Going Green At The Library BY CATHY MOLITORIS

Getting ready to open the ECHOS emergency shelter are (from left) shelter coordinator Chrissie Raffensperger, executive director Brie Anderson and volunteer coordinator Theresa Schlaybach.

ECHOS Will Open Expanded Emergency Shelter ith the opening of its new space at 105 E. Washington St., Elizabethtown Community Housing and Outreach Services (ECHOS) can continue to serve the community as it prepares to open its emergency shelter in December. “Our new shelter is three to four times bigger than our old one,” said Brie Anderson, executive director. “We now have 6,800 square feet.” The larger space has been made possible by the United Churches Elizabethtown Area, which owns the building.

The shelter can now accommodate up to 30 individuals in a communal room, along with three dedicated family rooms. “A lot of shelters separate people by gender, but we believe in keeping the family together,” explained Chrissie Raffensperger, shelter coordinator, adding that single fathers, for example, will be able to stay with their children at the ECHOS shelter. It’s just one of the ways ECHOS is working to break down barriers facing people who are homeless, she noted. The new shelter has also eliminated bunk beds in favor of single beds,

making each bed more accessible to guests, and also features multiple electrical outlets for people to charge their devices. Lockers will be provided as well for guests to store items during the day when they may be at a job or other appointments. A new commercial kitchen will allow for easier prep and service of meals, with more room for guests to eat and socialize. The new site also features two commercial washers and dryers, allowing volunteers to do laundry on site for the first time. A small de-escalation room will provide space for guests to get away from the general population

if necessary, and an expanded room for overnight volunteers has also been added. On the main floor of the new building, an enrichment center offers access to job and community resources as well as the opportunity to work with a case manager. In early 2022, six apartments will open in the building as well. The new site couldn’t have been ready at a better time, Anderson said. “We are anticipating this year to be our most full year,” she stated. “We’ve seen an increase every year in the amount of shelter guests we’ve served.”

When she started volunteering at the Elizabethtown Public Library a few years ago, Sandi Bush noticed something. The landscaping outside the back entrance and in the courtyard on the side of the building, located at 10 S. Market St., needed some attention. “Everything was completely overgrown,” Bush recalled. So, the avid gardener got to work. With a core group of about four or five people, Bush has been cleaning up the landscaping at the library. This year, three trees were removed. One was dead and the other two were oversized for the space. The group also worked with Warburton Nursery and Greenhouses to create a four-season design for one area of the courtyard. “They gave us a map of what to plant where, and we planted everything,” Bush said. “It’s going to have color all year long.” Paul Warburton was very helpful with

the project, she noted, adding that he not only gave the group a significant discount, but also provided an easy-tomaintain design. Along with the new plantings, a volunteer repaired sections of the book return shed as well as the wooden trash cans outside the library. Sherwin-Williams Paint Store donated paint for these projects, and Bush is now looking for people to help with painting. A wooden bench in the courtyard also needs to be painted. Additionally, she’s looking for help with refreshing the metal railings that lead up to the library and enclose the courtyard, including scraping off peeling parts and repainting them. Bush said the volunteers are striving to make the library an inviting place from the moment visitors pull into the parking lot. “We want the outside to look nice,” she said. “We hope people notice what we’ve been doing. It required a lot

of work, but we’re making the courtyard a place people want to be.” She also noted that the courtyard is used regularly by patrons who enjoy sitting outside and accessing the library’s Wi-Fi as well as children’s programs that are held outdoors. Funding for the landscaping work has come from donations from volunteers, Bush said, and the group is always looking for more help. “We could use volunteers to help with weeding and pruning and litter pickup,” she stated. “If you love gardening, we’d love to have your help. If you’d like to help but you can’t come out to work, we are always looking for financial donations to help purchase plants, maintain trees and buy mulch.” The group plans a work day about once a month, Bush said. For more information or to volunteer, contact Bush at sandibush1234@gmail.com or 704-774-2994.

The ECHOS emergency shelter is a low-barrier shelter, Raffensperger explained, meaning there are minimal requirements to be eligible to use it. The shelter is open to anyone from or with connections to the area ECHOS serves - Elizabethtown, Bainbridge, Rheems, Marietta, Mount Joy and Maytown. Both Anderson and Raffensperger stress, however, that the shelter cannot operate without the service of volunteers. “I need a minimum of 70 volunteers each week,” Raffensperger noted. Volunteers can help with anything from checking people in or out to

See This Trail Through A Geologist’s Eyes BY CATHY MOLITORIS

“There’s a lot going on along this trail,” said Jeri Jones, describing the 14-mile Northwest Lancaster County River Trail as it runs from Columbia to Falmouth. “There are so many cool things to see.” Jones combined his knowledge of the trail and his passion for geology to write “Geologic Guide to the Northwest Lancaster County River Trail.” The book, which was published in 2020, provides an overview of 26 stops along the trail, beginning at the Columbia Crossing River Trails Center and ending at the Falmouth boat launch. “There is no geological knowledge required to enjoy this book,” Jones stated, noting that the book begins with what he calls “River Trail Geology 101,” which introduces readers to types of rocks and geologic features such as faults and folds. “I know people who like to carry this book on the trail with them. It’s a tool to enhance their trail walk and give them

Jeri Jones

a purpose while they’re on the trail.” The book was made possible with support from three sponsors - Susquehanna National Heritage Area, Jones Geological Services (Jones’ Spring Grovebased business) and Rivertownes PA USA. Although it only came out last year, the book has sold well, Jones said, and it’s already in its third printing. The idea for the book came from Jones’ own experience along the trail. “I’m an educational geologist, and I used to take field trips to the Chickies

Rock area,” he explained. “I wanted to share my knowledge of the area with people.” Chickies Rock is especially significant in geologic terms, he noted, because the outcrop is a classic example of an “anticline,” or a folded arch. “This is really the best example of this in the mid-Atlantic states,” Jones noted, adding that student groups from colleges throughout the region come to Lancaster County to study the site. A fossil known as skolithos was also discovered in the Chickies Rock area, he said. Jones had been thinking

about writing the book for years, but when he retired from the York County Department of Parks and Recreation in 2017, he finally got to work on it. “I decided, ‘This needs to get done,’” he said. “I made it a priority.” Along with Chickies Rock, the book highlights the Haldeman Mansion, the Musselman-Vesta Furnace, Shocks Mills railroad bridge and the White Cliffs of Conoy. In his 40 years of geologic research, Jones has written several other books, and he said his next project might be revisiting a topic he’s covered in the past - where to pan for gold in southeastern Pennsylvania. In the meantime, he invites people to pick up a copy of his river trail book and hit the trail. The book is available for sale at the Columbia Crossing River Trails Center, 41 Walnut St., and the Zimmerman Center for Heritage, 1706 Long Level Road, Wrightsville. It is also available by contacting Jones at jonesgeo@comcast .net or 717-887-7103.

TAKING CLEAN FACE FIREPLACES TO A WHOLE NEW LEVEL

When Tom Berdos was growing up, he remembers hearing Handel’s “Messiah” during the holidays. “My parents often had it playing in the house, so I’ve always associated it with Christmas,” said the director of music at Chiques United Methodist Church (UMC) in Mount Joy. “I always wanted to conduct it, so finally I said, ‘Why not?’” He asked that question and made the leap into conducting the piece - about 20 years ago. Now he’s preparing to conduct it again, this time for the first time at the Mount Joy church, located at 1215 E. Main St. On Sunday, Dec. 12, the music ministry of the church will present the Christmas portion of “Messiah” at 4 p.m. in a concert featuring a large community chorus and full orchestra. Tickets for the concert will go on sale on Monday, Nov. 1. A group of singers and instrumentalists from the community and surrounding areas has been hard at work practicing for the concert since early October. Along with community members, soloists at the concert will include soprano Monica Ziglar, mezzo-soprano Amy Yovanovich, tenor Brian Ernstes and bass Justin Beck.

Berdos, who became director of music at Chiques UMC in June, is joined in rehearsals by his wife, Deborah, who is the church organist. She’ll also sing soprano in the concert. Berdos said the concert offers the community an opportunity to hear an iconic piece of music that’s been performed consistently since it was composed in the 1740s. “It was originally conceived as a concert piece,” he explained. Over the years, he has honed his conducting skills for the music, which proved to be a challenge. “The first year I conducted it was a learning experience,” Berdos said, “but we got through it. It’s not the easiest to conduct.” Despite the rigor of conducting such a challenging piece, Berdos doesn’t envision stopping any time soon. “I do this for the glory of God,” he stated. “And it also gives people in the community the opportunity to sing this wonderful piece of music as part of the chorus or to enjoy it as part of the audience.” For more information on the concert or to order tickets, call the “Messiah” ticket line at 717-742-5254 or email ccmusic.tom@gmail.com.

Elizabethtown Tennis Team Achieves Milestone

BY ERIC PYLES

While most of the high school sports world has their sights set on the end of the regular season, the girl’s tennis team is knee deep in their postseason where, for the first time in over three decades, the Lady Bears qualified for the District 3 Team Tournament. “Qualifying for team districts for the first time in 35 years represents a major mile-

stone for our program and our players,” said LancasterLebanon League coach of the year Brenda McBride. “We are a team built from the ground up, as our top four senior players began playing tennis only 3 years ago.” As many sports fans know, the postseason is often not kind to newcomers and the experience was no different for Elizabethtown, falling in the opening round by a 3-1

final to Dallastown. “Dallastown is synonymous with elite tennis,” said McBride. “In the post-season, at some point you’re going to come up against a team with a little higher skill level in terms of power and consistency. That was the difference today.” Julia Anderson collected the single win for E-town, topping Catherine Lasher in number three singles with the Lady Wildcats claiming both doubles matches and the other completed singles match. Despite the loss McBride remained positive. “As a team we worked so hard and achieved our goal of winning the section. The girls will always have that with them. It has been just a wonderfully successful year for our team.” The team action was not the only district tennis for Elizabethtown thanks to Allison Evans getting an at large bid to the 3A singles tournament that kicked off on October 15th. “We are so thrilled that Ally was selected for the atlarge bid,” said McBride. “There are some very good players that did not get in.” Evans’ time in the singles bracket followed the same path as E-town’s team journey, a first round loss, with the Etown senior falling to Mechanicsburg’s Taryn Zerby by a 6-0, 6-0 final. leaving McBride to say, “She ran into a very skilled and consistent freshman in Taryn Zerbe who will be a force to be reckoned with over the next few years,” said McBride. “Taryn played a near perfect match in terms of placement and power and made very few unforced errors. Ally can hold her head high. With Ally, you just cannot ask for a better example in showing what hard work and consistency can do, both on and off the court.” FIELD HOCKEY Typically, when ‘free hockey’ is mentioned in the sports world it is referencing an overtime period but in a COVID world it can mean a game that was not originally on the schedule prior to the season but one added as a make-up game. The Lady Bear field hockey team did have a taste of traditional “free hockey” with two overtime wins during the regular season but their October 15th clash with

Susquehanna Township was the COVID variety. The result of that late season add was a 1-0 loss that set the Lady Bears final record at 6-10-2. Alaina Telenko posted 15 saves in her final high school contest but was unable to stop Ava Waters’ game winner in the fourth quarter, sending the visiting Lady Indians off with the victory. VOLLEYBALL The wins keep coming for the girls’ volleyball team with the Lady Bears now sporting a 15-0 mark on the season after taking out Lampeter-Strasburg and Solanco. E-town used 14 kills and six aces from Kallee Locker combined with 18 assists from Angela Costa-Ouimet to cruise by L-S on the 14th, posting wins of 25-7, 25-18 and 25-17. Paige O’Connell added five digs and Anna Mower one block to aid the winning effort. Four days later the Lady Bears locked up their first section title since 2017 by topping Solanco by the same 3-0 final. This time it was 18 kills and eight digs from Sydney Stewart combined with 27 assists and five aces from Costa-Ouimet that led to wins of 25-12, 25-17 and 25-9. O’Connell matched Stewart’s eight digs while Chloe Merkt and Liz Kern added one block each.

Sports from pg 10 CROSS COUNTRY The cross-country teams made their annual trip to Ephrata for the L-L Championship on October 19th, and it was a memorable one for the Lady Bears. Their seventh-place team finish was good enough to earn a spot in the upcoming District 33A Championship on October 30th. Jordan DiRisio fronted the team finish, taking 17th. Ali Fink was the next Lady Bear to cross, doing so in 39th place while Lilah Drager (61st), Julia McAlonis (64th) and Jillian Wivell (67th) rounded out the scoring five. On the boy’s side it was Dalton Fink and his 52nd place run leading E-town to a 17th place team finish. Jaycen Conrad (81st) and Nathan Johnson (82nd) are primed to join Fink and the Lady Bears at the district meet but will have to wait to see if they make the cut. Jackson Kay (110th) and Ethan Cronin (112th) completed the top five.

FOOTBALL For 24 minutes the E-town football team hung with Cocalico but that all changed early in the third quarter and the result was a 49-28 loss on October 15th. Hayden Haver’s one yard plunge coupled with one of three Josh Rudy TD passes had the Bears in a one score, 21-14, game at intermission. But in a few short minutes, that deficit grew to 35-14 thanks to a 65-yard Anthony Bourassa score and a 41-yard Steven Flinton scamper sandwiched around Rudy’s lone interception of the game. The Bears regained their footing after that stretch and played Cocalico even the rest of the way, but the damage was done. Rudy accounted for the final two E-town scores, hitting Braden Cummings (3-50, TD) for a six-yard score before hooking up with Gilhool (4-77, 2TD) again, this one from 12yards out. Rudy finished with 247 yards and three TDs while Logan Lentz added 78 total yards on 15 touches.

Small Business Organization Adds Chapter

R077463

Gary Seibert, CEO of the Small Business Resource Association (SBRA), has announced the expansion of the SBRA into southcentral Pennsylvania (SCP). The SBRA, based in Berks County, is a membership organization that provides resources and services to owners of small and mid-sized businesses to help them gain a competitive advantage in today’s business world. SBRA member benefits include networking, advertising, educational, and promotional opportunities. In order to maximize the positive effects the SBRA provides to its community of members, the SBRA localizes chapters to certain geographical areas. Stacey Derck has been named as the SBRA’s executive director of the SCP Chapter. The Affiliate Chapter’s office will be located at 206 S. Market St., Elizabethtown. Derck

is co-owner and operator of The Hub on Market, the Hive Etown, EVO 206 Coffee Company, and WhirliGig Unique Boutiques. The SCP Chapter will be open to people from Adams, Cumberland, Dauphin, Franklin, Huntington, Juniata, Lancaster, Lebanon, Mifflin, Perry, Snyder, and York counties. A grand opening event, including a ribbon cutting,

took place on Oct. 6 at 5 p.m. and was followed by an SBRA networking event at 206 S. Market St. The SBRA originated when Gary Seibert, a business consultant, realized a common need among many of his clients. These small business owners lacked the time and resources to help themselves navigate day-to-day challenges that were threatening their

business success. Seibert noted that the SBRA focuses on business improvement, employee development and family enrichment. The organization’s mission is “empowering businesses with the resources necessary to be successful and profitable through loyal, engaged employees with happy, united families.” SBRA member benefits are not only provided to the business/owner, but are extended to the employees of the business as well as the employees’ family members. These resources include favorable pricing on all insurances, including health insurance; HR services; marketing, accounting, and legal services; educational content through workshops, seminars, and podcasts; and discounts from members in a variety of industries. WSM Plans Annual Rescue Mission Food Drive BY COURTNEY MENGEL

For the past 116 years, Water Street Mission (WSM), located at 210 S. Prince St., Lancaster, has provided men, women, and children experiencing homelessness in Lancaster County with access to medical, dental, behavioral health, spiritual, and career support. As a religious organization, one of the goals of WSM is to give people a sense of hope and healing so they can find restoration with God. On Monday, Nov. 1, WSM will launch its annual Rescue Mission Food Drive (RMFD) with the goal of collecting over 70,000 pounds of nonperishable food - which would weigh roughly the same as 24 cars - by Sunday, Dec. 19. Proceeds from RMFD will go in two directions: providing meals for men, women, and children experiencing homelessness and also supporting the Outreach Center, a food distribution center for neighbors of WSM. The Outreach Center provides grocery assis-

during RMFD is instrumental in meeting the needs of the community, especially as the winter season nears. This winter, WSM estimates it will serve nearly 45,000 meals in its dining hall for men, women, and children experiencing homelessness. Over the colder months, WSM sees an increase in intakes as guests seek to escape the elements. “We appreciate people in the community who have partnered with us through this food drive,” said Siewart. “ We really feel blessed and supported. Every year, people take part in this, so they’re helping us in more ways than one. It lifts our spirits when we see people respond.” Some of the suggested donation items include boxed cereal, canned fruit,

canned meats, canned vegetables, condiments, pasta, rice, mac and cheese, and more. Items in glass containers are strongly discouraged. Donations can be dropped off at Sharp Shopper, Boscov ’s, Community Aid, and any Sheetz, Weis Markets, and AAA Central Penn location in Lancaster County. Donations can also be dropped off at WSM’s dock on Mondays through Saturdays from 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Anyone looking to participate or learn more about the event and food items needed can visit http://rescue missionfooddrive.org.
