Video Will Celebrate Memorial Day BY CATHY MOLITORIS
Ta Ta Rebels founder Kim Ramirez (far right) provides support for breast cancer survivors with the help of volunteers including (from left) Trish Catalfano, Tyler Kline, Cathy Way and Bob Murphy.
Providing Hope For Breast Cancer Survivors few years ago, Bainbridge resident Kim Ramirez was speaking to a group of people for a breast cancer awareness event. “I asked the room, ‘How many of you have supported breast cancer research?’ and every hand went up,” she recalled. “Then, I asked, ‘How many of you have supported breast cancer patients?’ Again, every hand went up. Then, I asked the room, ‘How many of you have supported breast cancer survivors?’ and the hands went down.” Ramirez is determined to change that response. She founded Ta Ta Rebels Inc. after her own battle with breast cancer, and the organization celebrates its fifth anniversary this year.

started thinking, ‘I’m not alone in this battle.’” The nonprofit focuses solely on survivors, Ramirez said. “For organizations like the PA Breast Cancer Coalition, you have to be in treatment to receive services,” she explained. “The reality is survivorship is just as expensive as going through treatment.” The organization assists with copays, deductibles and medical equipment such as prostheses, mastectomy bras and compression sleeves. “We will consider coverage to help with any medically related bill for breast cancer survivors,” Ramirez noted. Since the organization began, it has raised more than $20,000 and has helped more than four dozen women across the state.
Sara Gutshall is devoted to veterans, and it shows. For the past year, the Maytown resident has been coordinating a fundraiser to replace the crumbling walkways in Maytown square with engraved bricks bearing the names of community members and businesses. The bricks will be dedicated at a ceremony on Monday, May 31, beginning at 1 p.m.

Ramirez is an eight-year survivor of breast cancer. Four years after her diagnosis, she ended up in the emergency room, thinking she was having a heart attack. “My right arm was swollen, and something just wasn’t right,” she recalled. It took more than a year of testing before she received her diagnosis: lymphedema, a common side effect for people who have had lymph nodes removed during breast cancer treatment. “I learned that most insurances do not cover costs related to lymphedema,” Ramirez remarked, adding that treatment includes massage therapy and wearing an expensive compression sleeve up to 12 hours a day. “My friends and family did a fundraiser to help me offset some of the costs, and I

The pandemic may have forced the Maytown Memorial Day committee to cancel its annual parade, but it didn’t stop the group from getting creative. “We were having a committee meeting, and one of our members said, ‘Why don’t we do something virtual?’” recalled Linda Good, committee member. So, the group got to work rounding up old photos of parades of the past as well as pictures of the town square through the years to showcase in a video that will be released on Memorial Day, Monday, May 31, on YouTube and will also be available for purchase. Lifelong Maytown resident Jack Frank narrates the video, which runs about 20 minutes. He said choosing not to hold the parade and ceremony this year was a difficult decision, but a necessary one.
“We always start the parade with the Bainbridge Band, but they are not performing together this year,” he explained. “The high school band also could not participate. We just thought it wouldn’t be much of a parade without the bands, and by the time we got the OK to maybe organize something, we had run out of time. It takes a long time to plan this parade.”

For the past 11 years, volunteers have organized the Glen Lapp Memorial Volleyball Tournament indoors in January at Lancaster Mennonite School. This year, due to COVID-19, the event is moving outside. The tournament will be held on Saturday, June 12, at 9 a.m. on Lancaster Mennonite School’s soccer fields on Millstream Road, off Lincoln Highway East (Route 30). The rain date is Sunday, June 13. Past years’ tournaments were limited to 40 teams, and organizers had to turn away teams. This year, there is no maximum number of teams. The tournament is named after Glen Lapp, a 1987 graduate of Lancaster Mennonite School. He played volleyball at Eastern Mennonite University and coached at Lancaster Mennonite in the ‘90s. In 2010, Lapp and nine others were killed while providing free medical assistance in a remote area of Afghanistan. The volleyball tournament honors Lapp’s life and passion for volleyball. All proceeds benefit the Glen D. Lapp Endowment for Student Aid. Over the last 10 years, over $60,000 has been raised to provide scholarships for immigrant and refugee students. The tournament will have two divisions, one of which will be more competitive. Games will be

“We’re going to have a very nice dedication,” said Gutshall, who is president of the American Legion Auxiliary Unit 809. “I’m going to have laying of wreaths to honor our veterans. This year is the 100th anniversary of the American Legion Auxiliary. I think this is the most appropriate time to have a dedication.” Holly Shaffner, a 24-year veteran of the Coast Guard who is originally from Maytown, will be flying in from California to serve as master of ceremonies, Gutshall said. Sandy Heisey will play a medley of armed forces theme songs on the keyboard, and members of the Marietta American Legion Riders Post 466 will serve as a special guard for the square. The Rhythm Singers from Donegal High School will sing the national anthem. “We will have an antique, craft and collectibles show going from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. on the same day on the outer parts of the square,” Gutshall noted. Gutshall, who has lived in Maytown her whole life, said the square is an important part of the community. “When I was a little girl, we had to go down to the square to pump our water,” she recalled, noting that over
time, weather, use and tree roots destroyed most of the walkways around the square. “I was worried about people walking in there,” Gutshall said. “I really prayed about this.” After a driver hit the square and caused a lot of damage, Gutshall decided to take action. “God spared the military monuments in the square honoring our veterans, so it seemed like a vision to me that something had to be done,” she added. Gutshall has taken orders for more than 350 engraved bricks over the past year or so. “It takes 1,873 bricks to cover the whole square, but I’m really happy with how many engraved bricks we’ve sold,” she remarked. “Each engraved brick tells a story, a history of our town.” Bricks for the project were provided by Drohan Brick & Supply, and landscaping was donated by Tom Jones Landscape and Lawn Care. In addition to installing more engraved bricks, Gutshall hopes to erect iron archways on the square in the future. Bricks are still available for engraving. To order a brick, call Gutshall at 717-426-2107.

Retro Road Trip: PA’s Drive-In Movie Theaters WENDY ROYAL
There are few things in this world that trigger a case of nostalgia for baby boomers like drive-in movie theaters. But, it isn’t only boomers who appreciate these icons of entertainment; Gen Xers and millennials are packing the kids in the car or setting out for the perfect date night. Seriously, if you want to score some points with your significant other, a surprise trip to one of Pennsylvania’s drive-ins would be a great departure from the same old date-night routine. Pennsylvania was an early adopter of the outdoor movie theater craze. In April 1934, Shankweiler’s Drive-In in Orefield, Lehigh County, became the second drive-in movie theater to open in the U.S. Today, it is the oldest operating drive-in in the country. The Keystone State ranks second behind New York in the number still in operation. The evolution of technology, like the switch from window speakers to radio sound and the move from traditional to digital screens, has improved the quality of picture and sound. But the essence of the drive-in experience hasn’t changed in more than 70 years - waiting for the sun to go down, the smell of freshly popped popcorn and making memories with family and friends. My own memories include taking in a movie with a carload of friends when I was a teenager and then going back to the Columbia Drive-In (no longer in operation) as a young mom with my husband and our children watching from the open hatchback of our car. The memorial is located in a circular grass area approximately 57 feet in diameter. It includes a 46-foot walking path, seven flag poles, two benches, and a large granite memorial stone. Displayed on the flag poles are the American flag; the flags of the Army, Marine Corps, Navy, Air Force, Coast Guard and Merchant Marines; and the POW/MIA flag. To complete the project, Matthew has raised over $20,000 in
monetary donations and donations of equipment and materials. He is still accepting donations toward the memorial to help with future maintenance and upkeep costs. Matthew is homeschooled and lives with his father, Josh; mother, Ashleigh; and three siblings in Elizabethtown. Matthew has been involved in Boy Scouts since he was 8 years old. Frank and Good are two Maytown citizens for whom Memorial Day is especially important. Frank’s father served in the Navy during World War II and participated in the D-Day invasion, and Good’s father also served in the Navy. Good said the video is a perfect way to honor veterans and their importance to Maytown. “I think people will really enjoy seeing this video and reliving some of the history of Memorial Day in Maytown,” she noted, “and I think they might see themselves or people they know in the pictures.” The Maytown Memorial Day video will be available on Monday, May 31, through a YouTube link. Copies will also be for sale, with proceeds benefiting the Maytown Historical Society. More details, including the link, will be available on the Maytown Memorial Day Facebook page closer to Memorial Day or can be found by searching for “Maytown Community” on Facebook or “Maytown Memorial Day Celebration 2021” on YouTube. The video features Frank talking about the history of the Maytown parade and the importance of the Maytown square. Several residents are featured in the video as well, along with a prayer and benediction and the playing of the national anthem. Frank is especially proud of one part of the video that he hopes will become an annual tradition when the ceremony and parade return in person. “We will play taps and we will read the names of all of the people from East Donegal Township who were killed in combat since the Civil War,” he said. “This is the first time these names are being read. We’ll show pictures of them, and we’ll talk about what happened to them.” Typically, the Maytown Memorial Day ceremony features a speaker who is a member of the military, but this year, the committee wanted to take a different approach. “With this video and with Jack narrating, we’re showing what Memorial Day means to the citizens of Maytown,” Good explained. “We’re doing it from a citizen’s perspective.”

Lady Bears’ Track Team Tops Garden Spot
BY ERIC PYLES
Most teams have big end of season goals, like winning a league title or making district and state playoffs but a simple goal that is universally strived for is winning the final game of the season. The girl’s track team did just that on May 10, topping Garden Spot 85-65 in the season finale. A trio of Lady Bears paved the way with two event wins apiece starting with Carly Sedun leading sweeps in both the shot put and discus. Genevieve McDonald did her work in the sprints, taking the 100m and 200m while Madeline Quinn claimed the 800m and the 1600m title. Elizabethtown came up just short of a relay sweep, settling for wins in the 400m and 1600m relays. The Lady Bears final two wins came in the field with Zoey Myers taking the javelin and Megan Handshew the pole vault. On the boy’s side, the Bears were unable to top Spot, falling 9554. Three Bears accounted for all seven individual wins with the 400m relay team helping out. Ethan Jones collected three wins, topping the field in the long and triple jumps as well as the discus. Carlton Wise doubled, taking the pole vault and javelin while Caiden Herr swept both hurdle events. GIRLS’ LACROSSE A light stretch had the girl’s lacrosse team in action just once, hosting Red Lion on May 7th. Etown managed to keep things close though intermission, but the Lady Lions pulled away in the second half, posting a 17-7 win. Jordyn Gutshall finished with 10 saves while Kiaralie Santiago-Ortiz, Brooke Horst, Moira Shott and Hailey Mertz each had one goal to
back Lizzy Carter’s hat trick. SOFTBALL As the softball team entered the stretch run the Lady Bears found themselves stuck in a one step forward, one step back rut. On May 5th they claimed a 15-0, three inning, win over Lebanon. Brooke Bryan and Bri Edgell combined for the shutout with Bryan getting the win for her two innings of work. Carli Zerphey and Sydney Stewart paced the offense, each driving in two runs, with one hit apiece. The Lady Bears were back in action one day later where a late rally was not enough to prevent a 9-5 loss to Lampeter-Strasburg. L-S did their work early, bouncing Kristin Geesey after just four innings and eight runs. Bryan finished the final three innings and was on the hook for the final Lampeter-Strasburg score. E-town’s failed late rally came in the sixth inning with Stewart’s two RBI atbat highlighting the five-run frame. Elizabethtown got back to moving forward on the 7th by knocking off Solanco, 10-9. This time Geesey was able to withstand the opposing surge to cover all seven innings and collect the win. The bulk of the action came in the first two frames where the Lady Bears jumped out to a 9-5 edge. A single run in the fourth provided the necessary cushion to withstand Solanco’s four run fourth that closed the gap to 10-9. Jess Zimmerman and Sophia Finch finished with one hit each and Ava Fair. The trio combined for four RBI. The Lady Bears took their next step back on May 10th in the form of a 17-11 loss to Manheim Township. Zimmerman and Finch combined for seven RBIs and three hits,
but it was not enough to outlast the Streaks. Zimmerman spread her four RBIs out over three at-bats while Finch needed just one swing to collect three RBIs, smashing a three-run homerun. Geesey posted another complete game in taking the loss. VOLLEYBALL The volleyball team got back to winning, halting a seven-match slide, and replacing it with a fourmatch winning streak. A 3-1 win over Lebanon on May 6th started the action with the Bears posting wins of 25-19, 25-18 and 25-22 to counter’s the Cedar’s game two win. Dylan Shepherd dished out 36 assists with Rudy Woitas collecting 16 kills. Bryan Murray (11 kills) and Matthew Gilhool (eight kills, four blocks) chipped in while William O’Connell added a team high seven digs and five aces. The Bears picked up their next win in the sweetest place on Earth, outlasting Hershey 3-2. E-town had the Trojans on the ropes after opening with wins of 25-19 and 25-23 but Hershey evened the match, winning 25-17 and 25-22. E-town secured the victory with an 18-16 game five win. Woitas finished with 22 kills and 21 digs while Shepherd tallied 47 assists. Murry added 13 kills an O’Connell 29 digs. Elizabethtown was back in action on the 10th this time getting by Cocalico 3-1 thanks to wins of 25-20, 25-23 and 25-11 that countered Cocalico’s 25-22 game three win. Woitas’ 21 kills and Shephard’s 23 assists led the way while O’Connell added four aces. The Bears finished their run on the 11th by sweeping Manheim Township, 25-17, 25-13 and 25-19. E-town’s quick work left Woitas
with just 11 kills and one block and Shepherd with 27 assists. O’Connell added a team high four digs. BOYS’ LACROSSE The boy’s lacrosse team picked up one final win on their way to the end of the 2021 season, a May 5th via a 4-0 final over Cedar Crest. Joe Zink notched his first shutout by turning away 18 shots while Carson NyeSmith led the offense with two goals. Sam Azzalina and Colby Hall added one score each. One day later the Bears fell to Hempfield 7-3 with the Knights taking control of the game over the second and third quarters, outscoring E-town 7-1. Azzalina picked up two goals while Jake Rudy accounted for the final score. Zink finished with 10 saves. Zink closed out the season with an 11 save effort in an 11-4 loss to Ephrata on the 7th. Azzalina and Hall split the four scores down the middle. BASEBALL The baseball team remained busy as the days in May dwindled. The Bears dropped Lebanon by a 14-4 final on the 5th. Josh Kreider earned the easy five innings win with Tanner Breault and Jake Black leading the offense with a combined seven RBIs. Up next was a 9-8 setback opposite Solanco on the 7th. Black got the start, but it was Tyler Souders taking the loss after allowing three runs while recording no outs in the seventh. Cael Brandt finished the final inning in relief of Souders. Justin Black, Ben Wentling and Owen Zell, led the offense with two RBI each. The Bears got back to winning on the 10th, slipping by Penn Manor 5-4. Kreider got the start and a no-decision for his four
innings of work while Brandt picked up the win in relief. E-town plated all five of their runs in the sixth thanks to Zell, Kreider and Josh Rudy, capping the comeback. Another setback came on the 11th in the form of a 16-6 loss to Hempfield. Souders and Zell had
two hits and two RBIs apiece, but it was not enough. Souders ended up taking the loss after allowing 11 runs over his 2.2 innings. Mitchell Garber covered the next 1.1 innings while Braden Cummings closed things out by securing the final two outs.

By participating in a 5K in Mount Joy, you can make a difference in the lives of children halfway around the world. The Arm of Hope 5K will be held on Saturday, May 22, beginning at 9 a.m. at Hope Community Church, 1806 Harrisburg Ave., Mount Joy. There is also an opportunity to participate virtually from now through Friday, May 21. “The Arm of Hope 5K is raising funds to help bring street children to summer camp at the Arm of Hope ministry center in Ghana for fun, education and Bible lessons,” explained Greg Grove, race codirector. “Arm of Hope is a Ghanaian-run ministry that operates Bible
clubs and provides education for children living in the streets and slums of Ghana.” Arm of Hope began as a partnership between Philip Darko and Hope Community Church. Darko wanted to offer the opportunity for the children of Accra, Ghana, to receive an education. He named the nonprofit Arm of Hope because he envisioned an “arm” reaching from Pennsylvania to Ghana to offer hope and help. The program grew from sponsoring 77 children its first year to helping hundreds attend school and participate in children’s camp. The 5K is the organization’s biggest fundraiser, Grove noted, adding that although last year’s
event was all virtual, it was the group’s most successful one yet. “We raised over $10,000 last year,” he stated. The race takes place on a flat course through Mount Joy. “It’s a very family-friendly route,” Grove said. “We have walkers, runners, people pushing strollers, people who bring their dogs. We invite anyone to participate. The more the merrier.” For people who want to participate virtually, a phone app that uses GPS will help chart their course and track results to include with the in-person results. Prizes will be awarded for the first- and second-place male and female runners in the under 40 and 40-andover categories. These top runners

will receive a carved wooden trophy from Ghana. “We ask everyone who participates to fundraise to help Arm of Hope,” Grove remarked. “It takes just $50 to send a kid to camp.” Along with prizes for the top finishers, prizes will be awarded to the top fundraisers. “We also have door prizes like you wouldn’t believe,” Grove said. “Almost everybody walks away with a prize.” He added that the Arm of Hope 5K offers an opportunity to make a difference while having fun at the same time. “It’s just a really fun day,” he said. “It’s a chance to get outside, win a prize and support a great cause.” For more information on the Arm of Hope 5K or to register, visit www.armofhopeinghana.org/5k.

Fundraiser To Provide COVID Relief In Bolivia Scholarship A local youth recently undertook a raise $2,000 so each of the close to Applications Available project to aid Bolivian orphans as part 100 orphans could receive a new pair of shoes. Working from her interest in art and fashion, Lily decided to hand-paint bayong bags her Thai aunt helped her purchase from a woman-owned Thai business. “I was excited that purchasing the purses was also going to bless the artisans who handmade them in Thailand. It’s like a double blessing,” Lily explained. Starting with 16 bags, Lily used acrylic paints to decorate the purses with her own design or with different flower patterns she learned through YouTube tutorials. By producing something both beautiful and useful, she hoped other women and girls would join her fundraising efforts. As of May 3, Lily had raised $1,200 toward the effort by asking family and friends to donate online to FIA’s work in Bolivia. Community members interested in buying any of the remaining bags may email Lily at ssmedich@comcast.net. Direct donations to FIA’s ministries in Bolivia can be made at www .fiaintl.org/donate/. Lily hopes to have the full $2,000 raised by early June, so

donations are sought in May. FIA provided close to $45,000 in 2020 for COVID relief to the hard-hit town of Guayaramerin, in northern Bolivia. National pastors who partner with FIA have been using contributions to distribute food and medicine to the small villages in Cauchuela Esperanza and Primero de Mayo. A caravan of three pickup trucks and a minivan have delivered enough food for more than 150 sick or grieving families. Waves of relief resources continue to be distributed every two weeks. “(In northern Bolivia), 90% of families (have) at least one person who contracted the virus. The local pastors who partner with us are desperate to offer hope and tangible demonstrations of God’s love to the villagers,” shared Tim Johnston, FIA’s executive director.
The Elizabethtown Fair announced that a maximum of six $1,000 scholarships will be awarded through the Msgr. John W. Mignot Scholarship Program. The scholarships are available to Pennsylvania residents who have been active for at least two years at a fair, either currently or previously, and who will attend college or other type of institution of higher learning in the fall. Other eligibility criteria apply. Qualifying students must submit their applications to the Elizabethtown Fair by Wednesday, June 30. Applications must be completed

of a larger COVID-19 outreach through Friends In Action Intl. (FIA), a nonprofit headquartered in Middletown. The project began when Lily Medich, 11, of York, learned through FIA’s website about the great need in Bolivia. Northern Bolivia in particular has been significantly affected during the pandemic and continues to be severely under-resourced. The town hospital has a maximum capacity of 35 beds and one ventilator, and many people from nearby villages along the Amazon River travel two days to find medical items as simple as acetaminophen. Bolivian doctors have run out of many medications. “I can’t imagine living somewhere where there are no food banks, no shelters, or no clothing banks to help the people. I just knew I had to help in any way I could,” commented Lily. Lily decided to raise funds to help the Hogar de Andre de Esperanza y Alegria Orphanage. Due to another round of lockdowns, the children had not been able to get new shoes in quite some time, so Lily set a goal to
