Elizabethtown

Champions for butterflies

It started with one milkweed plant. A few years ago, a neighbor’s husband gave Kim Flenke a milkweed plant for her yard. From there, the plant grew - and so did Kim’s passion for butterflies, including the endangered monarchs that rely on milkweed for food. Since that first plant, Kim has expanded the garden around her Elizabethtown home to include hundreds of plants for the monarchs as well as dill and other host plants for Eastern black swallowtails.

“If all of us did something we love in an area we love, everyone could just do a little bit to make a big change.”

It’s become a bit of an obsession, she said with a laugh, and it’s one she’s joined in by her daughter, Kelley Flenke. The duo spends hours each week caring for the plants and the butterfly chrysalises in caterpillar “hotels” Kim has in her yard.

“Once you get into this process, it just spirals out of control,” Kim said. “I’m obsessed. I’m hooked. Every season, I look forward to how many butterflies we have.”

After receiving that first milkweed plant, Kim began reading up on the deteriorating numbers of monarch butterflies. “I started researching what the eggs look like, what the caterpillars look like, and what I could do to help,” she said. “I knew the numbers are going down in the species, and I’ve been drawn to the idea of ‘What little part can I do to help improve the world?’ If all of us

did something we love in an area we love, everyone could just do a little bit to make a big change.”

This year alone, Kim and Kelley released more than 50 monarchs and more than 60 Eastern black swallowtails.

“Just a few weeks ago, someone in E-town told me they found some of the Eastern black swallowtails on their dill plant,”

Kim said.

For her part, Kelley is just as passionate about the project as her mom. “We both can’t wait to clock out at the end of our day jobs to run home and work on our caterpillars,” Kim shared.

“It’s like a full-time job after our

full-time jobs.”

Raising the butterflies requires daily work, including cleaning their hotels and supplying fresh food. As they got into the hobby, the mother-daughter pair reached out to Milkweed 4 Monarchs, an Elizabethtown-based organization that promotes support for the species. The organization is run by Cindy Leonard, who sells milkweed seeds all over the world. Leonard provided additional varieties of milkweed for Kim’s yard as well as advice.

In doing her research, Kim has learned a lot about butterflies. “I found out that 90% or more of natural monarchs will not

Spend just a few minutes with Sammi Simmons, and you’ll notice something: Her enthusiasm is contagious.

Simmons is bringing that passion and purpose to Cornerstone Youth Center, where she

From an early age, Virginia Hall knew what she wanted to do with her life. In sixth grade, she decided she would become a doctor.

“I grew up in a family of eight children in 11 years,” said the woman who serves as a volunteer physician for Hope Within Ministries Community Health, Counseling & Dental Center in Elizabethtown. “We had nothing. We didn’t get the medical care we needed when we were

younger, so I was set on making sure other people had the opportunities I didn’t.”

Throughout her long medical career, Hall has dedicated herself to giving back to others, making a difference around the world.

In September, Hall received the International Voluntary Service Award from the Pennsylvania Medical Society for her work in both Sierra Leone and India.

“I had no idea I was nominated, so I was very surprised,” she recalled. “I don’t look at anything that I do as anything special. It’s

Vendors galore at the Holiday Market on Adele

Shopping at the Holiday Market on Adele can yield unique gifts and support small businesses at the same time, said Chelsey Harnly, who is organizing the event with Stephanie Rogers. The Holiday Market on Adele will be held on Saturday, Nov. 9, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Manheim Farm Show exhibition hall, 502 Adele Ave., Manheim.

The market will feature more than 20 vendors, including Amy’s Mixing Bowl, Thirty-One Gifts, PaperPie Learning, Pampered Chef and Mary Kay. Local crafters will sell items including clay earrings, playdough kits, crocheted goods, woodcut items and more.

DLT Farms will sell soup, sandwiches and loaded macaroni and cheese. The White Magnolia Coffee Co. food truck will sell coffee and other drinks.

“The food stands will be giving a portion of sales to Unlocked Closet, a (nonprofit organization) in Ephrata,” Harnly said. “They provide items to foster and adoptive families.”

She and Rogers, who both have their own small businesses, began organizing the Holiday Market on Adele eight years ago. “Steph and I started this event because we both were having a hard time getting into other big vendor events, so we figured we would just create our own,” Harnly shared. “A fundraising aspect was super important to us because we wanted to give back, and Unlocked Closet meets such a great need in the foster and adoptive community.”

Rogers encourages everyone to come out for the market, noting, “This is a great event to start your Christmas shopping or just get to know some local businesses. … It’s a great way to support local families and keep our local economy running. I know they all appreciate the

support every year.”

The exhibition hall building is handicapped-accessible. Parking is available near the building on Adele Avenue as well as across the street by the pool/softball field.

Dear Brother or Sister in Christ, In the United States, 40% of Christians do not vote.

If God did not want us to have an active role in His plans, He would not have called us to action repeatedly throughout Scripture. Again and again, from Genesis to Revelation, He calls on His people to act, to stand against evil, and to stand up for the needy and vulnerable (Isaiah 6:8, Matthew 28:18-20, Ephesians 5:11, Proverbs 29:2, Proverbs 31:8-9). If we sit on the sidelines while every good thing our nation stands for is destroyed, we will have violated far more Scripture than the handful of passages that may be misused to justify inaction.

Christians oftentimes ignore getting involved in the voting process for several reasons: (1) they don’t believe their vote counts, (2) they have been misinformed, or (3) they have never done it; therefore, it’s hard to break the ice. We encourage you to pray and ask God to help you break free from these fears. We are all called upon to do the right thing.

Many Christians do not vote because of pressure from their church and community. It is time to fully reverse that habit. We are all called upon to do the right thing. The hard part is finding the courage to stand up, to stand in the gap. Initially, you may be judged for doing so. But standing in the gap for good is the only way to stop this storm.

Here’s what you can do today to save the country:

1. You can vote early by mail, or in-person. Call us and we’ll help you better understand the options Pennsylvania offers: 717-403-7041.

2. Talk to everyone about why you are voting and why they should too.

3. Pray for our nation and our nation’s leaders. Please act. You don’t want to wake-up the day after the 2024 election wishing you had done more to save your community and your country.

Sincerely,

Amishman from Wayne County, Ohio

our mission to potential donors well.”

The development coordinator is a new position at Cornerstone, which provides after-school activities for youths in grades six through 12, all with a Christian focus.

“With the way our ministry is going, one of the areas we felt we needed to grow in most was raising funds, because we are dependent on contributions from individuals, businesses and churches,” Bush shared.

“We wanted to bring someone in who can help us continue to reach those groups, but also spread the message of what Cornerstone is and why it’s so important to the community.”

Prior to joining the staff at Cornerstone, Simmons worked in retirement

communities for most of her career. “I just came from a hospice group,” she shared. “I’ve been working with geriatrics, with the elderly, for many, many years, always in the activity department realm.”

The new job is a big switch in terms of the population she’ll serve, Simmons said, but she has lots of experience working with youths through her church.

The 2007 Donegal High School graduate was also familiar with Cornerstone and its mission before taking the job.

“A close friend of ours, their kids come here,” she remarked. “We’ve seen the impact Cornerstone has had on their lives, but we’ve also heard the other stories they share of students that

have come here.”

As she settles into her new role, Simmons is focusing on expanding the circle of supporters for Cornerstone, reaching out to contacts in the Mount Joy and Elizabethtown areas as well as in Manheim, where she lives with her husband, Kevin, and their 4-year-old son.

“Something that is near and dear to my heart is being able to share the stories that the kids who come here have,” she said. “I want to be able to network with different communities that have the same mission we have that would love to see our next generation grow into good, sound youth and adults who will thrive in the world.”

Although she’s only been with Cornerstone a short time, she has already witnessed the organization’s impact on the students who attend programming.

“A constant message I’ve heard is that this has been a safe space,” she said. “Without Cornerstone, maybe these kids would have just been sitting at home doing nothing, or they would have been getting into trouble somehow. This is a place where they’ve made friends, they’ve built memories, and I think that’s so important. This is creating a foundation for them to build healthier and happier lives as they grow up.”

Along with providing after-school activities such

as games, music, art, homework help and fellowship, Cornerstone holds special events such as its upcoming Lock-In/Bail Out fundraiser. While students enjoy a lock-in on Friday, Nov. 8, to Saturday, Nov. 9, board members, staff and volunteers will work the phones to raise funds to be bailed out of “jail” at the center, located at 95 S. Wilson Ave., Elizabethtown.

“Last year was our first event like this, and we raised $35,000 in one night,” Bush said. “It was a big success. We’re hoping to do even better this year.”

Hailey and the shelter team have spent the offseason updating the shelter processes to better serve clients.

Volunteer tasks include welcoming guests, serving meals, preparing beds, and supporting shelter staff members. Shifts are available during mornings, during days, and overnight. Volunteers for overnight shifts must be 21 or older.

Those unable to volunteer in person may participate in providing meals prepared off-site and delivered to the shelter.

The EES operates as a low-barrier shelter, meaning it removes as many obstacles as possible for

individuals seeking emergency housing. For more information on volunteer opportunities or to register for volunteer training, contact Carrie Stricker at volunteer@ECHOSLancaster .org or call 717-361-0740.

Hailey Spangler (left), shelter coordinator, and Ashley Bulley, executive director of ECHOS, are ready to assist guests when the shelter opens in December.

The book “Beechdale Road” is the family’s attempt to share its story of grief, anger and pain but also unexplainable grace, kindness and mercy at the hands of the Amish community.

Shertzer works as an adult advocate at The Factory Ministries in Paradise. She is recently married to her husband, Tanner. During the program, child care will be provided for infants through prekindergartners. just an extension of what we do as physicians.”

Hall first went to Sierra Leone in the 1990s. “We were helping a couple from New Cumberland who were building a well to access uncontaminated water,” she said, noting that she helped to construct a meeting hall, mixing mortar and laying cement blocks. She also remembered cooking over an open fire for meals. “We ate a lot of rice,” she said with a laugh. During her time there, she put her medical skills to use. “One of the cooks pulled me aside. I had noticed she walked with a limp,” Hall said. The woman had an infection on her leg, which, because of the numerous parasites in the water, couldn’t easily be cleaned.

“I had brought along a few meager medical supplies, so I tended to her and scrubbed her leg twice a day during the time I was there,” Hall commented. Through Hall’s efforts, the woman recovered and was on her way to healing fully by the time Hall’s group returned home.

In the 2000s, Hall traveled to India with the World Surgical Foundation Gift of Life program, fixing congenital heart defects. In India, Hall, along with medical students and nurse practitioners, ran an active medical practice and developed clinics to provide medical care to women and children. Her contributions made strides in better health outcomes for her patients there. In addition, she implemented policies that paved the way for more permanent improvements in the health of both women and children in the region.

Coordinator sought for Project Linus

The Lititz/Lancaster chapter of Project Linus has an immediate need for a volunteer coordinator. The current coordinator will retire effective Tuesday, Dec. 31, and the chapter will disband if a new coordinator has not been found.

Project Linus is a nonprofit, all-volunteer group with the mis -

sion of providing new, homemade blankets to children in need in Lancaster County. The chapter is one of more than 300 across the country. Last year, it made and donated 1,715 blankets in Lancaster County. The chapter has donated more than 60,000 blankets since its inception in 2000.

Hall grew up near Valley Forge and now lives in Hummelstown with her husband, John. She earned her medical education from the former Hahnemann Medical School in Philadelphia and was associated with the Milton S. Hershey Medical Center until she retired in 2018. She currently serves as the chair of the Foundation of the Pennsylvania Medical Society.

“My family had no money, but through scholarships and loans and jobs, I got through college and medical school,” she said. “In the Pennsylvania Medical Society, we give scholarships and loans to medical students.”

Hall is also a volunteer OB-GYN physician for Hope Within, an organization that offers free primary health care services for medically uninsured, low-income residents of Dauphin, Lancaster and Lebanon counties.

“Her service has been invaluable, especially for those who are newly arrived in the country,” said Hope Within executive director Anne Marie McAlester, describing Hall. “She has done all the prenatal care for many of the Ukrainians and migrants from the Southern border.”

At age 77, Hall has no plans to stop serving others.

“There are so many things that need to be done yet,” she said, noting, for example, that the United States has the highest maternal mortality rate of all developed countries in the world. “If life gives you opportunities, you should use them to help others.”

Fulton Bank receives Freedom Award

Lancaster-based Fulton Bank was recognized as a recipient of the 2024 Secretary of Defense Employer Support Freedom Award, the highest recognition given by the Department of Defense to employers for their exceptional support of National Guard and Reserve members.

Fulton Bank team members who accepted the award during a ceremony held at the Pentagon on Aug. 22 were John Glover, head of commercial banking; Lisa Johanning, director of talent management; Lisa DeCoste, senior commercial relationship manager; Natasha Luddington, chief legal officer; and Curt Myers, chief executive officer.

The Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR), a Department of Defense (DOD) office, runs the annual award program, which has presented the honor to employers since 1996.

Recipients of the award include small and large private businesses and public sector employers nominated by a National Guard or Reserve employee in their organization. Award nominations are accepted from all 50 states, GuamCNMI, Puerto Rico, U.S. Virgin Islands and District of Columbia.

Fulton Bank is one of only 15 employers nationwide selected to receive the Secretary of Defense Employer Support Freedom Award this year.

Pennsylvania Army National Guard Col. Brett Gagnon nominated the Fulton Bank for the Freedom Award for its support of his military career. In

nominating the bank for the award, Gagnon stated that corporate executives, managers and co-workers all sent cards, letters and other items to him and unit members during his most recent deployment. Bank personnel also maintained contact with his family, providing gift cards and support to his wife and children.

Fulton Bank also provides benefits to Guard and Reserve members. Deployed service members receive 52 weeks of differential pay while maintaining family health, retirement and investment benefits.

The bank’s nomination was selected from the 30 nationwide finalists.

Numerous Fulton Bank supervisors have received a Patriot Award, Seven Seals Award and Above and Beyond Awards. They have also attended an ESGR Boss Lift event and awards luncheon for which they received a Pennsylvania ESGR Certificate of Support.

ESGR exists to foster a culture in which all employers support and value the employment and military service of members of the National Guard and Reserve in the United States. ESGR facilitates and promotes a cooperative culture of employer support for National Guard and Reserve service by developing and advocating mutually beneficial initiatives, recognizing outstanding employer support, increasing awareness of applicable laws and policies, resolving potential conflicts between employers and their service members and acting as the employers’ principal advocate within DOD.
