SERVING THE LOCAL COMMUNITIES SINCE 1954

VOL LXII • NO 17

Bringing Faith And Fellowship Along For The Ride BY CATHY MOLITORIS

Over the past seven years, Lifecycles has helped young people ride the equivalent of more than four times around the Earth on their bicycles. “I track all the mileage of our local rides and our bigger trips, and we have now ridden more than 110,000 miles,” said Lee DeRemer, who runs Lifecycles with his wife, Marcie. The organization is open to boys and girls ages 12 to 18 and offers participants a chance to enjoy friendship, mentoring and bike riding, all with a faith focus.

Pastor Daryl Heistand (left); Miranda Heistand (second from left), holding daughter Selah; and Arlene Heistand invite the community to a strawberry social at Rissers Mennonite Church.

Celebrating Strawberries BY CATHY MOLITORIS

une is strawberry season in Lancaster County, and Rissers Mennonite Church will celebrate with a strawberry social. The event will be held at the church, 8360 Elizabethtown Road, Elizabethtown, beginning at 4 p.m. on Saturday, June 12. “We’ll have lawn games and kids’ activities like a pinata and bean bag toss, and we’ll have our playground open for kids to play on,” said Arlene Heistand, chair of the social committee. “We’ll serve a light supper, and then we’ll have a variety of strawberry desserts.” The social will also include two demonstrations, one on growing strawberries and one on making strawberry jelly. This is the first year the church is holding the strawberry social, said pastor Daryl Heistand, although the congregation has organized other community events in the past, including an apple festival. “We thought we’d try something new this year,” he noted. “ We

“It’s a chance to meet friends and have fun. You can play the games and enjoy the activities, or you can just sit around, eat and talk. It will be a very laid-back, easygoing event.”

The strawberry social offers a chance to enjoy tasty treats and socialize, said Arlene. “It’s a great opportunity for people who have been cooped up inside to get out and enjoy an evening outside,” she stated. Daryl agreed, adding, “It’s a chance to meet friends and have fun. You can play the games and enjoy the activities, or you can just sit around, eat and talk. It will be a very laid-back, easygoing event.” He said events like the strawberry social are important to the church members, who want to connect with their neighbors. “It’s a time for the community to come out and get to know us,” he explained. “We care about the people around us, and we want to encourage being friendly and working together. The more we know each other as a community, the better our community becomes.” Rissers Mennonite Church holds services on Sundays beginning at 9 a.m. with Sunday school for adults and children, followed by worship time at 10 a.m. For more information, call 717-653-4549.

Creating Community With A Box BY CATHY MOLITORIS

Outside her home at 124 Cedar St. in Elizabethtown, Emily Henderson is building a community. For two years, she has operated The Puzzle Box of Elizabethtown, encouraging people to “take one, leave one, or do a bit of both.” “My mother-in-law moved in with us, and she started buying and doing puzzles, but when she was done with them, I had to figure out what to do with all of them,” Emily recalled. and they will be doing a detailed demonstration of how to grow strawberries, including covering different varieties and cultivars,” he explained. “Many of the women in our church also make homemade jelly, so we thought it would be neat to do a demo about that as well. Not everybody has somebody in their family who makes jam or who has experience with making it, so this will be an opportunity to see how it’s done.”

planned it to happen just as strawberries are in peak season.” He emphasized that the demonstrations will be informative and educational. “We have people in our congregation who are avid gardeners, horticulturists really,

“We offer the boys and girls a positive experience, encouragement, a challenge, goal setting, mentoring and spiritual growth,” Lee explained. “Because our program includes all of that, there’s no room left for bullying or people making fun of each other. … We don’t have kids tearing each other down. We like to say we find out what the teens are doing right, and we build on that.” Lifecycles began its current season on April 19 and is looking for more riders as well as more volunteers. Currently, the group has a girls’ team that rides on Mondays in Lititz and three boys’ teams - one in Marietta on Tuesdays, one in Landisville on Thursdays and another in New Holland also on Thursdays. The group also rides on two Saturdays a month.

“This is 100% free for participants,” Lee noted. “There is never any cost for the riders. We have bikes, helmets and food for them. We provide a meal after each ride.” The organization is also looking for more volunteers. “If you would enjoy investing in a teenager, there are teenagers who need to have the encouragement and the example you can set,” he stated. “If you enjoy riding, whether you’re young or old, slow or fast, there’s a ride group waiting for you.” The group is also looking for volunteers to help serve meals or sign in participants at weekly rides. Lee emphasized that Lifecycles is open to any youths in the county, and no experience with bike riding is necessary. “We don’t have tryouts,” he remarked. “If you show up at Lifecycles, we believe you’re supposed to be there.” Along with weekly rides, Lifecycle members have the opportunity to participate in longer challenges as well. A group of eight boys and

five leaders will ride from the coast of Oregon to the coast of Delaware between Thursday, June 10, and Sunday, Aug. 8, covering 3,600 miles. Close to 50 others will participate in one of three weeklong challenge rides from Pittsburgh to Washington, D.C., later this summer. Lee noted that he’s been impressed with the impact leaders have made on the riders and with the way the youths have responded to the program. “For three hours on one of those evenings, or five hours on a Saturday, we pry the phones out of the teens’ fingers, and they find out they can live through the experience,” he said with a laugh. In all seriousness, he noted that God has been present with Lifecycles since the beginning. “We have ridden safely for seven years,” he said. “That’s a miracle. God has protected us, He has provided for us and He has sustained us.” For more information on Lifecycles, visit www.lifecyclesteam.org.

THOMAS W. FLECKENSTEIN

Programs for Eligible or Protected Handicapped Students In compliance with state and federal law, notice is hereby given by the Elizabethtown Area School District that it conducts ongoing identification activities as part of its school program for the purpose of identifying students who may be in need of special education and related services (eligible students). If your child is identified by the District as possibly in need of such services, you will be notified of the applicable procedure. Individualized services and programs are available for children who are determined to be eligible and in need of specially designed instruction due to the following condition(s): 1. Autism 2. Blindness or Visual Impairment 3. Deafness or Hearing Impairment 4. Developmental Delay (Early Intervention) 5. Intellectual Disability 6. Multiple Disabilities 7. Traumatic Brain Injury 8. Other Health Impairments 9. Orthopedic Impairment 10. Emotional Disturbance 11. Specific Learning Disability 12. Speech or Language Impairment If you believe that your school-age child may be in need of special education services and related programs, screening and evaluation processes designed to assess the needs of the child, and his/her eligibility are available to you at no cost, upon written request. You may request screening and evaluation at any time, whether or not your child is enrolled in the District’s public school program. Requests for evaluation and screening are to be made in writing to the building principal. In compliance with the state and federal law, the Elizabethtown Area School District will provide to each protected handicapped student without discrimination or cost to the student or family. Those related aids, services, or accommodations which are needed to provide equal opportunity to participate in and obtain the benefits of the school program and extracurricular activities to the maximum extent appropriate to the student’s abilities. In order to qualify as a protected handicapped student, the child must be schoolage with a physical or mental disability, which substantially limits or prohibits participation in or access to an aspect of the school program. These services and protections for “protected handicapped students” are distinct from those applicable to all eligible or exceptional students enrolled (or seeking enrollment) in special education programs. For further information on the rights of parents and children, provision of services, evaluation and screening (including purpose, time and location), and rights to due process procedures, you may contact the building principal. The Pennsylvania Department of Education (“PDE”) will destroy or have destroyed all test booklets for the Pennsylvania System of School Assessment (“PSSA”), Keystone Exams, and Pennsylvania Alternative System of Assessment (“PASA”) one year from the date on which student results are delivered. PDE will also destroy or have destroyed all answer booklets for the PSSA and Keystone exams and all media recordings for the PASA three years from the date on which the assessment is completed. All information gathered about your child by the public school is subject to the confidentiality provisions contained in Federal and State law. The District has policies and procedures in effect governing the collection, maintenance, destruction, and disclosure to third parties of this information. For information about these policies and procedures, as well as right of confidentiality and access to educational records, you may contact the building principal in writing. Screening and Gifted Identification Process: In adherence to PA Regulations for Gifted Education, the Elizabethtown Area School District supports a multiple criteria method for identifying eligible students who may be gifted. Teachers, parents, school counselors, a school psychologist, administrators, and other individuals at the parents’ request are involved in the process. The process includes a review of classroom performance and school records, use of rating scales and parental input, and evaluation by school psychologist and multidisciplinary evaluation. All students in the gifted education program demonstrate a need for specially designed instruction. Parents who suspect that their child is in need of specially designed instruction beyond that required in 22 Pa. School Code Section 4 may request in writing their child be evaluated under the criteria of 22 Pa. School Code Section 16.22.

Before Project Lifesaver came to Lancaster County on Oct. 20, 2012, an elderly man wandered from his home during the winter. Much effort was put into finding him, but he was not located until a day or two later. He had passed away 250 feet behind his home. “If he would have had a working wristband from Project Lifesaver, we more than likely would have found him,” stated Pilot Club of Lancaster member Cathy Cieslinski. “Project Lifesaver is all about bringing your loved ones home, and we saw a need in our county. Implementing this program in our county was important to our club.” Project Lifesaver is a search-andrescue program to locate at-risk individuals who wander. Its mission is to use state-of-the-art technology in assisting those who care for individuals with Alzheimer’s, dementia, autism, developmental disorders, Down syndrome, and other brainrelated challenges across the United States. According to Project Lifesaver’s data, in over 3,400 searches,

Project Lifesaver has achieved a 100% success rate on an average of less than 30 minutes. Pilot Club has partnered with 18 municipalities to bring Project Lifesaver to Lancaster County. Lt. Jennifer Brubaker from East Hempfield Township Police Department was one of the first police officers to receive training. “The equipment took time to work with and feel comfortable using,” said Brubaker. “In a moment where lives are at stake, you don’t want to use equipment that you need to think much about operating. You want to get right to work and get moving with it.” Brubaker said she decided to receive training because she has two autistic goddaughters, so she saw value in the program. Project Lifesaver participants wear a personalized transmitter 24/7 on their wrist or ankle that

for the puzzles, and Emily started promoting the box on Facebook. The project took off. “It was very popular, and soon people wanted books, too, so he built a top part of the box,” Emily said. She noted that all of this was prepandemic, but that her project really blossomed during 2020. “My neighbors tell me that it’s visited frequently,” Emily noted, adding that her Facebook page had more than 500 members at one time. Along with books and puzzles, the Hendersons began adding even more to the box, including board

games, eggs and baked goods. “We have a small farm in Manheim, and we had a few baby chicks, and soon I had more eggs than I knew what to do with,” Emily said. “Then, last summer, one day my husband asked me to make whoopie pies and I did, but with just three of us living here, we didn’t need 30 whoopie pies, so I put them out there as well.” Emily said she’s now baking two or three times a week and adding treats to the box. Her daughter, Reya, began selling homemade jewelry out of the box as well. While the puzzles and books are free, there is a small fee for the eggs, baked goods and jewelry. Emily said the experience of creating a community box has been overwhelmingly positive. “We keep growing with what we’re offering,” she stated. “It’s so neat to see the response of excitement and appreciation for the box.” She works in early childhood education, and she was excited to recently add two bins to the box - one for children’s books and one for books for teens. “Reading is something I encourage for all children, so I love to see that happening,” she said. “Take your child for a walk in some fresh air, pick up a book or a puzzle and then bring it home to enjoy together.” For more information on Emily’s project, search for “The Puzzle Box of Elizabethtown” on Facebook.

Bears Take 2nd in LL Playoffs, Advance in Districts

BY ERIC PYLES

Third time being the charm might work for most but not for the E-town softball team, at least not when it comes to the LampeterStrasburg softball team. With an 11-4 victory in the L-L Championship game on May 20th, the Lady Pioneers are officially responsible for half of Elizabethtown’s six losses on the year. This one does have a bit of déjà vu to it as L-S also topped the Lady Bears back in the 2019 championship game. As for the 2021 title game, Etown appeared to be on their way to a win after a four-run burst in the top of the third broke open a scoreless game. Carli Zerphey led off the frame with a triple and looked to be stranded there after two quick outs. Ava Fair got the scoring started

when she reached on an error that allowed Zerphey to score for a 1-0 lead. Jess Zimmerman (1-2, RBI, run scored) followed with a one-run single before Megan Gray (2-3, 2 RBI, run scored) capped the rally with a two-run shot and a 4-0 lead. Elizabethtown enjoyed that lead for just over an inning before Lampeter-Strasburg began chipping away at the cushion. The Pioneer comeback started with a two-run fourth and continued with another two runs in the fifth. The Lady Bears were unable to counter the Lampeter-Strasburg push, leaving the game knotted at 4-4 until the bottom of the sixth. That is when the Lady Pioneers sent 11 batters to the plate, scoring seven runs on eight hits that put E-town in an 11-4 hole with just three outs to find a way out. Keiva Middleton kept Elizabeth-

garden. “I’ve had some experience with experiential learning, and I want to continue that at Kraybill,” she stated. “I believe in learning through different avenues beyond the four walls of the classroom.” Although Greenleaf said she’s excited about her position, she admits that Smith leaves big shoes to fill. “The challenge for me is to make connections and get to know the people here,” she remarked. “MJ has a wealth of knowledge as far as knowing the students and their families and the outside community. That will be one of my main goals, to build that knowledge base.” Smith said although she’s retiring, she’s not going away, and she will be around to support Greenleaf and the school as needed. Still, she said, she doubts her replacement will require much help, adding, “I know the school is in very, very good hands.”

Smith said her departure is made a little easier by knowing she’s leaving the school to a very capable educator. Janice Greenleaf will be taking the reins as the new principal. “I know Janice very well, and I feel extremely confident to have her come on,” Smith stated.
