For almost 60 years, Elizabethtown Child Care Center (ECCC) has been providing services to children 6 weeks of age to fifth grade. Now the organization, located within Elizabethtown Church of the Brethren at 777 S. Mount Joy St., could use your help. Applications are being accepted for board members. “A good board member is willing to volunteer their time to support an organization that has provided care to generations of children in the Elizabethtown community,” said Joe Hudzick, chairperson of the ECCC board of directors. “Board members at ECCC are dedicated to supporting the mission of providing high-quality, educational, safe and affordable early learning to families in the Elizabethtown area and supporting the staff at the center in implementing that mission.” Hudzick noted that many residents of Elizabethtown have had direct experience with ECCC or know someone who has a child who attended the center. “ Volunteering to join the board provides an opportunity to support an organization that has provided high-quality care to children in our community since 1969,” he shared. “As a

a veteran who had Gen. George Patton serve as his best man at his wedding, and the tale of the sole survivor who bailed out of his B-17 after it was shot down over Germany. “We also get to take quite a few pictures of families - kids, grandkids, nieces, nephews - with

Each offered an opportunity for the veterans to view their banners up close and celebrate with family and friends. “Prior to the banners going up

Lions members went to people’s houses to take pictures of old photos to use on banners, and others brought banners to the homes of veterans who couldn’t travel to the reveal events. At each banner reveal, no formal program was held. Veterans and their families were free to mingle, view the banners that were laid out on tables, take pictures and chat with each other. “One of the greatest things about this project and the way we’ve done it is the vets just start talking,” Brewer said. “Some of them know each other, some don’t. But we’ve heard them tell stories, and then a family member will say, ‘I never knew that.’” Fo r N e f f a n d o t h e r children of veterans, the banners have provided an opportunity to thank veterans for their sacrifices. “I think it’s great that the Lions Club has done this,” Neff said. “I love driving down the road and seeing e ve r yo ne w h o s e r ve d , because that’s what makes our country great.”

We contacted everybody on the list for that batch of banners and said, ‘We need you to approve your banner now, so we can get her banner here in time.’ Her banner showed up about a week before Christmas. We just made it. She had no idea, and her whole family met her here. It’s a great example of how everyone came together to make this happen.” This batch of banners will be installed over the next two months or so, weather permitting, and for now, the banner project is complete. Brewer said the Lions Club members were overwhelmed by the positive response to the project. “I got calls from North Carolina, Maryland, Georgia about this, saying, ‘I’m from E-town’ or ‘We lived in E-town when I was growing up,’” he recalled. “We were optimistic that we’d sell 150 banners, but it just took off.” In total, the Lions sold 350 banners. He and other Lions also made sure everyone who needed help getting a banner received assistance.

current parent and former attendee of the center, it is a privilege to be able to give back in a board member capacity and support an organization that has provided such great care to my family.” Board members have various responsibilities, he shared. They are required to attend bi-monthly meetings, participate on various committees that support the operations of the center and use their personal and professional networks to provide the best experience for the families supported by ECCC. “Board members are also encouraged to participate in events that benefit the center such as mulching the playground or volunteering at the family ice cream social event each summer, as well as assisting in fundraising and community engagement activities like the ExtraGive or classroom sponsorships,” he shared. On early release and school closure days, we have an extended program. In the summer, we offer a full-day program for grade school children with fun in the sun, including water play, scooter/ bike days and off-site field trips to museums, bowling alleys, area parks, etc.” Most of all, she emphasized, ECCC teachers strive

The City of Lancaster Office of Public Art is seeking artists to showcase their artworks in two glass-enclosed display cases at the Lancaster Amtrak Train Station. Artists are asked to create site-specific art inspired by or cohesive with the “A Place for Every Piece: Lancaster’s Living Quilt” design. The Lancaster Amtrak Station, the second-busiest Amtrak station in Pennsylvania, features the display cases as part of its annual art exhibitions. This year, the Art at Amtrak program will also highlight designs by Libby Modern and Jill Good, who are creating window designs for the station’s main terminal. Artists are encouraged to submit proposals for instal-

lations in the glass cases that either draw inspiration from or align with Modern’s and Good’s work. Proposals should include drawings, sketches, or renderings, along with a written description. While new, site-specific works are preferred, artists may adapt previous artworks to fit the aforementioned theme. This call is open to all professional artists and artist teams age 18 and older. Each selected artist or team will receive a cash honorarium to cover project expenses, including materials, fabrication, and installation. Submissions are due by Monday, Jan. 20. For more details, visit w w w.cit yoflanc aster pa.gov/office-of-public-art.

Motorists driving on Route 81 may have seen a Rotary billboard informing travelers that they are entering Rotary District 7390, which this year was designated by Rotary International as a Peacebuilder District. There are 39 Rotar y clubs in this district and 46,000 clubs around the world. The clubs of District 7390 - from Carlisle to Paradise and from Millersville to the Mason-Dixon Line - are teaming up with the internationally focused Institute for Economics and Peace (IEP) to address root causes of conflict and division. The Rotary Clubs will tap into the global resources of Rotary International and IEP to educate

members and the public on how to spread the values of positive peace. Clubs will sponsor workshops and erect peace poles in their communities. Positive peace is defined as local and global peace built on investments in economic development as well as social attitudes that foster peace. These partnerships demonstrate commitment to building environments that are conducive to sustainable peace both locally and globally. To lear n more about local Rotary-driven positive peace initiatives and workshops, contact the Rotary District 7390 office at 717-854-7842 or visit www.rotary7390.org.
