of a plaque to the individual who travels the

farthest to participate in the ride. Motorcyclists have come from Philadelphia, Baltimore, and beyond in past years. The winner of last year’s plaque rode from his home north of the Poconos. Organized by members of Post 185, the ride is open to the public and not only to motorcyclists, but to drivers of any other vehicles who would like to participate to honor veterans. People are also welcome to pay for admission to the meal and afterride festivities. Businesses interested in making a contribution toward the fundraiser for veterans may call Stumpf at 717-468-6197.

to a church for help,” said High. “They may not have the funds, but we could bridge that gap.” Lapp agreed, adding, “ We want to connect churches and ministries to partner with us to get needs met.” High went on to explain that ETB is based on the Old Testament story of Joseph, who filled the grain bins during the years of plenty. “When the famine hit, the grain bins were full,” he said. “That is our concept. We will raise funds to fill the grain bin, and we will have resources there.” High went on to say that when a partner organization finds a need and submits a grant request, ETB should be able to react quickly. ETB founders were inspired by occurrences at Stumptown Mennonite Church, 2813 Stumptown Road, Bird-in-Hand, where High and Herr attend. The first involved a young couple. When the husband died of cancer, the

wife was left with significant medical bills and funeral expenses. Church members spoke to the hospital and funeral home before raising the necessary funds to relieve the widow of the burden. The second situation involved an immigrant couple from Africa. The husband and wife were working and he was attending school, but they were close to having to leave the country because of financial issues. “Someone in the church responded by giving them $500 in cash,” said High. “Ten years later, they are U.S. citizens and homeowners, and he is (working as) a visiting nurse because of that $500.” ETB founders want area residents to know that the grain bin supplies are here for them. “The emphasis is on grassroots … local,” said Herr. “Any donations to Ease the Burden stay here in Lancaster County.” Lapp added that the trio will be working to raise funds. “There are lots of ways to fill the grain bin,” she said. “It’s about relationships, but we hope to hold events, and we hope individuals will see the need and feel led to give,” she said, adding that ETB is already working with small businesses. ETB has a website that offers information about the mission and how the organization works and shares opportunities to donate. Readers who would like to learn more may visit www.ETBLancaster.org.

The menu for the breakfast will be all-you-can-eat pancakes with a topping station, sausage, orange juice, and coffee. Ney noted that the fire company will not sell lunch food during the event, but some vendors will have baked goods and samples. The craft and vendor show will have 40 retailers, offering products like homemade dog biscuits and pet items, wooden decor ladders, wreaths, hand-carved signs, natural salves, embroidery, and blacksmith-made items. “We also have your more everyday vendors such as Mary Kay, Color Street nails, and Tastefully Simple,” Ney said. “We have a little bit of everything and truly something for everybody.” The proceeds from the breakfast and the show will go to the West Hempfield Fire and Rescue Company’s operating budget. “This helps with things such as apparatus maintenance, station maintenance and upkeep, fuel, training classes, and so on,” Ney explained. Snow Removal Tips Posted For Safe Mail Delivery With the approach of winter in Pennsylvania come freezing temperatures, snow, and ice. The U.S. Postal Service is asking customers to help letter carriers deliver mail safely by clearing snow and ice from sidewalks, stairs, and mailboxes. The Postal Service will make every reasonable, safe attempt to deliver mail during and after a storm. However, wintry precipitation can make mail delivery dangerous and slow. Maintaining a clear path to the mailbox - including steps, porches, walkways, and street approach - will help keep letter carriers safe and help them continue to offer consistent delivery service. All customers should keep the approach to and exit from their mailbox or mail slot free of ice and snow. Customers receiving door delivery should make sure their sidewalks, steps, and porches are clear. Customers receiving

Scavenger Hunt Slated Governor Dick Environmental Center, 3283 Pinch Road, Mount Gretna, will host a Christmas scavenger hunt on Saturday, Dec. 14, from 1 to 4 p.m. Participants must find all the scattered holiday items within the time allowed to win a prize. There is a fee to participate. Preregistration is required by contacting governordick@hot mail.com or 717-964-3808 and providing a name and phone number in case the program is canceled.

curbside or rural delivery should remove snow piles, such as those left by snow plows, to keep access to their mailboxes clear for letter carriers; mailboxes should be cleared sufficiently on both sides. Curbside or rural boxes should also be kept clear of vehicles, trashcans, and other objects. Delivery service may be delayed or curtailed whenever streets or walkways present hazardous conditions for letter carriers or when snow is plowed against mailboxes. Delivery will be curtailed only after careful consideration and as a last resort. Delivery of curtailed mail will be attempted the next delivery day. Blue collection boxes also need to be kept clear for customers to deposit their mail and for the Postal Service to collect the mail for delivery. Residents and businesses with collection boxes near their property are asked to keep them clear of snow and ice.

HARTZ Physical Therapy’s 16th annual Fall Blast 5K run/walk was held on Oct. 5, and it proved to be one for the record books. Over the past 15 years, $189,000 has been donated to various Lancaster-based charities from the proceeds of the annual event. For the first time this year, all proceeds were earmarked to benefit Off the Streets (OTS) Lancaster, an organization working with local service agencies to assist families and individuals to get “off the streets” and into permanent housing. After all financial results were tallied, the staff of HARTZ Physical Therapy was able to present Off the Streets Lancaster volunteers and board members with a check for $35,000. The annual tally represents the highest net proceeds ever raised through the event - topping the previous record by $15,000. OTS is a volunteer-run, charitable organization focused on eradicating homelessness in Lancaster County. OTS works in partnership with various other community aid organizations to identify homeless individuals and families who have a

The ornaments are shaped like mittens, Santa Claus and Saint Nicholas, evergreen trees, angels, birds, and snowmen, and there is even a Noah’s ark with a pair of delicately carved giraffes. The tree is located in the chaplains’ office of the Bob Fryer & Family Inpatient Center, 4075 Old Harrisburg Pike, near Mount Joy. The facility has 24 beds, where seriously ill individuals’ pain and symptoms are managed during generally short-term stays before returning home. During December, HCC chaplains and social workers invite clients’ family members to choose ornaments from the tree as holiday keepsakes. “People are here, but the holidays are still happening around them,” Musser said. “This creates a sweet moment for them to get through this holiday season.” “(The ornaments are) a tangible expression of care that can be carried on by families,” chaplain Kevin Frain remarked. “The memories associated with an ornament may be painful, but (they are) meaningful.” This is the 11th consecutive year that the MTWA has given a decorated tree to HCC’s inpatient care facility and the third that LCWC has participated. The tradition was started by the late Bob Stampf, who was a founder of the MTWA, when the group members sought to share woodcarving with the community in an impactful way. HCC was suggested, as an

Approximately half of the LCWC’s members contributed pieces, and both styles and intricacy vary. “The details of these pieces astound me every year,” Musser said. “This is art, and they bring their gift right here to hospice.” Both carving groups have a mission to preserve the art of woodcarving. Last-Minute Gift Ideas That Leave Lasting Impressions

T

radition is a hallmark of the holiday season. Religious services, family gatherings and trips to see Santa Claus are just a few of the many traditions people adhere to during the holiday season. Many holiday shoppers also adhere to the time-honored tradition of last-minute shopping. The perfect gift can sometimes prove to be elusive, especially as the sand in the holiday hourglass keeps dwindling. These last-minute gift ideas may be just what shoppers need to put smiles on the faces of their loved ones this holiday season.

Books: Books are often overlooked, especially now that so many readers use e-readers. But books can be an ideal gift and especially convenient for last-minute shoppers, who can even gift e-books from popular websites. Recipients simply receive an email on Christmas morning informing them that their books are ready to be downloaded to their devices. Booksellers at the local bookstore are also a great resource to tap, as they read widely themselves and are familiar with other readers’ favorites as well as new releases.

Experiences: A 2017 survey by the global research firm NPD Group found that roughly 40 percent of holiday shoppers planned to give experiences as gifts. Experience gifts open up a host of possibilities for last-minute shoppers stuck on what to give those loved ones who seemingly have it all. Options abound, including day trips, theater tickets, amusement park passes and tickets to concerts and sporting events. Experience gifts are also a great way to support local businesses.

Streaming service subscriptions: Many people are cutting the cord with their cable companies in favor of streaming services such as Netflix and Hulu. Subscriptions to such services can make ideal and affordable holiday gifts. A six-month or yearlong subscription likely won’t break shoppers’ budgets and will provide months of entertainment to loved ones. Last-minute holiday shopping is easier than ever, especially for shoppers willing to think outside the box.

Food/beverage: Television channels such as The Food Network have changed the way many people look at food. When gifting the family foodie, last-minute shoppers may not need to look further than the latest hotspot restaurant or specialty grocery store for the perfect gift. Take them out for a night on the town or give a gift card they can use at their convenience. The craft beer boom has created a host of devoted and knowledgeable beer drinkers, so a gift card or growler from a local craft brewery is sure to please people who love hoisting frosty pints.

How Small Businesses Improve The Consumer Experience

W

hen shopping this holiday season, keep in mind that “shopping small” not only helps the local community but that it can also mean a more pleasant experience for you too. While small businesses may not have the marketing muscle to compete with large corporations, many small businesses have perfected the art of providing top-notch experiences for their customers by embracing several strategies that make consumers feel appreciated.

Improved customer service

Nearly every consumer has had to contact a retailer or service provider regarding a purchase at one point or another. Contacting a large corporation can be a difficult experience for consumers, who often must answer several telephone prompts before they can be connected to a human being. Small businesses typically do not ask customers to clear such hurdles before they can get in touch with an actual person. That makes the process of contacting customer service less time-consuming and aggravating and more enjoyable for customers.

■ Responses

Small businesses are in better position to respond to negative experiences or reviews, particularly online reviews, because they have fewer customers than large companies that field hundreds, if not thousands, of complaints per day. Studies have shown that customers appreciate responses from businesses they patronize. A 2018 online reviews survey from Review Trackers found that 53 percent of consumers expect a response to negative reviews within a week of posting their reviews and are disappointed when they do not receive a response. Unfortunately, the same survey found that 63 percent of reviewers have never received a response to a review. Small businesses are in a unique position to respond to online reviews, and providing such responses can turn a potentially negative consumer experience into a positive one. What’s more, because online reviews and responses are public, prospective customers can read a company’s response and know that owners want their customers to have as positive an experience as possible.

Many large companies won’t customize their products, as their financial success is typically rooted in how effectively they can scale to thousands of customers per day, if not more. As a result, large companies have less incentive to work one-on-one with customers. Small businesses are not beholden to scale, which gives them the flexibility to offer more unique products, including customized items.

How To Cut Back On Holiday Waste

This holiday season, shoppers are invited to visit The Guitar Spot, southcentral Pennsylvania's largest musical instrument shop. Over 300 stringed instruments are tastefully displayed in a beautiful historic building. It is a premier dealer for iconic brands such as Martin, Fender, PRS, Gretsch, and many more. The full-service shop offers sales, service, and lessons and The Odeum (A Performance Stage). The store is opened Mondays to Fridays from noon to 8 p.m. and Saturdays from noon to 4 p.m. It is closed on Sundays. Free parking is available in rear of the building.

T

Reducing waste come the holiday season does not mean celebrants have to forgo big family meals or beautifully wrapped gifts. In fact, there are several ways to reduce waste without spoiling the spirit of the season.

Give eco-conscious gifts. The environment may not be the first thing that comes to mind when holiday shoppers are looking for gifts for their loved ones, but giving reusable gifts can have a positive, long-term impact on the planet. Reusable coffee mugs, water bottles or straws can dramatically reduce waste over time, and such items make great stocking stuffers. Shoppers also can look for eco-friendly gift items made from recycled materials, which run the gamut from home furnishings to calendars to clothing. Shop local - and forgo shopping bags. Shipping products across the country can involve a large expenditure of gas and packaging waste. Shopping locally not only supports people in the community, it also makes it easy to use reusable bags or not use a bag at all. Several local communities also have a variety of shops in a concentrated area, so walking from store to store can also help reduce shoppers’ carbon footprint.

Reuse holiday-specific items. Many people only use gift wrap, gift boxes and gift bags during the holiday season. Such items are oftentimes discarded after Christmas morning. But these items can be reused to cut back on holiday waste. Reusing wrapping paper from year to year can be especially beneficial to the environment. That’s because wrapping paper tends to be dyed or laminated, and many wrapping papers contain non-paper additives that cannot be recycled. Reusing wrapping paper, purchasing only recyclable paper or wrapping gifts in old newspapers or magazines can help holiday celebrants reduce their carbon footprints.

he holiday season is a joyful time of year. But the weeks between Thanksgiving and New Year’s Day also tend to be very wasteful. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency estimates that household waste increases by more than 25 percent during the holiday season.

Prepare less food and donate any leftovers. The Worldwatch Institute notes that, during the holiday season, celebrants generate three times as much food waste as they do during other times of the year. Large family meals are a tradition of the holiday season, but hosts who routinely find themselves discarding leftovers can plan on preparing less food this year. Consider how much guests are likely to eat and plan meals accordingly instead of buying enough food to feed a small army. Donate leftovers to nearby shelters so nothing goes to waste.

Recycle live Christmas trees. Local residents can explore options for recycling live Christmas trees when it’s time to take down the decorations after the holidays. For example, Lancaster County Central Park holds an annual Christmas tree recycling operation. Lancaster County Department of Parks and Recreation employees grind Christmas trees into free mulch for public pickup. There is a nominal suggested donation per tree, with the funds going toward the operation of the Dr. John Moss Native Tree Nursery in Central Park. According to park officials, residents drop off about 1,500 Christmas trees each year, which produce 22 tons of mulch. The mulch is ideal for acidloving plants such as rhododendrons and azaleas and many deciduous ornamental trees and shrubs that require slightly acidic soil conditions. To learn more about the Lancaster County Park System, readers may visit www.lancastercountyparks.org. Local residents may contact their municipal office for more information about other programs in their community.

he holiday season is rife with tradition. One of the most recognizable traditions involves wrapping gifts. While the wrapping paper many gift givers use today is a relatively recent phenomenon, the tradition of wrapping gifts is centuries old, with some historians even suggesting it dates back to ancient times.

The Children’s Museum of Indianapolis notes that many ancient cultures celebrated various holidays that included exchanging gifts, adding that it’s very likely that, even in ancient times, gifts were wrapped to surprise their eventual recipients. Bojagi is a traditional Korean wrapping cloth that might have begun being used sometime during the Three Kingdoms of Korea period, which began in 57 B.C. and ended in A.D. 668. The Japanese tradition of furoshiki, which can be traced back to the 17th century and possibly as far back as A.D. 710, involves using a traditional wrapping cloth to transport certain items, including gifts.

As for the gift wrap familiar to today’s holiday celebrants, that traces its origins to the early 1900s. The Children’s Museum of Indianapolis notes that Eli Hyman and Morris Silverman founded the first gift wrap company in the United States in 1903. Unfortunately for gift givers back then, adhesive tape had not yet been invented, and wouldn’t be for another 27 years.

S

ome holiday traditions, such as holiday lighting displays, are impossible to miss, while others are more subtle and possibly even unknown to many celebrants. One tradition that falls into the latter category involves the placing of oranges into Christmas stockings. The origins of Christmas stockings are rooted in legend, and one of the more popular tales involves a widowed father of three beautiful girls. According to Smithsonian.com, this father was struggling to make ends meet and was concerned that his financial struggles would affect his daughters’ ability to find a spouse. As the legend goes, St. Nicholas was wandering through the man’s town and heard of his concerns. Recognizing that the man was unlikely to accept charity, St. Nicholas slid down the chimney of his house and placed three gold balls in the girls’ recently laundered stockings, which were hanging by the fire to dry. The value of the gold balls, which were discovered the following morning, was enough to ensure the girls could eventually wed. So what does that have to do with oranges? Those who wanted to replicate the tale could not so easily come upon gold balls to place in stockings, so they chose something similar in appearance: oranges.

The PPL Foundation recently awarded more than $575,000 in funding to support 13 nonprofit organizations working to improve the lives and well-being of individuals throughout central and eastern Pennsylvania. The grants announced are helping organizations fulfill their missions across the company’s 29-county service territory in central and eastern Pennsylvania. The 2019 PPL Foundation Major Grant recipients include several area organizations. Joshua Group in Harrisburg received a grant of $25,000 to help expand the number of children being served by an after-school program. Lancaster Equity Inc. received a grant of $40,000 for the development of a new park and playground on Beaver Street, a direct request of neighbors in the community who are working collaboratively to improve the community. Pennsylvania’s State System of Higher Education Foundation in Harrisburg received a grant of $50,000 for the development of a fund that will be used to provide faculty and staff resources to develop, test and quickly implement

ideas to help transform public higher education in Pennsylvania. Tabor Community Services in Lancaster received a grant of $50,000 to expand the capacity of its eviction prevention program to help stabilize neighborhoods by providing at-risk tenants with financial counseling, mediation with landlords and short-term financial assistance. Earlier this year, the PPL Foundation awarded $450,000 in sustaining grants to more than 70 community organizations. The PPL Foundation also contributed more than $2 million to support local United Way organizations. The recently awarded grants bring the foundation’s 2019 community contributions to more than $3 million. The PPL Foundation awards grants in spring and fall. The next grant cycle, for sustaining grants that assist organizations with general operating expenses, begins in January. Interested organizations can apply for grants from $1,000 to $25,000. To be considered for a grant, all organizations must apply online. To learn more, readers may visit www.pplcares.com.

Edward LeFevre (second from right) from the Lancaster County Chapter, PSSOR; and Nancy LeFevre, secretary of the Donegal Chapter of Pennsylvania DAR, were present on Oct. 19 at the rededication of the DAR obelisk monument. The obelisk was placed in 1899 to honor the French and Indian War and Revolutionary War patriots from western Lancaster County at the Donegal Presbyterian Church where the Witness Tree event occurred on Sept. 7, 1777. The monument has been cleaned by the Sons and Color Guard as a special project. Harvard Wood prepared the dedication plaque, and Michael Douchorty performed the cleaning. On Nov. 17, Carole Bubacz and Sharon Boyer presented their piano students in a recital at Juniper Village. A wide variety of music was selected by the students and their teachers for the program. Parents, relatives, and friends of the students, along with residents of Juniper Village, enjoyed music by composers from J.S. Bach to

Elton John. The young pianists participating were Alayna Brubaker, Stewart Carter, Taylar McFadden, Sarah Heinz, Cassie Ginder, Dominic Juarbe, Ian Rivera, Benjamin Heinz, Julia Nolt, and Lilly Stehman. Bubacz and Boyer joined some of their students in duets and duo piano pieces.
