A House Full Of Interesting People Nar-Anon Provides Support BY CATHY MOLITORIS
esse Waters’ mind works in unusual ways, and that’s a good thing for the community. Thanks to his out-of-the-box thinking, the Bowers Writers House at Elizabethtown College has hosted a slew of interesting visitors. There’s been Justin Sight, a blind magician who specializes in sleight of hand. Waters has brought in Richard Blanco, Barack Obama’s poet laureate. He enticed Peter Mehlman, the head writer of “Seinfeld,” to visit. All of these guests have been perfect choices to come to campus, because although Waters is the director of the Bowers Writers

J
House, the building’s name is a bit misleading. “Our mission is to be an interdisciplinary venue for presentations, performances, expression and study,” Waters explained. Since becoming the director 12 years ago, he’s organized almost 400 events featuring scientists, artists, historians and more - all of which have been open to the community. “The only requirement for me when I invite people here is that they are people who have a personal and professional passion,” Waters said. He also seeks out guests who are open to meeting with students and members of the community. Typically, guests offer a craft talk and question-and-answer session,

“When you have a loved one who is addicted, you feel like nobody gets it,” said Linda Cary. “You feel so helpless, and you think nobody else can understand. Your life revolves around it.” The good news, Cary noted, is that you are not alone. Cary knows firsthand what it’s like to love someone who is addicted to drugs,
and she also knows what it’s like to find the support she needed for herself through Nar-Anon, a program focused on helping friends and family members of addicts. Cary is starting a local Nar-Anon meeting on Mondays at 7 p.m. at the Lutheran Church Parish Life Center at Christ Evangelical Lutheran Church, 125 E. High St., Elizabethtown. Cary grew up in this area but spent 50 years living in Texas. W hile there, she watched her daughter struggle with drugs from the age of 14. Her daughter eventually passed away six years ago from lung cancer, and Cary is certain the drugs contributed to the problem. Two of her grandchildren also have addictions. Still, Cary is not hopeless. She found support and help in Nar-Anon. When she moved to Elizabethtown to be closer to family, Cary wanted to join a local meeting. “I started looking for a Nar-Anon meeting here, and I couldn’t find one,” she recalled.

Jesse Waters in the Bowers Writers House’s great room
often followed by dinner in the house and then a larger event either in the home’s great room or in a venue on campus. Although the Bowers Writers House is located on the Elizabethtown College campus and Waters also teaches courses at the college, its programs are open to anyone. “This is a ‘writers house,’ but it’s an experiential house for everyone in the community,” Waters stated. “It’s their house.” Several community groups use the house for meetings and events, and Waters wants to collaborate with more local organizations. “If an organization like Kiwanis or the Lions has someone they’d like to bring in, they can let me know, and I’ll work to bring them here,” he said. The house features space for small group seminars, a full kitchen, offices for students and faculty and a suite for out-of-town guests. It can also be rented out for conferences or other special events. Waters came to Elizabethtown College as a visiting professor in 2008 and planned to stay for one year. He was asked by the departing college president if he’d be interested in starting a writers house, and despite no experience with one, he jumped at the chance. An award-winning poet and author, Waters visited other writers houses on college campuses to get ideas for how he wanted to run the Bowers Writers House. The house is named for Elizabethtown alumni Kenneth and Rosalie Erb Bowers. When Waters is not working, he loves to hang out with his dog and cook; before going to college, he worked his way up the ranks in the restaurant industry, eventually becoming an executive chef. However, he’s most passionate about the opportunities the Bowers Writers House offers, and he hopes the public will take advantage of the building’s programming, noting, “Everything we do is for the community.” For more information on the Bowers Writers House and a list of upcoming events, visit www.etown.edu /centers/writershouse.

Nar-Anon is more important than ever as the opioid epidemic grows. “People think of drug addicts as being a certain type of person, a lowlife,” she said, “but I hear so many stories about people who suffered a sports injury and were given opioids and, through no fault of their own, they became addicts.” She encourages anyone to check out a meeting. “They don’t have to be alone in this struggle,” she said. “We can learn from each other’s experiences. We can gain strength and hope from each other.” The entrance for the NarAnon meeting is on the side of the building, and the meeting is located upstairs. Attendees can just show up any week or can call Cary at 713-882-6188 for more information.

So, she started her own. The group began meeting in late February, and it’s open to anyone, Cary said. Like AlAnon for loved ones of alcoholics, Nar-Anon follows a 12-step program. “You learn to accept the fact that you have no power to change your loved one,” Cary said. The meetings focus on the “three C’s” of Nar-Anon: You didn’t cause it. You can’t control it. You can’t cure it. What you can do is take control of your life back. When you love someone who is addicted, it can become all-consuming, Cary said. “You learn to let go with love,” she said. “You do not have control over what they are going to do with their lives. It’s devastating, but you have to learn to let go.” She noted that the need for

Spanish IV and V students from Elizabethtown Area School District were honored in the Spanish Literature Contest.
The Latin American Alliance has announced its annual Spanish Literature Contest, which will have the theme “The Family.” The contest, which accepts poetry and short stories, is open to all students of the Lancaster-Lebanon IU 13 area studying the Spanish language, including students in middle school, high school, a college or university, or a trade school. With the desire to encourage and stimulate the learning, use, and mastery of the Spanish language, the Latin American Alliance organizes the contest each spring. The theme of “The Family” reflects an important dynamic within
the Hispanic culture. The submitted works will be judged on their originality, creativity, and literary quality, along with correct usage of grammar, verb tenses, extent of vocabulary, and creativity of expression and presentation. After review by the judges, who are Hispanic business and community leaders, teachers, and musicians, the winners will be determined in each of the four divisions, based on the students’ Spanish level. Recognition and monetary prizes for first, second, and third places will be awarded in special ceremonies. Additionally, winners will be invited to share their

For more information and complete contest rules, along with the submission form, can be found visit www.latinamera .org/literature-contest. Questions can be emailed to laca.lanco@gmail.com. The deadline for submissions is midnight on Thursday, March 31. This contest is one of the many programs of the Latin American Alliance to promote, maintain, celebrate, and share the Spanish language and the Latin American culture in Lancaster County. The task force uses the victim-centered approach, focusing on the restorative process of each victim, said task force coordinator Brad Ortenzi, who will be one of the panelists. “(We want) to further help the audience understand the work that is being done to combat the vicious crime of trafficking in Pennsylvania, not just in Lancaster and surrounding counties,” she stated. “(We want) to also highlight what the community can do to keep their families safe and how the community should report to the task force when they see anything suspicious or come across a potential victim.” For more information on Welcome to the Battle or to purchase tickets, visit https://northstarinitiative.org /welcome-to-the-battle

Other agencies that will be represented at Welcome to the Battle include FREE (Freedom and Restoration for Everyone Enslaved), ZOE International, Greenlight Operation, She’s Somebody’s Daughter and TFC Global. Corrado said inviting panelists from outside Lancaster County, including Castellino and Williams, is a deliberate move on NSI’s part to underscore the pervasiveness of human trafficking.

Welcome to the Battle will bring together community agencies to discuss survivor impact, from rescue to restoration. Attendees will learn about the latest tactics traffickers are using to recruit local women into the sex trade, how to identify trafficking activity and what to do if they suspect a family member or friend might be a target of traffickers. This is the fifth year for the fundraising event, said Alicia Corrado, executive director of NSI. “Lancaster County just launched a local Human Trafficking Task Force,” she explained. “This year, proceeds raised will go to (the task force) to aid their efforts as they rescue survivors of trafficking in our area.” NSI is a member of the task force, and the agency works to offer rescued victims of trafficking access to trauma-informed, comprehensive care, Corrado stated. NSI owns and operates The Harbor, a restoration home and program for domestic sex-trafficking victims. “Our goal is for every survivor to leave The Harbor fully restored, so she can return to the community and enjoy a

A baby has brittle bone disease. Two people have been diagnosed with brain tumors. Another man, who is just 39 years old, has ALS. These are some of the people who will benefit from the support of Lancaster County Field of Hope this year. The Columbia-based organization helps people in Lancaster County who are facing health hardships, and you can be a part of this mission by attending Hope@22, a fundraiser for the organization. Hope@22 will be held on Saturday, April 2, from 7 to 9:30 p.m. at Garth gallery, 22 S. Second St., Columbia. The event - named for the address of the gallery - will feature a silent auction, giveaways, beer from Pour Man’s Brewing, wine and lite fare. Josh Wolpert will provide live entertainment. It’s been two years since Field of Hope has been able to hold its auction, said Carol Heth, who founded the organization in 2016. Garth donates the space for the evening, and a wide variety of items will be up for grabs. Prizes include a staycation at the Heths’ Columbia 6-acre property, which is an Airbnb. A cooking night for 10 at the Heths’ house is also featured. Prizes also

Carol Heth, with some of the auction items
include a live edge pecan coffee table, a suite for 24 people to see a Barnstormers game, artwork, a basket of kitchen items and a cookbook signed by chef Chris Santos, wine donated by Deerfoot Winery and a planter from Perfect Pots. “This year, we are offering online bidding as well as inperson,” Heth stated. “We’ll be posting items online, so people from out of state or anyone who can’t come to the event can bid.” Heth remarked that Garth provides a unique space for the event. “It’s an art gallery, so there are all kinds of neat things to look at while you’re
there,” she said. She also noted that the 2022 recipients of Field of Hope’s support are invited to attend Hope@22 as the organization’s guests and will be introduced at the event. Applicants are evaluated individually when determining who will receive financial support each year, she said. Since its inception, Field of Hope has helped 26 recipients, giving away just shy of $235,000. In the past, the auction has raised $6,000, and Heth said she’s hoping this year will match or surpass that amount. Tickets are not required to
attend Hope@22, but a door donation is requested. Heth noted that the event will take place on the second floor of the gallery, so stairs are used to access the space. “Come out and enjoy an evening of giving to others and supporting those who are going through a rough time,” she commented. “Come out and meet some new people. It’s a relaxing evening, although the bidding does get a little competitive. It’s just a fun night out.” For more information on Hope@22 or to access online bidding for the auction, visit www.lancofieldofhope.com.

Extension Posts Stream Repair Program Penn State Extension and the Penn State Agriculture and Environment Center’s Greening the Lower Susquehanna Program will offer an opportunity to learn how to repair a stream through hands-on practice. This activity will take place on Saturday, April 2, from 9 to 11:30 a.m. at Little Chiques Creek, 305 Longenecker Road, Mount Joy. Participants will live stake and plant trees along a stretch of Little Chiques Creek that is in need of stream bank stabilization. Live staking is a low-cost and easy way to add fast-growing plants to a stream bank and create more stable soils. The program is for anyone who is interested in learning
how to repair a stream on his or her own property, wants to help to protect and restore local waterways, and would like to get outside and volunteer. Participants should bring gloves, a water bottle, hand pruners, a shovel, a mallet, and waterproof boots or waders. Volunteers will have plenty of space to social distance. Since the group will also be planting some trees along the side of the stream, a few opportunities to help from dry land will also be possible. There is no charge to participate, but preregistration is required at https://tinyurl .com/streamrepair by Friday, April 1.

Last State Silver Bank Rolls up for grabs Fortune of old Silver Coins issued by the U.S. Gov’t sealed away in the only State Restricted Bank Rolls known to exist are actually being handed over to Pennsylvania residents STATE RESTRICTION: Only residents of PA get the $19 state minimum - non state residents must pay $57 per coin PENNSYLVANIA - “We’re bracing for the flood of calls,” said Laura Lynne, U.S. Coin and Currency Director for the National Mint and Treasury. That’s because the next 2 days the last remaining State of Pennsylvania Restricted Silver Bank Rolls loaded with rarely seen U.S. Gov’t issued Silver Kennedy Presidential Half Dollars are actually being handed over to Pennsylvania residents who call the National Toll-Free Hotlines listed in today’s newspaper publication. And here’s the best part. If you are a resident of the state of Pennsylvania you cover only the $19 per coin state minimum set by the National Mint and Treasury, that’s twenty rarely seen Silver clad Kennedy Presidential Half Dollars worth up to 60 times their face value for just $380 which is a real steal because non state residents must pay $57 per coin which totals $1,140 if any coins remain after the 2-day deadline. “National Mint and Treasury recently spoke with its Chief Professional Numismatist who said ‘Very few people have ever actually saw one of these rarely seen Silver Kennedy Presidential Half Dollars minted over 50 years ago. But to actually find them sealed away in State Restricted Silver Bank Rolls is like finding buried treasure. So anyone lucky enough to get their hands on these Bank Rolls had better hold on to them,’” Lynne said. “Now that the State of Pennsylvania Restricted Silver Bank Rolls are being offered up we won’t be surprised if thousands of Pennsylvania residents claim the maximum limit allowed of 6 Kennedy
Presidential Silver Bank Rolls per resident before they’re all gone,” said Lynne. “That’s because the dates and mint marks of the U.S. Gov’t issued Silver clad Kennedy Presidential Half Dollars sealed away inside the State of Pennsylvania Restricted Silver Bank Rolls have never been searched. But, we do know that these coins date back to the mid 1900’s and some may be worth up to 60 times their face value, so there is no telling what Pennsylvania residents will find until they sort through all the coins,” Lynne went on to say. “Rarely seen silver coins like these are highly sought after, but we’ve never seen anything like this before. According to The Official Red Book, a Guide Book of United States Coins many Silver Kennedy Presidential Half Dollars have nearly doubled in collector value in just the last several years,” Lynne said. “We’re guessing thousands of Pennsylvania residents will be taking the maximum limit of 6 Bank Rolls because you can only get them rolled this way directly from the National Mint and Treasury and they are the only State Restricted Bank Rolls known to exist,” Lynne continued. “We know the phones will be ringing off the hook. So make sure to tell everyone to keep calling if all lines are busy. We’ll do our best to answer them all,” Lynne said. The only thing readers of today’s newspaper publication need to do is make sure they are a resident of the state of Pennsylvania and call the National TollFree Hotlines before the 2-day deadline ends midnight tomorrow. Q IMPORTANT FACTS: The dates and mint marks of the rarely seen Silver Kennedy Presidential Half Dollars sealed away inside the State of Pennsylvania Restricted Silver Bank Rolls have never been searched. alw Coin values always fluctuthe ar ate and there are never any guarantees, bu but any rare, s arce or highly sc hig g scarce collectible coins, rregardless of u that state their valu value residen n may find residents e the sealed inside Ban n Rolls are Bank th h theirs to keep.
Q FLYING OUT THE DOOR: Calls are pouring in from state residents who are trying to get their hands on the last State Restricted Silver Bank Rolls known to exist sealed away in the secured packages pictured above before the deadline ends. That’s because residents who beat the 2-day deadline printed in today’s publication by calling 1-800-233-5658 Ext. JFR1846 are cashing in on the lowest ever state minimum price set by the National Mint and Treasury.
Answering Your Questions Q: How to claim the last State Restricted Silver Bank Rolls A: If you are a Pennsylvania resident read the important information below about claiming the State Restricted Silver Bank Rolls, then call the State Toll-Free Hotline at: 1-800-233-5658 EXT: JFR1846 beginning at precisely 8:30 A.M. this morning. Q: Are these Silver Kennedy Half Dollars worth more than other Half Dollars? A: Yes. These rarely seen Silver Kennedy Presidential Half Dollars were minted in the mid 1900’s. That makes these silver coins extremely collectible. The vast majority of half dollars minted after 1970 have no silver content at all. In fact, these Kennedy Presidential Half Dollars were the last silver coins minted for circulation. That’s why many of them now command collector values of many times their face value so there’s no telling how much they could be worth in collector value someday.
Q: How much are the State Restricted Silver Bank Rolls worth? A: It’s impossible to say, but these Kennedy Presidential Half Dollars date back to the mid 1900’s and some are worth up to 60 times the face value and there are 20 in each Bank Roll so you better hurry if you want to get your hands on them. Collector values always fluctuate and there are never any guarantees. But we do know they are the only Pennsylvania State Silver Bank Rolls known to exist and Kennedy Presidential Half Dollars are highly collectible so anyone lucky enough to get their hands on these State Restricted Silver Bank Rolls should hold onto them because there’s no telling how much they could be worth in collector value someday.
Q: Why are so many Pennsylvania residents calling to get them? A: Because they are the only State Restricted Silver Bank Rolls known to exist and everyone wants their share. These are not ordinary bank rolls. These are full Bank Rolls containing 20 Silver Kennedy Presidential Half Dollars dating clear back to the mid 1900’s some worth up to 60 times their face value. Remember this. Only Pennsylvania residents are guaranteed to get them for just the $19 per coin state minimum set by the National Mint and Treasury for the next two days. Non state residents must pay $57 per coin.
Q: How do I get the State Restricted Silver Bank Rolls? A: The only thing Pennsylvania residents need to do is call the State Toll Free Hotline at 1-800-233-5658 Ext. JFR1846 before the deadline ends. Everyone who does is getting the only State Restricted Silver Bank Rolls known to exist. That’s a full Bank Roll of 20 Silver Kennedy Presidential Half Dollars for just the $19 per coin state minimum set by the National Mint and Treasury, which totals just $380 for the full Bank Roll. That’s a real steal because non state residents are not permitted to call before 5 pm tomorrow and must pay $1,140 for each Pennsylvania State Restricted Silver Bank Roll if any remain.
