Spin Your Wheels For A Great Cause BY CATHY MOLITORIS

On Sunday, July 17, a bike ride can help bring orphaned children home. Brittany’s Hope will host its first Biking for Brittany event, a metric century and metric halfcentury bike ride, beginning at the Star Barn Village, 1 Hollinger Lane, Elizabethtown.

The course - ranging from 31 to 62 miles - will take riders throughout Elizabethtown, Hershey and surrounding areas, said Dana Myers, director of charitable giving for Brittany’s Hope. Proceeds from the ride will benefit at-risk and orphaned children served through the nonprofit organization. See Wheels pg 2

Fighting Cancer Through Mini-THON BY CATHY MOLITORIS

hen Elizabethtown Area High School students hosted their 13th annual Mini-THON in April, they overcame a series of challenges to pull off a successful event. The original March date was changed to April 22. The original location inside the school was moved to the football stadium. The event was scaled back from its typical 12-hour dance marathon format to a seven-hour event. And the participation of students dwindled a bit, said Ashley

Geesey, executive chair of the event. “We didn’t get as big a turnout of participation as we might have hoped, but the small group of people who were there had so much spirit, so much fire, and everything turned out really great,” said Ashley, a senior. “I was so glad to be a part of it this year.” In total, the students raised more than $60,000 for Four Diamonds to support pediatric cancer research and help families of children with cancer take care of medical costs. Thanks to events like Mini-THON, Four Diamonds-sponsored families never see a cancer-related medical bill during treatment through Penn State Health Children’s Hospital in Hershey. The theme for Mini-THON was Grooving for a Cure, and participants were encouraged to dress in disco attire. The event included community hours, where the public was invited for games, activities, dancing and food trucks. At 8 p.m., the Lights of Hope luminaria ceremony was held, featuring candlelit paper lanterns. “The ceremony honored the families in our community that have been affected by cancer, and not just kids, but anyone who has passed away from cancer, is currently battling cancer or has conquered cancer,” said Emma Keener, a sophomore who was the event co-chair along with senior Madison Conway. Emma understands firsthand what

it’s like for families affected by cancer. Her younger sister is a cancer survivor, and Emma has participated in the THON event held annually at Penn State University. “Cancer is an awful journey, but you make so many connections through it, and that’s one of the good things to come out of it,” Emma said of the time she spent with others at THON, adding that her own family is a Four Diamonds family. Adviser Ken Boland noted that Mini-THON was an opportunity to raise awareness of how cancer affects the Elizabethtown community. “The likelihood is great that you’ll know somebody who will be impacted by pediatric cancer and need the services of Four Diamonds,” he said. “My niece was diagnosed with cancer in 2019 and I know without Four Diamonds, she wouldn’t have the positive results she had. I’m proud of these incredible students who wanted to serve this cause through Mini-THON.” Ashley, who is headed to Penn State this fall, plans to participate in THON there and said her family has also been touched by cancer. “I’m so ready for a cure for cancer,” she stated, noting that she lost an uncle to the disease. “Knowing we’re comforting these families going through this horrible hard time, that’s why I THON. I’m so proud of the success of our event.”

Biking for Brittany will help at-risk and orphaned children.

Downsizing The Details BY CATHY MOLITORIS

Many people find success by thinking bigger. For Jim Flowers, it’s all about thinking smaller. Flowers, who lives in Marietta, has been creating scale replicas of the façades of local buildings for the past few years. He typically works in a scale of one inch to one foot and completes the façades in painstaking detail, including bricks, shingles, stones and shutters. Beginning in 1995, Jim operated Flowers in the Kitchen, an Elizabethtown-based restaurant, See Details pg 5

families seeking to adopt special-needs children. “Biking for Brittany will help children who are most in need of support,” Myers said. “Brittany’s Hope is unique in that 100% of everything we raise goes directly to help children.” Myers emphasized that along with participating in Biking for Brittany as an inperson rider on the day of event, people can support the mission by engaging in a virtual ride on their own time or by supporting a rider with donations. “This ride is giving people the opportunity to enjoy beautiful scenery - we really took that into account when the route was planned - and get active while supporting a great cause,” Myers stated. “It’s going to be a fun day.” Registration will be available until the day of the event, but a discount on registration will be available until Wednesday, June 1. For more information on the event, visit www.bikingforbrittany.org.

Myers explained that the idea for the bike ride came from brainstorming ways to reach a new audience of supporters. The organization already holds fundraising events, including Brittany’s Ball, an annual gala, and the Walk of Love 5K. A volunteer involved with the gala suggested the bike ride. “This area is a very active biking community,” Myers said. “People are very invested in cycling here, and we wanted to tap into that as a way to try something new.” Biking for Brittany will feature a rolling start beginning between 7 and 9 a.m. and will include rest stops along the way for riders. “We have different groups from the community managing each rest stop, and we’ll have a chance for our riders to refuel, because this is a long time to be out on their bike,” Myers noted. Founded in 2000, Brittany’s Hope is an organization devoted to providing aid to abandoned children, including adoption grants for

says ‘no,’ I’ll probably do it anyway,” he stated with a laugh. “I pick something I like, I measure it and I take pictures.” He also creates custom blueprints, making a layout of the building’s windows, doors and other special features. His replicas typically begin with a frame of one-by-threeinch plywood. He then constructs the façade in detail, with special attention paid to paint colors and materials. Although he strives for accuracy, he will make one exception: “I put candles in each window,” he explained. “Even if you don’t have candles in the window of your house, I’m putting them in there. They look nice.” Jim can spend up to 80 hours working on a façade. He’s quick to point out that although that’s technically two weeks of work, at 40 hours a week, he’s not putting in long days. At 83, he’s taking his time to complete

with his wife, Pollyann, and his daughter, Laura. While there, he created his first façade when he replicated the restaurant. The business eventually closed, and Jim didn’t think about doing another façade until his wife passed away three years ago. “I had nothing to do, and I needed something to do,” Jim said simply, describing how he got into the work. Jim has always had a creative side. He and his wife sold handmade items at craft shows throughout the region, featuring Pollyann’s counted cross stitch and Jim’s wooden folk art. His façade work is all self-taught, he said. To start a project, Jim finds a building that strikes his fancy. “Most of the time, I’ll get permission to make one, but if someone

likely the snake was someone’s pet. “We would appreciate any help … locating his family, who are probably worried sick about him,” he said. While Zeebee waits to go home, he’s in good company at Forgotten Friend, where two other California kingsnakes have a permanent home. Rothacker emphasized that it’s common for people to see snakes throughout the region as the weather warms up, but that there’s likely no cause to worry. “We have so few venomous snakes in Pennsylvania,” he said. “If you see a snake, you are welcome to take a picture of it and we will ID it for free. We’ll remove your anxiety about it.” He also noted that he’s made a few videos of Zeebee, which can be viewed on the sanctuary’s YouTube channel, www.youtube.com/Forgotten FriendReptileTV. If you have information about Zeebee, contact Forgotten Friend at info@forgottenfriend.org or leave a message on the organization’s Facebook page.

far from its home, but he can’t be totally sure. “It most likely wouldn’t have moved more than a few hundred yards from its original location,” he said, but since there isn’t much development around where the snake was found, Rothacker suspects it could have hitched a ride on the undercarriage of a car and ended up far from home. Rothacker noted that when he rescues reptiles, he typically won’t post pictures of the animal but will publicize some basic information, hoping the rightful owner will reach out. In Zeebee’s case, pictures had already made the rounds on social media by the time the snake was rescued, so Rothacker will use the snake’s markings to help identify it when it’s claimed. Rescuing a snake is just part of a typical day’s work for Rothacker. He’s rescued snapping turtles stuck in concrete basins and snakes trapped in window wells. Many times, the animals can just be released once they are freed, but in Zeebee’s case, it was

Beating Holiday Travel Crowds than planned, planning ahead to avoid surprises or problems, and considering a local destination. The easiest way to find oneself stuck in Memorial Day traffic is to hit the road during peak travel times. Many people have embraced the trend of leaving early for holiday weekend travel, so the roads may be busier than drivers would expect on Thursday afternoon and evening. If it is possible,

drivers can hit the road prior to 3 p.m. on the Thursday before the holiday. If work and kids’ school schedules make that impossible, departure should be delayed until late Thursday night or before the sun rises on Friday morning. Late at night or very early in the morning might not make for the most accommodating travel time, but roads tend to be the least congested at these times. Travelers should expect the trip to take longer than planned. Delays are possible, even if traveling during offpeak hours. Recognition of that can make traffic jams or flight delays a little easier to manage. Parents can prepare kids for delays by letting them know in advance that some setbacks are possible. Expected delays should be built into the itinerary, so people are not stressing out about missing anything. If travelers experience no delays, then the weekend begins that much sooner. It is important to do one’s part to avoid surprises or problems that can be anticipated. When traveling by air, travelers should confirm

everything they need to get through security and onto the plane as quickly as possible. Travelers should make sure passports and other forms of identification are current. Bags should be packed wisely so there are no surprises at check-in time. The more details tended to in advance of departure, the less stressful the travel day will be. Travelers should also consider a local destination. Another way to beat crowds is to avoid joining them. The National Ocean and Atmospheric Administration estimates that roughly 40% of the American population lives in coastal communities. That means more than 120 million Americans can drive to coastal areas without having to traverse potentially congested highways and interstates. Stay local for busy travel weekends like Memorial Day and reserve longer trips for other times of the year when fewer people are on the road. Memorial Day travel is historically heavy. Savvy vacationers can employ various strategies to avoid the crowds this year.

Girls’ Lacrosse Team Wraps Up The 2022 Season

E-town’s Danielle Bruno shoots and scores one of her match-high three goals in the Bears’ 9-8, L-L League loss to Ephrata, May 5 in E-town. BY ERIC PYLES

For most high school sports teams, momentum can be fickle. A perfect example would be the girl’s lacrosse team, after snapping their 28-game losing streak on April 14th, the Lady Bears enjoyed a small 3-0-1 run only to fade over the final four games to fall to 3-14-1 overall and 2-8-1. E-town closed their L-L slate on May 5th with a narrow 9-8 loss to Ephrata where 12 Sydney Pope saves were not enough to hold off the Lady Mountaineers. Dani Bruno paced the attack with three scores while Aiesha Rios added two. Moira Shott,

comes late in the season against a potential playoff foe, an uneasy feeling lingers. Such is life for the E-town softball team after a 5-1 loss to Solanco on May 10th. The Golden Mares not only sit above Elizabethtown in the LL pecking order, they are also a few spots higher in the District 3-5A power rankings, making the loss much more difficult to stand. Dylan Shepherd posted a 16 assist, one block game while Damian Tobias recorded 10 kills. Billy O’Connell added five aces to the offense. Tristan Lane and Seth Rajnic matched Shepherd’s one block while Evan Ott chipped in with seven digs. The Bears were back in action on the 9th with wins of 25-12, 25-23 and 27-25 for another sweep, this one over Cocalico. BOYS’ LACROSSE The end of the regular season was no better for the boy’s team with the Bears dropping their season finale to Hempfield by a 15-1 final. for that rally, each driving in two runs. Garber also enjoyed a two-RBI game, belting solo homeruns in the first and fifth innings. Kaden Kimble picked up the win despite allowing the first five Solanco runs during his six innings of work. Ben Heckman secured the win by finishing the final inning allowing one run on one hit with no walks and no strikeouts. Playing a third game in three days did not faze Elizabethtown as the Bears topped Garden Spot 4-0 in their season finale on the 11th. Pike Burkett picked up the win, tossing six shutout innings with Kaleb Daley striking out the side in the seventh to close the game out. The pair allowed just four hits and combined for nine strikeouts. Luis Perez-Alfaro put E-town on the board with a two-run single in the third while Baker added another two-run single in the fifth. It was not all good times for the Bears as a 7-6 loss to Lebanon on the 5th would attest. The Cedars used a three-run seventh inning rally to wipe away Elizabethtown’s two-run top half that had made it 6-4 in favor of the visitors. Garber accounted for those two seventh inning runs with a home run while Perez-Alfaro used a sac fly and a bases loaded walk to collect his two-RBIs. Kimble got the start but ended with a no-decision after leaving in the sixth. Burkett tossed the seventh and took the loss.

Best Practices For ID Protection To help online banking users protect against spoofing, Northwest Bank has compiled a list of best practices for protection and remediation. Spoofing is the act of disguising a communication, such as a call or text, from an unknown source as being from a known, trusted source like a financial institution. If individuals did not initiate contact with their bank and are contacted by someone claiming to be from their bank, they should ignore the text or email or disconnect the call. Then, they should call their bank immediately using a phone number from a known source, like online banking or a bank statement. People should never send personal information over instant messaging, text, or email. Requests for personal information over the phone are almost always a scam.

Banks will never contact individuals and ask them to provide a code sent by text message or email to access their account. Text verification codes should only be initiated by the customer and entered by them through channels like online banking. Individuals should routinely check online banking to be sure there have not been any unauthorized logins. If someone identifies unauthorized logins, they should update their user ID and password immediately and review their transaction activity, reporting anything suspicious to their financial institution. The same user ID and password should not be used to access different websites. An email address should not be used as one’s online banking user ID, and individuals should routinely change their online banking user ID and password.

Additionally, for those who become a victim of identity theft, Northwest recommends several steps. Victims should call their financial institution immediately. An identity theft complaint should be filed with the Federal Trade Commission at www.consumer.ftc.gov or 877-438-4338. Victims should also contact the three major credit bureaus to place a fraud alert on their credit report. To place a fraud alert, call Equifax at 800-5256285, Experian at 888-3973742, and TransUnion at 800680-7289. It is also important for people to file a police report to protect themselves if an ID thief starts using their information to commit crimes. starting with the 4x800. Jillian Wivell, Kendall Hein, Liah Drager and Olivia Shenk enjoyed that victory while Felicia Morris, Addy Haak, Lily Heistand and Genna McDonald claimed the 400m relay. McDonald (200m) and Wivell (3200m) added solo wins to their day with Ali Fink (800m) Jordan DiRisio (1600m) rounding out the track wins. Elizabethtown’s final two wins came in the field with Charlotte Hershey taking the shot put and Ally Rank the pole vault. BASEBALL In a case of too little too late the baseball team posted wins over Penn Manor, Solanco and Garden Spot on backto-back-to-back days with the result being an 8-11 mark but no playoff berth to show for their effort. The Bears topped Penn Manor 6-0 on May 9th with Alex Baker enjoying the win. The senior scattered six hits with three strikeouts and one walk while holding the Comets scoreless over his seven innings. Mitchell Garber made the most of his one hit, driving in two with his sixth inning double. Baker, Jonathan Hinkle, Cade Capello and Cole Chrzanowski completed the offense with one RBI apiece. One day later the Bears slipped by Solanco, 10-6, thanks to a four-run rally in the top of the seventh. Chrzanowski and Braden Cummings were responsible

choice in the seventh that pushed Sophia Finch across to make it a 5-1 final. The going was much better on the 4th as E-town rolled Lebanon, 15-0, in three innings. Bryan allowed no hits and no walks, adding four strikeouts for good measure. Ortiz-Kreiner enjoyed a threehit, three-RBI game but it was Finch leading the way at the plate. The junior first baseman finished with four RBI on two hits. TRACK The final regular season tune-up for the track and field team did not go as planned with the Lady Bears falling to Garden Spot 89-61 while the boy’s dropped a heartbreaking 75-74 final. The boys did their heavy lifting on the track with only Carlton Wise’s pole vault win coming in the field. Half of that heavy lifting came from relay wins with Elizabethtown taking all three. Jaycen Conrad, Patrick Boyer, Max Gerhart and Nicolas Mascia opened the meet with a 3200m relay win while Juan Lopez, Owen Dommel, Taidou N’Dikwe and Zach Verghese closed the meet with a 1600m relay win. In between it was Dommel, Lopez, Verghese and Ryan Ruth taking the 400m relay. Two of the final three wins went to N’Dikwe (400m) and Verghese (200m). Conrad finished things off with a 3200m win. MERCHANDISER - Elizabethtown Edition - May 18, 2022 - 11

The Lancaster County Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) has begun a 30day public review and comment period for the Draft Lancaster County FY2023-2026 Transit and Highway Transportation Improvement Program (TIP). The TIP outlines the county’s federally funded transportation improvement priorities and is required for the county to receive and spend federal transportation dollars. The public will have the opportunity to provide comments on the TIP and related documents until Monday, June 13. The TIP is a listing of highway, bridge, transit, and miscellaneous transportation projects that are expected to move

through the project development process over the next four years. The accompanying Air Quality Conformity Analysis (AQCA) document demonstrates project conformity to federal air quality standards. The draft TIP, the AQCA report, and related documents are available for review at www.lancompo.org/2023-tip. These documents are also available for review at the Lancaster County Planning Department at the Lancaster County Government Center, 150 N. Queen St., Lancaster. Three public meetings will be held on the TIP and related documents. On Monday, May 23, at 2:30 p.m., the Lancaster County Planning Commission will receive comments at its

regularly scheduled meeting at the Lancaster County Government Center or online via Lifesize. On Wednesday, June 1, a virtual public meeting will be held at 7 p.m. on Lifesize. On June 13, the Transportation Technical Advisory Committee will receive comments at its regularly scheduled meeting at 12:30 p.m. at the Lancaster County Government Center or via Lifesize. To access any of the three meetings via Lifesize, visit https://call.lifesizecloud.com /1696302 or hear an audioonly version via phone by calling at 312-584-2401, ext. 1696302#. In addition, the MPO will accept comments via email to Wclark@co.lancaster.pa.us,

phone at 717-299-8333, or www.lancompo.org/2023-tip. To obtain the address to submit comments via mail, call the aforementioned phone number. Public comments on the documents must be submitted by June 13. The Lancaster County MPO is committed to compliance with the nondiscrimination requirements of applicable civil rights statutes, executive orders, regulations, and policies. Anyone who requires an auxiliary aid or service for effective communication should contact Will Clark at 717-299-8333 or Wclark@co.lancaster.pa.us as soon as possible, but no later than five days before the scheduled meeting.
