Great Turkey Hunt Will Benefit ECHOS
Raising Spirits And Raising Hope “This is a way to have a really fun day for your whole family without breaking the bank,” said Carrie McCullough, managing director of Brittany’s Hope. “It’s a great way to get in the Christmas spirit.” She was talking about Christmas at the Star Barn Village, an annual benefit for Brittany’s Hope, which will be held from 7:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 4, at Stone Gables Estate, 1 Hollinger Lane, Elizabethtown. The event will feature two admission plans. VIP tickets will include breakfast with Santa provided by Food For Thought Catering, a family portrait by Melissa McClain Photography and all general admission activities. VIP tickets should be purchased in advance, McCullough said, noting that they sell out quickly. General admission tickets, which are valid from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., may be purchased in advance for a discount or at the event. General admission activities will include outdoor games, pony rides, a petting zoo, a campfire with s’mores, meet-and-greets with The Enchanted Teapot characters, letting writing to Santa and a cookie-decorating station. “There are several new things this year,” McCullough stated, noting that the Star Barn has allowed the use of its facilities, which will be decked out in holiday finery. “There will be a new Christkindlmarkt (Christmas market) as well as Christmas miniatures on display.” Guests can also take a self-guided tour of the historic 275-acre Stone Gables Estate, which will be decorated for the holidays. All proceeds from the event will benefit Brittany’s Hope, an organization that supports abandoned and at-risk children through international special needs adoption grants and humanitarian efforts. “One hundred percent of the money raised at this event goes to our mission,” McCullough remarked, “and it gets distributed
right away to our programs in Kenya, Vietnam and Ethiopia.” She noted that Christmas at the Star Barn Village is a win-win for everyone who attends, adding, “You get to have a fun day full of Christ-
massy atmosphere and activities, and you also get to support Brittany’s Hope at the same time.” For more information or to purchase tickets, visit www.Christmas AtTheStarBarnVillage.com.

While many of us will be eating turkey on Thanksgiving Day, some people will be hunting turkeys in Elizabethtown - but not in the way you might think. They’ll be participating in the ECHOS Great Turkey Hunt, a 5K race that benefits Elizabethtown Community Housing and Outreach Services.
The race will kick off at 8:15 a.m. from Bear Creek Elementary School, 1459 Sheaffer Road, Elizabethtown, on Thursday, Nov. 25. It features participants searching for stuffed turkeys along the racecourse, said race director Grace Wells. “If they bring one back with them to the finish line, we’ll have a frozen turkey for them,” she stated. Prizes will be awarded for the top three male and female finishers in each age group. “We’re giving away plates with our Great Turkey Hunt logo on them as awards,” Grace noted. “Last year, we gave out forks, so this goes nicely with that.” Grace’s husband, Chuck, came up with the idea for the race a few years ago. “He wanted to give presents to kids in the area at Christmastime,” Grace said, noting that they were searching for an organization to support when the then-director of ECHOS spoke at their church. “We realized there was a place right here in town that we

Imagine four children ranging in age from kindergarten to third grade so enraptured by an hourlong presentation that they are surprised when it is over. What could grab and hold their attention? Why, music, of course, but not just any music. The four children were in a SWAN (Scaling Walls A Note at a Time) after-school class at Santa will greet children at Christmas at the Star Barn Village.

CLOSED THANKSGIVING DAY
The Christmas at Kraybill Craft Fair and Celebration offers a fun way to get into the spirit of the holidays and start checking off your shopping list. The event will be held at Kraybill Mennonite School, 598 Kraybill Church Road, Mount Joy, on Saturday, Nov. 20, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. “(People) can expect a fun, festive holiday atmosphere with impressive artistry, a wide gift selection and a chance to mingle with local artisans and neighbors,” said Trish Hopper, Parent Teacher Fellowship co-chair. “The fair features approximately 40 local artisans, crafters and vendors, many selling handmade items such as handturned wooden bowls and other wood carved items, jewelry, quilts, ornaments, home decor, local honey and children’s toys and books.” A variety of food will be available as well, including a baked goods stand and a concession stand run by Kraybill volunteers. “The concession stand is specifically raising funds for middle school extracurricular activities and will feature chicken corn soup and hot dogs from Gene Wenger’s Meats and pulled pork sandwiches from Acorn Farms,” Hopper noted. The event will also include horsedrawn wagon rides, featuring Granville Farms Clydesdales. Christmas music will be featured on the rides. “We will be selling gingerbread men cookie kits at the Kraybill benefit table,” Hopper said. “Each cookie kit contains an individually wrapped, six-inch gingerbread man cookie made by Zig’s Bakery in Lititz along with an icing packet and assorted candies for decorating. The kit is packaged in a gift bag ready to give or take home to decorate and eat.” The cookie kits sold out quickly last year, she emphasized. The Craft Fair and Celebration is a way for Kraybill to connect with the community, Hopper stated, while also supporting school activities. Along with proceeds from the concession stand, money raised from the Kraybill benefit table and vendor registrations will directly benefit the school. For more information on the Craft Fair and Celebration, search for “Christmas at Kraybill Craft and Vendor Fair” on Facebook.

“Messiah” Concert To Relocate
Wickersham Elementary, and the presentation was made by Lancaster Symphony Orchestra (LSO) concertmaster Luigi Mazzocchi and assistant concertmaster Nina Zubadi. The pair performed a Leclair sonata for two violins. Following the performance, the musicians spent time talking to the students and answering questions. SWAN founder and executive director Diana Vuolo noted that the students were “lost in learning.” “They had an engaging conversation. It was stimulating, instructive, and inspiring,” said Vuolo. “Experiencing music live has an impact emotionally. It was a really upbeat and happy time.” The presentation came about through a partnership between LSO and SWAN, with the visit being part of LSO’s Stand Partner Community Program, in which LSO makes a concerted effort to serve the community. SWAN is a free one-hour music program provided to School District of Lancaster (SDoL) students ages 6 to 18. The organization currently offers music lessons through several SDoL schools and at the Youth Intervention Center (YIC). SWAN is a nonprofit organization specifically serving children affected by parental incarceration. Since the children play ukuleles, it was natural for them to compare their instruments with the musicians’ vio-

lins. “(The students) saw that the violin has two holes to let the sound out and that both (instruments) have bridges, but they are different in shape and size. Both have four strings and a similar-shaped body,” shared Vuolo. “They were describing the instruments with good adjectives, and they created good conversation.” The visiting musicians then gave the students an opportunity to play with them. “One of the most magical moments was when the symphony musicians had our children start plucking two notes repeatedly (on their ukuleles), and then the musicians started to play a folk dance,” said Vuolo. “They really did sound beautiful together.” Vuolo is especially looking forward
to a return visit by Mazzocchi and Zubadi. “(LSO) will be sending the same musicians to the same classes multiple times throughout the year,” she explained, “so the school children will be able to create a relationship with them.” On Friday, Nov. 19, SWAN will take part in the Extraordinary Give (ExtraGive), hosted by the Lancaster County Community Foundation (LCCF). The 24-hour event, which is the the largest per-capita giving day in the nation, will begin at 12:00:01 a.m. on Nov. 19. Individuals may make donations using a credit card to participating nonprofits at www.extragive.org. Readers who would like to learn more about SWAN may visit www.swan4kids.org.

Library from pg 6
A funeral should be about how much you care, not how much it costs
library plans to reopen on Monday, Nov. 29, at 10 a.m. The closure will affect all library services, including passport acceptance services, IdentoGo fingerprinting services and Elizabethtown Coffee Company. Wireless internet access for downloading materials will remain available in the library’s parking lot. Materials may be returned in the outdoor book return. The construction project will address water incursion in the elevator pit. Water comes from a natural spring

under the building and penetrates the pit, creating a wet environment, which over time damages the equipment. The library has tried several solutions, none of which has completely solved the problem. The issue was noted again when the elevator was inspected. In August, the library renewed discussions with local contractors and engineers to find a more permanent solution that will both control the water incursion and move the water completely out of the pit in a manner that is environmentally responsible and that will keep the pit dry. One of
the consulting firms is a company that specializes in wet-environment elevators. A three-step solution was decided upon, and construction will begin on Nov. 22. The library will be closed during construction due to noise, dust and other aspects of the work, as well as the library’s inability at that time to move people or materials between floors. On Saturday, Nov. 27, the library will test the elevator to ensure it is fully serviceable. For more information, email information@etownpubliclibrary.org or call 717-367-7467.

For more than half a century, people have been peeking into the homes of Marietta residents at Christmastime. The 55th annual Marietta Candlelight Tour of Homes will continue this tradition on Sunday, Dec. 5, from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. “We have eight homeowners who have graciously opened their homes and decorated them in their own style for Christmas,” said Jason Spickler, who is co-chair of the tour along with Rebecca Baltozer. The tour is hosted by the Marietta Restoration Associates (MRA), who operate the Old Town Hall Museum, 3 W. Walnut St., and the Union Meeting House, 80 N. Waterford Ave., which will be part of the tour as well. A tree lighting and an appearance by Santa and Mrs. Claus will take place at the Old Town Hall Museum at 5 p.m. Throughout the day, the Union Meeting House will feature dance
demonstrations by World Dance Lancaster as well as Christmas music played on an 1847 Henry Knauff pipe organ. The site will also feature a Make-A-Wish Christmas tree. Spickler noted that this year’s tour includes at least three homes that have never been featured before. “We try to get a variety of homes,” he said. “That’s why people come back year after year, because they are not going to see the same things.” A search committee begins looking for homes to feature early in the year, he said, and although some homes have been featured in the tour more than once, the committee tries not to revisit a site for at least five years. Tourgoers will receive a booklet as their ticket, and it will include a map of the tour stops along with information about friends of the MRA businesses and organizations in town. The tour also features an option to travel to stops by bus. Participants

The team victory was not the Despite not needing many fifth only history made in the win as sets this year, this was just the Lady senior Sydney Stewart racked up 21 kills, pushing her over the 1,000-career kill mark. She sits at 1,016 with at least one more game. Kallee Locker matched those team high 21 kills while Stewart added 17 digs and five aces. Angela Costa-Ouimet joined the fun with 24 assists and four blocks while matching Stewart’s 17 digs. Liz Kerin chipped in with four blocks of her own. The Lady Bears ended up opposite Council Rock North in the PIAA4A bracket thanks to their 3-0 sweep over Wilson on November 6th in the District 3-4A third-fourth place affair. Hailey Oller and Liz Kerin rounded out the team leaders with nine digs for Oller and five blocks for Kerin. It took over a month of the season for the Lady Bears to suffer their first loss, a 3-2 setback to Hempfield in the L-L championship game on October 27th but only another eight days to pick-up a second loss. This one was also to Hempfield, and it came in the Bears third five set match of the season, Elizabethtown was up to the challenge, locking up that PIAA victory with a 15-11 final set advantage. The Lady Bears also opened the match with a win, coming out on top 25-23. “With traveling over two hours away, it was important for us to come out with success in the first set,” said Eberly. That success was short lived as the Lady Indians evened things up with a 25-16 set two win. “We captured the momentum in set one. Unfortunately, it did not carry over to set two,” said Eberly, “But this team is so resilient and has a short memory of sets that do not go our way.”

Oller dished out 14 assists with Kerin recording four blocks. Despite the fact that the Lady Bears are still in action, a few players picked up postseason hardware led by Stewart who landed on the Section Two first team while picking up section MVP honors as well. picking up post season honors. The boys’ soccer team received the section’s sportsmanship award while Dax Kelly made first team all-section. Two Bears, Hayden Florey and Jason Stark, enjoyed second-team all-star status while Mitchell Garber made the all-academic team. Three Lady Bears from the field hockey team also earned postseason honors with Hailey Mertz landing on the first team all-section squad.
Mikaela Condran and Piper Patrick enjoyed honorable mention status for the 2021 season. And we cannot forget the girls’ tennis team who saw head coach Brenda McBride earn Coach of the Year in the L-L as well as Section Two Player of the Year with Allison Evans. Evans also is a member of the All-League team and all section-team with Rylee Bender hoping on board the Section Two All-Star team.
