Strawberry Festival Will Help Preserve History BY CATHY MOLITORIS
It’s a sweet tradition, and it returns this year for the first time since 2019. The 15th annual Strawberry Festival will be held on Sunday, June 5, from noon to 4 p.m. at the historic Haldeman Mansion, 230 Locust Grove Road, Bainbridge. The festivities will include food, music and more. “We’ll have a lot of strawberry desserts, including strawberry
milkshakes as well as chocolate and vanilla milkshakes,” said Elaine Jackson, corresponding secretary for the Haldeman Mansion Preservation Society. “We’ll have strawberry shortcake and homemade strawberry lemonade. We get our strawberries from Masonic Village, so they are local, and they are delicious.” Additional food items will include hot dogs, bratwurst, chicken corn soup and chili, along with chips, sodas and water. Inviting the public to a benefit barbecue and bake sale are Nicole Wells (left) and Christine Eifert.
Barbecue Will Benefit Ukraine BY CATHY MOLITORIS
hat you eat for dinner on Wednesday, June 22, can make a difference in the lives of orphans in Ukraine. Hope Community Church will host a drive-through chicken and pork barbecue and bake sale at the church, 1806 Harrisburg Ave., Mount Joy, from 4 to 6 p.m. Proceeds will benefit World Without Orphans (WWO), a nonprofit dedicated to providing support for orphaned and vulnerable children. “You’ll have three options to choose from for the meal,” said Christine Eifert, who is coordinating the fundraiser with Nicole Wells. “You can get a half-chicken, with baked potato, applesauce and roll; a pork barbecue sandwich with chips and applesauce; or a pound of cold pork barbecue to take home and heat up for dinner.” Barbecue meals will be provided by Peters’ Barbecue. A variety of baked goods will also be for sale. “We’ll have sticky buns, cookies, pies, cupcakes, brownies,

Three Cheers For Carli BY CATHY MOLITORIS
For Carli Zerphey, nothing beats the thrill and challenge of being a cheerleader. The Elizabethtown Area High School (EAHS) junior not only loves the sport, but she had an opportunity to show off her skills when she was chosen to cheer for the Big 33 Football Classic on May 30. “I love everything about the sport, and I love how I decide how I am going to push myself and advance with my skills,” Carli said. “You have to fight for what skills you want. than in orphanages,” said Karmen Friesen, executive director of WWO. Friesen noted that although Ukraine has made great strides in significantly reducing the number of children growing up in institutions, the current war has caused a setback. “To date, nearly two-thirds of Ukraine’s children have been displaced,” he stated. Eifert said the barbecue and bake sale provide an easy way for people to help. “Everybody who watches the news knows what’s happening in Ukraine,” she emphasized. “This is an opportunity to show solidarity with the other side of the world. If this was happening at our doorstep, wouldn’t we want to somebody to help us?” Preorders for the barbecue are due by Saturday, June 11. A limited number of meals will be available for purchase on the date of the event. you name it,” Eifert noted. “It will all be donated by the community.” Eifert said she got the idea for the fundraiser after feeling moved to action while watching news coverage of the war in Ukraine. She has a lot of experience coordinating fundraisers in the community and knew she could put her skills to use to help. “I’m kind of a fundraising maven,” she said with a laugh. “It comes naturally to me. I love it.” When considering what organization to support, WWO was a natural choice. “The people with this organization are local, and they are really doing the work in Ukraine,” Eifert said. “They came to my church asking for financial donations, and I thought, ‘I could write a check, but I’d much rather do a fundraiser.’ People want to help, but they don’t know how. This is a concrete way to help.” WWO was founded in 2010. “This global movement got its roots in Ukraine, where churches had the vision to see every child of their country thriving in families, rather

A silent auction will feature items donated by local businesses and individuals, including artwork. Among the variety of children’s activities that will be held during the festival are a coloring contest and an opportunity to guess how many candies are in a jar. Live music will be performed by NEV Bluegrass. Attendees are encouraged to bring blankets or lawn chairs to sit on and enjoy the food and music. Guided tours of the mansion will be offered by Tina Mark and Judy Kay Bard, who will provide information about the building’s history. “These will be ‘semi tours,’ since the mansion is currently under renovation,” Jackson noted. Built in 1811, Haldeman Mansion was the home of Samuel Haldeman, a professor and scientist. The Strawberry Festival is a fundraiser for the restoration of the mansion, Jackson said. The preservation society has helped to repair walls and floors in one part of the building and is now focusing on replacing mantles above two fireplaces in the ballroom before renovating the mansion’s museum room. The Haldeman Mansion Preservation Society’s vision is to restore the mansion for new use as a community gathering place, local history and Native American museum and educational center. Jackson invites everyone to come out for the festival. “You can enjoy some great food, see the beautiful Susquehanna River, relax and have a nice, fun, family outing,” she stated. “It’s a fun day to spend with friends.” Admission to the Strawberry Festival is free. There is a small charge for parking. For more information, call 717-426-3794.

I quickly knew that’s what I wanted to do,” she remarked. She cheered for the Elizabethtown Boys Club from age 4 until she started high school, at which point she cheered for the varsity team. This past year, she cheered at World Cup in Lancaster. She knew she wanted to try out to cheer at the Big 33 Football Classic after seeing her sisters make the team when they were seniors in high school. “I really wanted

Watershed Expo Will Offer Hands-On Learning memorial to Jim Benedict, one of our longtime members who passed away.” As Gergely explained, the event is an opportunity to showcase the importance of the local watersheds and promote the mission of the Chiques Creek Watershed Alliance. “We’re a volunteer organization with a mission to promote good stewardship of the land within the Chiques Creek Watershed in order to protect and preserve the Chiques Creek for the present community and future generations,” he said. While the organization holds several outreach activities each year, the expo is its largest event and draws the most people, he noted. “It started off as a much smaller event that has grown over the
years,” he remarked. “The Manheim Farm Show has been very generous in allowing us to host the event in recent years. With the Chiques Creek right there, it’s a perfect setting.” See Watershed pg 12

The event will be held at the Manheim Farm Show Complex, 502 Adele Ave., on Tuesday, June 7, from 5:30 to 8 p.m. “ We’ll have a number of exhibitors, a rain barrel giveaway, live music, activities such as fish print T-shirt making and a water balloon launch, a fish shocking demonstration, a macroinvertebrates lesson at the creek by the county parks department, a food truck, and free ice cream and drinks compliments of Kreider Farms,” said Steve Gergely, president of Chiques Creek Watershed Alliance. Exhibitors will include Penn State Agriculture and Environmental Center, the Chesapeake
Bay Foundation, the Lancaster County Master Gardeners, Lancaster County Conservancy, and the Lancaster County Department of Parks and Recreation. Lancaster County Conservation District will have a spotted lanternfly display, and a wood duck display and beekeeping display will be featured, among other workshops and demonstrations. “This year we are excited to be offering tours during the expo of the recent floodplain restoration project along Chiques in the adjacent Memorial Park,” Gergely stated. “Representatives of RETTEW Associates, who designed the project, will be on hand to give tours and discuss the project. The project created additional floodplain volume, natural planting areas, as well as walking paths. We also recently completed a small seating area and plantings in the park as a
