millennium. It takes the viewer from the 1700s trading post in the Colonial frontier through changes in the 1800s and 1900s to the year 2000. The other mural, “Donegal to Donegal,” traces the migration of the Scots-Irish culture to this area, Landis explained. It was created in 2002 and features maps of the Donegal area of southcentral Pennsylvania and the Ulster area that spans present-day Northern Ireland and part of the Irish Republic. The Irish map features place names that will sound familiar to Elizabethtown locals, since many places in their area were named after the Scots-Irish immigrants’ hometowns. Both murals feature QR codes that viewers can scan to learn more about what’s pictured. See Murals pg 5

Gearing Up For Fall Fun BY CATHY MOLITORIS
For years, GEARS in Elizabethtown has held a festival to celebrate the autumn season and provide fun for the community. Last year’s event was canceled due to the pandemic, but now the 11th annual Fall Festival will be held on Saturday, Oct. 23, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Elizabethtown Fairgrounds, 900 E. High St. “We’re going to have something for all age ranges, from children to adults and seniors,” said Lee Eckert, program coordinator for GEARS.

Saving Elizabethtown’s Murals Nancy Landis and the staff of the Winters Heritage House Museum want to be sure Elizabethtown’s past does not fade away. The museum is spearheading a campaign to restore two large murals in town, located in parking lots along South Market Street and East High Street. “We don’t own the murals, but we’ve gotten permission from the building owners to restore the murals,” Landis noted. “These are part of our community history, and it’s important that we preserve them.” Both murals were painted by Wayne Fettro. “Four Centuries of Elizabethtown History” was created in 2000 in celebration of the new
alking through the halls of Willow Valley Lakes, Candace O’Donnell gets some strange looks. Her fellow residents do a double take because O’Donnell is dressed like Queen Victoria, complete with a purple gown, white wig and crown. “We are not amused,” O’Donnell remarks in a British accent. Then she breaks character. She explains that she’s dressed this way for a photo shoot because she will be portraying Queen Victoria in an upcoming performance. On Monday, Oct. 25, O’Donnell will present “Bringing the Ladies to Life - Queen Victoria, Mary Todd Lincoln and Sarah Bernhardt” at the Elizabeth Hughes Society meeting. The show is open to the public and will be held at St. Paul’s Methodist Church, 398 N. Locust St., Elizabethtown, beginning at 7:30 p.m. O’Donnell, a retired Elizabethtown College English professor, has been performing one-woman shows for years. She’s played on stage at the Fulton Theatre, Ephrata Performing Arts Center and other venues. In March, she’ll present her newest work, “Victoria’s Secrets,” performing as Queen Victoria, at the Ware Center in Lancaster. For her performance at the Elizabeth Hughes Society meeting, she’ll offer a taste of what audiences might see in her full-length shows, portraying each woman for about 10 minutes. O’Donnell, 79, said she loves what she does, adding that she does all the research and writing for her shows. “I look for the crazy. What makes this person unusual?” she stated. “I also try to find something surprising that people don’t know about this person.” For Queen Victoria, for example, she emphasizes that although the royal had a reputation for being uptight and prudish, she was anything but. “She was obsessed with Albert,” O’Donnell explained, adding that she was first smitten by her future husband when she spotted

Showcasing Maytown’s History And Haunts BY CATHY MOLITORIS
WE SELL & SERVICE NAME BRAND APPLIANCES FROM:
“This is a town steeped in history,” said Bob Lescallette, an unofficial historian of Maytown. “Maytown is the oldest town in northwest Lancaster County, and there is a significant amount of history here.” Lescallette will put some of that history in the spotlight or, rather, in the lanternlight during the Maytown Hauntings Tour. The tour will run on Friday and Saturday, Oct. 22 and 23, from 7 to 9 p.m. Tours will begin and end at the Maytown Historical Society Museum, 4 W. High St. Dressed in 18th-century garb, Lescallette will take tourgoers to locations throughout
Maytown, including a number of graves in two historic cemeteries. “Along the route, I’ll be talking about the local sites and some of the more macabre history of Maytown,” he stated, describing the tour as a mix of true stories and legends based in truth. Lescallette, who was the pastor of St. John’s Lutheran Church for 40 years, is a founding member of the Maytown Historical Society. He has researched the information in the tour and enjoys sharing his love of history with the community. “This tour has more of a historical tone than a ghostly one,” he said, “but it can be a little eerie.”

Bob Lescallette invites you into the cemetery for a lantern tour - if you dare.
This is the second year that Lescallette is leading the tour, which began in 2019 but had to be canceled last year due to the pandemic. “Our initial year was so well received, we had to turn people away,” he recalled. “I think the appeal of a tour like this is a combination of people who want to learn more about the history of the town and people who want to maybe see things that are a little bit creepy.” Tourgoers are encouraged to wear comfortable shoes and dress for the weather. Refreshments will be served at the museum at the tour’s end. Admission to the tour is by
donation, and proceeds will benefit the Maytown Historical Society, which strives to promote and preserve the town’s past. Proceeds will be used for acquisitions to the museum’s collection, for guest speakers and for upkeep of the building and grounds. Fundraising is especially important this year, Lescallette noted, since the major events the society holds to raise money were canceled due to COVID. The society is planning to hold its annual Mayfest on Saturday, May 7, 2022. Reservations are required for the lantern tour and may be made by calling 717-725-2437.

Geyers United Methodist Church (UMC), 1605 S. Geyers Church Road, Middletown, invites the community to its annual Trunk or Treat on Wednesday, Oct. 20, at 6:30 p.m. Children and youths from toddlers through middle school are invited to dress in costume and bring a bag along to collect treats. A Trunk or Treat will be held in the church’s upper parking lot. More than 25 cars with decorated trunks are expected to be on-site, and the children may visit them to receive candy or a small toy. Members of Boy Scout Troop 97 will continue an annual tradition by dressing up and decorating their trailer. Londonderry Fire Company and the ambulance crew will once again be on hand with fire trucks as well as a decorated ambulance. The Londonderry Fire Police will assist with parking and pedestrian safety. The children and their families will be given a to-go meal
him wearing tight white riding pants. “Everything she did was to impress him.” For her Sarah Bernhardt performance, O’Donnell focuses on the “femme fatale” aspect of the 19th-century French actress. “Sarah was an age defier,” she stated. “She lied about her age constantly.” O’Donnell said the actress was a fierce woman who continued to perform for a decade even after injuring her leg and having it amputated. Although O’Donnell works hard to portray the humor of each woman, playing Mary Todd Lincoln makes this more difficult, she said. “She was an emotionally fragile person with unspeakable tragedy in her life,” she commented, noting that Mary experienced increasing mental illness later in life. However, O’Donnell does find some funny moments in Mary’s interactions with her husband and in her reputation for being a shopaholic. Being in the spotlight comes naturally to O’Donnell, who added, “I’ve been a ham all my life.” The mother of four and grandmother of eight said she loves performing not just because she’s in front of an audience, but also because her shows give her the chance to showcase incredible women from history. “I want to bring these women to life,” she stated. “I want to understand, to the best of my ability, what makes them tick. I don’t want these to be caricatures. These women are compelling to me. I fall in love with them despite their faults, sometimes because of their faults.” Tickets are not required for the Elizabeth Hughes Society performance. “We’ll have multiple inflatables and bounce houses for the kids and live music for the adults to enjoy.” Additional activities will include pumpkin painting, a soccer kick and a pumpkin miniature golf course. “Students from Elizabethtown Area Middle School will be running yard games for kids,” Eckert noted. “We’ll also have hayrides and barrel train rides.” The Elizabethtown Fire Department will be on site with several fire trucks, and a variety of vendors will sell food and crafts. Students from the Mini-THON club at Elizabethtown Area Middle School and High School will volunteer during the event. The Elizabethtown College wrestling team will run a haunted barn attraction, and the college’s Activity Fun Fair will feature a wide range of activities as well. “The theme of the fun fair is ‘Blooming Into the Streets,’” said Karen Eberly, senior program coordinator for GEARS. “The students do the fun fair as a way of giving back to the public and providing community service, and for the past several years, we’ve combined our Fall Festival with their event and done them together.” Food options at the festival
will include Auntie Anne’s pretzels, Savory’s Pumpkin Funnel Cakes and the What’s For Supper food truck. “The Elizabethtown Area Senior Center will also be selling traditional concession stand food like hamburgers,” Eckert stated. Eberly remarked that the event has evolved over the years from its original concept as a walk-through haunted attraction in a local park to a haunted fairgrounds before becoming the Fall Festival. “It got to the point where what we were doing was almost too scary,” she explained. “We decided to change it up and make it a more family-friendly event.” She emphasized her appreciation for the event’s sponsor, T-Mobile, as well as the Elizabethtown Area School District for allowing use of the fairgrounds. “The Fall Festival is a really fun day,” she said. “ We’re going to have tons of activities and something for everyone’s budget. You can participate in the events that have a fee, or you can come and not spend a dollar.” For more information on the Fall Festival, visit www.getintogears.org or call 717-367-0355.

Landis said restoring the murals is part of the museum’s Property Preservation Campaign, which includes restoration work on the museum’s 18th-century buildings. “We just replaced our roof, and now we need to replace the siding on our east side. It’s just rotted through,” she explained. “The last rain we got from Hurricane Ida came through the wall.” The museum has set a goal of $100,000 for the campaign, with $20,000 earmarked for the mural restoration. Landis emphasized that although the museum is leading the charge for the mural restoration, it is more of a community project than a museum project, and community support is needed. “There are places where the paint is peeling and will need to be scraped off,” she explained. “Everything will need to be reprimed and repainted, and we’re going to try to match the color as best as possible.” The “Four Centuries” mural is black and white, which makes matching a little easier, she noted, but “Donegal to Donegal” is trickier. “The one on our lot used to be vibrantly colored blues, reds and yellows, and now it’s just really faded,” she stated. Landis noted that the museum has a benefactor who has offered to match dollar for
dollar any donations made to the campaign throughout the month of October. She hopes to begin the mural restoration project by next spring or early summer. The public will be able to enjoy the murals as part of the upcoming Haunted Elizabethtown Hunt, happening on Friday and Saturday, Oct. 29 and 30. “This will be a walking tour through town, including going to the murals and visiting some downtown businesses and restaurants,” Landis commented. “You’ll be able to learn about the places in town as well as hear some spooky stories that may or may not be true.” For more information on the mural restoration project or the Property Preservation Campaign, visit www.elizabethtown history.org or call the museum at 717-367-4672.

Through a state grant, Donegal Substance Abuse Alliance (DSAA) is helping people in recovery build wealth. This isn’t monetary wealth, but rather a wealth of resources and support they need to succeed in their recovery journey. “We’re looking at the entire package people in recovery need, whether that’s finding a job or a place to live or rebuilding their relationship with their family,” said Stacy Emminger, executive director of DSAA. “This is called ‘recovery capital,’ and the more stable your recovery capital is, the better your odds of staying in recovery.” The Recovery Capital Program (Re-Cap) is accepting applicants age 18 and older to

participate in the program. Although DSAA’s grant is for a two-year pilot program, ReCap participants will commit to the program for one year.
During that time, they will work one-on-one with a recovery coach and will have access to certified recovery specialists as well as computer software

designed to connect them to community resources, collect data and monitor progress, Emminger said. “People who are new in recovery, oftentimes they have a bunch of barriers facing them. They might be on probation. They might need to find a job or a place to live,” she explained. “All of these can be barriers to a successful recovery.” DSAA is the first agency in the state to use the Re-Cap software, Emminger said, adding, “All of this is clientdriven, and it’s very individualized, depending on what the client needs.” Over the course of the year, the client initially will meet at least weekly with the coach, but frequency will decrease as recovery stabilizes. “The coach is always available for a text or phone call or a meeting at any time during the year,” Emminger emphasized. The goal at the end of the year is for the client to be self-sufficient in his or her recovery efforts. While the grant will fund the recovery coach, Emminger will head up the family component of Re-Cap. “People who are in recovery have often burned a lot of bridges with their family, and they aren’t sure how to make amends or how to rebuild those relationships,” she said. “I’ll help families assess their needs. I’ll provide addiction education and help guide them in how they can best support their loved one.” Emminger noted that participation in Re-Cap is completely free. “One of the reasons we applied for this grant is because typically in recovery, people have to pay out of pocket for care or they have to use the program attached to a specific facility, which can be very limiting,” she stated. “Our coach will work with the person regardless of where they are in their recovery or what recovery path they are taking.” DSAA is one of just a handful of agencies to be awarded a grant from the Pennsylvania Commission on Crime and Delinquency, and Emminger is hopeful that once the pilot program is wrapping up, she will be able to apply to fund a second recovery coach. To apply for Re-Cap, visit www.dsasquared.org and fill out a contact form, call the office at 717-492-4596 or send a message through DSAA’s Facebook page.

Spooky season is upon us, and what better way to celebrate than with a Halloween Tour? Create Columbia will host the tour of nine locations throughout Columbia on Sunday, Oct. 31, from 3 to 8 p.m. Tickets will be available on the day of the event at the Columbia Market House, 15 S. Third St., from 2:30 to 6 p.m. “This is a self-guided tour,” said Denise Brubaker, who is organizing the event with Kay Leader. “The tickets will include a brochure with the addresses and summaries of each place.” Leader suggests that tourgoers begin their tour in the dungeons below the market house, noting that two people will be in the dungeons to give tours of the historic site. From there, the tour will feature a mix of private homes and other locations. “We are hoping to do this tour year after year,” she said of the first-year event. The idea for the Halloween Tour came up at a meeting for
members of Create Columbia, a group dedicated to promoting the arts in the town. “It was actually my idea,” said Denise. “I thought, ‘Lots of towns do Christmas tours. Why don’t we do a Halloween tour?’” Denise and her husband, Gary, are the perfect couple to host a spot on the tour. “I have a room downstairs in my house that’s decorated for Halloween year-round, and it’s been that way for 15 years,” Denise said. While Denise came up with the idea for the tour, Gary is the bigger Halloween fan in the family. He collects Halloween decorations, which are displayed throughout the Brubakers’ house. “It reminds me of the 1950s when I was growing up,” Gary explained, adding that many of the items in his collection came from his mother and others have been picked up at auctions or sales over the years. Stops on the tour will feature a wide variety of Halloween décor, and tour hosts will appear in costume or Halloween-themed outfits. “We’re including things that would
appeal to many people,” said Leader, who noted that her style is “primitive Halloween.” “Some of the décor will be more country, some is a little scarier, but nothing too scary.” She added that Create Columbia will also host a Ghost Signs lecture at Garth, 22 S. Second St., on Saturday, Oct. 30, from 2 to 4 p.m. MaryAlice Bitts-Jackson will show examples and discuss the historic significance of “ghost signs” or faded signs painted on buildings
throughout the world as well as those found in Columbia. The Halloween Tour is a fundraiser for Create Columbia, and proceeds will help the group continue to promote the arts and raise funds for scholarships for local students. “Kay and I grew up in this community, and we love Columbia,” Denise said. “We’re always looking for ways to promote this town.” For more information on the Halloween Tour, search for “Create Columbia” on Facebook.

Bears’ Racket Club Competes in L-L Playoffs
BY ERIC PYLES
Losing in sports is never the desired outcome and when that loss occurs in the postseason, everything is amplified. Add in a spoiled perfect season to that point and you find yourself in the shoes of the Elizabethtown girls tennis team. The Lady Bears rolled through the regular season with a 13-0 mark then moved to 14-0 courtesy of a win over Lancaster Country Day in the opening round of the L-L playoffs. What came next was that first setback, a 3-0 semifinal loss to Manheim Township on October 4th. Township secured the win by claiming all three matches that finished, two in singles and one in doubles, while the two ongoing matches were halted because, with the Lady Streaks up 3-0, the team outcome had been decided. “Toppling Manheim Township presents the toughest test in our district,” said head coach Brenda McBride. “Many of their girls have grown up on the courts and have such sound fundamentals. We came up short this time, but we were competitive in the matches where we knew we had a real chance, with individual flights and team districts approaching, there is much left for us to do.” The going was more E-town friendly in the Lady Bears opening round shutout victory over Lancaster Country Day on the 30th. “Coming away with a 5-0 victory over LCD was a GREAT win for us,” said McBride. “Our girls showed remarkable mental toughness against a very talented team.” Alli Evans, Rylee Bender and Julia Anderson posted singles wins while Nizaly Ortiz-Kreiner and Allison
Lowell as well as Kathryn Barraclough and Julia Laszakovits posted doubles wins. VOLLEYBALL The winning continued on the volleyball court where the Lady Bears moved to 10-0 with wins over Manheim Central, South Western and Cocalico. Two of those wins were the 3-0 variety with South Western managing to steal the opening set, 25-17, before E-town rebounded with wins of 25-15, 25-17 and 25-23 for the 3-1 final. Sydney Stewart (15 digs, four aces) and Kallee Locker (19 kills) led the way with help from Angela Costa-Ouimet (21 assists). The same trio fronted the sweep over Cocalico on the 5th leading to wins of 25-11, 25-7 and 25-11. While Stewart and Costa-Ouimet took center stage against Central to help secure the 25-12, 257, 25-19 win. Stewart totaled 17 kills, 12 aces and 16 digs in the two matches while CostaOuimet finished with 34 combined assists and Locker 12 kills against Cocalico. GIRLS’ SOCCER The girls’ soccer team is in a one step forward, two steps back dance after topping Garden Spot before falling to Penn Manor and Ephrata, leaving the Lady Bears 3-10 on the season. Elizabethtown did manage to close out September on a high note with a 3-1 win over Garden Spot. The Lady Bears unloaded 29 shots leading to first half goals by Josie Spayd, Adyson Haak and Meiley Shuck. Keegan Miller’s five saves were enough to secure the win. Three days later the Lady Bears opened October with a 1-0 loss to Penn Manor. Miller finished with 13 saves but one shot from Lauren Stoner in the 47th minute

E-town’s Allison Evans handled Lancaster Country Day’s Maggie E-town’s Corbin Robinson mixes it up with Conestoga Valley’s Auman in straight sets, 6-4, 6-1, at number one singles to help Aiden Johnson along the line of scrimmage in the Bears’ 35-21, the Bears to a 5-0 victory in a L-L League first-round playoff Section Two loss to the visiting Buckskins on October 1. match in E-town on September 30.
made the difference. One day of rest was not enough for E-town to outlast Ephrata, falling by a 2-1 final in overtime. Haak put the visiting Lady Bears up early with an unassisted goal but a late score in regulation coupled with Cara Tiesi’s game winner in OT sent E-town home with a loss. Miller finished with six saves. BOYS’ SOCCER The boys’ soccer team also faced the Garden Spot-Penn Manor-Ephrata trio, going 02-1 to sit at 6-4-2 on the year. The Bears slipped a 0-0 tie with Penn Manor between a pair of 1-0 losses. Dominic Santana totaled 11 saves over the three affairs, but the Etown attack was held in check leading three games of scoreless soccer. CROSS COUNTRY Elizabethtown cross county was unable to enjoy their home meet with Manheim Township and Warwick on October 5th thanks to an 0-4 day. Jordan DiRisio posted the top finish for the Lady Bears, taking fourth, while Ali Fink slipped inside the top 10. Nathan Johnson posted the top finish for the Bears,
taking 14th. Dalton Fink (17th) and Jaycen Conrad (18th) gave E-town two more in the top 20. FIELD HOCKEY A recent run by the field hockey team is most likely too late to allow the Lady Bears to slip into the 2021 postseason but is still a welcome sight. Etown’s 3-1 stretch improved their overall mark to 6-7-2, putting the Lady Bears just outside the District 3-2A field with only a handful of games remaining. E-town kicked off their run on the 29th with their second OT win of the season, a 4-3 final over Lampeter-Strasburg. Regan Flory (2g) and Mikaela Condran (1g, 2a) paced the offense with help from Hailey Mertz (1g) and Lyla Fair (1a). Alaina Telenko stopped five shots to secure the win. The Lady Bears made it two wins in two days with a 3-1 victory over Cedar Crest. Flory and Condran hooked up for the opening score with Piper Patrick finishing things off with one goal and one assist. Telenko needed just three saves for the win. October opened with a 1-0

loss to Manheim Central with Telenko’s 10 saves not enough to outlast Central. Etown returned to the winner’s circle on the 4th, topping Cocalico 4-2. Condran participated in all four scores, assisting on three while scoring one. Two of those assists went to Flory with Caitlin Steffie corralling the final setup. Telenko finished with four saves. FOOTBALL The football team fell to Conestoga Valley 35-21 on October 1st, snapping a two-game run while dropping the Bears to 3-3
on the season. E-town picked up 264 of their 326 yards through the air thanks to Josh Rudy’s 25 completions. Braden Cummings hauled in Rudy’s lone TD strike, an 11-yarder in the second quarter that made it 21-7. The Bear’s final two scores came on the ground with Logan Lentz (7-22) scoring from 17-yards out while Hayden Haver (2-4) covered two yards for his score. Cade Capello led the ground attack (11-30) while Patrick Gilhool (9-86) and Brady Breault (7-45) completed the air attack.

Comfort Food For A Cause BY CATHY MOLITORIS
ANDREW J. HOMICK Andrew J. Homick, 37, of Elizabethtown, PA, was peacefully received into heaven by God on Monday morning, September 27, 2021 at ProMedica Skilled Nursing and Rehabilitation (formerly ManorCare) in Lancaster following a lengthy illness. Born in Lancaster, he was the son of Paul D. and Lynn Smith Homick of Elizabethtown. Andy attended Elizabethtown Brethren in Christ Church his entire lifetime, and was a volunteer at Cornerstone Ministries in Elizabethtown for several years. He was a 2002 graduate of Elizabethtown High School. Many will remember Andy with his outgoing personality, working as a produce assistant at the former Darrenkamp’s Market in Elizabethtown where he was employed for over five years. Others will recall him as a culinary assistant at Masonic Village. In his spare time, he mastered all video game systems from Nintendo Gameboy to PlayStation. He enjoyed tinkering around with all sorts of gadgets, and supporting the Philadelphia Eagles. It was while he was working at Darrenkamp’s, Andy accepted an offer to join a coworker to go for a run. Following that positive experience, Andy developed an insatiable passion for running. He competed in 5K races in Lancaster, Dauphin, and Lebanon counties. He was also driven to compete in half marathons in both Philadelphia and Hershey. It was physically and emotionally difficult for Andy when his health prevented him from running any longer. Andy was an amazing young man who will be missed greatly by many. He will be remembered as a loving son, a devoted brother, a fun-loving uncle and nephew, and great friend. He was positive and determined, with a wonderful sense of humor. Andy enjoyed making people smile. In addition to his parents, he is survived by a sister, Emily A., wife of Adam Greiner, of Elizabethtown and their children Abriella and Carson. Also surviving is an uncle, Mark, husband of Connie Myers, of Bainbridge, and an aunt, Patti Uhrich of Hershey; and two cousins, Abbey Campbell and Courtney Myers. A Celebration of Life Service will be held on Saturday afternoon, October 16, 2021 at 1:00 PM at Elizabethtown Brethren in Christ Church, 996 E. High St., Elizabethtown, PA. There will be no public viewing. The family will greet guests during a time of light refreshments at the church immediately following the service. In light of the pandemic, honor Andy and his family by wearing a mask. In lieu of flowers, if desired, contributions may be made in his memory to Cornerstone Community Ministries, 95 S. Wilson Ave., Elizabethtown, PA 17022. Ruhl said the potpie dinner provides the church not only with an opportunity to serve good food, but also with the chance to connect with the community. “We make really great potpie,” she stated. “Just come and enjoy the food, visit with friends and family, socialize and enjoy the fellowship. You can talk to people at our church about the church or inquire about our mission trips. It’s a very family-oriented dinner. We love when families come and bring their kiddos. It’s a nice, relaxing atmosphere.” For more information on the dinner, visit https://ruhlschurch .org or call the church at 717665-3400. is “Unfortunate Events.” “One of the stops will be the dungeons below the Columbia Market House,” said Rebecca Wright, who co-owns Rivertown Theatre Productions with Sara Mimnall. While the market has been beautifully renovated, the dungeons have not been touched since they were used to house inmates many years ago. “They are historically accurate, right down to the chains used to hold prisoners,” Wright noted, adding that they make the perfect creepy setting for a tour stop. Additional stops will include the old Becker’s Chip Factory, as well as Art Printing Company, located in the historic Miller Mansion, where Rivertown Theatre Productions has its home base. “The Becker’s Chip Factory is a brand-new, never-before-seen stop on our tour,” Wright noted, adding that it will be transformed into Black’s Hotel for the event. Tourgoers will also be
able to ride the Rivertowne Trolley for part of the tour. This is the fifth year for the Haunted Lantern Tour, and Mimnall said it’s a unique event. “One of the things that sets us apart is that we talk as if the events are happening here and now,” she explained. “Our actors are portraying that person during the event. We want to make people feel as if they are there in the story.” Proceeds from the tour will benefit local organizations, including the upkeep of the Miller Mansion. Wright and Mimnall said they hope attendees will leave with a deeper understanding of Columbia’s rich past. “The tour is equally historical and theatrical,” Mimnall explained. “It’s mostly on the historical side, with some subtle jump scares, but nothing too scary.” Reservations are recommended for the tour, although walk-ins will be accepted if space allows. To reserve tickets, call Holly at 717-587-5368.
Gifting Event Planned The “Buy Nothing Elizabethtown/Bainbridge, PA” Facebook group will hold its second Great Give Event in the parking lot of Elizabethtown Church of the Brethren, 777 S. Mount Joy St., Elizabethtown, on Saturday, Oct. 23, from 7 a.m. to noon. All residents of the local area are welcome to attend. Community members are invited to bring items to give away, as well as to browse and take items. People may display gifts in their trunk or on tables and picnic blankets. Attendees are not required to bring items in order to take items. Organizers recommend that anyone giving from a car put a sheet over anything in the car’s trunk that they do not intend to gift. Masks are optional, though highly recommended if the participant is not vaccinated. Attendees are responsible for removing anything that
they bring to the event that is not gifted. Participants may make arrangements with a neighbor to take their belongings along with their own. To sign up for a spot to offer items, contact Deborah Santiago by texting or calling 717917-4378 or by emailing djs4818@comcast.net. The “Buy Nothing Elizabethtown/Bainbridge, PA” Facebook group is a part of the international Buy Nothing Project, whose mission statement reads, “We offer people a way to give and receive, share, lend, and express gratitude through a worldwide network of hyperlocal gift economies in which the true wealth is the web of connections formed between people who are real-life neighbors.” Community members may search for their local gift economy group at www.buy nothingproject.org.
