Cavod Schedules “Standing Firm” Shows Performances To Feature Dance Companies By Ann Mead Ash
“(The dance concert) is based on Ephesians 6,” said Jill Hertzog, artistic director of Cavod Dance Company. Hertzog went on to explain that the theme revolves around putting on the figurative armor of God to fight a war not against flesh and blood but against spiritual principalities. “Standing Firm,” a 90-minute dance presentation, will feature Cavod Dance Company and Cavod Dance Company II, with guest artist Stephanie Morales on Friday, Feb. 1, at 7 p.m. and Saturday, Feb. 2, at 2 and 7 p.m., at Cavod Theatre, 665 W. Main St., New Holland. Hertzog noted that attendees should expect an eclectic mix of themes presented predominantly in modern dance, with some dances based in ballet, along with several duets. “Some (numbers) are more abstract and some have a blatant storyline,” Hertzog said. The show will include more than 12 pieces, several based on the theme of moving from darkness Cavod Dance Company and Cavod Dance Company II will hold a dance concert titled to light and focusing on letting God lead the “Standing Firm” with guest artist Stephanie Morales on Feb. 1 and 2 at Cavod Theatre in See Standing Firm pg 2 New Holland.
Power Packs - Serving And Growing A Milestone Achievement Youth Center Director Earns Master’s Degree
By Ann Mead Ash
Back in 2004, Joan Espenshade noticed the large number of children waiting for breakfast outside a Lancaster city school on a Monday morning. Recognizing that these children may not be receiving adequate nutrition over the weekend, she founded Power Packs Project to help meet the nutritional needs of those children between Friday and Monday over the school year. The project sought to educate families as well by providing a recipe using low-cost ingredients that they could learn to replicate. Today, Power Packs Project has grown to help feed 1,600 families weekly 32 weeks per year by distributing ingredients for one low-cost meal in most Lancaster County school districts, but Jennifer Thompson, who became See Power Packs pg 9

Jennifer Thompson, who became executive director of Power Packs Project in 2018, holds a jar of peanut butter, one of many staples the program provides to area families in need. The program also provides recipes and low-cost ingredients needed to make them.
Carl Edwards, youth center director with CrossNet Ministries, 100 W. Franklin St., New Holland, received his master’s degree in leadership studies from Lancaster Bible College (LBC) on Dec. 14. Edwards previously earned a Bachelor of Arts in youth ministry from LBC. He has served as youth center director for CrossNet since July 2016. Both proud of and thankful for his achievement, Edwards, who currently makes his home in Leola, was quick to point out what he sees as the true worth of the degree. “(My courses provided) very practical leadership (techniques that were) ministry oriented,” See Youth Center Director pg 7
Carl Edwards, who graduated from Lancaster Bible College with his master’s degree on Dec. 14, received a message of congratulations from the staff at CrossNet Ministries, where he serves as youth center director.

stagnation and rejuvenation. One rags-to-riches tale will be danced to the song “Fast Car” by Tracy Chapman, and another dance will feature the popular Lauren Daigle song “You Say.” Savannah Huyard, artistic director of Cavod Dance Company II,
has choreographed a piece called “Skeletons.” “‘Skeletons’ is a straight-up testimonial piece,” said Huyard. “It hits the nail on the head about how we take our secrets and feel like we have to shove them in a closet.” Huyard then described how secrets are
destroyed when they are voluntarily revealed. “The Lord says when we expose those secrets to the light and ask for forgiveness … and let Him work through us, those secrets explode in the light and the darkness can no longer hold us.” Huyard described two other

- 8 oz. Dark chocolate, chopped - 1 cup heavy whipping cream (or chocolate chips) Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Grease a bundt pan with coconut oil and dust with cocoa powder. In a large bowl, mix together flour, cocoa, soda, salt, and pudding mix. Set aside. Beat together coconut oil and sugars until light and creamed. Beat in eggs and vanilla for 2 minutes. Add dry ingredients and buttermilk to wet ingredients. Stir in chocolate chips. Pour batter evenly into greased pan and spread evenly. Bake in oven at 350 degrees for 30 min. Then lower temperature to 325 and continue to bake for an additional 30-40 minutes until toothpick inserted in middle comes out mostly clean. Cool for 5 minutes in pan before inverting onto wire rack to cool completely. Ganache: Chop up chocolate bar into chunks (or use chocolate chips) and set in a bowl. Pour heavy whipping cream into a saucepan and heat on medium-high until heated but not boiling. Pour cream on top of chocolate and let set for 10 minutes. Resist the urge to stir at this point! After 10 minutes, whisk together the chocolate and cream until smooth and shiny. Let set for a couple minutes before pouring on top of cooled cake. (Make sure your cake is on a cake plate.) Let ganache cool until slightly hardened. Store in airtight container.

A local family will benefit from a fundraiser on Saturday, Jan. 19, from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. at Scratch Bakes, 3 W. Main St., Ephrata. One hundred percent of the day’s sales will be donated to Wesley “Wes” Myers, son of Tom and Samantha Kulfan Myers of Ephrata. The family will also receive all proceeds from a bydonation giveaway drawing that will be held during the fundraiser. Donations will also be accepted. In early 2018, 1-year-old Wes was diagnosed with neuroblastoma, a rare form of cancer. Now 2 years old, Wes has had approximately 10 surgeries so far, and more are being scheduled. He is also about to welcome a new little brother into the world. Proceeds of the fundraiser will go toward the cost of banking the new baby’s cord blood so it will be available if Wes needs it for his treatment. Children with cancerous solid tumors like neuroblastoma can receive cord blood transplants after chemotherapy or radiotherapy to accelerate healing and reduce recovery times.

The Library System of Lancaster County has announced the expansion of its Bookmobile service. During the past year, the Bookmobile significantly increased its service by adding an additional eight Head Start stops and four stops to other communities: Country Meadows Assisted Living Facility, Woodcrest Villa Retirement Village, Manor Heights (Mountville), and Pleasant Valley Amish Store (Kirkwood). Last year, the Bookmobile had 51 stops on its monthly schedule. Since the arrival of the new Bookmobile in the spring, the schedule now includes 63 stops to Head Start locations, preschools and senior communities. That is a 23.5 percent increase over 2017, and the library system continues to receive requests for service from Lancaster County communities. The library systems credits the expansion of the Bookmobile service not only to the new Bookmobile, but also to a new partnership between the library system and The Shalom Project. The partnership resulted in the placement of Kaitlin Abrahams as a new intern for the Bookmobile. Abrahams grew up in Kansas and recently graduated from EMU with a degree in English and writing studies. The Shalom Project is a oneyear voluntary service experience for recent college graduates. Participants live together in a house in Lancaster city; serve the community through full-time, professional internships; and participate in seminars focused on Christian spiritual formation and personal growth. The program covers all of the participants’ living expenses, including housing, transportation, and food. For more information about The Shalom Project, readers may visit http://shalomlancaster.org. vehicle. Commercial haulers are strongly advised to contact their local municipalities for their respective Christmas tree recycling locations. There is a suggested nominal donation for each tree. Donations will benefit the operation of the Dr. John Moss Native Tree Nursery in Central Park. Trees from the nursery are utilized throughout the county park system. Moss, a former professor at Franklin & Marshall College and a founding member of the Lancaster Environmental Action
Federation (LEAF), worked to promote the conservation of natural resources for the improvement of the environment of Lancaster County’s public parks and open spaces. According to park officials, residents drop off about 1,500 Christmas trees each year, which produce 22 tons of mulch. The mulch is ideal for acid-loving plants such as rhododendrons and azaleas, as well as many deciduous ornamental trees and shrubs that require slightly acidic soil conditions. The mulch will be
available to residents on a firstcome, first-served basis after Friday, Jan. 4, near the tree dropoff site. Persons desiring free mulch should bring a pitchfork or shovel and a bag or a trailer to transport it home. For more information about the Christmas tree mulching program, residents may call the park office at 717-299-8215 on weekdays from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. To learn more about the Lancaster County Park System, readers may visit www.lancastercounty parks.org.

The Hooley School of Irish Dance has announced that six dancers have qualified to compete in the CLRG Irish Dance World Championships in Greensboro, N.C., from Sunday to Friday, April 14 to 19, 2019. These six dance students and a junior team of eight dancers will compete against more than 4,000 dancers who have qualified at their regional championships. Competitors will come from Canada, Mexico, Ireland, Great Britain, mainland Europe, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, and the United States. The qualified solo dancers are Avery Winters, 10, Reamstown Elementary fourth-grader; Mia Kelly, 10, fourth-grader at Reidenbaugh Elementary; Olivia Raff, 13, eighth-grade student at Gerald Huesken Middle School School; Isabella Carper, 15, 10thgrade student at Conestoga Valley High School; David Irwin, 14, eighth-grader at Anchor Christian Academy; and Thomas Lane, 18, senior at Hershey High School. All of these dancers qualified for the World Championships at the regional Mid
Atlantic Oireachtas, held in Philadelphia from Nov. 22 to 25. At the World Championships, each dancer will be required to dance a hard shoe and a soft shoe round in the first heat. The top 50 percent of the dancers in each age group will then be recalled to dance their two rounds again the following day. Only the top half of the competitors from heat two will progress to the third and final round, which is a nontraditional set dance that showcases rhythm, footwork, and endurance. The ceili team consists of eight dancers plus one alternate. The team will perform a traditional group dance called a ceili, which is judged on uniformity as a team. Ceili dancing in Ireland began with group dances passed down through generations by tradition. They were eventually put into writing in the Irish dancing commission rule book in 1939. The Hooley team dancers, ages 10 and 11, are Abigail Kelly, Mia Kelly, Sophia MacCartney, Natalie Raff, Annabelle Rajkowski, Mia Rajkowski, Emily Stauffer, Makenna Urban, and Avery Winters.

Boy Scout Troop 48 and Cub Scout Pack 148 joined together to support a recent Scouting for Food project in the area. As part of the Scouting for Food program, Scouts left empty grocery bags on residents’ doors and returned on a following Saturday to pick up any items the residents donated. This year, the Scouts retrieved 450 bags totaling more than 2,400 pounds of grocery items. The Scouts donated the grocery items to CrossNet Ministries’ Food and Nutrition Center. said Edwards. “(The curriculum was) about how can you be a better follower of Jesus to be a better leader.” Completing his master’s degree was a goal for Edwards from the time he received his bachelor’s in 2010. He specifically chose leadership to dovetail with his focus on lifelong learning. “I want to expand my capacity for influence and caring for people,” said Edwards, who added that his work at CrossNet has complemented his continuing education. “I have been able to put (what I learned) into practice and implement strategies on a weekly basis,” said Edwards, who also presented mini workshops to other staff members upon completing each course. “(CrossNet has allowed) me to share … what I learned so we could all grow,” said Edwards, who presented the most salient points in staff meetings. Completing a master’s program while working and raising a family is never an easy task. “Through ministry jobs and having children, (taking classes) has been on and off,” said Edwards, who referred to himself as a full-time husband, father, and youth director. He is thankful to his wife, Mary, for her encouragement and motivation and to the team at CrossNet, especially executive director Meredith Dahl, whose support allowed him the flexibility to finish strong. Despite his busy schedule, Edwards has kept a focus on furthering CrossNet’s youth program while he was completing his degree. Working with his assistant director, Shanice Smith-Starr, Edwards has endeavored to increase the number of youth center volunteers to 30. “If you want to see a blessing, look up at that wall on your left,” said Edwards, pointing to sheets of paper listing names of volunteers. When Edwards arrived at CrossNet, there were only 15 regular volunteers. Now the number, which totals 30, includes some of his fellow LBC students, along with New Holland residents and a few young men who frequented the center as teenagers. The youth center is currently open four nights per week. Tuesday night is guys’ night and Thursday is girls’ night, featuring special roundtable discussions, which about 25 students attend. Wednesday and Friday nights are open door nights, when the center is open to ELANCO School District students in sixth through 12th grades from 6 to 8 p.m. Up to 60 students generally gather on those nights for a hot meal in a safe place where they are surrounded by caring adults. A recent all-nighter attracted up to 65 students, who took part from 9:30 p.m. on Nov. 30 to 6 a.m. on Dec. 1. The group spent four hours locked in at a family fun center near Reading where students took part in a variety of activities. “I am still trying to recover from the lack of sleep,” said Edwards with a laugh. Edwards noted that he enjoys the chance to step beyond his youth center director role to take part in community relations and fundraising. “I love going out to share (about CrossNet),” said Edwards. “I love what our ministry does being able to offer help and hope. I came here during this amazing time when God is just continuing to bless this ministry … and I love it.” More information about CrossNet Ministries may be found at https://elanco cross.org.

executive director in May, has identified several challenges Power Packs faces going forward. Among these are the need for volunteers, the need to add food sourcing resources, and the ability to provide nutritious food that can be utilized by families from a variety of cultural backgrounds. Volunteers are needed both at the Power Packs warehouse, located on Walnut Street in Lancaster, and at the schools and other sites where food is distributed. “We need volunteer drivers to deliver food to schools, and we need volunteers at the schools for packing,” said Thompson, who noted that because of a rotating schedule, volunteers can serve as little as once a month. She added that certain volunteer positions can be physically demanding. Volunteers who work at the warehouse or drive vans should be agile and able to lift up to 40 pounds. At the school sites, packing the bags is not as physically demanding. Thompson said that she has special appreciation for the organization’s volunteer base. “We are trying to grow our volunteer base and learn from the volunteers who have been with us for many years,” she stated. Finding food that is nutritious, rather than processed or high in sugars, is always a challenge for Power Packs, according to Thompson. “We would love to have more connections for food sourcing,” said Thompson, who noted that tortilla shells and fresh fruits and vegetables like broccoli, green peppers, bananas, grapes, and oranges are on her wish list. Thompson said that the organization is aware of the ethnic and cultural diversity of the population it serves and that steps are being taken to meet those specific needs. “We are learning about those families and what they eat,” she said. “We have to source foods that are different. We need rice, and we need foods that are kosher (or) if (a family doesn’t) eat meat, how do we (meet) their (nutritional) needs with foods they will eat? We want to make sure we send home food families will recognize and try to cook and eat.” In addition to working with school social workers to learn how to better educate and empower families, Power Packs has partnered with a team at Georgetown University for a research project focused on the importance of nutrition in early childhood development. “We are looking forward to having our program evaluated and really learning,” said Thompson. Thompson comes to the position with experience in both food service and directing nonprofit organizations. She oversaw St. Joseph’s Children’s Health Foundation and also worked at St. Joseph Medical Center in Towson, Md. During that time, she ran a catering service and sold gourmet soups. In 2010, she realized her dream of owning a café in Lancaster, a place she called “homey and comfortable” that was open for nearly five years. Power Packs’ signature fundraiser is a spring Stay-at-Home Gala, which encourages families to stay home and donate the funds they would have used to attend an event. This year, the organization took part in the Extraordinary Give in November, ranking in the top 25 recipients by raising nearly $75,000. Power Packs welcomes both online and traditional donations year-round. Readers who would like to learn more about the program or sign up to volunteer may visit the organization’s redesigned website at www.powerpacks project.org.

The courses are Mah-Jongg, Astronomy, The Altered Book and Collage, Digital Photography, Stress Resilience for Great Health and Happiness, Nature Journaling, Basic Spanish, Journey to Fitness, Genealogy, Writers on the Storm, Conversational French, Feldenkrais: Move With Great Ease, and A
Critical History of Journalism: Real News, Fake News, and Tweets. The instructors for these courses are retired university faculty members. This spring will be the first time that Writers on the Storm will be offered through the MiLLI program. The expressive writing program was originally designed for veterans with readjustment issues. The course will be instructed by Scott Hower, a Vietnam veteran, and Annie Ginder, a poet and certified Journal to the Self instructor. Both are expanding their veteran-focused expressive writing workshop to the civilian community.
Writers on the Storm is free to all veterans, and the fees for all other courses will be discounted by 10 percent for all veterans. The MiLLI program is managed by the assistant dean of the college of graduate studies and adult learning as well as a graduate student intern. The intern, Randall Haines, is a veteran of the Pennsylvania Army National Guard and Operation Iraqi Freedom. The cost of each course ranges. Registration is available at www.millersville.edu/milli. For more details or registration, readers may contact Haines at rchaines@millersville.edu or 717-871-7171.

The Lancaster County Christian School (LCCS) Class of 2019 recently returned from a short-term mission trip to Peru. From Nov. 3 to 11, the students served alongside the missionaries and staff of Kids Alive International, both in the capital city of Lima and in the jungle city of Pucallpa. During their time in Peru, the students participated in many typical mission trip activities, such as work projects and children’s ministry. Furthermore, the senior mission trip experience included opportunities for learning, fellowship, and encouragement. With this in mind, the seniors worked to prepare their hearts and minds
in the months leading up to this trip. LCCS, 2390 New Holland Pike, Lancaster, is governed by a board of directors and managed by the head of school and administrative team. The school offers a Christ-centered and interdenominational curriculum for area children in preschool through 12th grade. Pictured on front: Lancaster County Christian School’s Class of 2019 recently returned from a short-term mission trip to Peru, where they took part in work projects and children’s ministry.
