An Evening Of Hope BY CATHY MOLITORIS

To raise funds for its mission of providing a safe environment for community youths, Cornerstone Youth Center will hold its annual banquet and silent auction on Friday, March 18. The event, titled “An Evening of Hope,” will take place at the Elizabethtown Brethren in Christ Church, 996 E. High St., beginning at 6 p.m.

Providing A Second Chance BY CATHY MOLITORIS

ith 30 years in the profession and as chief of the Elizabethtown Police Department, Ed Cunningham has seen countless encounters between the police and people who are addicted to drugs. Most of these encounters ended the same way: with an arrest so the person could detox in jail, or with a dose of naloxone to rescue someone who was overdosing. He knew there had to be a better solution, and he found it by creating the SecondChancePA program. “This grew out of an attempt to find a new way to deal with the overdose epidemic and particularly the opioid epidemic,” he stated. “Everything we’ve always tried was not working. … Arrest or the medics were our only tools. If the person didn’t want to go with the medics, or if there wasn’t a reason to arrest them, we could do our best to talk them into treatment, but if they didn’t want to go, there was nothing we could do.” Through his job, Cunningham met the people who run Blueprints for Addiction Recovery, a Mount

person who responds and can help you right now, where you are.” SecondChancePA also includes a training component for police officers. “The No. 1 priority for our officers is saving lives, but priority 1A is smashing the stigma that exists between police and the people who need our help the most,” Cunningham explained. Since its inception, the SecondChance program has spread to every police department in Lancaster County, and now Cunningham is looking to expand the program beyond the county. He said the program is working, noting that the majority of people served by SecondChance enter treatment. Last summer, the program expanded to include a mental health component as well. SecondChancePA has also worked to turn police stations into safe spaces, Cunningham said, adding, “A person can walk in and say, ‘I need help,’ and we’ll get them the help they need.” To learn more about the SecondChancePA program, visit www. secondchancepa.com. For immediate help, call 717-618-9628, ask a police officer for help or walk into a participating station and ask for help.

Joy-based organization. They started working together to create SecondChancePA. SecondChancePA launched in January of 2019. The program features a team of interdisciplinary addiction treatment professionals, law enforcement and government officials, advocates and citizens determined to help turn the tables on addiction, relapse and needless death. “ What makes SecondChance unique ... is that this program uses certified recovery specialists as a point of contact between police and service providers,” Cunningham said. “These are people who have specialized training on how to help someone who is suffering from addiction. They are also people who are in recovery themselves.” Service is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. “A certified recovery specialist will come to the field, even if it’s 3 a.m., and will take responsibility for the person to get them into whatever treatment or care is appropriate,” Cunningham said. “Most other programs, the police will give the person a business card and it’s up to the person to call in the morning for help. “We are really excited to be doing a live event this year,” said Laurie Shepler, director of Cornerstone, who noted that the last two years featured prepackaged meals for pickup only, paired with an online presentation. “There’s something about actually meeting and greeting the people who support us that is so important. And it’s a great opportunity for people to hear more about our ministry and how it’s supporting our community.” An Evening of Hope will feature a sit-down meal catered by Harvey’s Main Street BBQ. Dinner will include stuffed chicken breast, mashed potatoes and gravy and green beans, as well as pies from Pies Galore. Cornerstone Youth Center staff and members of the board will speak about the organization’s mission and future. The evening’s keynote speaker will be David Nasser.

Camp GOTR will introduce girls to confidence-building exercises and potential career choices.

Camp GOTR will be held from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day from Monday, June 13, through Friday, June 17, at Thaddeus Stevens College of Technology Greiner Advanced Manufacturing Center, 599 Chesapeake St., Lancaster. Mornings will feature opportunities to delve into the GOTR curriculum designed to boost confidence and appreciation as campers write, create, discuss, and connect. In the afternoon, girls will participate in excursions focused on careers for women, including public safety, health and medicine, machine technology, and entertainment. Girls will meet mounted police, learn about robotic surgery and orthopedics, make a keychain in a machine shop, and visit a multiplex cinema. GOTR has partnered with Thaddeus Stevens, UPMC, and Penn Cinema to make these field trips possible. “It’s a wonderful opportunity for girls to experience GOTR curriculum while also exposing them to (future) careers they might not have considered,” said Katie Sandoe, GOTR executive director. “They can see themselves in those roles and (think about) what they could potentially become.” Girls do not need to be past GOTR program participants to attend camp. All state, CDC, and program host COVID-19 guidelines in place at the time of camp will be followed. Registration is on a first-come, first-served basis, and space is limited. There is a program fee, and financial assistance is available. For details and registration, visit www.gotrlancaster.org. GOTR is a youth development program that encourages confidence, character, care, connection, competence, and contributing to community. One study found that 85% of girls in the program showed gains in those areas, along with increased long-term physical activity and critical life skills. Registration for the 2022

Lady Bears Cap 9-12 Overall Record

BY ERIC PYLES

The 2021-2022 season will go down as a difficult one for the Lady Bears’ basketball team. A win over Exeter Township was offset by losses to Lampeter-Strasburg and Ephrata, leaving E-town with a 9-12 overall record. The setback to Ephrata took place on February 8th with the Lady Mountaineers using a 10-2 run over the final quarter to secure the 34-28 win. Ephrata controlled the second half, buoyed by that fourth quarter spurt, but Elizabethtown held serve in the opening half. That resulted in a 19-14 Lady Bear lead at the break that Ephrata mostly erased with a 10-7 edge in the third. Taryn Hummer (nine points) and Ainsley Raybold (eight points) were top scorers for Elizabethtown. The loss to Lampeter-Strasburg occurred on the 3rd with E-town going scoreless over the final 3:42 of the game leading to a 39-33 L-S victory. Even without that scoreless stretch the Lady Bears were facing an uphill climb thanks to the Lady Pioneers 167 edge in the opening frame. That nine-point margin held until the third quarter where Elizabethtown trimmed it to five with a 10-6 edge only to see L-S regain control in the final frame. Jade Love-Morris netted 13-points and Raybold 12 in the loss. The victory over Exeter Township was by a 52-40 final with E-town

controlling the first and last quarters. In between the Lady Eagles managed a slim 25-21 advantage but the Lady Bears enjoyed a 14-4 run to open the contest and a 17-11 to close things out, leading to the 12-point victory. Kallee Locker posted a game high 17 in the win while Love-Morris chipped in with 14-points. WRESTLING The wrestling team made a short trip across the river to Wrightsville on February 5th to take part in the Eastern York Duals. The Bears went a perfect 3-0 to take the title and with seven wrestlers also posting a perfect 3-0 mark were never really challenged. E-town’s toughest test was their 51-22 final over Lancaster Catholic with York Tech (59-9) and Eastern York (66-6) barely causing the Bears to break a sweat. Of the seven perfect grapplers on the day, just two, Jake Rudy and Ryan Findlay, managed to secure all three wins via fall. Nick Smith and Aiden Robinson missed out on three straight falls but still provided the max six team points with both collecting two forfeits to go with one fall. The remaining members of the perfect club, Hayden Best, Nathan Thomas, and Dakota Petrosky, ended up with a collection of falls, decisions and a few forfeits sprinkled in for good measure. Five other Bears just missed a perfect day, going 2-1 instead. Sam Yoder, Austin Reitmeyer, Ian Brosey,

third quarters to counter’s Ephrata 15-4 second quarter surge, making it a 32-31 contest heading into the final quarter. E-town was able to hold a narrow, 10-8 edge in the fourth, stretching that one-point lead to the final three-point mark. BOWLING The bowling team closed out a perfect regular season with three more wins giving the Bears a sparkling 98-14 overall mark with a L-L best 79-12 league record. Ephrata was the first of those three, 5-2, victories back on February 2nd, where Zach Wentzel and his 719 series led the way. Daniel Eberle rolled games of 237, 246 and 217 to settle right at 700. Alaina Telenko was consistent with games of 221, 222 and 234 while Ayden Pope finished with games of 226, 188 and 225. Derek Deardorff was the fifth bowler for games one (256) and two (184), before giving way to Connor Alleman for a final game 202. Eight total bowlers combined for the 5-2 win over CV on the 8th. However, only three of the eight, Pope (724), Wentzel (687) and Eberle (664) completed all three games while Telenko (411) took care of two games. That left single games for Deardorff (214), Eric Barnes (169), Hannah Griffie (165) and Alleman (160). Elizabethtown closed out the regular season one day later by topping Section One heavyweight Penn Manor with the same 5-2 final. The Bears used a traditional five kegler line-up with Pope and his 763 series leading the way. Eberle added a 706 with Deardorff (659) and Wentzel (626) also passing the 600-pin See Sports pg 5

AJ Bush, and Bradly Candy comprised that group with Ryan Hottenstein and Collin Huggins rounding out the E-town contingent with a combined 1-2 mark. BOYS’ BASKETBALL While a good portion of the high school basketball teams have a make-up game or two remaining, the Bears finished out their regular season with a two-game winning streak. That puts E-town at 13-9 overall and squarely in the District 3-5A bracket and on pace to host a first-round game on February 21st. After falling to Lebanon on the 1st, Elizabethtown righted their ship by outlasting York Suburban 57-55 on the 3rd. Outlasting because Etown built a 31-22 lead through the first half only to see Suburban slowly chip away at the nine-point halftime cushion. The Trojans trimmed just one point away in the third, leaving their 23-17 run through the fourth to scare Elizabethtown to the final whistle. Four players handled the bulk of the scoring, led by Matthew Gilhool and his 19-points. Patrick Gilhool added 12-points and Techeal Gonquoi 10-points as the only other double-digit scores. Branden Cummings completed the group of four with a nine-point effort. The Bears closed out the regular season on the 8th, slipping by Ephrata 42-39 with only five players cracking the box score. Gonquoi and Matthew Gilhool led the way with 11-points each while Cummings added 10 points. Patrick Gilhool (seven-points) and Dax Kelly (three points) finished up the offense for Elizabethtown. Sports from pg 4 count. Telenko capped the win with a 563 series. The Bears were not able to secure the double perfect match some had hoped for but wins over Wilson and Conestoga Valley secured one half of that perfection. With a 495-488 win over Wilson on the 3rd and a 496-488 victory over CV on the 8th, Elizabethtown finished the 2021-2022 regular with a perfect 14-0 mark, locking up the

regular season title for the second time in four years. Against Wilson, Rachel Broomell posted the lone perfect score but Branden Rain, Kyle Lloyd and Caden Kettering were right there with matching 99s. Luke Turner closed out the win with a 98. A few days later it was Rain posting the lone perfect score with Turner and Bonsall being joined by Lloyd and Nizaly Ortiz Kreiner with near-miss, 99s.

Nasser was born in Iran but came to the United States as a child. A teacher, writer and consultant, he speaks to more than 700,000 people annually about the Gospel of Christ. “He’s a really dynamic speaker,” Shepler noted. “He is coming from a place of growing up in the Muslim faith, then losing everything to follow Jesus. He’ll present a message of true life transformation.” The evening will also feature a silent auction of items provided by local businesses, including gift cards and gift baskets. Proceeds from the auction and donations will go toward the youth center’s goal of raising $100,000 between Jan. 15 and Wednesday, March 30. “People may see that goal and think that’s a really, really big goal,” said Michelle Bush, chair of the board of directors for Cornerstone. “It’s about having faith, having hope and reaching kids who need to hear a message of hope particularly in the world we live in today.” Currently, Cornerstone serves about 220 children in grades five through 12. “Some kids just come for something to do, but some come because it’s a safe place, sometimes safer than

home,” Shepler noted. “They find a sense of belonging at Cornerstone that they need.” She added that funds raised through the event will help increase programming at the center, potentially add staff members and allow the organization to continue making a difference. “For the Christian community to see real change happen in Elizabethtown, it requires a measure of faith and hope,” Bush noted. “It requires transformation, just like we’ll see with our keynote speaker. What Cornerstone is doing will change the community for future generations.” Doors will reopen at 7 p.m. for additional guests who have not reserved tickets for the meal but would like to hear the speakers in the sanctuary. The banquet is free to attend, but reservations are requested. To register, visit www.cornerstone etown.org/benefit-banquet or call Shepler at 717-367-0000, ext. 1.

keeping a close eye on COVID restrictions as the festival approaches to determine if the event can be held at the church or will be moved to a larger venue to allow for more social distancing. In the meantime, he encourages anyone who feels called to participate to contact him and join rehearsals. “You do not need to have a church affiliation to participate,” he said. “This is for everyone. I’m inviting anyone who wants to have the opportunity to sing sacred music for the glory of God.” For more information and to sign up to participate, email Berdos at ccmusic .tom@gmail.com.

R080832

He invites anyone with an interest in singing to join the festival. “There are lots of churches these days that do not offer a choir,” he stated. “I’m a big believer in following the Lord’s commandment to sing together. I’m hoping people who love to sing but don’t have the opportunity to sing in a church choir will jump in. I am looking for anyone who wants to sing sacred music.” The concert will be free to attend, but a freewill offering will be received to benefit local emergency responders. In previous festivals, Berdos said, some of the responders participated in the concert and people whose lives were saved had a chance to speak at the festival. “My goal for this is to make this festival a community event,” he stated. “We want to give back to the people who are giving so much to us. It’s about supporting the people in our community who support us.” He noted that he’ll be

If you love to sing, you’re invited to participate in the first Chiques Choir Festival, to be held on Sunday, May 1, at 4 p.m. The event’s location is still being finalized, but rehearsals for the choir will be held on Wednesdays from 7 to 8 p.m., in the sanctuary of Chiques United Methodist Church (UMC), 1215 E. Main St., Mount Joy. Rehearsals will begin on Feb. 23. The event is being organized by Tom Berdos, director of music for Chiques UMC, who has coordinated a community concert featuring Handel’s “Messiah” for many years. Although this will be the first time the choir festival will be held locally, Berdos has conducted the festival at other locations out of state. While the “Messiah” concert featured a difficult piece of music, the choir festival is more accessible to everyone, Berdos noted. “The music is generally lighter and more varied than ‘Messiah,’ and it’s easier to learn and sing,” he stated. “While ‘Messiah’ is very classical, heavy-duty stuff that takes a lot of work to master, this is not that. This will feature a wide variety of music.” The pieces will still be sacred music, he noted, but will include choral anthems ranging in style from classical to modern, including hymns, spirituals and other choral arrangements. “When I did this concert before, we had people up dancing in the aisles,” Berdos commented.
