Mount Calvary Graduates Urged To Make A Difference BY CATHY MOLITORIS
ulia Martin, the valedictorian of Mount Calvary Christian School in Elizabethtown, said two passages from James 1 can be taken to heart by the Class of 2021. “James 1:2-3 talks about how the testing of your faith produces perseverance,” she told her classmates during the graduation ceremony on June 4 held at the school’s soccer field. She also quoted James 1:22, noting, “James encourages us to be doers of the Word. … Let us be intentional difference makers in this world.” Superintendent Daniel Sheard addressed the graduates, thanking God for the day and for guiding the students through the challenges of the past year. “ We have lived through some pretty difficult days, but we are here,” he said, “and we praise God for that.” Salutatorian Hunter Stewart also spoke. Noting that he was homeschooled through eighth grade, Stewart said he was nervous and worried about what to expect when he came to Mount Calvary. “It became very clear to me very quickly that this school was very different
J
than everything I’d heard about schools before,” he said, adding that he soon realized the teachers cared about him as a person. He also credited his classmates with helping him feel at home, calling them brothers and sisters. Senior Hayden Merrick shared a testiony about how God has impacted his life, bringing him to Mount Calvary. Through his experience at the school, he said he not only had the opportunity to study the Bible in depth, but also built and developed a strong foundation for his faith. Senior Damian Rutt gave an invocation and senior Kamryn Mummau read Scripture. The guest speaker for the ceremony was Roger Peace, president of Word of Life Bible Institute in New York. “From me to you, congratulations,” he told the graduates. “Job well done.” He noted that the school’s theme for the past year was taken from John 15:13, which discusses “greater love.” Urging the graduates to follow the lessons of Jesus, he added, “This world doesn’t need another person who’s focused on himself. … The world needs people who love one another.”

God has had a hand in Emma Musser’s life and most recently in her artwork. The young woman from Mount Joy just completed a mural at Florin Church of the Brethren, 815 Bruce Ave., Mount Joy. The 7-foot-high, 12-foot-wide mural is displayed over the entrance of the church’s Kids Connect ministry in the lobby and depicts Jesus surrounded by children. Musser, a 2020 graduate of Elizabethtown Area High School, is taking a gap year while working at Floral Designs of Mount Joy and serving as state chaplain for FFA.

A group of Elizabethtown College students has been working hard to preserve the history of a property just south of Bainbridge. Through the college’s Center for Community and Civic Engagement (CCCE), four students recently helped to resuscitate the history and historic significance of the Billmeyer quarry property, which is adjacent to the Haldeman Mansion, located in the Locust Grove area at 230 Locust Grove Road. The project was carried out at the request of the Haldeman Mansion Preservation Society (HMPS).

History from pg 1 “For the past several years, HMPS has been contacted by the CCCE, offering us an opportunity to propose projects for their students, faculty and staff to engage and deepen their involvement in service in local contexts,” said Dale Good, a member of the HMPS board of directors. This year’s project was completed by four sophomore engineering students - Lauren Comly, Drew Riley, Ruth Jacob and Ethan Vallone - who teamed with Fay Landis Burke of Elizabethtown to create images of the original 211-acre farmstead and its Haldeman Homestead Mansion, which was demolished to make way for quarrying operations. Working together to create images of a historic property were (from left) Elizabethtown College stu- Framed computer-generated dent Lauren Comly, Haldeman Mansion Preservation images of the farmstead, the mansion facade and mansion Society president Ken Beard, Fay Landis Burke, floor plans were presented to Doris Burke, and students Drew Riley, Ruth Jacob HMPS. hung in the Haldeman Mansion, where the interior is being actively restored. The students created the images from Burke’s memory. When she was a young girl, her family resided on the quarry property, first in a small stone house built prior to 1758 and subsequently in the larger stone Haldeman Homestead Mansion, which had been built in two stages, prior to 1767 and circa 1798. While the quarry property mansion has vanished, the foundations of the small stone house and a barn remain after more than 250 years. The Billmeyer property is currently managed by Lancaster County Solid Waste Management Authority. HMPS is a nonprofit organization with a vision to restore and renovate the Haldeman Mansion and its Locust Grove property for use
as a community gathering place as well as a local history and Native American museum and educational center. The student-led project was a perfect fit for HMPS, Good said. “This project relates directly to our local history museum and educational interests,” he explained. “The Society’s Locust Grove and Lancaster County Solid Waste Management Authority’s Billmeyer properties are, with historic importance, linked through their Native American, Colonial and early American heritages. (The project) has added clarity to the relationship between the Haldeman Homestead Mansion at Billmeyer and the Haldeman Mansion at Locust Grove. ... The students’ computer images help HMPS to visualize and chronicle an important part of northwest Lancaster County’s history.”

One day, the children’s ministry director of Florin Church came into the flower shop and she noticed some of the artwork Musser had created in the store. “She reached out to me and asked if the mural was something I was interested in doing,” Musser recalled, noting that she said yes, but still had some trepidation. “This is my first mural, and I was very nervous. I wasn’t sure how everything was going to work out. I was scared I was going to fall off the scaffolding.” But Musser said she prayed about it and decided to go for it. Her father came with her to set everything up and make sure the scaffolding was safe, and Musser went to work. It took her about a week to complete the mural. Musser, the daughter of Greg and Jodi Musser, has been creating art most of her life. She started out

making custom dog paintings and has expanded her business, Emma’s Custom Art, to include custom signs, calligraphy and more. “Art is something that has always been so natural for me,” she stated. “Sometimes, I step back and look at what I’ve made, and I’m like, ‘Whoa, I’m amazed my hands can do that.’” In the fall, Musser will attend Penn State Harrisburg to major in agricultural science, but she plans to continue making art as well. “I don’t like to put limits on myself,” she said. “I love ag and art both equally, so my goal is to start out in ag and then eventually pursue art as a career.” The mural project at Florin Church of the Brethren helped reinforce for Musser how much passion she has for art, and it also helped raise her confidence in what she can accomplish. “I give all the glory to God for everything I can do with my art,” she stated. “I think it’s so cool that my first big project was a mural in a church, and everything worked out well. I really believe it was a God thing.” For more information on Musser’s artwork, search for “Emma’s Custom Art” on Facebook or Instagram or email her at emmascustom art@gmail.com.

It’s important for us as a church to meet the needs of people both spiritually and physically.” Ruhl’s United Methodist Church holds services on Sundays at 8 and 10:30 a.m. Sunday school is offered for people of all ages, including adults, at 9:15 a.m. The church will hold a vacation Bible school from Monday, July 26, through Friday, July 30.

The biblical story of creation will come to life when Ruhl’s United Methodist Church hosts a drive-through event on Saturday, June 26. The festivities will take place at the church, 4810 Elizabethtown Road, Manheim, from 10 a.m. to noon. Over the past year, the church has held several wellattended drive-through celebrations, said Kris Gray, one of the event organizers. “We did a drive to Bethlehem at Christmas and a drive to Calvary at Easter, and they were so well received, we wanted to do something similar,” she stated. “We were brainstorming ideas, and God laid it on my heart to do a creation event.” Gray declined to give too many details about the stations that will be featured, noting that organizers want to keep an element of surprise. “There will be seven stations, and I will say there aren’t many people involved in the scenes since people weren’t created until day six, so we won’t have a lot of costumed characters like we’ve

Gray just missed hitting for the cycle, instead kicking off her three-hit affair with a second inning triple that led to E-town’s first run.
