Comedy And Chaos In “The Curious Savage” BY CATHY MOLITORIS
“This is a comedy, but it’s also a mystery,” said Tori Bressler, who plays Lily Belle Savage in Elizabethtown Area High School’s fall play, “The Curious Savage.” “You can expect some laughs, some chaos and tons of fun.” The show will be performed in the high school auditorium at 600 E. High St. on Thursday, Nov. 11, at 7 p.m. and on Saturday, Nov. 13, at 1 and 7 p.m. “This play is about an older woman, Ethel P. Savage, who is deemed crazy by her stepchildren, and they move her into a place where a lot of other crazy people live,” explained Keli Georges, a senior who portrays Ethel P. Savage. Her character is an elderly widow who has inherited $10 million from her husband and who intends to give it all away to people who wish to pursue their foolish dreams. Her family has her committed to a sanatorium called The Cloisters to prevent her from giving up their family fortune. “You can expect to leave this
show with a different perspective than you had when you came in,” Keli stated. “This is a play that will get you thinking.” Bryan Murray plays Jeff, one of the residents of The Cloisters. He said he wasn’t familiar with “The Curious Savage” before he signed up to audition, but he’s happy to be a part of the show. “It’s full of a bunch of fun characters who we could really dig our teeth into,” he said. “Each character has his own quirks, and it’s been really fun to get to explore that. … We had the chance to do a lot of character work early on in the rehearsals, which was great. It gave us a chance to understand who we are playing and really flesh out the characters.” Tori noted that the show is full of a wide range of characters, from serious to snooty to goofy. “You’re going to see a lot of different personalities on stage,” she stated. The show features a cast of 11 and a crew of six. Stage managers are Abigail Franz, Emma Dixon and Emma Weaver. Technical managers are Connor Alspaugh and Emma Martin. See Comedy pg 7

As of Nov. 2, the top five requests for 2-1-1 assistance in Pennsylvania were housing and shelter at 42.1%, utilities at 17%, health care and COVID-19 assistance at 10%, employment and income 8.7%, and food at 6.2%. Hundreds of nonprofit organizations exist in Lancaster County specifically to meet these and other needs. For instance,
one who crochets, someone who makes cocoa bombs. It’s really a little bit of everything.” Food and beverages will also be for sale at the event, including hot dogs, chili, chips and soda. Moore said the idea for the show came about after a group of Durham employees started planning for their participation in the GEARS holiday parade, which will be held on Saturday, Dec. 11.

noted, adding that other coordinators of the craft show include Lynn Roden, Victoria Herneisen and Grace Minnich. “We found out that Durham used to do a craft show years ago, and we thought this would be a great way to not only raise some money, but also to support local crafters and vendors.” The committee put an invitation to participate out on Facebook, and the response was overwhelmingly positive, Moore shared. “We got a great response right away,” she stated, “and we have room for more vendors if people are interested in participating.”

Good Samaritan Services provides a full continuum of care to individuals and families experiencing homelessness or at risk of homelessness. Tenfold - an organization formed by the merger of Lancaster Housing Opportunity Partnership (LHOP) and Tabor Community Services in 2020 - offers housing advocacy and financial empowerment to Lancaster County residents. The list goes on and on. On one day, 24 hours, the Lancaster County Community Foundation (LCCF) provides a platform in which people can donate money to participating nonprofits serving this region. This platform, the Extraordinary Give (ExtraGive), is celebrating its 10th year in 2021. Over $60 million has been raised for local organizations by more than 40,000 donors since LCCF started the ExtraGive. Despite the COVID-19 pandemic, last year’s ExtraGive brought in about $13.4 million. This year’s ExtraGive is set for Friday, Nov. 19. Beginning at 12:00:01 a.m. on Nov. 19, individuals may make donations via credit card to participating nonprofits at www.extra give.org. All participating organizations will receive a prorated portion of the stretch pool, which will total at least $500,000. Also, an additional $50,000 in prizes will be offered to participating nonprofit organizations throughout the day in the form of various incentive structures. The funds for the stretch pool and the prizes are available thanks to the LCCF and presenting sponsors. More than 500 nonprofits will participate in the upcoming ExtraGive. To qualify, participants must serve Lancaster County residents, be a registered 501(c)(3) organization in good standing, and have independent audits or reviews. Each participating nonprofit has its own profile on the ExtraGive website, and some include a nondiscriminatory policy, which is a new feature. “This is a nice addition because it helps people know that their values are reflected in the organization to which they’re donating,” stated Tracy Cutler, executive vice president of LCCF. From 6 p.m. to midnight on Nov. 19, LCCF will host the ExtraGive Fest in Penn Square as it counts down the final hours of the event. Live music will be provided by DJ Salinger; Sir Dominique Jordan, The Prolific One; Adrian Garcia; and Mama Tried. There will be a local beer garden from Springhouse Brewing Company as

Step through the doors of Marietta Center for the Arts on Saturday, Nov. 13, and you might feel like you’ve stepped back in time. The organization, located at 133 W. Market St., Marietta, will host a ’70s dance fundraiser from 6:30 to 10:30 p.m. “We’ll have music from DJ Stan Tucker,” said organizer Joni McCrady, who added that the décor will feature tie-dye decorations and a disco ball. “We thought it would be fun to do a ’70s theme, since that’s sort of coming back in clothing and vinyl records, and we thought it would be something light and entertaining.” The event will be a fundraiser for Marietta Center for the Arts, which is the home of Susquehanna Stage. Giveaway baskets will be featured, including a wine basket, a craft beer basket, an Italian-themed basket, a taco basket, a tea basket and more. Each basket is valued at at least $100. “Our last show of the season is ‘All Is Calm,’ and we’ll have a basket for that,” McCrady noted. “It will have two tickets to the show, a gift certificate for dinner beforehand at McCleary’s Pub, the original soundtrack to the show and a book about World War I, which is the period when the show takes place.” A variety of beer and wine will be available for purchase, along with hors d’oeuvres. The bar will also feature a ’70s-themed cocktail, Jungle Juice. McCrady emphasized how grateful she is for the community support of the event. “When we were going around to merchants in the area asking for donations, everyone was so generous,” she said. “Like everyone
during COVID, we were hit hard, and we need the financial support of an event like this.” Although the focus of the party is fundraising, McCrady noted that talking to area merchants also highlighted another benefit of the event. “It was amazing to me the amount of people who didn’t even know this theater existed,” she stated. “That sort of changed our focus to wanting to bring people into this building and become familiar with what we do here.” Along with Susquehanna Stage performances, Marietta Center for Arts holds a variety of classes for A variety of giveaway baschildren and adults, and the space is kets will be up for grabs at a See Dancing pg 9

Lady Bears Post District Win over Mechnicsburg
One of the most important traits of a championship caliber team is the ability to shake off adversity and bounce back from a loss. A perfect 16-0 regular season for the girls’ volleyball team meant their first true taste of adversity came in the Lancaster-Lebanon League Championship match where the Lady Bears suffered their first loss of the season, falling 3-2 to Hempfield. Elizabethtown had just one day to regroup for their District 3-4A opening round affair opposite Mechanicsburg on the 28th and the Lady Bears passed the test with flying colors. E-town rolled the Lady Wildcats, winning 3-0 behind 14 kills from Kallee Locker, 21 assists from Angela
Costa-Ouimet and 15 digs from Sydney Stewart. Locker added two blocks and Stewart six aces to lead E-town to wins of 25-13, 25-20 and 25-14. Elizabethtown’s second round match in their district draw brought a familiar foe in the Ephrata Mountaineers to town and the Lady Bears promptly dispatched the visitors 3-1. The victory assured the Lady Bears a top four finish in the district championship and locked up the team’s first PIAA berth. “We set a goal at the beginning of the season to make states,” said interim head coach Karen Eberly. “We accomplished that goal last night! The players have totally bought in and are playing together as a team. We rely heavily on our captains, but every girl has stepped up and fulfilled

their role on the team.” Locker and Stewart paced the offense with 12 kills apiece while Costa-Ouimet dished out 16 assists. Stewart served up another six aces while Locker added four blocks. Paige Horst added 11 digs during the 25-15, 25-23, 11-25, 25-17 win. The Lady Bears did suffer their first setback of the 2021 season on October 27th with that L-L finals loss to Hempfield, making it five straight L-L titles for the Lady Black Knights. The Lady Bears put themselves in a hole, dropping the opening two sets by a pair of 25-14 finals but were able to stave off the loss by posting their own 25-14 win before adding a 25-23 win to even the match at two sets apiece. Hempfield rallied to take the decisive fifth set, Photo by Cheri Sine E-town’s Elizabeth Kerin slaps a winner past Mechanicsburg’s 15-8, to secure the L-L title. “We had a rough start with losing Makayla Schlosser in the Bears’ 3-0, District Three openinground playoff victory at home on October 28. the first two sets,” said Eberly. “We made some adjustments, started serving tougher and were able to win the next two sets. CROSS COUNTRY Saturday October 30th sent the Etown girls cross county team as well as Dalton Fink, Nathan Johnson and Jaycen Conrad to Newville and Big Spring High School for the 2021 District 3-3A Championship. The Lady Bears posted a 19th place team finish in the 25 full team field. Jordan DiRisio led the way, taking 63rd with a time of 21:06.1. Ali Fink crossed a few seconds later and in 66th place while Jillian Wivell and Sierra Kapcsos finished a mere second apart in 132nd and 133rd place, respectively. Julia McAlonis rounded out the scoring five for E-town, taking 156th place with a time of 22:42.3. Lilah Drager (157th - 22:42.4) and Kendall Hein (193rd - 23:40.1) finished the Lady Bear contingent in Newville. Dalton Fink led the trio of Bears, taking 135th in the boy’s race with a time of 18:28.5. Johnson managed to crack the top 200 with his 195th place run while Conrad closed things

receiving end of that 39-yard strike. Brady Breault handled the rest of the second quarter scoring starting with 42-yard fumble return for a score. The junior wideout also recorded in his lone catch of the game, a 12-yard score that made it 26-7 at the break. Rudy capped the E-town scoring with a 27-yard jaunt in the third that made it 32-7 while Robert Castagna picked up the game’s final score for Solanco, from six yards out, setting the 32-14 final. Rudy finished with just 99 yards through the air, but three TD passes combined with 67-yards and a score on the ground was enough to lead Elizabethtown to victory. Gilhool, Cummings and Breault split the touchdown catches evenly but Gilhool managed the bulk of the yards, accounting for 76 on three catches. Cade Capello led the ground game with 62 yards on 16 carries.

out for Elizabethtown with a 216th place finish. FOOTBALL There are few better ways to end a season then with a win as the Bears can attest thanks to their 32-14 triumph over Solanco on October 29th. The win puts E-town at 4-6 overall and 1-4 in Section Two action. Elizabethtown used a 20-point outburst in the second quarter to turn a tight 7-6 deficit into a comfy 26-6 halftime cushion. Braden Cummings opened the scoring by hauling in a 31-yard TD pass from Josh Rudy, but the Golden Mules answered right back with a score of their own with Elijah Cunningham catching the Bradley Weder pass. Rudy picked up the second of his three touchdown passes early in the second, moving E-town back in front, 12-7, after the failed twopoint try. Patrick Gilhool was on the

Bazaar Will Offer Something For Everyone For two days this week, members of Chiques United Methodist Church (UMC) will be busy in the kitchen. They’ll be making 350 apple dumplings to sell at the church’s 49th annual bazaar, which will be held from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 13, at the church, 1215 E. Main St., Mount Joy. “People come for our apple dumplings,” said Audrey Buckner, bazaar chair. “They are very popular.” This is the 49th year for the bazaar, and although the pandemic canceled the event last year, it didn’t stop the apple dumpling sale. “We did a drive-through apple dumpling pickup last year,” Buckner recalled. While the event is organized by the Women in Mission at Chiques UMC, it’s really a group effort, said Georgia Myers, who added, “We call it an ‘allchurch bazaar.’ Everyone helps.” The bazaar will feature a variety of donated and handmade items
from church members, including cutlery, jewelry, knitted goods and Christmas items. Cookies, pies and cakes will be sold, along with the apple dumplings. A variety of soups, including chicken noodle and vegetable, will be for sale, and turkey and beef barbecue will be available as well. All food will be sold to-go only. The bazaar will also feature a white elephant room, full of what the committee members call “attic treasures.” “Our white elephant room is always a hit,” said Myers. Items in the white elephant room are for sale by donation and will include household items, toys, books and décor. No clothing will be sold. Myers emphasized that the bazaar offers an opportunity to pick up gifts for a bargain, adding, “Everything is low-priced.” Proceeds from the bazaar will benefit local organizations, including Water Street Mission, Align Life Ministries, Mom’s House of Lancaster

and Samaritan’s Purse, as well as international missions. This year’s bazaar is dedicated to Lorraine Lutz, a longtime member and chair of the event. She is the mother of Buckner, who is the third generation in her family to help with the bazaar. Buckner noted that leftover items that are not sold are picked up by GreenDrop and donated to Purple Heart.
“There really is something for everyone at the bazaar,” Buckner remarked, but she emphasized that the event also serves another purpose. “For many people, it’s a chance to come and see friends they haven’t seen in a while. It’s a social event, and it’s a time for fellowship.” Mask wearing and social distancing are encouraged. For more information on the bazaar, call the church at 717-653-5175.
