Grants Will Help FFA Member Remodel Courtyard By Ann Mead Ash
Jack McCarty, a sophomore at Garden Spot High School (GSHS) and a Grassland FFA member, has chosen what might be considered an ambitious project to fulfill his FFA Supervised Agricultural Education (SAE) requirement. McCarty is working to restore the GSHS enclosed courtyard and turn it into an area that offers green space and an educational resource to his fellow students. Katherine Ranck, GSHS agricultural science teacher and Grassland FFA adviser, believes in McCarty. “Jack has a serving heart,” said Ranck of McCarty, who is also a member of Boy Scout Troop 48 in New Holland. Members of the National FFA Organization have shown faith by investing
a $1,000 grant in McCarty’s project. McCarty, who submitted a comprehensive report on the project to apply for the grant, has also been awarded a state grant. McCarty’s application for the national grant was selected from more than 2,100 applications nationwide. On the state level, McCarty was one of 10 students to receive a grant of more than 40 who applied. The courtyard McCarty seeks to restore has languished since the death of teacher Tracy Marchini in 2014. According to Ranck, school staff maintained the gardens and the fish pond, but the landscaping class that Marchini taught is no longer offered, so students were not involved with the upkeep of the area. That changed when McCarty approached Ranck about restoring the courtyard. See FFA Member pg 5

Making Disciples In Uganda Pastor Earns Doctorate Through LBC
By Dayna M. Reidenouer By Ann Mead Ash
“The only apple I remember from my childhood was the Red Delicious someone gave me at Halloween. I felt ripped off that they didn’t give me candy,” recalled author and Maine apple historian John Bunker. “(At that time), I thought apples came in only red and green.” After Bunker grew up, graduated from college, and moved to Super Chilly Farm in Palermo, Maine, he discovered apple trees, specifically those ancient specimens that grow in backyards and in far-off fields throughout rural Maine. Appreciating a potential source of free food and seeing as no one did anything with See Apple Expert pg 2
John Bunker, who specializes in the heirloom apples of Maine, will be the featured speaker at the annual Backyard Fruit Growers winter meeting on Jan. 19 at the Farm and Home Center.
There are many quotes exhorting people to be part of something bigger than themselves. Richmond Wandera, a native of Kampala, Uganda, has lived them. On Dec. 14, 2018, Wandera graduated from Lancaster Bible College (LBC) with a Doctor of Philosophy in leadership, with the goal of taking what he has learned back to his home country to spread knowledge among pastors there. “Uganda has 40 million people and 85,000 pastors, but 70 percent of (the pastors have) had no training,” said Wandera. “(Yet) they are forced to explain complex theology.” Wandera added that theological information is not easily available. Wandera realized that a biblical solution to the problem existed. “Jesus identified a few leaders See LBC Student pg 6
Richmond Wandera stands in the lobby of the Good Shepherd Chapel of Lancaster Bible College, where he graduated with his Doctor of Philosophy in leadership on Dec. 14, 2018. Wandera is the founder of a nonprofit called Pastors Discipleship Network and the recipient of LBC’s Wesley K. Stafford Leadership Development Scholarship.

Thus began a lifetime of fascination with the heirloom apples of Maine. Bunker has spent nearly five decades on Super Chilly Farm, developing an off-the-grid homestead and community-supported agriculture program. He has collected information about as many of the different varieties of apples growing in Maine as possible, and in 1984, he started Fedco Trees to encourage others to plant trees and to fund his travels. Bunker writes about his tree-tracking adventures in the Fedco Trees catalog, and he has published a book, “Not Far From the Tree: A Brief History of the Apples and the Orchards of Palermo, Maine.” In addition to scouring Maine, Bunker has visited old orchards in Europe, and he has journeyed to Kazakhstan, which is the home of the ancestors of the modern apple. “Most of the Europeans who came here had apple orchards,” Bunker remarked. “Johnny Appleseed was a real person. Every seed that he planted was genetically unique. From those millions of seedlings that were planted in the United States (by Appleseed and other Europeans), they would graft (preferred types) onto a root stock to give to their neighbor or have a second one. Around the Civil War, we had about 25,000 varieties of apples.” Bunker noted that commercial fruit growers have focused on apples ideal for eating raw, so many of those varieties have either died out or become rare, and folks are missing out. “There are so many uses for apples: cooked, baked, in sauce, or cider,” Bunker said. “I eat apples daily. I make sauce every morning. The apple (variety) doesn’t look pretty, but it stores well in the cold cellar, and it doesn’t need any spices or sugar. But if you ate (that apple variety) raw, it would be awful.” Bunker will discuss apples, particularly heirloom varieties, at the annual Backyard Fruit Growers winter meeting on Saturday, Jan. 19. The event will run from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Farm and Home Center, 1383 Arcadia Road, Lancaster, and the doors will open at 9:15 a.m. Admission will be free of charge, but donations will be accepted. Attendees may bring lunch or purchase it at the FFA event held next door. Additionally, empty Mason bee tubes will be available during the lunch break. While Bunker will be the primary speaker at the event, Tim Elkner will also be on hand to discuss the spotted lanternfly invasion and the current state of the quarantine. For more information about the meeting, readers may call Backyard Fruit Growers vice president Andrew Weidman at 717-813-1874 or visit www.byfg.org.

The factors judged included quality of art, venue setting and ambiance, affordability/wide price range, familyfriendly/children’s activities, number of exhibitors, location, accessibility, parking, variety of media, and food and music. The America’s Best Art Fairs Awards are based on online voting by art fair patrons, collectors, organizers, and artists, both regionally and nationally. The national survey of art fairs and festivals is designed to recognize achievement in art fair event production and promote the cultural importance of fine art events across America. All proceeds from the art festival fund the Summer Music Series each year. To learn more, readers may visit www.longspark.org.

FFA Member from pg 1 “Jack took Agriculture 1,” said Ranck. “This is a neat way for him to contribute to the school as well as do something environmental involving plant sciences,” Ranck said, noting that environmental science is a passion of McCarty. For McCarty, the project represented a chance to do something unique. “It’s a different type of SAE,” said McCarty, who had completed a rabbit project previously. “I was looking to expand (the uses of the courtyard) and make our (school) community a better place. I enjoy doing that.” So far, McCarty has removed vegetation and structures from the 40-by-72-foot area, and the courtyard has been mulched for the winter. When he begins working on the project again in the spring, he will have a multitude of tasks to complete. “In the spring, I will put in new vegetation,” said McCarty, who noted that adding raised beds is also part of the plan. “The special education classes will use (the raised beds) for gardens,” said McCarty. “We will also be looking to create outdoor classroom space so teachers can utilize it for plant and environmental science classes.” Ranck added that among the goals are adding new picnic tables, replacing rocks, and including types of vegetation the fish can feed on and succulents in the area of the waterfall. “ We also might add an educational aspect with plates describing the (flora and fish). We have a middle school FFA that may be incorporated in that (part of the project),” said Ranck. Looking forward, McCarty and Ranck believe the funds from the grants should cover most of the expenses of the project. “According to (Jack’s) planned budget it should be enough,” Ranck said, noting that McCarty plans to raise more than the amount he anticipates needing. The National FFA Foundation helps raise funds for grants like the one McCarty received by building partnerships with industry, education, government, other foundations, and individuals. The National FFA Organization is a national youth organization, active in all 50 states, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. The organization seeks to make a positive difference in the lives of students by helping to develop their potential through agricultural education. Grassland FFA, the New Holland chapter of the national organization, has been active in the area for more than 50 years. LBC Student from pg 1 and went deep with (teaching) them and then sent them out to multiply themselves,” said Wandera. “My mantra is ‘Train one to reach many.’” This biblical solution led Wandera to found a nonprofit called Pastors Discipleship Network after completing a year at Moody Bible Institute in Chicago in 2008. Pastors are now being trained through LBC’s blended
program, which mixes online learning with regular visits to the campus. The program was introduced at LBC in 2016 following a visit to Uganda by LBC president Dr. Peter Teague. Wandera noted that pastors carefully selected for character, practice, and giftedness have been offered the opportunity to earn a Master of Arts in ministry. To date, 40 students have graduated. Twenty
more are due to graduate in June. Each pastor is charged with sharing what he or she has learned with one pastor in Africa per year for the next five years. The inspiration for the program had its roots in Wandera’s own story. The third of six children, Wandera shared that he and his family witnessed his father’s murder in 1990. “It changed our entire family,” said Wandera, whose family then moved to Naguru, a slum in Kampala. “It’s called a forgotten community. There is very little hope there,” said Wandera. In 1991, hope arrived in the
form of sponsorship through Compassion International. Wandera and one of his sisters were sponsored and began attending the church through which that sponsorship was extended. Four years later, Wandera came to understand the Gospel. Noting that his family came from a traditional African background, Wandera said that the story of Joseph resonated with him. Later his sister and his mother made decisions for Christ as well. Eventually his whole family became part of the fold. Wandera finished high school in 2000, and in 2004 he graduated

A discussion with Steve Wilson, a worker from Compassion International, brought him back to the ministry. He received the first Wesley K. Stafford scholarship to the Moody Bible Institute, with the goal of taking back what he learned to pastors in Africa. Wandera reached that goal only to find that many of the pastors needed leadership training as well as theological knowledge. That need led to him to LBC, where he began working toward his doctorate as a recipient of LBC’s Wesley K. Stafford Leadership Development Scholarship, established in 2013.

Distraught, Wandera returned to working in accounting.

The Chesapeake Bay Foundation (CBF) has named Brenda Sieglitz to manage the Keystone 10 Million Trees Partnership, one of Pennsylvania’s efforts to restore and protect its rivers and streams by planting 10 million trees by the end of 2025. The Keystone 10 Million Trees Partnership is a collaborative effort, coordinated by CBF, of national, regional, state, and local agencies, conservation organizations, watershed groups, conservancies, outdoors enthusiasts, businesses, and individuals dedicated to planting trees to improve the condition of Pennsylvania waters. Trees clean and protect waterways, including drinking water sources, by filtering and absorbing polluted runoff, stabilizing stream banks, and improving soil quality. Simultaneously, they help cleanse the air of harmful contaminants and beautify communities. As the Keystone 10 Million Trees Partnership manager, Sieglitz will help ensure the success of the Partnership by synchronizing creative strategies that serve and diversify the partners, funders, agencies, and other priority audiences. Working closely with CBF’s Making History Campaign team, Sieglitz will also serve as the key internal point person to ensure the Partnership activities are coordinated and communicated. For more than a decade, Sieglitz worked in the private sector, where she has focused on project management, business development initiatives, sales, and marketing. During that time, she created and led multiple marketing and other events centered on public-private partnerships, including leading the development and launch for a biodegradable food service disposables line in the Mid-Atlantic region. She resides in Mount Joy and is co-chair of Lancaster County Conservancy’s Riverlands Trail Festival. She has held leadership and mentor roles with the Susquehanna Valley Chamber of Commerce, the Lancaster County Chamber of Commerce, Team Sarcoma Keepin’ it Kevin, and the National Parks Service. She is also a certified Pennsylvania Master Naturalist.

Fraktur Classes from pg 1 The Lancaster Mennonite Historical Society (LMHS), 2215 Millstream Road, Lancaster, will offer two classes focused on fraktur, both of which will be taught by local artist Emily Smucker-Beidler. Fraktur, a fractured calligraphy surrounded by birds, swirls, and flowers, has
evolved to become a distinctly American folk art. The first class, “Fraktur Introduction,” will be held on Saturday, Feb. 2, from 9 a.m. to noon. Participants will learn how to create fraktur, rendering traditional motifs in ink before painting them in watercolor. By the

end of the class, each participant will have his or her own small work of fraktur to take home. Smucker-Beidler will also give a presentation on the history of fraktur, looking at the three distinct styles from southeastern Pennsylvania. A starter kit containing the basic supplies is included with the class. Separate costs have been set for LMHS members and for nonmembers. The deadline for registration is Friday, Jan. 25. The second class, “The Illuminated Letter,” will take place on Saturday, March 16, from 9 a.m. to noon. It will pick up where the first class left off, but participants do not need to have taken the first class. It will focus on learning lettering and calligraphy within the context and history of fraktur. Participants will learn how to use a nib pen and India ink and learn both traditional techniques and modern adaptations. The registration cost, which will be discounted for LMHS members, includes all materials required, including paper, handouts, tracing paper,

pencils, and uncoated, machinefinished paperboard. The deadline for registration is Friday, March 8. The per-session registration fee is due by Jan. 25 for the Feb. 2 class and by March 8 for the March 16 class. To register, readers may call the LMHS at 717-393-9745 or visit www.lmhs.org. State Cultural and Historical Support Grants are now available for qualified museums and official county historical societies. This is the sixth year that the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission (PMHC) has worked with the state legislature to provide funding for museums through the grant program. A total of $2 million was included in the 2018-19 state budget for the initiative. The Cultural and Historical Support Grant program is restricted to eligible organizations that are not supported by other state agency funding programs, including museums located in Pennsylvania with annual operating budgets exceeding $100,000 and at least one full-time professional staff person. Some museums are not eligible if they are eligible for grant support from other state agencies. The maximum award for a museum is $65,000. In addition, official county historical societies are eligible to apply. The awards for Official County Historical Societies range from $2,500 to $4,000. Applicants must meet organizational eligibility requirements. Awards are based on a calculation that uses the operating budget from the most recently completed fiscal year. Applications must be received by Friday, Jan. 25. All PHMC grant applications are now submitted on the commonwealth’s Single Application for Assistance system at www.esa.dced.state.pa.us. Eligibility information and grant guidelines can be found at www.phmc.pa.gov.

Columbia Crossing River Trails Center, 41 Walnut St., Columbia, invites to public to view “Ice Harvesting Along the Susquehanna,” an immersive exhibit about the ice harvesting industry. Prior to refrigeration, homes and commercial businesses required ice to keep food cold. A worldwide industry was created to collect ice from frozen rivers, ponds, and lakes and ship it by wagon and rail to be sold. Pennsylvania ranked third in the nation for ice production behind only Maine and New York. Locally, Columbia had at least three ice houses that kept residents supplied with ice for their homes. Deliveries of ice were brought by the “ice man” to homes on a regular basis. The exhibit follows the ice from the river to the kitchen. It features a wide variety of objects, including ice harvesting tools such as drills, saws, and plows. Antique ice boxes, ice shavers, ice crushers, and other memorabilia

Garden Spot Battles Cocalico, Falls in Overtime by Ara Grigorian
The Section Three boys’ basketball game between Garden Spot and Cocalico turned into an overtime thriller in New Holland on Tuesday night. The Eagles and Spartans played evenly through regulation, looking up at a 48-48 scoreboard at the final buzzer. In overtime, the Spartans held the Eagles to only four points, but it was enough for Cocalico to edge Garden Spot 52-50. The top scorers in the game were Peyton Stetter of Cocalico, who poured in 24 points, mostly off the six three-point field goals he made, and Kentae Nunn of Garden Spot, who finished with 23. The Spartans fell to 4-2 in the Lancaster-Lebanon League (6-5 overall) while the Eagles (6-5) evened their
league mark at 3-3. One aspect of the Spartans’ game that was a factor in a close contest like this was foul shooting. Spot connected on just 11 of 21. The Eagles were 7-of-12. Garden Spot overcame an early deficit but did go into the locker room at halftime trailing 22-20. The two teams were tied at the final buzzers of the third and of course fourth periods. Andrew Zentner finished with 11 points, hitting a pair of treys on the night. Jon Morales added six more points. Connor Mack provided 17 points for the Eagles. Garden Spot was coming off a convincing win the previous week - a Friday night barrage of points in which Nunn scored 34 in an 81-58 win at Solanco. Morales (14) and
Jesse Martin, who nailed a pair of treys and tallied 16, also reached double figures. Zentner added eight points. WRESTLING In a close battle with league rival Donegal, the Garden Spot wrestling team pulled off a 41-35 win on Wednesday night. “I think both teams knew it was going to be a very close match that would come down to a couple of toss-up matches and who would secure more bonus points,” said head coach Adam Bunting. And the extra points did come for Garden Spot in a flurry of victories down the stretch. Following a forfeit

at the 220-pound weight class, which went in favor of Spartan sophomore Dustin Swanson, Charles Martin earned a first-period pin in the heavyweight match, cutting the Indians’ lead to 29-24. The pin by Donegal’s Ethan Herr (106) gave the Indians a 35-24 advantage, but back came the Spartans. “At 106, Jeremy Schilling opened up a 2-0 lead going into the second period on returning league champion Ethan Herr,” explained Bunting. “Herr then reversed Schilling and pinned him in an arm bar.” Mason Casey, earned a pin at 113; Garrett Gehr, notched a technical fall at 120, winning by a 21-6 score;
Josh Groff, pinned Cooper Rollison in 34 seconds at the 126 bout. “With three matches left, Mason Casey got us back on track with a huge pin at 113,” Bunting remarked. “Freshman standout Garrett Gehr followed with a technical to tie the match at 35 all. “It came down to team leader Josh Groff to clinch the victory,” continued the coach. “He wasted no time planting Rollison in 38 seconds.” The match began at the 132-pound weight class with Donegal’s Dylan Bowers earning a pin. Aaron Martin (138) returned the favor with a pin for Spot. The Indians then pulled ahead with
a close 6-4 win by Joseph Fox, topping Alan Perez at 145 and major decisions at 152 and 160. Will Small’s pin at 170 and another by Cael Rapp at 182 made it 29-6 Donegal. That set the table for Garden Spot winning four of the final five bouts. Bunting also referenced two of the losses and how his wrestlers losing only by a decision rather than a major or technical helped in the long run. “This was a total team win,” Bunting added. “I’m proud of the guys scrapping to save team points wherever we could. Alan Perez and Drew Finkey [12-2 loss at 160] saved important points by fighting out of predicaments that could have put the

a game-high 18, which included three treys. On Thursday the Spartans again came up short when they dropped a 6252 decision to host Manheim Central. The Spartans got off to a good start, building a 17-14 lead through the first quarter, but the Barons took command of the game with an 18-8 run in the second period to lead 32-25 at the break and then finished off the 10point win with 17-15 and 13-12 advantages in the third and fourth quarters. Fisher took scoring honors in the contest with 27 points on seven baskets and four three-pointers. AIR RIFLE Governor Mifflin’s air rifle team had three shooters finish with a score of 99. Garden Spot had three shooters finish with a score of 98. Hence, the Mustangs edged the Spartans by a 492-486 score on Thursday. Alex O’Neill, Evan Emch and Braden Reel reeled off 98’s while Jared Weaver scored 97 on the day. Aaron Good recorded a score of 95. Natalie Jones, Austin Maple and Sydney Machion each shot a 99 for
Mifflin. Garden Spot fell to 0-7 on the year. Earlier in the week, the Spartans lost another close one, this time a 494-488 loss at Elizabethtown on Tuesday. Wever, Lani Duncan and Karlee Hartman shot 98’s for the Spartans while Reel and Good each recorded a score of 97. Matt Risbon had a perfect game, shooting 100 for E-town. BOWLING Hot on the heels of Cocalico in the Section Three standings, Garden Spot’s bowling team improved to 30-5 with a 7-0 defeat of Columbia on Tuesday at Clearview Lanes. Meanwhile, Cocalico topped Lancaster Catholic by the same score, improving to 38-4. In Tuesday’s clash, the Spartans were led by Trevor Courtney’s 670 total pin count, which included a score of 235 in his third game. Owen Colby came away with a 535 while T.J. Delp tallied 516, finishing with a 192 in his third game. Shane Kinser rolled a 540 to lead the Crimson Tide.

“The team never let the score deflate them,” he continued, referring to the 29-6 deficit midway through the match. “It didn’t change the way we approached the final seven matches.” GIRLS’ BASKETBALL Garden Spot came up short against Cocalico in a Section Three clash on the road Wednesday night. Despite Megan Fisher scoring a game-high 13, the Spartans lost to the Indians 43-19, falling to 1-5 in the league. Hannah Greenly (10 pts) and Hannah Custer, who scored nine, led the Indians in scoring as the team improved to 6-5 (3-3 league). The girls were coming off a much closer match from the Friday before, having lost to Solanco 62-52. The visitors came on strong in the fourth quarter with a 21-16 run to eclipse the Spartans, who had made an impressive comeback in the second quarter. Fisher had a team-high 17 points in that game while both Kari Stoltzfus and Erin Gonzalez finished with nine points. Paige Kemper added seven.

Livestock Judging Team Places Ninth In Nation Four students from Lancaster County achieved ninth place as a team in the 95th National 4-H Livestock Judging contest held from Nov. 8 to 14 in Louisville, Ky. The team placed ninth overall out of 33 teams with students ages 15 to 19 from across the country, as well as 10th in beef cattle and 11th in reasons. Members of the award-winning 2018 4-H Senior Livestock Judging Team included Emma Musser, Maddie Musser, Jacob Snavely, and Leah Welk. Individually, Leah earned 15th overall for her scores at the national competition. Leah, the daughter of Don and Emily Welk of Strasburg, is a senior at Lampeter-Strasburg High School. She has been involved in 4-H for eight years and is also a member of FFA. After graduation, Leah plans to attend Penn State University to major in agricultural science and minor in animal science or agricultural communications. Plus, she plans to get involved in livestock judging at the collegiate level. “I learned I can compete at a higher level just like anyone else can,” said Leah. “It was one of the best experiences I’ve ever had.” Earlier in the year, Leah set the goal of becoming an All-American, and achieving that was the highlight of her year. Prior to the national competition, the team won the state championship at the Penn State 4-H Achievement Days held at University Park from July 23 to 25. The team placed second at the Keystone International Livestock
Exposition on Oct. 5. Individually, Maddie earned fourth, Emma took eighth, and Leah came in 13th. At the Southeast Regional Contest in Raleigh, N.C., on Oct. 27, the team came in fourth place, with Maddie taking sixth and Leah placing ninth. Coached by Adam and Dani Zurin of Mount Joy and Johanna Rohrer of Manheim, the team began holding practices in January 2018 at the Farm and Home Center. Beginning in March, practices went from going over basic information in a classroom setting to visiting local farms for hands-on experience judging real animals. Each student was required to raise funds for the costs involved with traveling to and from competitions and did so by sending letters to family and friends as well as selling baskets at the Elizabethtown Fair and Manheim Farm Show. “We bonded really well as a team, and it was a lot of fun being together,” remarked Emma when reflecting on the group’s success. Emma, the daughter of Greg and Jodi Musser of Elizabethtown, has been a 4-H member for eight years. She is a junior at Elizabethtown Area High School, where she is president of FFA and plays tennis. “It was cool getting to see livestock from different states and getting to meet people from different states,” said Emma, “and representing Lancaster County and getting to do it all with my sister.” Emma’s sister Maddie has been a 4-H member for nine years and is currently a freshman at Penn State University, where she is studying agricultural business management. attributed the team’s outstanding year to the coaches, who volunteered countless hours instructing and practicing with the students. They also planned stops at nine farms along the way to the national competition in Louisville for the team to practice judging animals. Jacob Snavely, the son of Jason and Erica Snavely of Manheim, has been a 4-H member for six years. He is a sophomore at Manheim Central High School, where he is actively involved in FFA and started a student livestock judging club. Jacob decided
to try out for the Senior Livestock Judging Team after hearing about it at the annual Lancaster County 4-H reorganizational meeting, where volunteers share about the various opportunities for the coming year. The 2019 4-H Livestock Clubs reorganizational meeting is set to take place at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 22, at the Farm and Home Center, 1383 Arcadia Road, Lancaster. - 8 oz. Dark chocolate, chopped - 1 cup heavy whipping cream (or chocolate chips) Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Grease a bundt pan with coconut oil and dust with cocoa powder. In a large bowl, mix together flour, cocoa, soda, salt, and pudding mix. Set aside. Beat together coconut oil and sugars until light and creamed. Beat in eggs and vanilla for 2 minutes. Add dry ingredients and buttermilk to wet ingredients. Stir in chocolate chips. Pour batter evenly into greased pan and spread evenly. Bake in oven at 350 degrees for 30 min. Then lower temperature to 325 and continue to bake for an additional 30-40 minutes until toothpick inserted in middle comes out mostly clean. Cool for 5 minutes in pan before inverting onto wire rack to cool completely. Ganache: Chop up chocolate bar into chunks (or use chocolate chips) and set in a bowl. Pour heavy whipping cream into a saucepan and heat on medium-high until heated but not boiling. Pour cream on top of chocolate and let set for 10 minutes. Resist the urge to stir at this point! After 10 minutes, whisk together the chocolate and cream until smooth and shiny. Let set for a couple minutes before pouring on top of cooled cake. (Make sure your cake is on a cake plate.) Let ganache cool until slightly hardened. Store in airtight container.

Spotted Lanternfly Quarantine Information Posted placed under quarantine to help stop the spread of the spotted lanternfly. States with spotted lanternfly populations are also required to follow the permit requirements for Pennsylvania. This will help prevent the movement of the pest from other states into Pennsylvania. The spotted lanternfly permit training teaches business owners, managers, and designated employees how to comply with the quarantine - an important legal designation to help stop the spread of spotted lanternfly - to ensure each of their employees are complying with the law. The quarantine order directs businesses, residents, and county authorities to follow guidelines to prevent the movement of the certain articles that contain any living stages of the spotted lanternfly, including egg masses, nymphs, and adults such as logs, stumps, or any tree parts; nursery stock; crated materials; and trucks or vehicles not stored indoors. By investing time and personnel
to inspect vehicles to safeguard against transporting insects, people can help to ensure this pest does not reach farther beyond those counties that are already quarantined. As part of the spotted lanternfly quarantine agreement beginning on Wednesday, May 1, The Department’s Bureau of Plant Industry will begin to perform inspections and verification checks to confirm that businesses are properly permitted. Failure to take the permit exam and educate employees could result in possible penalties and fines. The permit training and testing can be accessed through Penn State Extension by visiting https://extension.psu.edu/spotted -lanternfly-permit-training. The Frozen Foot 5K and 10K Race Series is back for its 30th year. The three-race series will kick off on Sunday, Jan. 20, at Elizabethtown College, 1 Alpha Drive, Elizabethtown. Participants who complete all three races will now have the opportunity to collect a unique set of finishers’ medals. “This is the first year that we’ve added finishers’ medals,” explained race director Chuck Wells. “If you finish all three races, you’ll be able to build yourself a snowman (out of the medals).” The races are set to begin at 2 p.m. on Sundays, Jan. 20, Feb. 17, and March 17, on the campus of Elizabethtown College. Each of the three races will follow the same rolling route through a neighboring development and around the college campus. Wells noted that the Idiots Option 10K, which was added for the first time in 2017, was a success and will be available again for those looking to complete a longer distance by covering the 5K course twice. The name sparked from a conversation Wells had in the past with two participants: One suggested the addition of a 10K, while the other remarked, “What kind of idiot would do that?” Interested individuals may register for the 5K or 10K series at www.appliedracemgmt.com/ events. Those who register for the series by the first race will receive a custom long-sleeve tech shirt. On-site registration will also be available prior to each race. Race packet pickup will take place on race days between noon and 1:45 p.m. in the Bucher Meetinghouse at Elizabethtown College. Signage will be posted directing participants to the area. Following each race, hot homemade soup will be served. Awards
The 30th annual Frozen Foot 5K and 10K Race Series will offer three Sunday afternoon races at Elizabethtown College on Jan. 20, Feb. 17, and March 17. New for 2019 is the addition of finishers’ medals for those who complete all three races. will be presented at approximately 3:15 p.m. Participants will also be entered to win door prize giveaways. Individual event awards will be bestowed upon the overall male and female winners, the masters male and female winners, and the first-, second- and third-place male and female winners for each five-year age group. Series awards, which will be presented at a ceremony at Funk Brewing, 28 S. Market St., Elizabethtown, on March 17, will include prize money for the overall male and female winners and the masters male and female winners. Additional prizes will be distributed to the top three male and female finishers in each age group. Special discounts will be available at Funk Brewing to Frozen Foot participants following each race. Through the decades, Wells said that the number of runners has fluctuated - perhaps due to the influx of 5K events in recent
years. The inaugural Frozen Foot series had 16 runners and later grew to more than 800 participants one year; however, in recent years Wells said the event has averaged about 375 participants. “I don’t know that any of us that worked on (Frozen Foot) in the beginning thought that it would be around this long,” said Wells. “It’s great. I’m happy that the race has been around that long.” A portion of the race proceeds benefits the Christ Church United Church of Christ mission fund to help people domestically and abroad. Wells said that the destination for this summer’s service project has not yet been finalized but will likely be somewhere within the United States. For more information on the Frozen Foot 5K Race Series, interested individuals may visit the aforementioned website or call Wells at 717-580-6983.

The Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture is encouraging businesses to obtain the required spotted lanternfly permit to ensure they are complying with the spotted lanternfly quarantine orders. As the next phase of the spotted lanternfly life cycle gears up, now is an ideal time for businesses to learn how they can jumpstart this spring’s fight. There is no cost to businesses to obtain a permit. Under the law, businesses in Pennsylvania need to take the online permit training and exam and receive a permit for their vehicles. The Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture continues its work to contain and minimize the spread of the spotted lanternfly while also keeping commerce flowing in Pennsylvania. In November 2017, 13 Pennsylvania counties - Berks, Bucks, Carbon, Chester, Delaware, Lancaster, Lebanon, Lehigh, Monroe, Montgomery, Northampton, Philadelphia, and Schuylkill - were
