Preserving The Past BY CATHY MOLITORIS

Maytown may be tiny, but the town’s past packs a powerful punch. “For a smaller town, we have a tremendous amount of history,” said Bob Lescallette, curator of the Maytown Historical Society’s museum and one of the founders of the historical society. That history dates to May 1, 1760 (or 1762, depending on whom you ask … but that’s a story for another day), and it’s the mission of the Maytown Historical Society to make sure it’s not forgotten.

Brendan Heisey, a member of Boy Scout Troop 117, recently earned his Eagle award.

Solving A Problem In A Park BY CATHY MOLITORIS

alking through Old Trolley Line Park in Mount Joy Township, Brendan Heisey noticed something was missing, so the rising senior at Elizabethtown Area High School took action. He built four benches with bases placed in various locations throughout the park, earning his Eagle award in the process. “I was introduced to the Old Trolley Line Park when I was helping with the Eagle Scout project of my brother, Chad Heisey,” Brendan said. “I saw that the park was still very new and didn’t have any sort of place to sit. It was here that I decided that benches would be a good fit.” Brendan, the son of Anthony and Sandy Heisey, is a member of Troop 117, Elizabethtown, chartered by the United Church of Christ. He completed his Eagle project in December 2020 and was awarded his badge at a Court of Honor in

transportation of materials from one bench site to the other,” he stated. “The benches were spread over the entire walking path, so many loads of dirt and stone had to be brought from the larger pile to the separate areas.” Thankfully, he wasn’t alone in the work. “Eagle projects are not done by just one person,” he remarked. “Scouts, friends and family members all came to my project to help in the construction. I would like to thank them for taking time to support me.” In addition to Boy Scouts, Brendan is active in the band and orchestra at school and enjoys reading and playing drums outside of school. He plans to attend college to study chemistry. Brendan encourages other Boy Scouts to go for the Eagle. “I would tell them that, despite the work they may have to put into it, they will not be disappointed with the results,” he said. “There will always be fellow Scouts and other Eagle Scouts that are willing to give guidance.”

Participating in Boy Scouts has brought opportunities to try new activities and attend summer camp, Brendan said, noting that he wanted to earn his Eagle to hone lifelong leadership skills. “Looking at other older Eagle Scouts, I could see that the values they learned had stuck with them,” he stated. He added that his project was physically demanding but rewarding. “I would say the hardest part was the

Lescallette and some friends started thinking about forming a historical society in the mid 1980s, about the time of Maytown’s 225th birthday. In the beginning, the Maytown Historical Society met at a local church before acquiring the building of its current location, at 4 W. High St., in 2002. “This building dates to about 1760, and it’s one of the original, if not the oldest, structures in town,” explained Gordon Nell, the museum director. Volunteers put in extensive work to update the building, including replacing 75 feet of logs across the façade. Today, the location houses the museum, which features a variety of items from Maytown’s history, as well as an archives area. “Our main problem right now is storage and display space,” Lescallette said, noting that the society hopes to be able to expand at its current location.

Connie Dienner believes in the power of faith. For years, she had thought about expanding Cavod Performing Arts, the nonprofit organization she founded in New Holland 20 years ago. “It had been on my heart for a long time to open a second location,” she stated. “Lots of people would say to me over the years, ‘I wish you were a little closer to Lancaster.’ One day, God opened up the doors for an opportunity for us.” Cavod’s second campus is located in Supply, 280 S. Oak St., Manheim. It will hold an open house on Sunday, Aug. 8, from 3 to 6 p.m. The open house will feature free food, games and prizes, tours of the facility and opportunities to meet the instructors. A ribbon cutting will be held at 4 p.m., and the open house will also showcase live performances. Cavod moved into the Manheim location on July 1. The 1,000-square-foot space required some work to transform it into a performing arts studio, including replacing the existing floor with a dance

floor, hanging new mirrors and installing sound panels. “Our Manheim campus will be a micro-campus,” explained Julie Haney, who will be the artistic director. While the New Holland location of Cavod offers more than 100 classes in music, theater and dance, the Manheim site will start smaller. “We’ll be starting off with dance classes,” Haney said, adding that Cavod will launch a new training program for dancers ages 18 to 25 called Ornate Dance Theatre. Haney noted that the new space helps Cavod fulfill its mission of guiding students to “create with purpose” while also connecting with the community. “It’s a great opportunity to expand into our community and build relationships with more people,” she said. “I’m excited to welcome new students. I’m excited to see kids discover their passion.” Classes will begin at Cavod’s Manheim location on Monday, Aug. 23. For more information, visit https://cavod.org or call 717-354-3355.

Good has also been instrumental in setting up an ongoing display at the Maytown municipal building focused on the historical society to help spread the word about the group. Fundraising for the society and museum includes special events throughout

the year, such as Mayfest, which the group plans to host in May of 2022. The society will also host a speaker series beginning in November and a will hold a picnic for members and prospective members on Tuesday, Sept. 14, at 6 p.m. The museum is open on a flexible schedule, said Skip Nell, president of the society. “We are really available anytime,” he noted. “If someone wants to come by, just call and we can meet you.” Gordon said the society’s mission is not only to preserve history, but also to preserve the very organization created to fulfill that mission. “An awful lot of work, time and effort went into creating the museum and starting the historical society,” he stated. “We want to see both continue.” For more information, search for “Maytown Historical Society” on Facebook.

happening, the volunteers noticed that the road the church faces is used heavily by bicyclists, so they are also installing a bike rest stop next to the schoolhouse. It will feature a bike repair station, a water fountain, seating and a prayer garden. Nissley invites everyone to

ripped out a lowered ceiling and restored it to its original height. The team also installed a handicapped-accessible ramp and restroom, removed the kitchen and installed a kitchenette, added air conditioning and renovated the existing bathroom. A piece of the original slate blackboard will be hung on the wall, several original posts have been used to rebuild the porch and an original cabinet has been restored. The team is also working on rebuilding the bell tower and will install a bell purchased from another schoolhouse. Nissley, who is the public works director for Mount Joy Borough, said the project has been a labor of love, noting that the volunteers partnered with contractors for some of the work but did the majority themselves. “This really did pull us together as a church and gave everybody a chance to work together,” he stated. “I see this place being used for a variety of reasons. I see it being made available to other groups and used as a ministry for our church.” As the renovations were

Although the property has housed Sunday school classes, youth group activities and the Erisman sewing circle, congregants were inspired when fellow church member Tina Snyder suggested that the congregation restore the schoolhouse as a project to bring the church together. Church member Dennis Nissley, whose background includes historic restoration construction work, knew he wanted to help. “It had been a vision of mine for many years to try to do something with the building,” he remarked, noting that his father attended school at the site. Nissley led a team of volunteers that started work in early 2020. Although the pandemic stalled the project a bit, the group has spent most of the past year tearing down drywall, ripping up carpets and rebuilding windows to their original size. Volunteers

County Treasures - Heritage Press Museum BY ANN MEAD ASH

The Heritage Press Museum, 346 N. Queen St., Lancaster, has its roots in the Lancaster Cultural History Museum, once located in the Lancaster Trust Performing Arts Center. Ken Kulakowsky is one of the volunteers at the Heritage Press and a member of the .918 Club, a group dedicated to preserving the art of printing and named for the height of a piece of type. Volunteers from the club man the museum when it is open Thursdays through Saturdays from noon to 4 p.m., Sundays from noon to 3 p.m., and the first and third Fridays of each month

Ken Kulakowsky

from 5 to 9 p.m. More information about the museum may be found at www.918club.org. According to Kulakowsky, in 2004, the cultural museum received a donation of printing equipment, and the organization sought volunteers who had experience with letter presses. An exhibit was set up and ran from April until the end of 2004. In early 2005, more equipment was donated, and the exhibit opened again in April, with the display running until 2009, when a state budget cut forced the museum to close. The printing equipment was not technically part of the museum collection, so the printers sought a new home, eventually landing at Building Character, 342 N. Queen St., Lancaster, where the members print bags for the many crafters who sell items there. Kulakowsky said the volunteers are happy to demonstrate the presses and even allow visitors to print items such as coasters. “We have no canned presentation,” he explained. “We will spend five minutes to five hours (with

visitors).” The museum asks that groups set up an appointment to visit. Among the presses on display is a 1750 common press. “This press was in the Smithsonian for a while,” said Kulakowsky, who added that when the press was found in the basement of a church in Maryland, someone who knew of the club contacted club representatives. A Ben Franklin-era press is on display, and Kulakowsky noted that those studying the American Revolution or the War of 1812 are often interested in learning about that particular piece of equipment. Lancaster holds a littleknown place in American history because of its printing prowess, noted Kulakowsky. “The Articles of Confederation were written and agreed upon in York, but York didn’t have any big printers, so (the Articles were) printed on King Street (in Lancaster),” he explained. The .918 Club is working to complete the Heritage Press Education Center at Thaddeus Stevens School of Technology. The eighth annual Lancaster Printers Fair, which will be held on the 300 block of North Queen Street, Lancaster on Friday and Saturday, Sept. 17 and 18, will benefit the center. A Wayzgoose and Surplus Letterpress Sale will take place at 117 Parkside Ave., Lancaster on Sept. 17 from 5 to 9 p.m.

Kulakowsky explained that a wayzgoose is an event that traditionally involved printing competitions and eating roasted goose. More information about the event may be found at www.lancasterprintersfair.org.

Grilled Street Corn Source: Matthew Eads, Grillseeker Prep time: 10 minutes. Cook time: 30 minutes Serves: 4-6 Ingredients • 1/2 cup mayonnaise • 2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil • 1 tablespoon salt • 1 teaspoon pepper • 4 to 6 ears of corn, husks on • 2 cups grated Cotija cheese • 2 tablespoons fresh cilantro, finely chopped • 1 lime, cut into wedges • Cayenne powder or your favorite barbecue rub Directions 1. Light your grill with coals on one side, and allow temperature to stabilize at 350 degrees. 2. While the grill is preheating, whisk together mayonnaise, extra virgin olive oil, salt and pepper in a bowl. Place mixture in the refrigerator, allowing the flavors to meld together. 3. Once the grill has reached 350 degrees, place corn on the grill on opposite side of coals, leaving the husks on. The husks will steam the corn as it cooks and add to the presentation. Grill for 30 minutes. 4. When the corn is ready, remove from the grill and peel husks back. Be careful when doing so because the steam inside the husks is hot. 5. Coat corn thoroughly with a thin coat of the mayo mixture. 6. Pour Cotija cheese onto a plate, hold corn over plate and spoon cheese onto corn to coat the mayo mixture. 7. To finish, top with a pinch of cayenne pepper or barbecue rub. Garnish with cilantro and fresh lime juice as desired. * This can also be done on a gas grill, but the corn won’t have that distinct charcoal grill flavor.

Hall, Chinese Cultural and Arts Institute founder, president, and dancer-choreographer Chen-Yu Tsuei will present a dance troupe that will perform to traditional Chinese music and drumming. Lancaster dancers Sophie Xiong and Hong Dong will each present a solo work as well as a group piece. Prior to these onstage performances, guests will be invited to enjoy an interactive lesson in fan dance basics in the Lyet Lobby. The work of Hong Dong and other local Asian artists will be featured in the building, and crafting tables will be set up to provide an opportunity for guests of all ages to make paper Chinese lanterns to take home. For more information about this event or the Ware Center, visit www.ArtsMU.com.

According to a 2020 survey conducted by Hearth, Patio & Barbecue Association, the Fourth of July is the No. 1 holiday for backyard grilling in the U.S. Sixty-eight percent of grill owners surveyed said they host a barbecue on that day. The poll also revealed that carnivores rule when it comes to grilling. Eighty-eight percent of those who participated in the survey said they prefer meat, specifically steak, followed by hamburgers, then hot dogs. However, a respectable 50% of respondents said that they liked to grill vegetables. There are strong opinions when it comes to the preferred method of grilling. Whether it’s due to convenience or preference, 61% of grill owners use a gas grill. Some of those gas grillers also use charcoal, as the poll shows, with 49% of grillers using this method. Just 10% use an electric grill. The popularity of smoker grills has increased over the last several years. Much like die-hard charcoal users, smoker grills seem to attract a very loyal customer base. One of my favorite foods to prepare on the grill is corn on the cob - especially street corn. If you go to a fair or farmers market this summer and there’s a vendor selling street corn, my advice it to run - don’t walk - and buy it. You’ll find a recipe that I like to use below. Will you be among the millions of Americans celebrating our independence with a backyard barbecue? We may not see eye-to-eye on the method or type of food we serve, but I think we can all agree that Independence Day should be observed, and if we’re fortunate enough to have family and friends to celebrate with, we are blessed indeed.

The Arts at Millersville’s “We The People” First Friday will present an Asian Culture Celebration with art, crafts, music, and dance on Friday, Aug. 6, at 6:30 p.m. The event is free and open to the public at the Ware Center, 42 N. Prince St., Lancaster. An exhibiti in the Regitz Gallery will feature traditional calligraphy, watercolor paintings by Diana Meng. Meng is a resident master artist at the Chinese Cultural and Arts Institute in Harrisburg. Also, on display from Aug. 6 to Friday, Aug. 27, will be a collection of traditional puppetry art on loan from the Taipei Economic and Cultural Representative Office in the United States in Washington, D.C., and New York City.
