Sowing The Seeds Of Service BY CATHY MOLITORIS

Members of Girl Scout Troop 70614 have been working hard to “make the world a better place,” one part of the Girl Scout Law. In May, the Junior troop members beautified the grounds around the amphitheater in Elizabethtown Borough Park, earning their Bronze Award in the process. The Bronze is the highest award that can be earned by Girl Scout Juniors, who are fourth- and fifthgrade students.

The girls started the project by brainstorming ways to help their community. Originally, they planned to fix up areas around the playground in the park. “We were thinking we were going to build bird and bat boxes,” said troop member Ava Livelsberger. “But we started talking to people from the park, and we realized that wasn’t something that solved a problem for someone. We wanted to do a project that solved a problem.” Instead, the girls organized a park cleanup and met with Ken Dyer, Elizabethtown Borough’s parks superintendent, to discuss needs in the park. They decided to replace a strip of grass bordering the amphitheater with a mulched bed of perennials and annuals, adding beauty to the area and making it easier for groundskeepers to mow while preventing damage to the amphitheater from weed whackers. Eric Schubert, talking on the phone with New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy, has been recognized for his genetic genealogy work.

Solving Genetic Mysteries hen Eric Schubert was about 10 years old, his mom gave him a DNA test kit. She thought it would keep her son entertained for a few days, but Schubert had other ideas. Ten years later, the rising junior at Elizabethtown College is still into DNA, and it’s become much more than a hobby. Schubert, 20, uses genetic genealogy to solve crimes, among other applications. “Investigative genetic genealogy is revolutionizing cold cases and crime scenes, but it is still a relatively unknown piece of new technology,” said Schubert. expect to get involved in that work. “I thought, no one is going to come to a 17-year-old and say, ‘Hey, can you help us solve this murder?’” he recalled, “but then it did happen.” The week he graduated from high school, in 2019, The Philadelphia Inquirer published an article about Schubert and his genetics work. Detectives in Montgomery County saw the article and contacted him for help with a criminal case that had grown cold. “It took me about two weeks to solve the case,” he said, noting that he got the case the day before he left for college, but didn’t sit down to work on it until he came home to Medford Lakes, N.J., on a school break.

Northwest Emergency Medical Services (EMS) recently awarded two scholarships to graduating seniors at Manheim Central High School. Audrey Miller and Jenna Wagner were awarded the Robert C. Stirling Scholarship, named in honor of Bob Stirling. Stirling was an active member of the Manheim community, including the Manheim Veterans Memorial Ambulance Association, which merged

genealogical methods to connect biological relationships between people. Locally, the type of work Schubert does has been used to solve cases including the murder of Christy Mirack. Schubert didn’t jump into crime solving immediately. After his initial introduction to genealogy, he started offering traditional services, including helping adoptees locate biological parents or assisting with building family trees. Soon, however, people began asking him to help with more complex DNA puzzles. “I really started mastering genetic genealogy,” he stated, noting that he knew the science was beginning to be used to solve cold cases but that he didn’t

It’s an essential school supply, but for some students, a new backpack isn’t in the budget. That’s where Rainbow’s End Youth Services (REYS) steps in. REYS offers Backpacks to School, providing free backpacks and school supplies to students in grades one through 12. “Any family in need is eligible for a backpack,” said Jeremy Freimark, REYS program director. “We serve primarily Lancaster County, but we also have served families in surrounding areas including York and Harrisburg.” REYS, located at 105 Fairview St., Mount Joy, has been providing the service since 2012 and has given away thousands of backpacks. “We have been able to provide more than 600 backpacks each year, and the majority of them are not repeat families,” Freimark noted. Backpacks are stuffed with school supplies, including notebooks, pocket folders, markers and colored pencils. The registration deadline to receive a backpack is Saturday, July 31. Backpack distribution

will be Monday, Aug. 9, through Friday, Aug. 13. “After families register, they’ll be assigned a time to come in during that week in August to pick up their backpack,” Freimark explained. “We try to make it an individualized experience for the recipients, and the students get to pick out their backpack.” The backpack program helps REYS meet its mission of providing community service, he noted. “REYS is here to support students in three ways: spiritual guidance, academic assistance and social support,” he stated. The backpack program also serves another purpose, he added, as it brings families into the center and introduces them to what REYS offers. Programming at REYS is faith-based and is available for students in grades one through 12. It includes homework help, sports and music programs, meals and more. REYS is always looking for donations of backpacks and supplies, as well as volunteers to pack the backpacks. “For anyone who wants to volunteer, it’s an opportunity for them to walk beside the youth See REYS pg 4

The rollout will place Flashfood at 170 participating Giant and Martin’s stores by fall. The chainwide rollout of Flashfood begins with stores in Bucks, Chester, Delaware, Montgomery and Philadelphia counties, with additional stores joining each month. By downloading the Flashfood app, which is free on iOS and Android, shoppers can browse deals on fresh items that are nearing their bestbefore dates. Purchases are then made directly through

In addition to the Flashfood app, Giant also has recycling and donation programs in place. Last year alone, through Giant’s Meat the Needs program and in partnership with Feeding America, more than five million pounds of safe, consumable fresh food that would have otherwise gone unsold was frozen and donated to regional food bank partners. with Northwest EMS in 2013. The scholarship is awarded to residents of the Manheim Central community who are pursuing a degree in the medical field. Miller will attend Penn State Mont Alto campus in the fall and plans to become a physical therapist assistant. “She stood out to us because of her academic and athletic achievements, both on the school soccer team and on a community league soccer team, as well as her volunteer work in the community,” said Lori Shenk, community outreach manager for Northwest EMS. At school, Miller was a coadviser of the Interact Service Club and a member of the book club, the Spanish Club, the pingpong club and Student Council. She volunteers at the Water Street Mission and at her church, Salem United Methodist Church, where she serves and prepares meals and works in the church library. She also helped to organize

and run the Elementary School Festival. Wagner is pursuing her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Pennsylvania College of Health Sciences. “She stood out to us because during her high school career she dual enrolled in the college in the high school program, allowing her to complete six college credits,” Shenk stated. “Additionally, her application indicated that she has already taken steps to pursue her chosen degree by arranging shadow experiences at Penn Medicine/Lancaster General Hospital ICU and through a mentoring program facilitated by the Lancaster Chamber of Commerce.” In school, Wagner participated in Spanish Club, marching band, jazz band, TriCounty Music Honor Society, Lititz Community Band, quiz bowl and the medical careers club. She also volunteers with her youth group. Northwest EMS is based in Elizabethtown, but has stations in Maytown, Manheim and Brickerville.

Gretna Theatre, has announced its 2021 season. Events will take place at the Mount Gretna Playhouse, Pennsylvania and Carnegie avenues, Mount Gretna. Productions will include “I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change” on Thursday to Sunday, July 15 to 18; “The Hound of the Baskervilles” on Thursday to Sunday, Aug. 5 to 8; and “Dino! An Evening With Dean Martin” on Thursday to Sunday, Aug. 26-29. The Kids Series programs will be held on Saturdays at 11 a.m. The series of one-hour shows will introduce children in kindergarten through sixth grade to live theater. The Kids Series is sensoryfriendly, meaning typical theater conventions have been relaxed to accommodate individuals with autism and other developmental disabilities and the families that support them. The theater never goes completely dark, no startling or strobing lighting effects are used, and attendees are free to change seats or take a break during the shows. The Kids Series will include “Llama Llama Red Pajama” on July 17, “The Very Hungry Caterpillar Show” on Aug. 7. Gretna Theatre will also present “The Summer Club” on Friday, Sept. 3, at 7 p.m. A 17-piece big band will perform Sinatra-style and jazzy Broadway hits. Gretna Theatre has instituted safety procedures in response to the pandemic. These efforts include capacity restrictions, a fresh seating plan, a sanitization regimen before and after each performance, and sanitization stations at the entrances/exits. Efforts behind the scenes include new safety procedures for performers and administration. Tickets for the 2021 season are extremely limited due to the capacity restrictions. For subscriptions and single tickets, call the box office at 717-964-3627. For updates on safety procedures, visit www.gretna theatre.org/safety.

those in senior high. Kiwanis clubs host nearly 150,000 service projects each year, and locally, the NorlancoRheems club serves a monthly meal to the children at Rainbow’s End Youth Services and hosts a day at Hersheypark. It also maintains Old Standby Park on West Main Street, assists in highway cleanup, sponsors Community Safety Day and a bike rodeo and participates in Winterfest and the Cruisin’ Cuisine Car Show. The next upcoming project is a free pancake breakfast to be held in conjunction with the car show on Saturday, July 24. The breakfast will take place from 8:30 to 11 a.m. at First Presbyterian Church, 7 Marietta Ave.

While a church picnic has been a tradition at Ruhl’s United Methodist Church for more than 100 years, the pandemic has caused the congregation to rethink its plans. The church had to cancel its picnic both last year and this year, but church members still wanted to serve the community, so they decided to offer their popular chicken corn soup to go. The soup will be available for pickup on Saturday, July 17, at the church’s picnic grove, 2766 Newport Road, Manheim. Soup will be available from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. or until sold out. “It’s our traditional recipe we’ve used at our church since we started having picnics,” said Gail Ruhl, a member of the picnic committee. “People can bring their own containers, but we’ll also have prepackaged containers of soup in quarts.” Ruhl has been involved in making the soup for decades. “I was taught how to make the rivels, and I’ve done that for the last 30 years,” she stated, adding that her husband and daughters help out, as well. The committee cooks and prepares the chicken on

the Thursday before the sale, and the sale day is a very early morning for the crew. “We start about 5:30 a.m.,” Ruhl explained., and it’s a good thing they do, because people begin lining up early in the morning to get their soup, she noted. It also takes a village to serve soup to the community. “The soup sale is a church effort,” Ruhl remarked. “Many volunteers get together to help and make this happen.” The church members hope to bring back the picnic next year, which typically includes a full day of music, games and fellowship, but they felt the soup sale was a way to ease back into community outreach. “ We wanted to serve our community in a way that everyone would feel comfortable,” Ruhl said. “Lots of people come every year, and we wanted to be there for them.” Proceeds from the soup sale are used to maintain the picnic grove, where the church will hold services on six Sundays in July and August. For more information on the soup sale or church services, call the church at 717-665-3400 or visit www.ruhlschurch.org.

Faith McClellan said she’s proud of how the project turned out. “I wanted to do this project because it’s something good for the community, and it also looks really nice,” she stated. Her fellow troop member Piper Checkeye agreed, adding, “I really liked that we got to help our community, and I really liked planting the hostas because we got to dig bigger and deeper holes.” Brianna Thatcher noted that she had helped her mom plant flowers before, but not to this extent. “This was the most gardening I’ve ever done,” she said. “I liked planting the marigolds the best.” For Eleni Brehm, the project was just another thing she loves about being a Girl Scout. “This was fun to do, but my favorite part of being a Girl Scout is when you knock on someone’s door and they open it and say, ‘Oh, it’s a Girl Scout selling cookies! Let me go get my money!’”

Service from pg 1 To complete the project, the troop obtained donations from River Road Produce, Warburton Nursery and Greenhouses, and J.B. Hostetter & Sons. Ed Ziegler of Ed’s Landscaping Supply met with the girls to discuss plant options and gardening techniques and provided a sod cutter for the girls to use to dig up the grass. The troop members removed the sod, fertilized the soil, planted a variety of plants including marigolds and hostas, and mulched the space. The girls plan to make a summer watering schedule and check on their plantings regularly. For troop member Valerie Hall, the project provided a fun way to give back to the community. “I liked getting to plant the flowers, and I like watering them,” she said. Gwen Hoover said the hardest part was using the sod cutter and removing the sod. “It was hard to lift the rolls of dirt,” she recalled. “They were heavy!”

Since then, he’s been contacted about helping with other crimes and currently has about half a dozen cases he’s working on. At Elizabethtown College, Schubert is majoring in history and political science, and he says he sees genealogy as being more of a side job than a career. “I love doing it, and as long as people are coming to me, as long as there’s a need, I’ll keep at it,” he remarked. “ Whether it’s a genetic genealogy case or a traditional case, I love putting the puzzle pieces together. I consider myself part genealogist, part detective and part therapist, since I started reuniting families when I was 15 years old.” He said he still gets updates from families he helped years ago and loves the difference he’s making. “I like making that impact, reuniting families, solving decades-old cold cases,” he said. “It’s a great feeling to know I’m helping a person or group of people who have been looking for an answer for years, if not decades.” For more information on Schubert and his work, visit www.esgenealogy.com or search for “ESGenealogy” on Facebook.

Mary Mother of the Church will host a bazaar on Saturday, July 17, from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the church, 625 Union School Road, Mount Joy. The event will also feature two community service components - stuff the bus and a food bank collection. This is the first time the church is holding the stuff the bus collection, said bazaar committee co-chair Claudia. “It was brought to our attention at one of our ministry meetings that there are a number of displaced or homeless students in our area, so this is a way to alleviate some of the burden and help our community,” she stated. School supplies for children and youths in grades kindergarten through 12 will be collected, along with sweatshirts, sweatpants and children’s socks. The items will then be dispersed to the Donegal, Elizabethtown, Hempfield and Columbia Borough school districts. The food bank collection is an extension of the church’s ongoing service project within its congregation. Food collected will benefit the Mount Joy Food Bank and the East Donegal

Conoy Christian Food Bank. Everyone who donates three items either to stuff the bus or to the food bank collection will receive three tickets for a basket giveaway drawing at the bazaar. The bazaar will include 30 vendors, offering everything from crafts to art. A Chinese auction will be held, and hundreds of baskets will be featured in a giveaway drawing. Items include restaurant gift cards, trips to local attractions and more. “This is truly a ‘love thy neighbor’ event,” said Claudia, who noted that the church typically holds its bazaar over three days in the fall but had to change plans this year due to the pandemic. “People have given so much to help us. It’s unbelievable how the community has come together.” A continental breakfast will
