On Oct. 22, Kraybill Mennonite School, 598 Kraybill Church Road, Mount Joy, held its 20th annual Race for Education. The event raised $48,861 for the school’s operating fund. “This year, we made some changes to the day to follow protocols for COVID-19,” said Holly Ford, manager of school operations. “In spite of those changes, the race was very successful.” For the fundraiser, families provide names and addresses of friends and relatives, and then they work with teachers to create a message to send to possible donors. “Each grade works in ageappropriate ways to provide students with experience in writing notes and addressing the letters,” said M.J. Smith, Kraybill principal. “Students also develop a running goal that they share in the mailer. After mailers are prepared and addressed, students take a moment to offer prayers for the school and the recipients of the mailers.” This year 2,100 mailers were sent to friends and family all over the country, with donors from 26 states returning their letters. For the event, participants ran or walked around a quarter-mile track for an hour. “This fundraiser combines practical skills of writing and reading, as well as holistically helping students to work at their physical fitness,” Ford noted. “Students sometimes work weeks in advance to prepare physically for the race.”

Smith said students enthusiastically participate, with many becoming members of the 4-, 5-, 6- or 7-mile clubs. “Teachers and parents are amazed at how far our students are able to run,” she stated. “Even our youngest students often run 4 miles!” The money raised this year represents an average of $400 raised per student, Horn said, adding, “We are so grateful for the support the school receives each year during this fundraiser. We hope to continue running for another 20 years.”

Believe and trust in Him today, y and truly find the peace, love and grace our Savior has given us through His life. From His birth we celebrate this season, through Good Friday, where He paid for our sins through His death, to Easter, where He arose and ascended to heaven to live for us for eternity.

There is no doubt 2020 has been difficult. Still, good things have come out of this year, said Walt Mueller, president of the Center for Parent/Youth Understanding, based in Elizabethtown. “Things are tough, but there is a silver lining if we look for it,” Mueller stated. “When difficult things happen, we see it as a downer, but really this is a moment of opportunity to build relationships, for families to spend time with each other, to rediscover each other and to slow down.” Mueller’s organization provides information and analysis on youth culture from a faith-based perspective, with a mission of “helping parents, youth workers, educators, pastors and others understand and reach today’s youth culture,” he said. Times may be hard, but the pandemic has brought families closer together, and there has never been a better time for parents and youths to focus on improving

communication. “People are rediscovering family meals, taking walks together, playing outside together,” he stated. “In the midst of bad things, good things have come out.” Now that families are spending more time together, more questions have come up than ever before. “We’re having families ask, ‘What do we talk about?’ or ‘Where is God in all of this?’” Mueller remarked. “To help answer some of these questions, we have put together almost 100

ECHOS Opens Winter Shelter

Bright Lights Grants Awarded

BY CATHY MOLITORIS

The PPL Foundation announced the winners of its Bright Lights grants, which honor the people who are working to transform lives in their communities. The grants’ name comes from the idea that the winners are the bright lights powering progress and making a difference. The PPL Foundation awarded a total of $100,000 in grants to help illuminate the outstanding contributions of individuals working in the nonprofit sector. Ten Bright Lights grants of $10,000 were awarded in recognition of the honorees to the nonprofit agencies they support. The recipients of these special, one-time awards include Melisa Baez and

Shelter is something most of us take for granted. For some, however, finding shelter during the winter can be difficult. Elizabethtown Community Housing and Outreach Services (ECHOS) is working to change that by opening the ECHOS Emergency Winter Shelter for the season. “We had hoped to house people in a larger shelter on our complex (Community Place on Washington), but construction was delayed due to COVID-19,” said Chrissie Raffensperger, winter shelter coordinator. “We are very grateful to instead be able to use space at St. Paul’s UMC this year.” The church, located at 398 N. Locust St., Elizabethtown, has a wing of the building that will be dedicated to the winter shelter. “This new location is conducive to families,” Raffensperger noted. “It’s a large area, and there’s room for people to socially distance.” The shelter opened on Dec. 7 and will remain open until the morning of Friday, April 2, 2021. There is no limit on how long someone can stay at the shelter, and it is open to anyone who passes the background check and is connected to the ECHOS service area in some way. ECHOS serves Elizabethtown, Bainbridge, Rheems, Marietta, Maytown and Mount Joy. “We operate on a housingfirst model,” Raffensperger explained, noting that last year

the shelter housed 61 people, including 12 children and four seniors. “We believe if you give someone a safe, stable space to stay, they will be more able to navigate out of homelessness into permanent housing.” The winter shelter is currently looking for volunteers, particularly for the overnight and morning shifts. Responsibilities of volunteers include greeting guests, monitoring guests overnight, preparing to-go lunches and cleaning the shelter for the next evening’s use. Providing winter shelter serves several purposes, Raffensperger noted, including protection from the elements. “It’s also dangerous to be on the streets,” she explained. “We want to provide a safe space for people, and we want to help people who are looking for help.” For more information about

Poiema. The Greek word pronounced “poy-A-muh” appears in the Apostle Paul’s letter to the church at Ephesus in the Christian Bible. “We are (God’s) workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works,” reads the English Standard Version (ESV) of Ephesians 2:10. Poiema, which the ESV translates as “workmanship,” can also mean “masterpiece, artwork, handiwork, or craftsmanship.” “They’re metaphors that really resound with an artist,” said Jeremy Miller, founder and CEO of Poiema Visual Arts. “That verse is pivotal because … your worth isn’t from what you’ve made but

Jeremy Miller has founded Poiema Visual Arts to inspire and encourage Christians in artistic pursuits.

what the Creator has made. But you have to do something with it.” Miller, who lives with his wife and son in Akron and is the resident teaching artist at Strasburg-Heisler Library, was influenced by his grandparents’ participation in folk art. As a youth, he was active in music performance and theater. While earning a bachelor’s degree in Bible at Lancaster Bible College (LBC), Miller wrestled with reconciling his artistic gifts with his faith. “I’m a Christian and an artist, and I don’t know how to do both,” Miller told his adviser. The outcome of that conversation involved a year of study and the construction of a theological framework for Miller’s gifts. Over the next two decades, as Miller and his family moved to Austria, Virginia, Texas, and back to Pennsylvania, he earned master’s degrees in biblical studies and Christian education, and he developed the dream of a venue where artists could build community while deepening their faith in Christ. In October 2019, Miller met with a group of visual artists to invite them to participate in creating Poiema Visual Arts. Although the pandemic has slowed down the process somewhat, the team drafted a statement of faith focusing on orthodox, Gospelcentered beliefs, and in August, it opened applications for board members. Currently, five of the 10 positions are vacant, and applications will be accepted until they are filled. The organization’s mission See Faith and Art pg 11

is to facilitate discipleship, education, and community for Christian visual artists in Pennsylvania. The initial focus is on Berks, Chester, Dauphin, Lancaster, Lebanon, and York counties. The board has set goals to make connections with churches to give leaders the tools to embrace artistry within their congregations; host biennial conferences, with the first planned for 2023; acquire an unused church building to develop as a sacred space, art gallery, maker space, coffee shop, and store for art supplies and

art- and faith-related books; and develop educational partnerships with colleges and universities. Currently, the organization is building a database of artists and supporters who would like to be apprised of progress, and it is seeking legal assistance for the application for 401(c)(3) status. “ We’re praying our way forward, Miller commented.
