Few sights in nature can compare to a pristine blanket of white snow covering the countryside. Unfortunately, a wonderland of snow conceals dangers related to slips and falls, shoveling, and even overdoing winter sports. The good news is that with some preparation many injuries may be avoided.
Zachary Wagner, a physical therapist in the rehabilitation wing at Fairmount in Ephrata sees a variety of injuries during the winter months. “The biggest thing is falls,” said Wagner, who noted that hip and femoral fractures are common as are rotator cuff and back issues related to shoveling.
To help prevent injuries, Wagner recommends a year-round regimen to increase strength, balance, and flexibility. Both aerobic and endurance exercises are good choices, and stretching is always recommended. “Stretching is a big thing, especially in winter,” said
Wagner. “When it’s cold out, muscles tend to tighten up.” So loosening up for sports activities or tasks like shoveling can make a difference. “If you’re not stretching and you’re not used to strenuous activity, you put yourself at risk for strain or tendonitis,”
Wagner noted.
Footwear that is appropriate for the weather is another concern. Wagner recommends nonslip, nonskid shoes with rubber soles that are not too worn and that fit well. Arch support may be necessary to help some improve their gait and avoid falls. Dressing for the weather means layering warm clothing and wearing gloves. This is especially important for those who participate in winter sports and anticipate being outside for extended periods of time.
Shoveling is a necessity for many, but it is also an activity that can lead to several types of injuries. When shoveling, Wagner said to watch your posture. “Use your
knees and hips,” he advised. “Keep your back straight, and don’t lift more than you can handle.” Because cold weather can increase chances of injury, avoid sudden twists. Instead, take extra steps to move snow. “Listen to your body,” cautioned Wagner, who recommended breaks to warm up every 10 to 15 minutes.
Another precaution, which is especially important for seniors, is keeping up to date on physicals and eye examinations to be sure prescription medications and eyewear are correct. Be aware that over-thecounter cold and flu remedies can cause drowsiness and increase chances of stumbling. It is not only seniors who need to be more careful during the harsher months. Wagner noted, “(Winter) injuries can happen to anyone.”
Fairmount is a nonprofit retirement community located on two adjoining campuses in Ephrata. Readers who would like to know more about the organization may visit https://fairmounthomes.org.

Lancaster residents Leslie Bustard of Square Halo Books looks toward the second “Ordinary Saints - Creativity, Collaboration, and Community” conference with a passion for giving attendees a chance to learn and be challenged. “I love to bring people together to offer each other goodness and beauty and an enjoyable experience,” said Leslie. “I also love to give artmakers and teachers a chance to share their expertise so they can give (to others).” See Square Halo Books pg 5
Alisa Sholly, who has participated in No Longer Alone Ministries family support group meetings for about a decade is grateful for the experience. “As the name says, I no longer feel alone in knowing how to deal with mental health concerns involving loved ones,” said Sholly. “I receive valuable information on mental health topics, a listening ear from others that can understand, and prayer.”
Michele Sipel, director of InHome Services with Landis at Home a division of Landis Communities, is well attuned with the mission of
the support group, which meets monthly at Landis Homes. Sipel serves as a liaison for the group, which provides a safe place to open up for those who have a loved one living with mental illness. “It’s a different world, and unless you live it, you don’t know (what it’s like),” said Sipel. “It’s one of those subjects where there’s a lot of stigma, but it is so important.”
Meetings are held on the fourth Sunday of each month. The next support group meeting will be held via Zoom on Sunday, Jan. 22, from 3 to 5 p.m. The January meeting will include a video by Dr. Matthew Stanford, PhD, followed by discussion.

More than 37 vendors will feature items such as crafts, toys, glass and Pyrex items, paper products, books, Star
Wars paraphernalia, books, antiques, team sports items, collectibles, tools, and traditional flea market bargains. Refreshments will also be available for purchase.
There is no admission charge. Ample parking is available at the rear of the building. Proceeds will support the maintenance of the War Memorial Building. For more information, contact ULTWMA at 717-656-6154 or ultwma@gmail.com.
Church To Offer Community Meal
Weaverland Anabaptist Faith Community, 210 Weaverland Valley Road, East Earl, will host a community meal on Wednesday, Jan. 11, in the fellowship
hall. A hot meal will be provided at 5:30 p.m. for individuals and families.
For more information, call the church at 717-445-6348.
The support group was an offshoot of No Longer Alone Ministries (NLAM), which functioned in Lancaster from 1991 to 2019. When NLAM closed its doors, a peer support group and the family support group overseen by the ministries were transferred to local entities. The peer support group, called Paths to Discovery, became part of Faith Friendship Ministries, and the family support group transferred to Landis, where several of the founding members live.
Landis offered personnel with the necessary expertise to help organize the group as well. Sipel noted that Evon Bergey, vice president of community initiatives with Landis Homes, is from a behavioral health background and added that she and other organizers work with Bob
Musser, a licensed social worker who worked with NLAM, to plan meetings, line up speakers, and facilitate meetings. The group began meeting at Landis Homes in January of 2020. After the advent of COVID-19 restrictions, the group met virtually.
In 2023, January, February, and March meetings will be held via Zoom so that inclement weather will not be a deterrent. The group plans to meet virtually once each quarter so that those who cannot come to Landis Homes may attend.
Among the past topics that were covered at meetings are innovations in treatment, anxiety and obsessive-compulsive disorder, overcoming grief, mental health and the Bible, and bringing healing to senior care.
Sipel said the group provides an atmosphere of caring and acceptance. “You get to know each other, so people feel comfortable being vulnerable. It is very therapeutic to be able to speak about what you’re going through with others who have lived it and understand.”
Sholly noted that NLAM has provided her with optimism. “It is a place to find hope when things seem hopeless,” she said. “I encourage anyone who is struggling or knows someone that is struggling with mental health issues to attend. It has been a Godsend for me and my family.”
To register for the January Zoom meeting, contact 717381-3599 or jalbright@ landis.org by noon on Friday, Jan. 20.

This year’s conference will once again be held at The Trust Performing Arts Center, 37 N. Market St., Lancaster, with registration starting at noon on Friday, Feb. 17, 2023. The conference will run into Friday evening and resume on Saturday, Feb. 18, ending at about 10 p.m. Poet Malcolm Guite, author of “Lifting the Veil,” will be the keynote speaker. Tickets, which are necessary to attend, may be purchased at www.squarehalobooks.com/ conferences#/2023-conference. Organizers anticipate that tickets will be available through the end of January.
This year’s conference celebrates the 25th anniversary of Square Halo Books, a publish-
ing house Leslie was involved in founding along with her husband, Ned, and Alan and Diane Bauer, who are located in Baltimore. All this year’s speakers have written for Square Halo, which focuses on “publishing works that present contextually sensitive biblical studies … with the goal of providing materials for encouraging and equipping the saints.”
“We are all about giving a platform to people who don’t have one,” said Leslie. The book “Ordinary Saints: Living Everyday Life to the Glory of God” was published in celebration of Square Halo’s anniversary.
This year, special Friday afternoon activities have been added to the event at no charge. Presentations will be made by Tom Becker of the Row House forum and author Lisa Smith, a songwriters circle will be held with Matt Wheeler, and Friday night’s featured speaker will be art historian Elissa Yukiko Weichbrodt.
On Saturday, a number of speakers will be featured. “The author Sean Smucker and Christie Purifoy will be with us,” said Leslie, who added that there will be an emphasis on speakers from the surrounding area. “Christine Perrin, a professor at Messiah University, will
speak (along with) Dan Spanjer, a historian, who is now principal at Veritas Academy,” she added. Lancaster Bible College professor Shanika Churchville will speak on “Ordinary Scholars: Justice in the Writing Classroom.” Other activities will include a round table reading of “Babette’s Feast” led by theater director Bonnie Bosso, a tea and poetry reading, a pop-up printing session, and a pub night.
Entertainment will be featured as well. “Our concert (artist) is a band called The Arcadian Wild, and they are a bluegrass band,” Leslie noted. “We feed people breakfast
and lunch and a lot of snacks from local places,” she added.
Following the difficulties of COVID-19 restrictions the last few years, Leslie hopes to see attendees have a chance to gather and experience joy. “My goal is that people are refreshed,” she said. “I want to offer a gift. I envision us bringing people together looking at all of life before God and how it can be glorifying.”

Tyson Foods is helping team members at the company’s New Holland facility address transportation barriers through a partnership with Commute with Enterprise. The growing ride-share program, which provides team members with a lowcost option to commute to work, launched in November.
The Tyson Foods New Holland location is one of 28 company facilities participating in the program, which began last year, and is helping more than 1,000 team members and saving an estimated 4 million commuter miles. Enterprise works with each location to develop a vanpooling plan, which involves grouping employees based on where they live and their work shifts.
Commute with Enterprise provided the first Tyson Foods New Holland driver, Angel Pineda, with a minivan, along with covering the costs of any needed maintenance, fuel and insurance. Six additional Tyson Foods team members and riders also save money by participating.
Demand for the program is growing. The Tyson Foods New Holland facility is already awaiting another vehicle for a second vanpool driver.
The transportation programs are subsidized by Tyson Foods in varying capacities depending on location and need. There are other employee incentives as well. Tyson Foods has invested more than $500 million in wage increases and bonuses for frontline workers over the past year. In addition, it is piloting subsidized and onsite child care, as well as seven near-site health centers.
Along with providing legal and citizenship support for immigrant team members, the company recently announced it is providing free education assistance for all U.S. team members. An increasing number of Tyson Foods production facilities are also offering more flexible work schedules for frontline workers.

Blue Ridge made it easy for community members to donate money through a secure website using PayPal or a debit/credit card. Every dollar raised for KMF’s Stockings For Soldiers helped fund the packing of holiday stockings filled with food, hygiene products, holiday decorations, Christmas cards and other requested items, according to Cindy Mellinger, Blue Ridge marketing/community relations coordinator and the Stockings For Soldiers central Pennsylvania project coordinator.
