Hoping to expand that community even more, Charley is organizing the second annual Trellis Marketplace Harvest Festival. The event will be held on Saturday, Oct. 16, in the parking lot of Christ Lutheran Church, next door to Trellis, as well as inside the store. The festival will run from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. “This festival is an opportunity for me to showcase more vendors,” Charley stated. “I have limited space in the store, and I hate saying no to people, so an event like this gives me the chance to work

from breast cancer. Although Charley, who is an artist specializing in watercolor and polymer clay, had helped her mom from time to time, she wasn’t expecting to take over the business. “We had one conversation about the future of this place, and she said, ‘If things don’t get better, what’s going to happen?’ and I told her, ‘I’ve got it,’” Charley recalled. Despite her lack of business experience, she dove headfirst into the shop and has relied on the support of mentors including Susan Zeager, who owns Whippoorwill boutique in Elizabethtown and has a gift shop in the lower level of Trellis Marketplace. “I tell everyone I am growing with this business,” Charley said. “I’m learning as I go, but there is nothing else I would rather be doing.”

The Girl Scout motto is “be prepared.” Girl Scouts Keeli Adams and Mya Brouse took that message to heart when they worked on a project to earn their Bronze Award, the highest award a Junior Girl Scout can earn. Throughout their project, the girls learned to be prepared for the unexpected, whether it was closures and delays due to the pandemic or facing a snowstorm. Keeli and Mya are members of Troop 70417. balanced meals to the emergency shelter on three evenings, including one during a snowstorm,” Tracy noted. The girls held the collection at H.U. Coble House in Elizabethtown. “We would like to thank the Elizabethtown and Mount Joy areas for their contributions to the drive and for supporting these two wonderful, caring ladies,” Tracy said. Keeli is the daughter of Brandon and Brianne Adams. She has been a Girl Scout since she was in first grade, and she is currently a seventh grader at Elizabethtown Area Middle School. “My favorite part about the project was helping organize the homeless shelter,” she stated. “The hardest part was getting it done because COVID affected this project a lot.” In fact, the girls had to file for an extension on their project due to the pandemic. Mya is the daughter of Dennis and Maria Brouse. She is a seventh-grade student at Donegal Junior High School and has been a Girl Scout since she was in kindergarten. “My favorite parts of the project were making food with my friend and knowing that it’s helping people,” she said. Both girls say they love Girl Scouts because they’ve been able to take trips such as sleeping over in an aquarium, camping on the beach and snow tubing. “I like being able to camp, work on projects with friends and doing and learning things I wouldn’t ordinarily do,” Mya said. “I want to advance to the highest level of Girl Scouts and earn my Gold Award, which is equivalent to Boy Scouts’ Eagle Award. It helps on scholarship and job applications because it shows I can be a motivated, independent leader. And I want to help serve my community’s needs.”

When Sam Allen began working at Bube’s Brewery in 1981, he was intrigued by a hole in the ground in the corner of the catacombs under the restaurant at 102 N. Market St., Mount Joy. Fast forward 40 years and Allen, now the owner of the establishment, is finally getting his chance to discover what’s underneath the place. “I’ve always loved caves and exploring,” said Allen, who became the owner just a year after coming to Bube’s. “I promised myself at 23 that during my watch, someday, somehow, I’d make the time to explore what’s down there. I’m 62, and I decided the time is now. I don’t want to wait until I’m 82.” Allen knew there were tunnels running underneath the

19th-century establishment, and in April, he brought in a company called GPRS, which used ground-penetrating radar to take a closer look at what’s underground. Well versed in the history of Mount Joy, Allen noted that the building across the street from Bube’s was the home of Philip Frank, who helped finance the small brewery Alois Bube purchased from him in the 1800s. Legend says that a tunnel leading under the street to the home was used to supply steam from the brewery to heat Frank’s house. The home now houses the Malt Baron’s Mansion, part of Bube’s Brewery’s housing options. Bube’s was also a speakeasy during Prohibition, Allen said, and it’s possible some of the caves under Bube’s Brewery were used to hide slaves who were escaping

Allen works about once a month on the project and said it’s slow going not only because it’s a lot of work, but also because it’s happening right in the middle of the Catacombs, a restaurant where dining events are regularly held. “This is an excavation site during the day and a fine dining room in the evening, so that’s a unique challenge,” he remarked. Allen is working to bring buckets of dirt out of the tunnels, digging a little further with each excavation, and he’s hoping to find an excavating company to help since he’s currently hand-carrying the full buckets up to the street surface two floors above the project. Hay, bedding and vet care are our biggest expenses,” Strickland noted, adding that funds raised are also used to provide craft supplies for indoor activities on rainy days and other expenses. focus on kids who are struggling and pair them with a mentor and then they choose a horse they are drawn to, or sometimes, the horse chooses them,” she stated, adding that the horses - which are all rescues or surrenders - have been known to reach out and munch on the clothing of their chosen child. Participants, who range in age from 7 to 17, come to Hope’s Haven to bond with the horses and go for rides. “We don’t charge anything for the mentorship,” Strickland stated. “We strongly believe in offering this opportunity for healing to any child who needs it.” Strickland named the organization after Hope, the first horse she rescued. She modeled Hope’s Haven after Crystal Peaks Youth Ranch, an Oregon-based organization that provided the training and structure she needed to get her nonprofit up and running. Hope’s Haven was incorporated in 2018. “I felt God calling me to help horses in need and to help kids who were hurting,” she said, noting that both the horses and their human counterparts benefit from the program. It’s been proven that being around horses provides health benefits, from improving mood to lowering heart rates, said Donna Brubaker, a volunteer mentor. She’s seen firsthand how the children who come to Hope’s Haven begin to heal through the course of the sixweek program. “The kids come into the program completely shut down, and by the time they leave, they’re smiling and talking and laughing,” she said. Hope’s Haven has no paid staff. It relies on donations

Lady Bears Go 7-0 in Regular Season Matches

BY ERIC PYLES

‘All they do is win’ might be an overly simplistic way to describe the 2021 Lady Bear volleyball team but that does not mean it isn’t true. Despite midseason chaos in the form of a coaching change, the Lady Bears remain a perfect 70 in regular season matches. In fact, the only stumble came on September 25th where Etown finished second at Cumberland Valley’s ‘Rally in the Valley’ Tournament. The most recent of those regular season wins came on the 28th when E-town topped Garden Spot by a 3-0 count. Three blocks each from Liz Kerin and Anna Mowrer coupled with 14 Sydney Stewart kills and 17 Angela CostaOuimet assists paved the way for 25-10, 25-9 and 25-14 win. Elizabethtown’s trip to the West Shore on the 25th went well until the finals where the Lady Bears fell by a 2-1 count. E-town posted an impressive 10-1 record to earn that title shot opposite Spring Grove, posting wins over Musselman (1-1), WC Rustin (2-0), ACC (2-0), Central Dauphin (2-0), Hempfield (1-0) and Cumberland Valley (2-0). E-town added two more 3-0

victories to their resume, in their final tune ups for the ‘Rally in the Valley’ Tournament, rolling by LampeterStrasburg on the 21st and Solanco on the 23rd. Stewart paced the attack with a combined 21 kills and 13 digs while Costa-Ouimet continued to distribute with 32 assists split evenly between the two matches. Kerin added a total of nine blocks while Hailey Oller chipped in with 16 assists and five aces. Most teams have dreams of running the regular season table and finishing with a perfect record but not many actually accomplish those goals. With a 5-0 win over Warwick on the 29th the Lady Bears put a bowtie on a perfect 13-0 regular season. “It has been a dream season, a historic season,” said head coach Brenda McBride. “The success we’ve achieved this year is built on the backbone of the hard work these amazing girls have put in over multiple years. In the off-season they’ve taken it upon themselves to work hard and practice consistently. The example of grit and determination that these girls have provided for our younger players will help us continue

our goal of becoming a mainstay at the top of the league.” Matching 7-0 sweeps over Donegal on the 24th, Lebanon on the 27th, Solanco on the 28th coupled with the Warwick victory gave the Lady Bears six straight sweeps to close out the season with eight of their 13 wins being the sweep variety. GOLF A trip to Honeybrook Golf Club on September 27th brought an end to the 2021 season for the E-town golf squad. Members Abe MacDerment, Aiden Blyler and Dylan Parise made the trip with Blyler posting the top finish. The sophomore carded a round of 84, finishing T-29th in the 95-person field. MacDerment finished three shots back and in a 41st place tie while Parise posted a round of 97 to finish T-68th beside Maggie Eckroat of Penn Manor. FOOTBALL Two games do not officially make a winning streak but by

slipping by Cedar Crest 13-12 on the 24th, the Bears inched closer to kick starting that streak. Elizabethtown managed the win despite a 318-208 deficit in yardage thanks to two fumble recoveries and two Hayden Haver scores. The sophomore carried only seven times for 26 yards but two of those carries put Haver in the endzone with his two yarder in the fourth giving E-town the win. Logan Lentz added another 26 yards on six carries while Cade Capello led the team with 52 yards on 14 carries. GIRLS’ SOCCER The Lady Bear soccer team was in action twice in the last week, falling in both contests by 2-1 finals. Solanco handed out the first of those losses on the 23rd while LampeterStrasburg dished out the other in overtime on the 27th. The result is a 2-3 mark in Section Two action and a 27 overall record. Keegan Miller tallied 17 total saves with 12 coming against the

Lady Pioneers. Jessica Gilbert (L-S) and Jena Witters (Solanco) scored the two goals with Taryn Hummer setting up Gilbert and Olivia Shenk helping out Witters. BOYS’ SOCCER The boys’ soccer team saw half as much action with only a September 27th contest opposite Lampeter-Strasburg on the slate. The final there was also 2-1 only with Elizabethtown coming out on top thanks to Wyatt Rachel’s game winner that came with 99 seconds remaining in regulation. Hayden Flory picked up the first E-town score off a set piece while Dominic Santana turned away five shots to secure the win. “L-S is an excellent team,” said head coach James Sostack. “Tonight, we prevailed, and our young team learned that the second half of the season is going to take both mental focus and lots of heart.” FIELD HOCKEY The field hockey team also had a light stretch with just one game on the docket. That game was a September 27th clash with Donegal that went to the Lady Indians, 2-1. Mikaela Condran, with help from Hailey Mertz, knotted the game at one in the second quarter but Emma Miller netted her second goal of the game on a corner as time expired to give Donegal the win. Alaina Telenko finished with four saves. CROSS COUNTRY The cross-country teams traveled to Carlisle on Saturday the 25th, competing in

the Challenge race at the Carlisle Invitational. Jordan DiRisio brought back the top finish, taking 73rd in the girl’s race. Ali Fink just missed the top 100, settling for 103rd while Julia McAlonis (149th), Lilah Drager (153rd) and Jillian Wivell (154th) rounded out the Lady Bear top five. Nathan Johnson claimed the top spot for Elizabethtown, finishing 176th in the boy’s challenge race. It’s a piece of history, and I wanted to capture that,” said Post, a professional photographer who learned of the excavation project after coming to Bube’s Brewery for photo shoots. Allen said his inspiration for doing the dig can be summed up in two words: “pure curiosity.” He isn’t sure what he’ll find as he continues to explore, but he’s happy to be making his mark on Mount Joy history. “We take our role at Bube’s seriously as a destination in Mount Joy,” he stated. “Being a good steward of this property and its history is some- Bube’s Brewery owner Sam Allen carries dirt he’s excavated thing I’m very interested in.” up from the tunnels beneath the brewery.
