Outside a nonprofit in Elizabethtown, a field of dahlias is raising hope. The flowers are handpicked by volunteers and sold throughout the summer to raise money for Brittany’s Hope. It’s just one way the organization supports its mission of creating lasting change in the lives of orphaned and at-risk children. Brittany’s Hope was named for Brittany Ann O’Connell, who died in a car accident in 1999. Brittany was one of 12 adopted children and three biological children of the Abel family, who created the organization to spotlight vulnerable children around the world. “My parents would travel to other countries and realized there are so many special needs children who are left behind in orphanages,” said Mai-Lynn Sahd, executive director of Brittany’s Hope. “They were essentially being

warehoused, with little caregiving.” Brittany’s Hope specializes in helping special needs children, which Sahd explained could include a child with physical or developmental delays as well as hard-to-place older children or children with siblings who want to be adopted together. Sahd was adopted from Vietnam at age 9 and often accompanied her parents on trips to the country, where she served as an interpreter. “I’ve been involved in the work of Brittany’s Hope since I was 15 years old,” she said, noting that the organization has two pathways of support. Brittany’s Hope works with adoption agencies to provide adoption grants and provides humanitarian aid in Vietnam, Ethiopia and Kenya. “We do amazing work, but of course I am biased,” Sahd stated. “But especially in this past year, when more children have been at risk due to the pandemic and economic downturn, our mission is needed more than ever.” The heartbeat of Brittany’s Hope is its volunteers, Sahd remarked, including the people who cut and sell the dahlias, as well as volunteers who help the organization with other

The Make-A-Wish Philadelphia, Delaware & Susquehanna Valley Mother’s Day Truck Convoy raised over $510,000 this year. The convoy was unable to hold a traditional carnival this year, so driver fundraising had a bigger impact than usual on this total. Over $228,000 of the total raised was raised by 30 fundraising drivers. The top 30 fundraising drivers from this year will lead next year’s Mother’s Day Truck Convoy in the order of their fundraising dollars. The drivers will learn their position at the Convoy Banquet to be held at the Barnstormers game in Lancaster on Sunday, Sept. 26. The top fundraising driver will be
invited to throw out the first pitch of the game. The banquet will be by invitation only to drivers, committee members, and volunteers, but the public will be welcomed to attend the game to cheer on these truck drivers. In addition to the drivers raising funds for Make-AWish this year, Manheim Pennsylvania Auto Auction generated $162,000 for the truck convoy from the sale of a replica 1965 Shelby Daytona Coupe built in-house, as well as the tools used to build the car. “There was resilience, and a lot of our clients have grown.” Rutt went on to tell the story of Marie Ndereyimana, a client in Burundi, East Africa. After Marie’s husband died in 2014, all his property reverted back to his family, as is the custom in that country. Marie was connected to a church that hosts a HOPE International savings group called Mutual Support. Marie joined the group and grew both spiritually and in her business sense. “She was making about 50 cents a day working in fields and gardens,” said Rutt, who noted that Marie was able to save 25 cents a week from her pay, and with a $5 loan from the group she started a small business selling avocados and bananas. Eventually Marie began keeping goats, and she purchased rental properties. W hen Marie learned that members of her deceased husband’s family were in

Rutt noted that the pandemic pushed what he calls the “fragile fringe,” of about 100 million people below the poverty line. “But there were bright spots,” added Rutt.

When Jeff Rutt, founder of HOPE International, an organization that helps create financial solvency in 15 countries through savings and microfinance groups, looks back on the last 18 months, he points out that the organization did something out of the ordinary in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. “We initially (gave) a lot of aid,”
said Rutt, who noted that HOPE spent $1 million to help clients. Rutt praised HOPE CEO Peter Greer for his leadership of the organization through the tumultuous time. “(None of us) knew what we were facing, but there was a lot of prayer, reliance on God, our board, our team, and the indigenous leaders and clients in the world,” he said. To help offset those expenditures, HOPE is looking for

early 18th-century Communion table, and the elements will be served from the church’s antique pewter Communion set. Tea and scones will be served in the fellowship hall immediately following the service. A luncheon will be held at Cameron Estate Inn beginning at 1 p.m. Brian said the congregation uses 1721 as the date of the church’s formation, because there is documented proof of that date. “We use that date, but we know that there were people worshipping here before that time,” she noted. The church grounds were once home to a “witness tree,” where church members met in 1777, when George Washington sent a message asking for men to muster and travel to Philadelphia for the Revolutionary War effort. In 1991,
the tree had to be cut down due to disease, but the congregation used its wood to make offering plates, bowls, bells and more. Acorns from the original tree were also saved to plant a new tree. Brian said the 300th anniversary celebration offers a time for the community to come together and recognize the longevity of the church. “We are welcoming anybody back who has a connection to Donegal Presbyterian Church,” she said, noting that the church has withstood the challenges of life on what was once frontier land through wars and even the most recent pandemic. “It’s amazing that a congregation has survived for 300 years, and it has evolved over those years. The church had to be a vital part of the
community to survive that long, and we are still committed to serving our community today.” Reservations are requested for the church service and may be made by calling the church office between Monday, Sept. 6, and Monday, Sept. 20, at 717-653-1943. Reservations for the luncheon are required by Sunday, Sept. 12. To sign up, email CarlaDouple98@gmail.com or purchase tickets on Sundays after church services.
Southcentral Pennsylvania low-income veterans and their families who are experiencing homelessness or are at risk of becoming homeless will have access to crucial services from local organizations via grants provided by Lebanon VA Medical Center’s (VAMC) Supportive Services for Veteran Families (SSVF)
program, which is authorized by Congress. Five local organizations in nine counties around Lebanon VAMC received grants from the center totaling over $3.1 million. The Lebanon VAMC Health Care for Homeless Veteran staff has already helped to provide services to veteran families this year, such as
eviction prevention, housing security deposits, utility assistance, and hotel placements during the pandemic. A list of grantees is available at www.va.gov/ homeless/ssvf.asp. More than 260 organizations nationwide received SSVF grants. To learn more about the SSVF program, visit the aforementioned website.

On the wall of Donegal Presbyterian Church, a sign bears a Celtic saying. It translates to “one hundred thousand welcomes,” and it perfectly sums up the church’s philosophy, said Portia Brian, who volunteers as the church’s historian. “ We believe in connecting people through faith,” she said. “Churches come and go, but this one has withstood the test of time.” She’s not kidding. Donegal Presbyterian Church, 1891 Donegal Springs Road, Mount Joy, will mark its 300th anniversary on Sunday, Sept. 26, with a homecoming service beginning at 10 a.m. Bagpiper Gustav Person will lead a processional of church dignitaries, and the service will include recorded greetings from the Rev. Stephen Richmond of the Rathneeny, Ireland, church with whom Donegal shares an ancestral heritage. Representatives from the synod and presbytery will participate in the service, and the Rev. Matthew D. Randolph will deliver the sermon. The Rev. Larry Chottiner has written a hymn especially for the 300-year celebration. The Donegal Church choir will provide special music. Communion will be celebrated at the church’s

“When this happened to Linda, it really hit home … being parents and realizing the danger our teenagers are in,” said Jennifer King. She and her husband, Wayne, both members of the Pennsylvania Riding Club, are working with American Bikers on a Mission to organize the Linda Stoltzfoos Commemorative and Abduction Awareness Ride. Stoltzfoos was kidnapped and murdered in 2020. Wayne, who was born into the Plain community, is friends with Sam Blank, a spokesman for the Stoltzfoos family. “I wanted to make sure this was done right,” said Wayne. “A focus of our club is bridging the gap between the biker community and the (Plain) community.” With that goal in mind, Wayne and other members of the club plan to hold the ride on Saturday, Sept. 11. Riders will meet at Ephrata Community Church (ECC), 70 Clay School Road, Ephrata, from 10 to 11:45 a.m. for registration. The ride will leave at noon and follow a route that will take Route 322 east to Farmersville Road to Shirk Road to

This requirement was meant to address the issue of teams adjusting their cablebrake systems after passing the competition’s required brake-strength test. Larry Zavodney, senior professor of mechanical engineering, noted
that Zell had to redesign the front end of the vehicle and make other modifications. In addition to being recognized for this technical innovation at the Shell awards, the supermileage team recently presented a second vehicle at the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) supermileage competition.

The sale will feature fiction and nonfiction books for adults, along with history books, biographies, paperbacks, trade paperbacks and cookbooks. A wide variety of children’s books will also be for sale, along with DVDs and CDs for both children and adults. “People are encouraged to bring their own bags or boxes if they can,” Casper said. “If somebody buys more than they can carry, we will help them get their books to their car.” The sale will accept cash, checks or credit cards, and proceeds will benefit the general operating budget of the library. The book sale is the Friends group’s biggest fundraiser. “The sale is a resource for the community,” Casper commented. “We have good-quality books at excellent, affordable prices. You really get a bang for your buck. This sale is a way for people to buy affordable books in good condition, and a lot of people stock up on books at our sale.” The Friends group has been holding the fall book sale for many years, Casper said, adding
that the sale was originally held on the Elizabethtown Fairgrounds. Volunteers spend all year collecting and sorting book donations to prepare for the sale. “It’s kind of like housework - it’s never done,” Casper stated, with a laugh. “I’m very, very picky when choosing books to put out for the sale. The books are all in good condition. If I wouldn’t buy it, I don’t put it out.” Volunteers are needed to help with the book sale. To sign up, visit https://tinyurl.com/fxec9vj4.

Central Penn College has announced the creation of nine new scholarships that will provide up to $1 million in financial assistance to a total of more than 500 new and current Central Penn College students. These additional scholarships are the result of a donation from the Central Penn College Education Foundation. Students are eligible to apply for and receive more than one scholarship, if they qualify. In recent years, Central Penn College and the college’s Education Foundation have provided more than $1 million annually in tuition assistance to new and current students. In March, the college expanded its Free Housing Scholarship from one year to four years, which could ultimately save students more than $23,000 in residential housing costs. The nine new scholarships build on these previous affordability initiatives. The amounts for all the new scholarships are for the 2021-2022 academic year except where indicated. The 140-Year Scholarship for $1,400, in honor of Central Penn’s 140th anniversary, is exclusively for full-time students. The Medical Assisting (MA) Diploma Healthcare Heroes Award, for $500, is for students in the MA Diploma Program. Applicants for the RN to BSN Excellence in Nursing Scholarship, for up to $15,000,

The Elevate Investing Group and Win This Fight, Stop Human Trafficking Now, delivered a check for $61,057 to North Star Initiative on July 7. human trafficking. The organization’s long-term restoration home, The Harbor, provides survivors with 24/7 care, which includes medical and psychological treatment as well as education and careerbuilding opportunities.
