Farmland Trust Holds Annual Dinner to preserve a farm. During this year’s successful “auction,” the organization raised enough money to preserve a 155-acre farm in West Cocalico Township. In the past year, Lancaster Farmland Trust preserved 10 farms. Five of those farm families were on hand to accept a token of appreciation for their commitment to farmland preservation. During the evening’s festivities, the Trust honored its other contributors and volunteers.
The Amos Funk Spirit of Cooperation Award was presented to the Ressler Mill Foundation for its support of farmland preservation in the Mill Creek watershed. The Benefactor of the Year Award was awarded to G. Donald and Marilyn Hess for their leadership support of the Trust’s current and future programs. The Darvin Boyd Service to Agriculture Award was presented to Frank Ludwig, longtime volunteer for the Trust and preserved

Chaplain Will Retire Chaplain James Carr will retire at the end of 2018 from Fire Department Mount Joy after 35 years of active service. Feeling a desire to serve his community, and at the urging of his neighbor, Carr joined the then Friendship Fire Company of Mount Joy as a photographer in 1983 and soon after began serving as chaplain. Through the years, Carr has spent many hours praying for each member of the department and their family, leading devotions at company meetings, and giving invocations at department functions. Additionally, Carr served through fire prevention activities and giving station tours to school groups. Carr said the highlights of his years with the fire department are the friendships he has made, the fire company’s celebration of Carr’s 50th birthday in the social hall, and, most recently, blessing the new ladder truck. Beyond the fire company, Carr has served the community through the local Jaycees, presiding as a Blue Chip Chapter president and being named Jaycee Member of the Year. Carr also

During the Mount Joy Borough Winterfest on Dec. 1, the Rotary Clock was rededicated to the community. At 6:45 p.m., the Rotary Club of Mount Joy, led by Randy Wolgemuth, dedicated the clock to the people of Mount Joy. Mayor Timothy Bradley Jr. acknowledged the importance of the clock as a centerpiece of borough life and community events. Throughout the year, the Rotarians in Mount Joy sought funding to refurbish the clock and restore the outer case. It once
again stands at the corner of Main Street and Marietta Avenue. Clockmaker Bob Durochers of Lititz did the work on the clock, updating the interior workings and ensuring the decorative paint work would stand the test of time. For more details and pictures, readers may visit the Mount Joy Rotary Club’s Facebook page. Haunted Lantern Tour To Return With “Mortality Within” in” By Chelsea Peifer
Sara Mimnall and Rebecca Wright chose the theme of “Mortality Within” for Columbia’s Haunted Lantern Tour this year because they wanted to introduce people to a not-often-talked-about aspect of the rivertown’s history. The theme will focus on the disease and poverty that struck Columbia and other communities in earlier days, discussing the presence of pesthouses and sanitariums and how much things have changed. “It shows how people suffered more than they had to because they didn’t have the
like we do now,” noted Mimnall. “It will also touch on the Great Depression and how the lack of food (and resources) can change people,” Wright added. Popular characters from past years will also reappear, Wright said, such as William Campbell, a local trapper who died from rabies and is buried in Columbia’s historic Mount Bethel Cemetery. History abounds in the cemetery and the town, and according to Mimnall and Wright, while spooky elements are intertwined on the tour, history is indeed the emphasis. The hourlong guided tours will take place on Friday and Saturday
John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, 23 S. Sixth St., Columbia. Tours will step off every half hour beginning at 6:30 p.m., with the last tour starting at 9:30 p.m. Participants will follow guides to Locust Street and through a loop in the Mount Bethel Cemetery before returning to the church. To purchase tickets, interested individuals may call 717-517-2442. A specific tour time will be designated when tickets are reserved. Organizers strongly encourage people to order tickets in advance. working 12 to 14 hours a day. At the beginning of 2015, a PET scan showed that her cancer was gone. In the summer of 2016, Kroeck noticed that her voice was becoming weary. After a checkup and another PET scan, she learned that the cancer had returned. When subsequent laser surgery was unsuccessful, she had a laryngectomy (removal of the voice box). By December 2016, she was back at work. In September this year, the cancer returned, and the plan was to remove the tumor and fol-

This resulted in a change in Kroeck’s insurance policy; complications due to this change delayed the surgery, and the surgery window passed. Holiday Tree Tips throughout the season. If it is not possible to cut one’s own tree, the National Fire Protection Association notes that fresh trees should have green needles that do not come off when touched. Trees that appear to be dried out or those that shed needles when touched should be avoided. The Tree Care Industry Association advises consumers to protect their Christmas trees as they transport them home. The tree should be wrapped in a plastic wrap so it makes it home damage-free. A damaged tree might not make it through the holiday season. Pre-cut trees should be cut again before leaving the lot. Precut trees can make it through the holiday season looking their best, but buyers should request that employees cut as much as two inches off the bottom of the tree before leaving the lot. Once trees are cut, sap begins to seal their
Pets Seek Homes For The Holidays base, making it hard for them to absorb water. By requesting that between one and two inches be removed from the bottom of the tree at the time of purchase, buyers are ensuring their trees will be able to absorb the water they will need to make it through the season when they get home. To prevent the base of the tree from drying out, the tree should be placed in water the moment it gets home. Freshly cut trees may initially need the water in their tree stands filled in the morning and then again in the evening. As the season progresses trees likely will not need their stands filled more than once per day. The tree should be placed away from heat sources. Placing trees away from heat sources, such as radiators, fireplaces, heating vents, and lights, reduces the likelihood that trees will dry out and also reduces the risk of fire.
Money-Saving Advice Posted ornaments, gift wrap, artificial trees, holiday-themed baking items and more. If an item has even a slight connection to the holidays, stores may cut the item’s price by 50 percent or more once Christmas is over. It is possible to find discounted televisions even after the Black Friday sales have come and gone. People should look at the circulars and buy items when sales are advertised, as inventory may be limited. As the winter progresses, the amount of clothing stock in stores starts to dwindle to free up room for a new season’s worth of attire. Starting in late December and continuing through late January, retailers are eager to liquidate their stock of scarves, sweaters, boots and winter coats. This is a prime time to replenish wardrobes.
Sales on linens, also known as white sales, are traditionally held in January, with home goods retailers offering discounts all month long. These sales generally encompass towels, bed sheets, curtains and other linens. January is the ideal time to purchase a new gym membership or fitness equipment since these purchases tie into New Year’s resolutions to get fit. Gyms may waive some fees or offer discounted rates. Most people return home after the holidays, and that can generate a slow travel season afterward. The travel industry attracts new customers with discounted hotel rates and other deals. Tickets to Broadway shows and other events also may be discounted to encourage people to leave the house.

Diabetic Eye Disease Facts Posted According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), more than 100 million adults in the United States are now living with diabetes or prediabetes, a condition that if not treated often leads to Type 2 diabetes within five years. One of the many damaging effects that diabetes can have is on vision. Diabetes is the leading cause of new cases of blindness in adults. November was declared by Prevent Blindness as Diabetic Eye Disease Awareness Month to educate the public on the effects of diabetes on vision, risk factors, and treatment options. Prevent Blindness offers a variety of free resources dedicated to the education of diabetic eye disease at www.preventblindness.org. Diabetes is a chronic condition that occurs when blood sugar levels are constantly high and can
cause serious health complications, including heart disease, kidney failure, nerve damage, and blindness. The National Eye Institute states that people with diabetes are 25 times more likely to become blind than those without diabetes. Additionally, African-Americans have a 40 percent higher frequency of severe visual impairment caused by diabetic retinopathy as compared with whites, as well as twice the rate of blindness. Diabetic eye disease refers to a group of eye problems that people with diabetes may face as a complication of this disease including diabetic retinopathy, diabetic macular edema (DME), cataract, and glaucoma. A leading cause of blindness in American adults, diabetic retinopathy is caused by damage to the small blood vessels of the retina - the seeing layer of the eye. Diabetic
macular edema (DME) is a complication of diabetes caused by leaking blood vessels, which leads to fluid accumulation in the macula, the center of the retina used for central vision, and can cause central vision to become blurry. Cataract is the clouding of the lens in the eye, which blocks or changes the passage of light into the eye and can cause vision to become blurry. Glaucoma is characterized by optic nerve damage and possible loss of side vision, usually caused by increase in fluid pressure inside the eye. For more information on diabetic eye disease, readers may call Prevent Blindness at 800331-2020 or visit www.prevent blindness.org/diabetes. The association provides its latest recipes and science-backed health tips as part of Eat Smart Month, which was observed in November. Taking small steps and avoiding one common mistake putting good habits on hold - is recommended. People may celebrate the season with no regrets by enjoying special occasion foods in moderation and swapping in healthier substitutions when they have control over the menu. To be at one’s peak this holiday season, American Heart Association-approved recipe hacks are offered. Additional recipes are available at www.heart.org/eatsmartmonth.
About 70 percent of the sodium Americans consume comes from processed, prepackaged, or restaurant foods. Reading labels is a simple way to net healthy results. Compare the nutrition facts on similar foods and go for the one with less sodium, including frozen varieties. Salt can be replaced with herbs and spices. Lemon juice, citrus zest, or hot chilies can add extra flavor without the added sodium. Canned fruits packed in juice or water rather than syrup are recommended. Fruit is plenty sweet without added sugars. Overly ripe fruit can be used to sweeten baked goods. Non-fat, plain Greek yogurt instead of sour cream is a healthy swap with the same texture and flavor. Instead of butter, a healthier vegetable oil can be
used, or people may substitute equal parts unsweetened applesauce when baking. Sneaking in a vegetable like pureed sweet potatoes, carrots, or cauliflower can boost nutrition. Frozen cubes of pureed vegetable can be ready in the freezer. Using half whole wheat and half white flour is also recommended. Whole grains are a great nutritional boost, and mixing the flours helps to disguise the swap. People can sip smarter by adding seasonal fruit to old-fashioned water. There are plenty of ways to jazz up a beverage without adding alcohol. Readers are encouraged to try infusing cranberries, pomegranate arils, or orange slices into sparkling water. To learn more, readers may visit www.heart.org or call 800AHA-USA1.

Innovations Challenge Set Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) and the Pennsylvania Department of Education (PDE) are reminding high school students in grades nine to 12 to submit their entries for PennDOT’s Innovations Challenge. The deadline for submission is Monday, Dec. 31. This year’s challenge asks students to look at innovative methods, aside from laws and educational campaigns, that can be developed in the next five to 10 years to get drivers to slow down in work zones. The Innovations Challenge aims to not only help students explore real transportation challenges that PennDOT is facing, but also open their minds to the possibility of working for PennDOT after graduation. Regional winners will be selected and invited to compete in Harrisburg next year for the statewide championship. The statewide winning team will be awarded $1,500 from the Pennsylvania Chapter of the American Traffic Services Association (ATSSA) to be divided among team members. For complete Innovations Challenge details, readers may visit www.penndot.gov/innovation.

upside down. If the entire head can be seen, the tires are worn and traction will suffer. If the driver lives in an area prone to heavy snow, he or she may want to consider using dedicated snow tires or carrying a set of tire chains. At a minimum, all-season tires should be rated for use in mud and snow. Once vehicles are travel-ready, drivers should be prepared for winter or vehicle emergencies, especially if long-distance travel is planned. PennDOT urges motorists to carry an emergency kit. An emergency kit should include items such as nonperishable food, water, first aid supplies, warm clothes, a blanket, a cellphone charger and a small snow shovel. However, motorists should tailor their kits to any specific needs that they or their families may have. Drivers should consider adding such items as baby supplies, extra medication, pet supplies, or even children’s games. Motorists can check conditions on more than 40,000 roadway miles, including color-coded winter conditions on 2,900 miles, by visiting www.511PA.com. 511PA, which is free and available 24 hours a day, provides traffic delay warnings, weather forecasts, traffic speed information, and access to more than 860 traffic cameras. 511PA is also available through a smartphone application for iPhone and Android devices, by calling 5-1-1, or by following regional Twitter alerts accessible on the 511PA website. For more information on PennDOT, winter preparations, and additional winter-driving resources for motorists, readers may visit www.penndot.gov.

With $228 million budgeted for this winter’s statewide operations, PennDOT deploys about 4,500 on-the-road workers, has more than 620,000 tons of salt on hand across the state, and will take salt deliveries throughout the winter. Winter maintenance is a critical and difficult task, and drivers should always think safety first and be sure that they are giving plenty of room to PennDOT operators and other motorists. When winter weather hits, PennDOT’s primary focus is on interstates and expressways, and equipment may be redirected to those routes during significant winter events. The more traffic a roadway has, the more attention it will receive from plows, so motorists may find deeper accumulations on less-traveled routes and should adjust their driving for those conditions. If motorists encounter snow or ice-covered roads, they should slow down, increase their following distance and avoid distractions. Last winter in Pennsylvania, preliminary data shows that there were 440 crashes resulting in one fatality and 221 injuries on snowy, slushy, or ice-covered roadways where aggressive-driving behaviors such as speeding or making careless lane changes were factors. In addition to planning for winter travel conditions, motorists should prepare their vehicles for the season. Tires should be checked often for the correct level of air pressure and adequate tire tread depth to perform on ice and snow. A quick way to check tread depth is to insert a penny in the tread groove with Lincoln’s head

Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) has shared the agency’s plans for winter services and highlighted tools members of the public can use through the winter and how they can prepare for the coming season. PennDOT’s top priority is safety, and that guides winter preparations and operations. To help the public prepare for the season and share information about winter services, resources are available at www.penndot.gov/winter. The site also has a complete winter guide with detailed information about winter services in each of PennDOT’s 11 engineering districts. The public can also access travel information on nearly 40,000 roadway miles year-round at www.511PA.com, and during the winter, they can find plow truck locations and details of when state-maintained roadways were last plowed. The information is made possible by PennDOT’s Automated Vehicle Location (AVL) technology, which uses units in each of the more than 2,200 department-owned and rented plow trucks to send a cellular signal showing where a truck is located. The 40,000 miles for which PennDOT is responsible translates into 96,000 snow-lane miles - enough miles to circle the globe nearly four times. A snow lane is calculated as the miles of road multiplied by the number of lanes, which means a 1-mile section of four-lane roadway would equal 4 snow-lane miles. The department maintains roughly the same number of miles maintained by the state in New York, New Jersey, and all the New England states combined.

The winners of the 2018 Code4PA codeathon have created a mobile app that provides users with personalized recommendations for opioid addiction treatment. The winners were selected from 28 projects developed by teams of participants from across the state. More than 350 technology professionals, addiction and recovery experts, college students, state officials and others took part in this year’s Code4PA, which kicked off on Sept. 20 in Harrisburg, Pittsburgh and Philadelphia. The teams returned on Oct. 20 to demonstrate their projects for judging. The app, called Care4PA, suggests services and treatment providers based on information provided by the user such as his or her location and insurance provider. Prevent Blindness, a nonprofit eye health organization, recommends Christmas gift buyers make safety a priority. To help shoppers select appropriate gifts this holiday season, Prevent Blindness has declared December as Safe Toys and Gifts Awareness Month. Prevent Blindness offers tips and suggestions with safety in mind. Safety tips include reading all warnings and instructions on the box; asking if a toy is right for a child’s ability and age; considering whether other smaller children may be in the home and may have access to the toy; avoiding purchasing toys with sharp or rigid points, spikes, rods, or dangerous edges; checking the lenses and frames of children’s sunglasses; buying toys that will withstand impact and not break into dangerous shards; avoiding toys that shoot or include parts that fly off; not giving toys with small parts to young children; not purchasing toys with long strings or cords, especially for infants and very young children; always disposing of uninflated or broken balloons immediately; and not purchasing toys with small magnets. If purchasing sports items or equipment for sports such as basketball, baseball or hockey, Prevent Blindness suggests that the proper sports eye protection also be included. Recommendations may be found at www.prevent blindness.org/recommended -sports-eye-protectors. For more information on safe toys and gifts for children, readers may visit prevent blindness.org/safe-toy-checklist or call 800-331-2020.

Making Lighting Displays Safer Lighting displays are one of the many things that help make the holiday season a special time of year. Holiday lighting displays present a perfect opportunity for communities and individuals to showcase their festive sides. Safety should always be a priority when stringing holiday lights both inside and outside a home. The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) notes that each year between 2009 and 2014, fire departments in the United States responded to an average of 210 home fires that started with Christmas trees. Lighting displays strung on home exteriors also can pose safety risks if homeowners do not exercise caution. Fortunately, various strategies can help homeowners safely decorate their homes’ interiors and exteriors this holiday season. The NFPA recommends celebrants who prefer natural Christmas trees choose ones with fresh, green needles that do not fall off when touched. Dry trees are more likely to catch fire than freshly cut trees. Adding water to the tree stand each day will keep trees fresher longer. When placing the tree, avoid placing it too close to heat sources, making sure it is at least three feet away from fireplaces, radiators, candles, heat vents, and lights. All lights, including those going on trees inside a home and those being strung outside,
Local nonprofit organizations are invited to enter a giveaway for a free website valued at $5,000. The giveaway, through Sparrow Websites of Columbia, is open through 12:59 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 22. The winner will be randomly drawn and announced during a Facebook Live broadcast on Sunday, Dec. 23, at 3 p.m. To enter the giveaway or nominate a nonprofit, readers may visit www.sparrowwebsites.com/ugly and complete the giveaway entry form. All nonprofit organizations are encouraged to enter the giveaway, regardless of geographic location, size, or specific website needs. They are also encouraged to notify their fans and supporters to nominate them. The drawing may be viewed at www.facebook.com/ SparrowWebsites. The winner will be notified via email and must claim the prize within seven days of the announcement. Any additional questions may be directed to hello@sparrowwebsites.com.
should be inspected prior to being strung. Owners should look for any worn or broken cords and replace any defected lights. When stringing lights, individuals should always work with at least one other person. This makes it safe for homeowners who must climb ladders to string lights on especially tall trees and/or on their home exteriors. People should avoid working outdoors in inclement weather. The weather during the holiday season can sometimes be unpleasant or unpredictable. People should check the forecast before stringing exterior lights to ensure Mother Nature will not pose a threat. They should avoid hanging lights if the forecast predicts wet, icy, or windy conditions that can make ladders unstable. Individuals should turn lights off when going to bed and/or leaving the house. Interior and exterior holiday lights should not be left on when no one is home or everyone inside is sleeping. If left on overnight or when no one is home, lights may contribute to fires that damage homes and may even prove fatal. Holiday lighting displays help make this time of year special. Following some simple safety procedures when decorating with lights can ensure everyone enjoys a safe and happy holiday season.

The Lancaster City Alliance and community members of all ages planted 35 trees recently in areas of Lancaster city with little to no greenery. The trees will create a new entrance to the city’s southern gateway at South Queen Street and Highland Avenue. The tree planting is one part of the South Prince & South Queen Streets Neighborhood Enhancement Project, led by Lancaster City Alliance. The overall project includes improvements to fronts of homes, Adopt-A-Block participation, placement of sidewalk trash cans, and 100 trees for the neighborhood. The project stems from requests from neighbors and is part of recommendations in the city’s Building on Strength Economic Development Strategic Plan. The recently planted trees were made possible through many groups working together to benefit the city. This includes Lancaster City Alliance, City of Lancaster, Community Action Partnership, and Lancaster Tree Tenders. Funding was provided by the High Family Foundation and the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources’ TreeVitalize Program. JOIN US FOR OUR 252nd CHRISTMAS!
The Lancaster County Corvette Club (LCCC) held its annual American Legends Fun Show for Corvettes and any other GM or GM-powered cars at Faulkner Chevrolet on Oct. 21. More than 145 cars showed up for the event despite the cold weather. Awards were presented in 15 classes - seven for Corvettes and eight for nonCorvettes - along with special awards presented by Clare House Lancaster and Faulkner Chevrolet. Best of Show trophies were awarded for Best GM Car, Best GM Truck and Best Corvette. During the afternoon, checks were presented for $23,000 to Clare House and for $22,500 to the Chip Miller Amyloidosis Foundation (CMAF). During the year, LCCC members sold giveaway drawing tickets for a new 2019 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray. The proceeds from the ticket sale minus the costs of the car were split between the Clare House and CMAF. The car was awarded to Chris and Donna Giles of Conisteo, N.Y., during the annual Corvettes at Carlisle event in late August. LCCC governor Clyde Mooney presented checks to Eva Dombrowski, Clare House executive director; Valerie Kissinger of Clare House board of directors; and Judy Miller, Chip Miller’s widow and assistant treasurer of the CMAF. The club has organized numerous car giveaway drawings in the past, but after a gap it restarted its efforts last year. In 2016 and 2017, the club distributed more than $51,000 each year to the same two charities. Along with the giveaway drawing for the car, the club also has other shows and events through the year. These activities also raise additional funds for Clare House, the club’s

It is easy to associate vigilant sun protection with summertime, when the sun is shining intensely. However, sun protection is necessary every day, regardless of the weather or time of year. Even when it is cold or overcast, UV rays that cause skin aging and skin cancer are reaching the skin. In the right winter weather conditions, people can sustain sun damage just as easily as during the summer. UVB rays, the main cause of sunburn, are the strongest in the summer. However, UVB rays can burn and damage skin yearround, especially at high altitudes and on reflective surfaces such as snow or ice. Snow reflects up to 80 percent of the sun’s UV light, so the rays hit twice, further increasing the risk of skin cancer and premature aging. UVA rays remain constant throughout the year and can penetrate through clouds and fog. UVA rays can also penetrate glass, so it is still possible to damage skin while spending a
bright winter day indoors. The first line of defense against this sun damage is clothing. Covering up is easier in the winter, because it is cold, but the face, head, and neck tend to remain exposed year-round, and this is where most skin cancers occur. People should not forget their UVblocking sunglasses and broadbrimmed hat before heading out. Sunglasses protect the eyes while also fighting snow glare, and a hat keeps the head warm while keeping UV rays from damaging the scalp. A broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 15 or higher should be applied daily to all exposed skin. People should make sure to cover often-missed spots like the tops of their ears, around the eyes, and near the hairline. Individuals should consider choosing a moisturizing sunscreen with ingredients like lanolin or glycerin to combat dry winter skin. Finally, people should try to avoid the peak sun hours between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. and seek shade when they can. For more information, readers may visit www.skincancer.org.

Rock Ford’s annual Yuletide tours provide a journey back in time to when Christmas Day was only the beginning of the season. Candlelight, festive music, dancing, and holiday greenery will set the scene for an 18th-century Yuletide at Rock Ford Plantation, 881 Rockford Road, Lancaster, during the week between Christmas and New Year’s Day. During the period when General Hand and his family lived at Rock Ford, Christmas Day marked the start of a festive season that included 12 days of parties, dinners and dances. Visitors to Rock Ford’s Yuletide tours will learn about 18th-century traditions, listen to traditional holiday music by the Harrisburgbased musical group Seasons and watch preparations in the mansion’s kitchen by members of the Warm Hearth Club. Costumed volunteers will be stationed in various rooms of the mansion offering insight into Yuletide traditions. The candlelight tours will feature period dancing by a volunteer dance group.
