Creating Community With A Box BY CATHY MOLITORIS

Outside her home at 124 Cedar St. in Elizabethtown, Emily Henderson is building a community. For two years, she has operated The Puzzle Box of Elizabethtown, encouraging people to “take one, leave one, or do a bit of both.” “My mother-in-law moved in with us, and she started buying and

he pandemic may have forced the Maytown Memorial Day committee to cancel its annual parade, but it didn’t stop the group from getting creative. “We were having a committee meeting, and one of our members said, ‘Why don’t we do something virtual?’” recalled Linda Good, committee member. So, the group got to work rounding up old photos of parades of the past as well as pictures of the town square through the years to showcase in a video that will be released on Memorial Day, Monday, May 31, on YouTube and will also be available for purchase. Lifelong Maytown resident Jack Frank narrates the video, which runs about 20 minutes. He said choosing not to hold the parade and ceremony this year was a difficult decision, but a necessary one. “We always start the parade with the Bainbridge Band, but they are not performing together this year,” he explained. “The high school band also could not participate. We just thought it wouldn’t be much of a parade without the bands, and by

Contemporary voices and diverse stories will take the spotlight in a series of staged readings to be held at Susquehanna Stage. “The Undercurrent” will feature four readings and will kick off at 6:30 p.m. on Saturday, May 29, with “Tigers Be Still.” “ We wanted to find a way to highlight some of these more contemporary pieces of theater, titles you don’t necessarily see in other theaters’ mainstage shows,” explained Asher Johnson, who is the producer of the series and the

of Maytown,” Good explained. “We’re doing it from a citizen’s perspective.” Frank and Good are two Maytown citizens for whom Memorial Day is especially important. Frank’s father served in the Navy during World War II and participated in the D-Day invasion, and Good’s father also served in the Navy. Good said the video is a perfect way to honor veterans and their importance to Maytown. “I think people will really enjoy seeing this video and reliving some of the history of Memorial Day in Maytown,” she noted, “and I think they might see themselves or people they know in the pictures.” The Maytown Memorial Day video will be available on Monday, May 31, through a YouTube link. Copies will also be for sale, with proceeds benefiting the Maytown Historical Society. More details, including the link, will be available on the Maytown Memorial Day Facebook page closer to Memorial Day or can be found by searching for “Maytown Community” on Facebook or “Maytown Memorial Day Celebration 2021” on YouTube. To order a copy of the video, email Good at goodfarm1950@gmail.com.

the time we got the OK to maybe organize something, we had run out of time. It takes a long time to plan this parade.” The video features Frank talking about the history of the Maytown parade and the importance of the Maytown square. Several residents are featured in the video as well, along with a prayer and benediction and the playing of the national anthem. Frank is especially proud of one part of the video that he hopes will become an annual tradition when the ceremony and parade return in person. “We will play taps and we will read the names of all of the people from East Donegal Township who were killed in combat since the Civil War,” he said. “This is the first time these names are being read. We’ll show pictures of them, and we’ll talk about what happened to them.” Typically, the Maytown Memorial Day ceremony features a speaker who is a member of the military, but this year, the committee wanted to take a different approach. “With this video and with Jack narrating, we’re showing what Memorial Day means to the citizens

doing puzzles, but when she was done with them, I had to figure out what to do with all of them,” Emily recalled. “I was donating them to the senior center in Elizabethtown, but then I got this idea to share them with my neighbors.” Her husband, Tom, built the box for the puzzles, and Emily started promoting the box on Facebook. The project took off. “It was very popular, and soon people wanted books, too, so he built a top part of the box,” Emily said. She noted that all of this was pre-pandemic, but that her project really blossomed during 2020. “My neighbors tell me that it’s visited frequently,” Emily noted, adding that her Facebook page had more than 500 members at one time.

Before Project Lifesaver came to Lancaster County on Oct. 20, 2012, an elderly man wandered from his home during the winter. Much effort was put into finding him, but he was not located until a day or two later. He had passed away 250 feet behind his home. “If he would have had a working wristband from Project Lifesaver, we more than likely would have found him,” stated Pilot Club of Lancaster member Cathy Cieslinski. “Project Lifesaver is all about bringing your loved ones home, and we saw a need in our county. Implementing this program in our county was important to our club.” Project Lifesaver is a search-andrescue program to locate at-risk individuals who wander. Its mission is to use state-of-the-art technology in assisting those who care for individuals with Alzheimer’s, dementia, autism, developmental disorders, Down syndrome, and other brainrelated challenges across the United States. According to Project Lifesaver’s data, in over 3,400 searches, Project Lifesaver has achieved a 100% success rate on an average of less than 30 minutes. Pilot Club has partnered with 18 municipalities to bring Project Lifesaver to Lancaster County. Lt. Jennifer Brubaker from East Hempfield Township Police Department was one of the first police officers to receive training. “The equipment took time to work with and feel comfortable using,” said Brubaker. “In a moment where lives are at stake, you don’t want to use equipment that you need to think much about operating. You want to get right to work and get moving with it.” Brubaker said she decided to receive training because she has two autistic goddaughters, so she saw

When a caregiver calls 911 and reports that a participant has wandered, a search team triangulates the area and uses a receiver to locate the individual through his or her transmitter. “People should enroll in the program because, although this won’t

Retro Road Trip: PA’s Drive-In Movie Theaters

There are few things in this world that trigger a case of nostalgia for baby boomers like drive-in movie theaters. But, it isn’t only boomers who appreciate these icons of entertainment; Gen Xers and millennials are packing the kids in the car or setting out for the perfect date night. Seriously, if you want to score some points with your significant other, a surprise trip to one of Pennsylvania’s drive-ins would be a great departure from the same old date-night routine. Pennsylvania was an early adopter of the outdoor movie theater craze. In April 1934, Shankweiler’s Drive-In in Orefield, Lehigh County, became the second drive-in movie theater to open in the U.S. Today, it is the oldest operating drive-in in the country. The Keystone State ranks second behind New York in the number still in operation. The evolution of technology, like the switch from window speakers to radio sound and the move from traditional to digital screens, has improved the quality of picture and sound. The Veterans Memorial at Mount Joy Cemetery will be dedicated in a ceremony on Saturday, May 29. Matthew Hay, a Life Scout in Boy Scout Troop 39 in Mount Joy, invites local veterans, veterans’ families, and all members of the community to the dedication ceremony of the Veterans Memorial at Mount Joy Cemetery, which he designed and constructed for his Eagle service project. The ceremony will take place on Saturday, May 29, at 9 a.m. at the cemetery, 275 Terrace Road. Military members and Scouts are encouraged to wear their uniforms. Matthew, 15, chose his project because his father and greatgrandfather are veterans. His father served in the U.S. Navy Operation Enduring Freedom, and his great-grandfather served in Korea. Matthew said, “I wanted to do something that would honor local veterans for years to come.” Matthew designed the project himself and installed the memorial with the help of his Scout troop. The memorial is located in a circular grass area approximately 57 feet in diameter. It includes a 46-foot walking path, seven flag poles, two benches, and a large granite memorial stone.

Displayed on the flag poles are the American flag; the flags of the Army, Marine Corps, Navy, Air Force, Coast Guard and Merchant Marines; and the POW/MIA flag. To complete the project, Matthew has raised over $20,000 in monetary donations and donations of equipment and materials. He is still accepting donations toward the memorial to help with future maintenance and upkeep costs. Matthew is homeschooled and lives with his father, Josh; mother, Ashleigh; and three siblings in Elizabethtown. Matthew has been involved in Boy Scouts since he was 8 years old. For more information or request special accommodations for anyone planning to attend the ceremony, contact eagleveteransmemorial @yahoo.com or 717-598-7277.

is better then not playing at all?? The Bears put that imaginary theIf the saying “It is better to have ory to the test by winning eight of loved and lost then to never have their final 12 games, including their loved at all” is true, then it is fair to final two to finish with a 10-10 wonder if it is also true for a high mark. The late season push vaulted school baseball team that getting to E-town up to 18th in the District 3play but just missing the postseason 5A rankings but left the Bears a mere 0.005414 out of the 16-team playoff field. Elizabethtown’s penultimate victory came opposite Garden Spot on the 13th and required four innings. Tanner Breault and Josh Kreider sparked the offense with a combined eight RBIs while Jake Black enjoyed the easy day on Photo by Cheri Sine the mound. gave up two hits with three strikeouts and one walk. Braden Cummings needed four pitches to close things out and invoke the 15-run rule. Breault went 3-3 including a third inning grand slam that pushed his RBI total to five. Breault added a one run single in his first at-bat of the third which is also where Kreider picked up one of his three RBIs on a fielder’s choice. Kreider’s other two RBIs came on a second inning homer that put E-town up 5-0. The bats were not as lively one day later, but Elizabethtown still managed a 5-2 victory over Shippensburg. Kreider needed just 85 pitches to cover all seven innings, allowing two earned runs while walking none and striking out eight. Kreider also helped his own cause with another two-run shot, this one giving E-town a 5-0 cushion heading into Shippensburg’s final atbats. Those insurance runs came in handy as the Greyhounds plated two in their half of the frame, setting the final at 5-2. Jake Black also drove in two runs despite finishing with no hits. Black was the beneficiary of a Shippensburg error in the fifth that plated two runs and stretched the

lead to 3-0. GIRLS’ LACROSSE The girl’s lacrosse season officially ended on May 12th when the Lady Bears traveled to Ephrata for a make-up affair that went to the Lady Mountaineers, 11-5. Hailey Mertz and Aiesha Rios netted two scores each while Lizzy Carter tacked on the final goal. Jordyn Gutshall moved into second place on the team’s all-time saves list with a final game tally of 11 saves. TRACK As far as annual trips go, the one from Elizabethtown to Landisville is not all that exciting, but the track and field team enjoys the trip every year. The reason, the L-L Championship Meet which is held at Hempfield High School and took place on May 14th and 15th. Behind seven medal winning performances the Lady Bears finished sixth in the final team standings, just four points behind fifth place Cocalico. Madeline Quinn and Carly Sedun were at the forefront, collecting two medals each. Quinn did her work in the 1600m and 3200m, taking silver in both races behind McCaskey’s Arielle Breuninger.

Unfortunately, the reward was a spot opposite Warwick, the 13-1 Section One champ, for their quarterfinal tilt. The result was a 3-0 Warrior victory that ended the Bears season. Sedun made her mark in the field, collecting silver medals for her work in the shot put and discus. Sedun had company on the L-L discus podium in Francine Ohlson who enjoyed a fifth-place finish. Zoey Myers finished out the medal winning in the field, snatching bronze in the javelin. Genevieve McDonald just missed qualifying for the finals in the 200m, instead missing on a tiebreaker after finishing her prelim race with the same time as Donegal’s Faith Garber. McDonald was able to pick up a medal in the 400m relay with help from Adyson Haak, Olivia Anson and Lilly Heistand who finished seventh. The Lady Bears final L-L medal came from the 1600m relay team of Jordan DiRisio, Haak, McDonald and Liah Drager who finished eighth. Over on the boy’s side, Ethan Jones posted the top finish with a seventh place in the high jump. Jones added an 11th place in the discus but neither met the district qualifying standard needed to advance, bringing the season to a close on the boy’s side. BOYS’ VOLLEYBALL The 2021 season was by no means easy for the boys’ volleyball team. The Bears were forced to endure COVID pauses that forced them to play nine games in one 12 days stretch and another five games in a seven day stretch. Despite all the obstacles the Bears closed out the regular season with five straight wins, finishing 10-9 and just outside the District 3-3A playoff field. “This can all be summarized by simply saying that this was a ‘Team

SOFTBALL It was déjà vu all over again for the E-town softball team. Last Wednesday, and for the second straight time the Lady Bears topped Warwick in the L-L semifinals, earning a spot opposite Lampeter-Strasburg in the championship game. Kristin Geesey allowed three runs on eight hits with six strikeouts and two walks to secure the win. Jess Zimmerman provided the offense early while Sophia Finch tacked on a few insurance runs late. Zimmerman got things rolling with a tworun triple in the first that help Etown jump out to a 4-0 lead while Finch smacked a two-run shot in the sixth to give Geesey extra cushion. The final push to the L-L playoffs saw the Lady Bears top Garden Spot, Manheim Central and Mechanicsburg by a combined 23-3 with the bulk of the damage coming in the 14-1 win over Central on the 13th. Geesey got the easy five innings win while Zimmerman and Finch came through again. Both rapped out three hits with Finch collecting five RBIs and Zimmerman three to give Geesey all the room she needed. One day later the Lady Bears

Along with books and puzzles, the Hendersons began adding even more to the box, including board games, eggs and baked goods. “We have a small farm in Manheim, and we had a few baby chicks, and soon I had more eggs than I knew what to do with,” Emily said. “Then, last summer, one day my husband asked me to make whoopie pies and I did, but with just three of us living here, we didn’t need 30 whoopie pies, so I put them out there as well.” Emily said she’s now baking two or three times a week and adding treats to the box. Her daughter, Reya, began selling homemade jewelry out of the box as well. While the puzzles and books are free, there is a small fee for the eggs, baked goods and jewelry.

Emily said the experience of creating a community box has been overwhelmingly positive. “We keep growing with what we’re offering,” she stated. “It’s so neat to see the response of excitement and appreciation for the box.” She works in early childhood education, and she was excited to recently add two bins to the box one for children’s books and one for books for teens. “Reading is something I encourage for all children, so I love to see that happening,” she said. “Take your child for a walk in some fresh air, pick up a book or a puzzle and then bring it home to enjoy together.” For more information on Emily’s project, search for “The Puzzle Box of Elizabethtown” on Facebook.

The square in Maytown will be the site of a brick dedication ceremony on Monday, May 31. BY CATHY MOLITORIS

Sara Gutshall is devoted to veterans, and it shows. For the past year, the Maytown resident has been coordinating a fundraiser to replace the crumbling walkways in Maytown square with engraved bricks bearing the names of community members and businesses. The bricks will be dedicated at a ceremony on Monday, May 31, beginning at 1 p.m. “We’re going to have a very nice dedication,” said Gutshall, who is president of the American Legion Auxiliary Unit 809. “I’m going to have laying of wreaths to honor our veterans. This year is the 100th anniversary of the American Legion Auxiliary. I think this is the most appropriate time to have a dedication.” Holly Shaffner, a 24-year veteran of the Coast Guard who is originally from Maytown, will be flying in from California to serve as master of ceremonies, Gutshall said. Sandy Heisey will play a medley of armed forces theme songs on the keyboard, and members of the Marietta American Legion Riders Post 466 will serve as a special guard for the square. The Rhythm Singers from Donegal High School will sing the national anthem. “We will have an antique, craft and collectibles show going from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. on the same day on the outer parts of the square,” Gutshall noted.

EAMS To Present “The Wind In The Willows” Elizabethtown Area Middle School (EAMS) will present its spring play, “The Wind in the Willows,” on demand. Performed and recorded earlier in May, the production will be available for viewing on Saturday and Sunday, May 29 and 30, at www.showtix4u.com/event -details/53279. There is a fee to view the performance. “The Wind in the Willows,” a children’s book by British novelist Kenneth Grahame, was first published

in 1908 and was adapted for the stage by R. Eugene Jackson. The play centers on Toad’s obsession with sports cars, which eventually lands him in jail, thereby providing an opportunity for a band of weasels to take over his home. The cast consists of Brendan Fritz as Toad, Marley Stauffer as Water Rat, Josie Sirinides as Mole, Scott Creason as Badger, Anna Hollinger as the Sheriff and Michael Harris as the Deputy.

Gutshall, who has lived in Maytown her whole life, said the square is an important part of the community. “When I was a little girl, we had to go down to the square to pump our water,” she recalled, noting that over time, weather, use and tree roots destroyed most of the walkways around the square. “I was worried about people walking in there,” Gutshall said. “I really prayed about this.” After a driver hit the square and caused a lot of damage, Gutshall decided to take action. “God spared the military monuments in the square honoring our veterans, so it seemed like a vision to me that something had to be done,” she added. Gutshall has taken orders for more than 350 engraved bricks over the past year or so. “It takes 1,873 bricks to cover the whole square, but I’m really happy with how many engraved bricks we’ve sold,” she remarked. “Each engraved brick tells a story, a history of our town.” Bricks for the project were provided by Drohan Brick & Supply, and landscaping was donated by Tom Jones Landscape and Lawn Care. In addition to installing more engraved bricks, Gutshall hopes to erect iron archways on the square in the future. Bricks are still available for engraving. To order a brick, call Gutshall at 717-426-2107.

The Kiwanis Club of Elizabethtown will hold an outdoor bingo event on Saturday, June 5, at noon. This picnic-style fundraiser will take place at the Elizabethtown Fairgrounds, 900 E. Each group will be given a grassy area to play from, and organizers encourage attendees to bring their own chairs or blankets as seating is not guaranteed. Attendees will have chances to win prize baskets from local businesses. To order discounted tickets in advance, attendees may contact

elizabethtownkiwanis@gmail.com or visit www.eventbrite.com and search for “Outdoor Bingo” with the location Elizabethtown. Tickets purchased on-site will be full price. director of “Tigers Be Still.” “We wanted to create an atmosphere not only for theater lovers, but also for educators and people in the community to see stories on stage that reflect the people in our community.” “Tigers Be Still” features a cast of four and focuses on a young woman, Sherry, who is finding her footing in a new job while moving back into her childhood home with her mother and sister. “It’s a great show,” said Liz Checchia, who plays the sister, Grace. “There are beautiful moments within this very comedic show. … It’s very well written, and there are jokes and lots of laughs, but then out of nowhere, these beautiful, dramatic moments happen.” Bob Checchia, who plays Joe, Sherry’s boss, said the show highlights some unusual characters. “The timing and rhythm of this show keeps it flowing with short scenes and dialogue that is quick and fast,” he noted. “There is a quirkiness to the characters.” And, Johnson added, “While everything is happening with the characters in the show, there is a tiger on the loose during all of this.” He said although the show is a staged reading, audiences should

expect a fully formed performance. “The only difference is the actors are going to be holding their scripts in their hands,” he explained. “I didn’t require them to memorize their lines, but there will be lighting cues, sound cues, costumes, blocking, all the things you’d expect to see on stage.” Each performance in “The Undercurrent” will also include a partnership with local organizations or theater companies that reflect the values of each play. “Tigers Be Still” focuses on mental health, and the show will feature a questionand-answer session afterward with members of WellSpan Philhaven. Although the performance is free, donations will be accepted for the organization as well. Additional plays in the stagedreading series are “Pipeline” on Saturday, July 10; “Native Gardens” on Saturday, Aug. 21; and “Blackbird” on Saturday, Nov. 6. Shows will be performed on the theater’s Gallery Stage. Susquehanna Stage is located at 133 W. Market St., Marietta. For more information, visit www.susquehannastage.com.
