Changing The World, One Horse - And One Human - At A Time BY CATHY MOLITORIS
In a pasture off Union School Road in Mount Joy, horses and humans are healing. Lone Oak Animal-Assisted Therapeutic and Educational Services provides equine therapy to people, while also helping horses that have been abused as they work on their recovery. The
organization is the vision of Heather Girvin, a lifelong horsewoman who is also a social services professional and associate professor at Millersville University. She started Lone Oak as a pilot program in 2020, confident that matching people who were hurting with rescued horses could have vast benefits for both the humans and the equines. See Changing pg 2
Tony Gibble (left) and Abby Huber are part of the driving force behind LIV-ETown.
Creating Community In E-Town for a Grinch meet-and-greet, live music, cookie decorating stations and more. All of the events organized by LIV-ETown are free to the community. Tony said LIV-ETown has been an opportunity to learn about individuals and businesses in the community who have special talents to share. W hen planning activities for October’s Second Friday, for example, he learned of a local “pirate family,” who are members of a pirate league, and he enlisted them to help with a pirate-themed Octoberfest event. That same family came in clutch when the person GEARS had recruited to play Santa fell ill and couldn’t greet children at a December event. It turned out one of the pirates moonlighted as Santa. That organic community support is just what LIV-ETown is all about, Tony said.
Coming off a successful 5K at Millersville University in November, Katie Sandoe, executive director of Girls on the Run (GOTR) Lancaster, and Jen West, program director, are excited about the 2022 season. “We are looking ahead to spring,” said West. “We are excited to be back to a 10-week season in person.”

“Local Interactive Vitality” is the mission of LIV-ETown, a community organization focused on enhancing Elizabethtown with events and activities. LIV-ETown formed in May of 2021 as the brainchild of Tony and Clint Gibble, owners of The Tatted Toy Guys and The Candy Unicornium. “Clint and I came up with the concept of LIV-ETown initially as a way to give back to the community, but it has really evolved since then,” Tony said. Soon after the group was formed, Abby Huber came on board. Her business, Charlamay’s Trinkets and Treasures, and another local business, Frugal Finds, along with community members Amy McEvoy and Heather Watts, make up the core of the group. But Tony is quick to point out that LIV-ETown is for everyone.
“We’re spearheading events, and anyone can build off of them,” he stated. “This is meant to be something for everyone to participate in, from businesses to community members.” One of the first initiatives of the group was to focus on Second Friday in town. LIV-ETown started a monthly scavenger hunt at local businesses. Abby noted that the scavenger hunt adds an interactive component to Second Friday, one of the goals of LIV-ETown. “It’s a way to encourage the community to become part of the night,” she remarked. “People love that this is something to do with their family downtown.” LIV-ETown held a strawberry social in July, collected food for Christmas boxes and organized Merry Grinchmas E-Town in December. The latter event drew an estimated 3,000 people downtown

Changing from pg 1 Lone Oak leases space from Our Happy Place Equine Center, which includes a 20acre setting complete with a barn, an outdoor ring, an indoor arena and acres of pastures. Herd of Hope Horse Rescue is located at the Equine Center, and several of Lone Oak’s eight horses have been acquired from Herd of Hope. Since its inception, Lone Oak has grown steadily, primarily through word of mouth. It became an official nonprofit organization in May of 2021. Lone Oak has four therapists on staff - all of whom, including Girvin, volunteer their time - and provides programs including Boss Mares, for adolescent girls; One Herd, for an emotional support classroom in partnership with Donegal School District; and Lone Oak Horses & Heroes, for service members, veterans and their families. Individual therapy sessions are also offered. At a program, participants might groom the horses, lead
them around the ring or go for a ride. “Sometimes, clients come, and we just stand out in the field and pet the horses,” said Abbie Wilson, one of the therapists. Being around horses provides a natural opportunity for conversation, she noted. “Some kids don’t want to sit in a chair in a room with a therapist and talk,” she explained. “You get them around a horse, and their mouth just goes and goes.” In addition to working alongside the horses, participants also experience expressive arts therapy (EAT) at Lone Oak, which aims to enhance well-being and create a foundation for posttraumatic growth and healing. Sessions include painting, drawing or music. Girvin said one of the things she’s noticed most about the interaction between the humans and the horses has been restoration for all involved. “The clients see the horse and how the horse has gone through recovery, and that helps
them develop empathy,” she stated. As a nonprofit, Lone Oak relies on fundraisers and community donations to succeed. Boarding one horse costs hundreds of dollars, with extra costs for vet care and farrier services. All money raised goes directly to providing horse care and funding programs. On a recent afternoon, Girvin had a firsthand view of how the program is working when she saw Sammie, a horse who had suffered extreme abuse, warm up to a group of boys after weeks of being standoffish. “The boys were standing together, and she came right up and nuzzled in between them,” she recalled. “I told them, ‘She’s choosing to stand with you.’ They felt valued. No matter what their background is or what they’ve gone through, this horse wants to be near them. Horses can sense goodness.” For more information on Lone Oak, visit www.loneoak therapeutic.org.

County residents can dispose of their Christmas trees in an environmentally friendly way by dropping them at the Lancaster County Central Park mulching site between dawn and dusk through Monday, Jan. 31. The park mulching program is for Christmas trees only. No other yard waste will be accepted. Trees must be free of decorations, lights, plastic bags and hardware, including nails in the trunk. There is a three-tree limit per vehicle. Commercial haulers are strongly advised to contact their local municipalities for their respective Christmas tree recycling locations. There is a suggested nominal donation for each tree. Donations will go toward the operation of the Dr. John Moss Native Tree Nursery in Central Park. Trees from the nursery are utilized throughout the county park system. Moss, a former professor at Franklin & Marshall College and a founding member of the

Lancaster Environmental Action Federation (LEAF), worked to promote the conservation of natural resources for the improvement of the environment of Lancaster County’s public parks and open spaces. In 2000, LEAF donated funds to the Lancaster County Department of Parks and Recreation for the creation of a nursery in memory of Moss. According to park officials, residents drop off approximately 1,000 Christmas trees each year, which produce 15 tons of mulch. The mulch is ideal for acid-loving plants such as rhododendrons and azaleas and for many decidu-
ous ornamental trees and shrubs that require slightly acidic soil conditions. The mulch will be available to residents on a first-come, firstserved basis after Thursday, Jan. 6, near the tree drop-off site. Persons desiring free mulch should bring a pitchfork or shovel and a bag or a trailer to transport it home. For more information about the Christmas tree mulching program, residents may call the park office at 717-299-8215 on Mondays through Fridays from 8:30 a.m. until 5 p.m. To learn more about the Lancaster County park system, visit www.lancastercountyparks.org.

My name is Zach Nauss and I am looking for A NEEDLE IN A HAYSTACK opportunity. I’m a local business owner in search of a retiring farm or land owner who is looking to downsize and would be willing to help me take over their property. As real estate prices have inflated it has become harder to obtain my dream of a farm due to 20% down requirements. Unfortunately, programs the USDA offers won’t assist funding for equine operations since they don’t provide meat or crops. Western horse activities are growing in popularity but quality facilities are fading fast due to lack of assistance. Hard work ethic combined with business sense and exceptional horse care knowledge isn’t found easily, and that’s what my family and I have to offer. We currently rent a farm in Hershey where we provide boarding with no option to buy. I also rent a shop in Middletown for my business and then I have my residence in Elizabethtown that I own. We are ideally looking for 20-100 acres in or around Etown. We are open to any options or agreement structuring. If this is something you would consider please don’t hesitate to give 717-696-5141. me a call to see if this can work for both of us. 717-696-5141 Thank you, Zach.

Students in Elizabethtown Area School District (EASD) recently held annual food drives so they could provide food boxes to local residents in need. As a result of Bainbridge Elementary School’s weeklong effort to collect nonperishable food items, 10 families in need in the Bainbridge community were provided with a food basket containing many of the items needed for a traditional Thanksgiving meal. Additionally, students brought in household items such as paper towels, napkins, and plastic ware to go along with the food baskets. At Mill Road Elementary School, with a schoolwide focus on giving and gratitude, students brought in over 120 nonperishable food items like canned gravy, canned corn and vegetables, instant potatoes, stuffing, instant macaroni and cheese, and canned soups. Through the students’ efforts, three families from the Elizabethtown community received a Thanksgiving food box. The school planned to give any leftover food items to the local Community Cupboard. In the weeks leading up to Thanksgiving, Elizabethtown Area Middle School’s students, faculty, and staff took part in the school’s annual Feathers for Families program. This year’s fundraising initiative raised more than $3,695, which was used to purchase traditional Thanksgiving food items. As a result, 16 families from the greater Elizabethtown area received Thanksgiving food baskets containing all the ingredients for a Thanksgiving dinner, including a gift certificate for a turkey, a vegetable, bread, potatoes, yams, stuffing, and gravy. The baskets also included other items the families could use for the entire day like coffee, cereal, and

“I meet a lot of people who come into my stores, but these events are helping us create conversations and build relationships,” he explained. “LIV-ETown is all about pooling talents. One person can’t do it all, and in this case, we want as many people involved as are interested so that we can benefit from what each person brings to the table.” Abby noted that above all, LIV-ETown is focused on everything that makes Elizabethtown great. “We want to bring the community
together,” she said. “You see these Hallmark movies where the whole town gets involved in events, and that’s what E-Town can be.” Tony stated that he’s already seen positive impact from the group in just the few months since its creation. “So many people have come up to me and said, ‘I’m falling in love with my town again,’” he remarked. “That’s a wonderful thing to hear.” For more information on LIV-ETown or to get involved in future events, visit the group’s Facebook page.

Girls on the Run Lancaster, which includes a 5K as part of its curriculum, will hold in-person sessions for its spring semester.
Indeed, the program hopes to have teams in every Lancaster County school district for the spring semester, and coaches will be needed to help make that happen. “We are really looking for the support of the community and for coaches to get involved (because) the need will be greater than ever to serve more girls this spring,” said West. Teams have also formed at community sites, such as parks and churches. Coaching requires a commitment of up to three hours a week, and Sandoe noted that GOTR coaches need not be teachers. “The majority of sites are schools, but you don’t have to be a teacher to coach,” she said. “We would love that our coaches reflect the community that we serve,” she said, adding that coaches need not even live within the district where they coach. West added that mothers, fathers, and community members can be coaches. “You don’t have to be a runner,” she said. “We welcome anybody and everybody to coach girls.” Volunteer GOTR coaches receive benefits, including guaranteeing a daughter a spot on a team and receiving a discount for her registration. Free CPR and first aid training are offered, and all coaches are trained to lead teams. “It’s a chance to be a positive role model and inspiration to the girls - a leader and someone to talk to,” said West.
According to Sandoe, coaches have told her that they witness positive changes in team members. “They say, ‘I have seen how it transforms how the girls think about themselves and each other and their attitudes,’” she reported, adding that teachers have told her they believe in the impact of the program because they see GOTR lessons lived out in their classrooms. GOTR is a youth development program that encourages confidence, character, care, connection, competence, and contributing to community. One international study found that 85% of girls in the program showed gains in those areas, along with increased long-term physical activity and critical life skills. Registration for the 2022 spring season will open Tuesday, Feb. 1, and the season will begin on Monday, March 7. The GOTR 5K presented by OAL will be held on Saturday, May 21, at Franklin & Marshall College in Lancaster. The fall 5K at Millersville attracted 1,000 runners, including 400 girls, running buddies, and immediate family members. “If you’re interested in learning more about coaching … we encourage (you) to reach out,” said Sandoe. Those who are interested in coaching may contact Jennifer West at jwest@gotrlancaster.org. More information about the program and the 5K may be found at www.gotrlancaster.org.

Dramatic Situations” for the first three years. Later, “Portals” continued the concept using the artist’s original paintings and/or their titles as inspiration for the performances. Performers for the Jan. 7 collaboration include Dominique Jordan Miller, Sophie Xiong, Ever Sandoval, Taska Ska Winyan, Solise White, Evita Colon, Disrupt Theater, Teatro Paloma, and others. The stage performance will also be livestreamed for those interested in viewing from home. Details can be found at www.artsmu.com. The live exhibit “Memories in the Crossroads” has been postponed. Created in partnership with the City of Lancaster, the exhibit was originally scheduled to be presented in the Binns Room for one night and to spotlight six families and cultural
experiences with artifacts exhibited in a “Memory Room.” In place of meeting in person, there will be a free, three-part Zoom presentation from 3 to 5 p.m. on Jan. 7. In the first part, family members from the various cultures will share their personal memorabilia related to themes such as community, service, fellowship, worship, and celebration. In part two, members of the Pennsylvania State Archive will share best practices in protecting and preserving family memorabilia. The third part will be an open questionand-answer session, with all participants and viewers invited to ask questions about various local cultures and the maintaining and safeguarding of family treasures. Details for this presentation can be found on the aforementioned website.
