The Winters Heritage House Museum offers a variety of programming throughout the year, including workshops for children and adults. The organization also hosts community groups such as local Girl Scout troops, which meet on the premises, and leads an annual walking tour for third-grade students, which is tentatively set to return this spring. Swartz estimated that the museum has held an annual craft show for at least 30 years. “We do it to help support the community and food bank and also to give local craftspeople a platform to showcase their work,” she remarked. “We like to recognize local crafters.” For more information on the Heritage Craft Show, visit www.elizabethtownhistory.org.

Admission to the craft show is by cash donation or a nonperishable food item. Cash and food donations will benefit the Community Cupboard of Elizabethtown, with the exception of what’s sold in the “100% room.” That room, Swartz explained, will feature items made in-house by various committees, including a quilting group and a textile committee, and all proceeds will benefit the museum. “We also call that room the ‘Heritage House room,’ and we use the money from anything we sell from that room to help offset costs of our educational programs,” she noted.

Items are donated by seniors, friends of the center, community members and local businesses. More than 100 prizes will be offered in a giveaway drawing at the bazaar, including gift cards, children’s items, fall and holiday decor, snacks, tools and more. Winners will be drawn at 1 p.m., and they do not need to be present to win.

Elizabethtown College to provide a variety for our students, faculty, staff and the public,” Straub noted. The series is part of the college’s mission to offer educational and entertaining programming, she said, adding, “These internationally known speakers have remarkable backgrounds, experiences and insights and will provide a night out for people who are looking to relax and enjoy stories that we all have heard and have a curiosity to learn more about if given the opportunity.” Straub added that not only does the series offer a range of speakers and topics, but it’s open to people who want to enjoy it all or just one lecture. “Our lecture series is unique as you can purchase subscriptions in bundles of five or three speakers who spark your interest,” along with individual tickets, she stated. The lectures will be held at 7:30 p.m. on campus in the Leffler Chapel and Performance Center, with the exception of Collins’ talk, which will be held at the Lancaster Marriott at Penn Square. Members of the Columbia and Susquehanna Model Railroad

For Walter Bosch, who came to check out the display on a recent Sunday and was joined by a crowd of other visitors, the trains offer a chance to indulge in nostalgia. “I love watching them,” he said. Christopher noted that when he joined the club about four years ago, it brought him right back to his childhood. “I’ve loved trains since I was a little kid,” he said, echoing the sentiment of most of the members in the club. “When I started here, my love of HO trains just came flooding back to me.” “HO,” as Christopher explained, is the type of scale used for the model trains. The trains are 187th the size of their real counterparts, and the members said they believe it’s the best scale for displaying accurate details and providing the best viewing experience. Membership in the club is open to anyone who loves trains. “We have no official officers, no dues, no membership fees,” said Christopher. “We’re just a bunch of guys who love trains and love to get together. Our only rule is you have to get along with everybody.” The display is constantly evolving as new members join and add to it, so even if you’ve seen it once, you’ll see something new the next time

As in previous years, this Special Community Memorial Service is open to all members of the community wishing to pay tribute to special people during this holiday season. Everyone is welcome to share this experience and support for one another. If you cannot attend, you may call for a link to livestream the service or a DVD copy of the service. If you, or someone you know, would like to have a deceased loved one remembered at this service, please call John Sheetz, Andy Dieck, Chad Habecker or Joan Rutt at the Sheetz Funeral Home, 717-653-5441 or e-mail us at sfh@sheetzfuneralhome.com. Inform us of the loved one’s name and the approximate number of family members who will be attending the service.

you visit, Cohan said. And the members of the club are on hand each weekend to answer questions or point out unique features of the display. “If you’ve ever enjoyed watching trains, you’ll love this,” Christopher said. The Columbia and Susquehanna Model Railroad will run from 1 to 4 p.m. at 21 N. Second St., Columbia, on Saturdays and Sundays from Nov. 27 through Jan. 9 (except for Christmas Day and New Year’s Day). Admission is free. On the second floor of the Columbia Historic Preservation Society, you can find a bunch of kids indulging in their passion. But these aren’t your typical kids - most are in their 60s and 70s. “We’re really kids who never grew up,” explained Chris Cohan, one of the younger members of the Columbia and Susquehanna Model Railroad. “We just love trains.” The group shares its enthusiasm for HO-scale model trains on the fourth Sunday of the month from May through October. Beginning Thanksgiving weekend, the display runs on Saturdays and Sundays through the first weekend after the new year. “We do this because we love it, and we do it for the kids,” said member

Rick Christopher. “And, we do it for the kids who are maybe just a little bit older than you’d expect.” The 2,200-square-foot layout features a section depicting Columbia’s riverfront in the 1930s, ’40s and ’50s, created by member Tony Segro. “Tony scratch-built every one of these buildings,” said Cohan, noting that two in the layout still stand in Columbia today. Segro started on the layout in 2000, working on and off over the next 16 years to complete it. “I used photos from the historical society to make it as accurate as I could,” he stated. “They had a lot of information I could use.” The layout also includes scenes created by the imagination of the club members.

Braden Cummings returns a kickoff for the E-town’s Jonathan Runnels pressures ManBears in their 42-0, Section Two loss at Manheim heim quarterback Judd Novak during the Central on October 22. Bears’ 42-0, Section Two loss to the host Barons on October 22.

their District 3-3A opening round doubles match. The pair fell to Mechanicsburg’s Taryn Zerby and Patricia Kandrot, 6-2, 6-2. VOLLEYBALL Step one to the 2021 volleyball season is officially complete for the Lady Bears. With a 3-0 sweep over Garden Spot on October 20th, E-town wrapped up a perfect 16-0 regular season. “E-town’s girls’ volleyball players are resilient and relentless,” said inter-

im head coach Karen Eberly. “They climbed every hurdle in their path this season to accomplish our first goal of winning Section Two. Now we are working hard to achieve the other goals that we have set for our season.” Angela Costa-Ouimet fronted the 25-20, 25-14, 25-12 regular season finale with 16 assists, eight digs and three aces. Sydney Stewart tallied 11 kills and three aces while Kallee Locker chipped in with three blocks. The first step towards those other

goals came on the 25th with a 25-21, 25-13, 25-15 victory over Manheim Township in the Lancaster-Lebanon League semifinals. Elizabethtown’s 14th sweep of the season earned the Lady Bears a spot in the L-L finals for the first time since 2019 and just the third time overall. Stewart led the way with 13 kills and 11 digs while Costa-Ouimet added 19 assists and three aces. Paige Horst matched those three aces with Liz Kerin tacking on seven blocks.

Few statistics can predict the outcome in a football game more accurate than turnover differential. The Bears 42-0 loss to Manheim Central on October 22nd serves as the perfect example. Central cruised to the win behind four Elizabethtown turnovers which also helped the Barons to a 350-127 yardage edge. One of those turnovers led to a 29-yard Owen Sensenig score that finished off the scoring while Manheim added a 41yard Kahlen Watt punt return score during their 21-point fourth quarter outburst that turned a competitive affair into the 42-0 final. Patrick Gilhool (two catches, 56 yards) and Brady Breault (two catches, 22 yards) handled the bulk of Josh Rudy’s 90 passing yards and seven completions. Cade Capello topped the ground attack with 44 yards on 14 carries with Rudy adding 10-yards on seven carries. BOYS’ SOCCER The boys’ soccer team’s foray into the District 3-4A postseason lasted 80minutes thanks to a 4-0 loss on October 26th. Top seeded Central Dauphin handed E-town that loss, putting the Bears final mark at 6-8-3. TENNIS One of the most successful seasons in E-town girl’s tennis came to a close on October 22nd when Allison Evans and Rylee Bender dropped

The Elizabethtown Area School District will hold its annual Veterans Day ceremony on Thursday, Nov. 11, to honor the community’s military veterans. This outdoor service will begin at 10 a.m. in the rear of Elizabethtown Area High School, 600 E. High St., Elizabethtown. The program affords local school officials and high school students an opportunity to salute local veterans for their service and sacrifice to the country. It also is an opportunity for students to learn about the contributions that veterans have made and learn about the meaning of the day. All local veterans are invited to take part in the celebration. Veterans from the greater Elizabethtown community who are interested in being a part of the ceremony may make reservations by visiting

www.etownschools.org and completing the online registration form by Tuesday, Nov. 9. They may also register for the program by contacting Troy Portser, director of school and community information, at 717-367-1521, ext. 10024, or troy_portser@etownschools.org. Taking part in the program will be Terry Seiders, school board president; Michele Balliet, superintendent of schools; Chuck Mummert, mayor of Elizabethtown Borough; and numerous high school students. The school district’s annual Veterans Day program is a way for the district to promote civic involvement and appreciation of the liberties Americans have. The ceremony is a rain-or-shine event, and the public is encouraged to attend.

“This is not an easy show to figure out,” said Jeremy Patterson, who will direct a staged reading of “Blackbird” at Susquehanna Stage. “Whatever you come in believing will be challenged.” The staged reading will be presented at the theater, 133 W. Market St., Marietta, on Saturday, Nov. 6, at 8 p.m. “This is a modern play written by David Harrower,” Patterson stated. “It’s about a meeting between a woman in her late 20s and a man in his 50s and a relationship that occurred between them 15 years prior.” This is the first play Patterson has directed, and he said he decided to stretch when he was invited to direct a show by Asher Johnson, a board member who handles marketing for the theater. “I pitched him the hardest thing I

could think of sort of thinking he’d say ‘no,’ but he didn’t,” Patterson recalled. “He embraced it.” Patterson chose the show as much for its small cast - it features just two characters - as for its subject matter. “Blackbird” will feature Kevin Ditzler in the role of Ray and Gabrielle Dina in the role of Una. After the show, representatives from YWCA Lancaster will be on hand for an audience talkback. “This is a show about a young woman who has been abused. It’s important to funnel that back into the community, to people who can help the audience explore the piece in a safe setting,” Patterson noted. “For me, this exists solely as a work of art, but the responsibility on my end after participating in the art is to put it into the hands of people who are experts in the field.” Patterson said a staged reading
